AUTISM, ADHD, ADD, etc - SUPPORT GROUP!

Hi imrouge, i'm 1 of those parents who alternate between eipic and mainstream cc. But i have to admit his schedule is punishing hence i try to enforce early bedtime. works well so far. on eipic days, he goes cc in the morning, then to eipic in the afternoon, go back to cc until my hb fetched him home. on non eipic days, he goes to cc whole day.

Hi luvagape, he doesn't feel overwhelmed having to go dIfferent places ah? I've decided to let him try 3 hr morning Mon to Fri. At least after that he can eat lunch n sleep. When he's better then maybe reduce the frequency to epic n go mainstream cc.

hi imrouge,

it really depends on your child's ability to cope in a group setting. if he finds group settings challenging, usually its better to do intensive early intervention to work on group skills before tapering off therapy and enrolling part time in a mainstream school. this way you're systematically preparing him to survive in a mainstream school.

hi mummies
i've decided to join this thread as my son (5yo) cc teacher and myself both feel that he has adhd and/or spd.
i brought up the issue the same day as the teacher who requested to talk to me
right now they will bring in their specialist in to observe the kids who are "spotted" with such issues. will observe for 2-3 days.
then meeting with parents & teacher.

i guess the next step is to go KKH CDU for full diagnosis. but i know it's going to be a very long wait - i dont mind going through the private route.

if indeed long wait, where can i go for a private assessment? i stay in jurong.

i am glad my son's cc has such services. btw, its pcf, not some branded school.

just brief description about my boy. he cannot sit well in circle time, unable to focus, i also suspect auditory issues, he gives answers before qns finished asking, give sudden shouts in class, talks about another topic when the class is talking about the subject taught. auditory is coz he speaks very loud, cannot regulate the volume well, complain about mrt trains too noisy, he cannot bear the decibels in crowded places eg malls....nowadays better, can cope better coz we gave ample pit stops rest, let him adjust to the loud noise. he will say cannot hear us talk, but he easily picks up sounds we cannot hear (low frequency sounds)

he start speaking in sentences at 3yo, before that all single words eg bear, ball, apple, dont want
he is very bright, good memory, absorbs well if he really focus in class, writes ok, motor skill ok, no physical issues, no issues with playgyms, social interaction, very friendly with kids, got ample eye contact, no tantrums, no verbal shouting etc. he have good thinking skills eg what he can/cannot do coz we started him 2yrs ago with the thinking corner. eat/sleep well. he is very sweet boy and love to please. very normal child, until...class starts, then he cannot focus at all
every enrichment class we went to: art, berries, swimming even, all tchrs tell me same thing, my son cannot focus. i gave him art coz it helps with his patience and focusing somehow...it did help but i guess i need more than art classes

thanks for hearing

Hi Pixiepixel, I think my son shares some of the characteristics that your son displayed. He cannot sit till for 5 secs, sensitive to sounds and speak suddenly loudly. His therapist says that he has some have sensory processing issues, more of modulating sounds, movements and actions. I think your son is on the mild side and I would sussect that sessions of Occupational Therapy would help him.

hello angeline

is eden in clementi? can you provide me a URL or pm me the address? i dont mind bringing my son for assessment first...as i know its going to be a long wait for KKH/NUH

Hi All,

KKH CDU has a long wait from my experience as well.

I have tried EPIC and a few other cc's but somehow i felt my son wasnt getting the attention he needed, this ended up transfering to the home. He would be very frurasted and his flare ups were more consistent.

I believe that multiple early intervention is the best so we can prep them for mainstream schools.

My son went thru 3 diff places simultaneously, i opted for one therapy centre and home based as i felt 3 was too taxing but the skills imparted have prepared him well. Well enough for me to know that i can worry a little less only

We are currently in the process of trying different schools/combinations - its quite difficult to find the right balance, feels like we are groping in the dark!

We are in the process of looking for a primary school with good SN support - not just in terms of having a counselor and SNO, but also a nurturing school culture. Does anyone have any recommendations on schools to check out?

Also, have any of you deferred your children from primary school? I am trying to figure out the process - do we request deferment prior to registering for P1, or after registration?

Thanks in advance for your help! If you want to contact me privately, I can be reached at [email protected]

Hi Caramel
For primary school, if the good schools are not withing your vicinity, would you still try? cos if is more than 2km from your home, it is very unlikely for your son to be enrolled due to all the balloting. Have you check out the schools that are near your place?

