AUTISM, ADHD, ADD, etc - SUPPORT GROUP!

Hi Luv
thank you for sharing.
For my son, I had all of his vaccination on the schedules given by his PD...
however i decided to give at least 6 weeks in betwen jabs for my girl. and also try to avoid 3 in 1 or 6 in 1 kind of jab.. but not sure which clinic will provide such individual jab ...and also like you, will try to delay mmr jab for girl until 2 or so.

I just checked out jabs for my younger son.Opinions on the MMR jab really seem varied. we have delayed getting our second son the jab, just to be safe, but I realise that he falls ill quite easily now because his resistence isn't that strong compared to other kids who take stronger meds and also have had their jabs. Just discussed with our PD today, and we will give the jabs as individual doses - 6 jabs in total, and for each disease, the 2 jabs will be two months apart. Its much more expensive for sure - around $105 per jab, compared to $80+ for the MMR. But if I can avoid a risk at this point, I will. I think most clinics offer this option, if you request it and insist you want this instead of the MMR. Its just a longer process, and we have to pay upfront as they have to order the vaccines in advance.

Hi Mothers
Just to share my path with you all.
Since July 2012, my son managed to get a place for EIPIC at Tiong Bahru (SPD) - twice a week for 2 1/2 hours. I am still trying to get double EIPIC so that my son will have intervention program from Monday to Thursday. He is 3 years 4months now with no speech though eye contacts still considered good. I started him with childcare at Cherie Hearts from 9 to 12 or 1pm last month. It is a right move, at least he is not at home with my in laws watching TV whole morning.
I had found a private speech therapy "chatterbox" at Singapore Shopping Centre, assessment was conducted, hope that the therapist, Tee Suat Chin will be able to speed up his speech development.
But she did mention that my son need a lot of sensory thearapy in order to improve his speech.
Now I am on waiting list for Saturday OT slot with Mr Johnson at www.therapyconnects.com.sg
Getting more impatient to wait.... and wanted to get the right Therapist who can really help to handle his sensory problems.
As for the EIPIC at SPD, I am also trying to find for alternative since they are now shortage of manpower.

I am staying at Redhill; any recommendedation for OT Home Therapist or Private Daily Intervention Programs?
Logistic can be a struggle for my husband at times.

Hi Louise, we 'spoke' on this thread before.

My son too has left SPd due to their manpower issue. He is now taking private Eipic at Leap frog in Bukit Timah while waiting for a vacancy at Eden's. But my hub is so pleased with Leapfrog that he is considering to forgo our chance at Eden's.

You may want to check out Leapfrog

Hi Good Try, no more OT given at SGH cos' SPD is having 30 mins of OT and ST weekly.

Hi Scrumpee
Yes, we had email correspondences last year.
When did your son leave SPD? They is still working on double EIPIC. I am concern with the experience of the therapists and teachers there.
How many days your son is having EIPIC with Leap Frog every week?

My son left SPD in Dec.
Same here, all the better teachers have left SPD, except for Teacher Yvonne. Other than Teacher Yvonne, I don't have confidence in the rest. The manager who was in charge of EIPIC, Annie also left. And Teacher Yvonne has to double up as the planner for EIPIC programmes.

Leap Frog's EIPIC is twice a week, 2hrs each session. Currently there are 6 kids in the session with 2 teachers, all kids are verbal. And I like the Individual learning plan that they have crafted for my boy, very precise and hit on the nail. The fees is $980 per mth but can deduct $300 as I applied for grant from CEL.

We stopped leapfrog cos our st left and Michelle the boss took over and she is so busy and st hv to be cancelled cos of her travelling.leapfrog epic by mandy?

My boy ST is Hui Ting and she is quite good and responsible, OT just changed (not sure if he is good). They just employ another ST recently, not sure of her experience.
Leapfrog Bukit Timah is tough in terms of Logistics.
Any home OT to recommend?

hi all,

it's good to see there's a thread for mummy with autistic kid. I also have a 8 year old autistic kid and hope to share resources with mummies out there...