Hi All,

If you keen to be in a forum discssion do look at

https://www.facebook.com/dmtherapysg

They are the home based therapist i cam used for my kids and it would nice for us parents to have a platform to discuss issues we are facing.

Hi Srumpee,

I am open to schools that are further away. There are only 4 primary schools within our radius anyway, and our priority is getting him into a school that will encourage him to excel, not just tolerate him. If you have any recommendations, would be great!

momto3,
he is a 2010 baby, so should start P1 in 2015. We will need to register him in 2014. I'm trying to figure out if we are supposed to defer him when we register or 6 months before he is due to start P1. Ideally, we want to do it when we register, so we don't get stuck waiting for approval at the last minute. Any idea how it works?

Caramel
If your boy is a 2010 baby, why does he need to start P1 in 2015? I thought should be 2017? cos he is only 3 years old this year right? Cos my boy is 2009 baby, 4 this year so he starts P1 in 2016.

I heard St Andrews is good. But like I said, if you stay more than 2KM from the sch, your chance of enrollment is low due to balloting. Unless you want to do PV. But for some popular schools, if you stay more than 2KM away, they will not accept you as PV.

Caramel, Pv is parent volunteering in choice school for x number of hours to secure a better chance for enrolment. If you or your hb are exstudents in your preferred pri sch, the chance r v high for enrolment. Or, join grassroots or clan associations.

imrouge, yes he was tired at 1st but because i join in once weekly, he really looks forward to the therapy sessions mayb cos he gets to spend 1 on 1 time with me, :p nowadays he's on his own n he's used to the schedule.

Mariel,

i have engaged a home based therapist for my son and daughter

Son is high functioning autism and daughter has SM

I gave up on EPIC after seeing my soon constantly frustrated

He comes to my house and does AAT (animal assisted) and works on speech , social skills etc.

i felt it complemented better with what i was teaching him at home

Imagine having a son tt will not leave the house and now he willingly wants to go out

Hi Anna, if you feel your home based therapist AAT can really help, suggest they place their info over at the providers corner or start a new thread to educate the parents. This thread is mainly for mothers to share experience and information on all aspects, particularly EIPIC and therapies. While I understand that you are keen to share, AAT needs to give us parents more concrete informaton of how it can help.

Hi mommies

There's a talk this Saturday 2 - 4.30 pm at Lighthouse Woodlands Church on Sensory Integration. The speakers are experienced therapists. If you need more details, please pm me

Hi Angeline,

While i do agree with you, i must say that i feel sharing creates a great sense of community for us parents. I do not want to force a therapist to place their information on a platform to be indexed as "just another provider" but i will consider starting a new thread, I think the reasons why most us parents struggle is that we follow the norm and tend to utilise the current services out there only, we do not explore options. You ask about more concrete information on how AAT can help, as my kids are undergoing this , a simple google will orovide you with a goldmine of information and studies.

I appreciate your comments but i think it for each parent to decide if want to read further on any therapy. Being fed information is quite useless, the success of research trials is what is truly the winner.

I hope you see my perspective.

Lastly, i do feel AAT can help. My children's happiness and progress are my testament to my investments.

This thread is to share experiences therapies which i am doing but i think the responsibility comes from our own research.

I would delete your comment as it contradicts what this thread is about.

Hi Anna

Thanks for your comments. We can agree to disagree of course but my main concern here is the frequency that you mention DMTherapy and their facebook website in your post. While you might have done this inadvertently, I would think that most mommies would pm you directly for more information if they are interested.

Most mommies would appreciate actual experience and comments on the therapist. I can google the whole web universe but I need to know other people's experience and see if it is suitable for my child. I would appreciate if you can share more on the following:

methodology - What type of dog used? Will it scare our kids? Speech what method

Duration - how long is the session?

Equipment - what equipment is needed? Do we need an open space

background of the therapist

cost of the sessions

benefits etc it would

If it's good, I'm open to my son doing it.

Happy Easter to those mummies who observe it

Hope you had a lovely long weekend with your families - ours was surprisingly relaxing.

Came across this, and wanted to share it with you. This song has always ministered to me, and hearing the story behind it just spoke to me truly, especially in my moments of struggle:

Thanks caramel for sharing this.. It's encouraging to hear her faith testimony and inspite of her pain to praise Him!