Thanks Caramel for sharing info . That's very good information to know. I will check with my girl's PD as well

Hi Af7680, no problem

Did any of you catch the article in yesterday's Sunday Times, about the founder of Ad Planet, who has OCD, Asperger's and ADHD? It was an incredibly encouraging read! You should definitely read it.

hi everyone, I would like to share that there is a CDA approved OT, ST centre run by thye Hwa Guan near Queenstown MRT. its subsidise costs at $80 per session. if you take a course of 10 sessions, it its $70 Per session. after busting my budget on ABA, I decided to try this. The place is called Children therapy centre n address is 150A Mei Chin Road, a few blocks from MRT. Maybe helpful for Louise.

Thanks Angeline, fees and location are good for me
Will call and check about their OT session.

I had engaged ST with Chatterbox at Singapore Shopping Centre. Will continue with her for few months and evaluate the progress of my son.

HI Caramel
today hubby brought my girl 5mth old to a clinc to have "individual jab" instead of multi in 1... before he goes down there, i called clinc and confirm with dr on the phone that every vaccination can be done individually. however just now hubby called me to say 2 in 1 was injected to my girl. i quickly called dr and asked him why it wasnt separated. he said its not available in Singapore. i think today`s vaccination was DTap. and he mentioned it has to be at least 2 at the same time.
so, wonder yours were 1 jab at a time even for DTap?

Hi ladies,

It's really inspiring to read the entries shared by all of you. At least I am not all alone..

My elder boy has always been active, short temper and difficult to focus on activities for long. I have been thinking if there's anything wrong with him. Thinkings of autism, ADHD did pop up in my mind. But his cc teachers dismiss them and said it could be him bring nsughty. Actually he is ok but when he turn 3 yrs old, we put him in cc with the arrival of my younger boy. He started to get restless, extremely hard to control , throwing tantrums and very active. It could also be due to jealousy as he always think tt my confinement lady forgot to bring the baby away. Well this continues till he is 5 yrs old when we decided he should attend a half day kindergarten with smaller kids to teacher ratio to improve his attention span. He can scream and shout over small issues and would hit his younger brother if he touch his stuff. He would spout rubbish even we repeatedly told him its wrong to do so. But he can talk pretty well, write and dance. colouring is bad. he can socialize but skills are quite bad. This period is extremely bad cos he has consumed lotsa cold sweet drinks. This has caused a lot of problem for us and embarrassment. My mother in law always said we spoil him and should cane him. Within ourselves, no amount of discipline can tone him down. We scold, scream and even cane him also in vain.

The principal and teacher of the kindergarten called me for a meeting. They told me he is not focus on his work and have problem linking items.. Counting objects 1 to 10 is ok but anything more he would rush through. In small group discussion, he is always wandering off in his mind. But they agree he has very good memory. They suspect he is using his memory to get by but not really understanding the concepts. He has special liking for MRT. Can memorize the whole MRT map with the Train station label eg NE16 in a short time. They suggest we send him for occupation therapy to improve his attention span. I did ask if he is autistic or ADHD but they can't comment as they are not specialists. However they feel that we should get him occupational therapy regardless of the situation. Early intervention is important.

Hence, we like to get him to go for occupational therapy first before the diagnosis. Any good recommendation for the therapist centre and what are the fees like.

Thank you in advance .

Hi ricorn

Based on what you have described of your elder son, my sense is that he may have Aspergers Syndrome. Sorry if this is not a good news to you. Aspergers is a form of autism but the kid is usually of high functioning and has average or above average IQ. And for a kid with Aspergers, he/she does not have speech delay, in fact they can speak quite well but have difficulty in socializing and understanding social norms.

I suspected Aspergers because when I was researching for my son's condition and having met doctors and psychologists, I can now differentiate the different types of autism.

Apart from occupational therapy, you may want to consider sending him to a psychologist for an initial assessment. You can either send him to a private psychologist or go to KKH's child development unit via the polyclinic route. But do note that for kkh, the waiting time is long.

May I know how old is your son? if he is 5 or 6, you may want to put him through a school assessment test as well and see if he is ready for mainstream primary.

For OT, you can check out Kidz OT. All their OTs are good and is about $140 an hour, once a week.

Don't worry too much yet. Aspergers is a form of high-functioning autism and kids with this syndrome usually have a good chance to integrate into the mainstream.

Angeline, I had confirmed a time slot for OT next week wtith Children therapy centre.
Their rates is half of the private therapy center. $70-$80 per session). I will view the center this Sat.

Ricon, if you have such concerns, it is better to act immediately even though your son may outgrown this stage. Going through KK will take very long time. I would think that Wee Care- Social Skills PlayGroup may be able to help your son to be more calm when he is with his peers.

Hi AF7680,

I'm not familiar with DTap - we did 2 in 1 for that jab, but I am not sure if its available as separate jabs. It's worrying that doc told you one thing on the phone and did another thing
sad.gif

Hi Caramel,
actually that is one of my worries too.
i have a feeling that i need to search another dr who understand better and agree to what he said.sigh....

Hi Louise, Scrumpee,

Thanks for the advise. Sometimes its quite confusing as whether he has problems. Sometimes he can be quite sensible. In any case, Iwill call to check the details.

Thks.

Af7680,

PMed you my PD contact. I know how frustrating it can be looking for one that understands our kids. I went through 3 different ones before I found this Dr. Just for your reference in case you need it

Hi Louise, I thought the Children Therapy Centre is closed on Sat?

I brought my son for OT today at the Children Therapy Centre and the therapist is quite good as she shared with me some techniques like deep pressure massage on hands and legs to calm my son. He was really focused when she massaged her so I'll definitely try it at home. I'll observe some more and share with you all.

I would like to share that some special needs children usually have more than one condition. For example, my son is high functioning autism and is verbal. But the therapists told me he also has Sensory Processing Disorders as well OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder something like that). For my case, I feel that it is more important in finding out where his strength and weakness are and find the necessary therapy or techniques to treat. I like to joke with my hubby that we need a whole village and a team of therapists and doctors to raise a special needs kid.

I saw some parents of special needs children shouting and screaming at their children at EIPIC or therapy and I felt very sad. I totally understand that it is a frustrating time for parents of special needs child as I am in that situation. But please avoid to shout or cane him or her as they don't know what they are doing. To help them, you or the therapist can teach them techniques to deal with it.

Hi,
Just called up kits4 kids, they said they have free assessment. Hearing my description, they said the condition could be 'compliance'.. Anyway they will assess next sat. The good thing is they have a branch at amk which is near my house.

I have called up kk but they propose me to go polyclinic for assessment to hv cheaper fees. Thinking to bring my boy go polyclinic also.

I am kinda kiasu .. I know kk takes a long time but cheaper. Or shld I stick to one? Any suggestion?

if your son is just having compliance issue, then I suppose you don't need to go KKH. Unless there are other underlying condition. In any case, every kid will have a compliance issue somehow so to me, that's not even a condition but is just a growing up phase.

Perhaps you can go to K4K first and see what they say before you decide whether to queue for KKh. You will get subsidise rate if you to to KKH via recommendation from polyclinic. Polyclinic itself will not do the assessment.

Angeline
yes, my son also has auditory processing issue. He needs sometime to process my question before responding.

hi ricorn,

if a diagnosis is important to you and you are looking for a diagnosis before treatment, then perhaps go to kkh for an assessment. however if you are ok to move forward first before your son is diagnosed then i will suggest starting therapy first. more often than not, therapy providers will be able to assess your child and address his needs. however this is not a formal diagnosis unless it is done by a psychologist.

your son might have some compliance issues but compliance is not a condition. compliance issues are common and can be addressed quickly with good therapy.

all the best!

Hi! my son is in k4k toa payoh br... before that he is actually studying in pcf but he just simply dun like it... but now everyday my son will wake up by himself waiting for us to bring him to school.. i nvr see my son gg school happy b4... the teachers are good and they will actually provide u weekly email to let u know what they teach my son and how my son progressing, and one of his teacher would actually use her hp and send me short video of him in the class....

Hi Caramel
Received it well . Thank you so much for your kind advice .
Definitely I will call them and discuss further .
Have a great weekend ! *^^*

Hi all,

Thanks for all the advise. Guess I will send him to K4K to see what they say. Hopefully its just compliance issues. Currently he is 5 yrs old at K1. Previously he is at full day childcare and he hates it. Now we transfer him to a half day montessori kindergarten. Situation is better as teachers are better able to handle him. Will see how the situation goes.

Angeline, i visited the Children Therapy Centre on Sat. The centre is opened but no available slot for ST. May I know the name of your child's OT?

Hi Louise, my son OT is Trina, short for Katerina. She seemed quite experienced and my son who is very active listens to her :) I find the location quite convenient too.

Hi Ricon, my son also loved to go to K4K. The Principal helped to assess my son and immediately identify his issues. He benefited from TEACCH structured programme, OT and ST which is part of school programme. The teachers and principal was very responsive then. I would say my son improved a lot during his one year stay with them. The quality of OT and ST is good and I get detailed weekly from them. If finance is not a worry, I would recommend this school. One thing to consider though: My mom finds it very concerning is that the rest of the children are non-verbal while my son is verbal. She nagged me day and night to send him to a "normal" childcare. And so I did but we found he has difficulty going to a "normal" childcare. and now he settled for home based therapy and EIPIC only. This is my experience for your reference.

As for KKH, I have gone through the polyclinic and go to KKH CDU. My experience is that they are very short-handed and I have to wait quite long for their appointmenet. After polyclinic, we waited for 3 months before first appointment. Half a year for second assessment. And now that they know he is verbal and getting better, they have scheduled the third appointment one year later. They tried their best but they really short of resources or there are really a lot of kids waiting for assessment. In my son's case, I really find not much help for the assessment as we already started him at k4k for school, OT and ST. If you do not have any ideas of how to start helping your son, the doctor will be able to provide all the essential services from government. However, if you want the service faster, you would need to turn private sector only. Most importantly, the doctor's assessment will help you to apply for subsidies from early intervention centres including k4k. Just liaise with CEL. If you stay in central or west, the queue is shorter at NUH (I heard 6 months ago) who would then refer you to go Jurong Medical for therapy.

Like Ricon's child, my son also has "compliance" issues according to his Teacher at EIPIC centre. This is a general term to describe his behaviour. If I sit down and analyse his issues, there are quite a few: Joint attention issues, auditory processing, hyperactive (not sure if ADHD) and OCD. According to his OT, it is a modulation problem. He writes very lightly while colouring with a lot of strength. His voice is sometimes soft and sometimes very loud. He likes to sit on edge of chair (enjoys sensory) but completes flop when it comes to wearing his clothes (avoid sensory). He sometimes loves to cuddle and sometimes pushes you away. According to Trina, his brain has yet to learn to modulate ie listens to himself and corrects his volume, control his strength when touching people. Hence he needs a lot of OT so that his brain begins to learn how to modulate. It's also good to bring him to the physical activities but must have a goal for him so that he doesn't run all over the place.

Before he learn how to modulate, he would be termed naughty, hyperactive etc. In actual fact, he is unable to control himself as his brain is wired differently from others. If left alone, the modulation problem may resolve later but if I want a shot at mainstream school for him, I just have to spend more on OT and practise more at home. The bad news is that the Government is not setting aside any Budget for these special needs kids this year. But I guess, compared to other children in his school, his condition is mild.

Angeline,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on going the government route for the diagnosis part. I have been wanting to say something, but couldn't say it as nicely as you have
happy.gif
We managed to do our diagnosis privately and recently when we went to KKH for diagnosis (long story, we thought we had to do it for school deferment - turns out, no.), it was a completely draining experience, and nowhere close to as accurate as the private screening. So between seeing a good therapist and going to KKH, I would say see the therapist and get started on therapy as well.

I am struggling with compliance issues in my son too. I realise that we will probably always deal with compliance issues - I just want to teach him to self-regulate at this point. It's going to take lots of time, patience and love
happy.gif
Stay strong ladies.

Hi Caramel, half of me is screaming "Why is there no Budget for our poor kids!" while the other half is saying "I should be grateful for the help and support my son have so far. THere are worse cases I have seen". In case, someone thinks I am radical, this is the most mild statement I could think of.

The only way I can think of helping this issue is to further study this area and come up with more ideas for the government consideration. Or become a special needs teacher or OT :) Other than that is to raise my son up with the least problem as possible sigh.

Hi! Angeline (angel_09) for your information from feb onward k4k is no longer available for cel subsidy for new application. And my son also enjoy gg to k4k.

Angeline your son is attending full day at k4k or just half day? and is he attending other mainstream too?

Oh dear, one less option for us parents.

My son went for half day for one year May 2011-May 2012.

I have problems getting a mainstream childcare for him. Any good recommendations in the jurong/bt batok/cck area?

Hi Angeline, my coming 4yo son who is undergoing EIPIC therapy twice weekly also attends full day CC Sonshine Childcare Centre at Bukit Batok St 21, 5min walk away from Bukit Batok MRT. Been there since this month and his teachers are quite accommodating when we told them about his therapy schedules. Maybe your son would like it as well.

Hi Luv, thanks for the Sonshine contact. The place is just 5 mins from my place Yeah! Any principal or teacher I should speak to?

Hi Angeline, i didnt talk to any of the principals nor teachers when i transferred my son to his new cc at blk 211. My hb n my decision r based in friends' recommendation, the lower fees r an icing on the cake. It was a rather hasty decision cos vacancies is running out fast. There were only 2 more left when he was enrolled. The cc is non aircon n their focus is on bilingual n Christian values. There is also the pcf sparkletots just opp but i m not sure abt the curriculum there.

Angeline, I know what you mean. We are very fortunate to be able to fork out for expensive fees, but even then, we have already gone dead broke in a year. I felt incredibly frustrated at KKH as I looked at the mums and dads, we all want the best for our kids, and our kids NEED the extra help/classes/therapy/funding more than neurotypical kids, but the money just isn't coming in. I believe someday it will. Autism is fast becoming a mainstream problem, and soon our leaders will need to take notice because these children will be in our mainstream schools and workplaces. They are still taking ages to properly revamp the main education system, so it will probably takes ages for them to reach our kids who are on the fringe.
I take comfort in the fact that God has always given us just enough for our expenses - we never have excess, but we never have to give our kids less either. So I am thankful for that. I also firmly believe that we as parents are the best carers for our children. We have been entrusted with these precious lives, and we understand them better than any therapist will - I always remind myself to breathe, watch my son and see what is triggering his behaviour. Often I can understand his actions if I try. He has been testing my patience more than ever lately, and today as we came home after 3 hours of ABA and 1 hour of floortime, I thought to myself, frankly at 4, if I had to work so hard, I would throw a fit too;)

Mothers with Autism kids,
This will be our greatest trial and we are going to manage it well with God's grace and believe that our children will be out of the spectrum soon. If we look at less fortunate children, at least our children have us.

Angeline, I have got Cathleya for son's OT and I am queuing for ST on Saturday -Faith.