Hi Everyone,

After much prompting from fellow forum-ers , i decided to share in-depth about my home based therapist and the AAT .

AAT is animal assisted therapy.

The dog used is a specially trained in aiding in the therapy, from what i have noted, the dog is part of the sessions, my kids walk, brush , learn motor skills (such as cutting treats - then transformed to cutting paper (shapes) , speech etc).

The dog is not scary one bit, she is a smaller dog and is great, very tolerant i must say, my son pulls her ears and she has no reaction .

I have opted for 2 hour sessions cause my kids take some time to warm up and i didn't want 1 hour to become 30 mins but 3 months into it, they come twice a week and i have seen progress.

My son had a lack of motor coordination and now he can perform tasks and activities without less guidance , he even plays with his sister which has NEVER happened.

There is no equipment needed, I use the living room and they all sit on the floor and use the floor space for activities. They provide it all

The therapist is a trained psychologist from the USA and is a senior play therapist as well, the handler (assistant) is a professional dog handler and trainer.

The sessions range from $120 - $180 per session / hour.

Benefits : Home based, i don't need to prepare my kids, they come and the kids have fun. I cannot say all kids will have the same positive experience but my kids have benefited. As we all know, not all therapies work for all kids.

Well i hope my info suffices

Have a good day ahead

juat had another frustrating review at KKH CDU, basically was told that "this is what we have, you are on your own"

currently we are offered only 1 cycle of 3 sessions of SLT after waiting for 8mths.

OT assessment was 8mths after initial visit to CDU upon our insistance as the PD refuse to send us for OT assessment. (repeatedly called to ask for OT assessment, until they relented)

scheduled OT sessions was 3 months after assessment (still reasonable by KKH standards)

What frustrates me is that my boy has greater delay in SL than OT, yet we are unable to get more SL sessions, the SLT cld nt commit to more sessions, the KKH CDU PD says it depends on the SLT altough she noted that my boy needs more SLT intervention than OT. This PD also claim that weekly intervention is not required (even though i mentioned to her that when we tried weekly SLT via pte, we can see the improvement), she then went on about that she wldn't encourage parallel kkh slt sessions and pte slt sessions as it wld confuse the child (which i somewhat agree)

then i asked her how am i supposed to organise pte slt when KKH do not commit on the no of sessions of SLT they provide? her reply was that what KKH provided is sufficient.

the conversation just went round in circles and i am furious and exhausted esp after waiting more than 2 hours for the apppointment.

for mummies who went through the subsidied KKH route, please share your experience, pls tell me that i am not alone dealing with this inept 1st class medical system.

much appreciated

Hi Gracelynn

For my case, it's either they made us wait indefinitely or just called up to give a very short notice like "we have slots for your child on Tuesday at a fixed timing." This was not helpful in our situation as I'm a full time working mum plus my kid still have to attend his lessons.

Then after making it to the 1st session of CDU SLT, the therapist mentioned that she's just taking over her colleague who happened to be on mc that day and she would just do the assessment on my child. Her colleague would contact us again after her return. It's was really frustrating in our schedule planning plus it seemed that we had been "returned" to the assessment stage each time a different therapist sees us.

In the end, we rejected all the therapies under CDU and remain with the Rehab centre instead (my boy started his therapies with the rehab centre in the 1st place).

Also, because we were told CDU therapists would cease seeing my boy if he attends EPIC (which my son did eventually) whereas Rehab would continue as long as my child needs it though we only get a slot between 4-6 weeks each time. Though the sessions are far apart, we get to sit in the sessions and the therapist would give us tips and guidance to carry out the practices at home for continuity.

Hi Gracelynn, I didn't really trust what the therapists at KKH CDU could do. Different ones kept seeing my boy and all he got was assessments after assessments. Only at his very last session did my husband got some inkling on how to help. I'm maybe fortunate enough for waiting 6 months from 1st visit at the polyclinic till he started EIPIC.

In the meantime, do continue to sign up for all those caregiver training programmes or self learn to equip you on how to help your boy. KKH is right in a way. I find their approach ingenious and they do cover a broad spectrum of therapy. That said, I have no experience with pte therapy cos like you, I'm scared of mine being worse off then before if I continue to overload him.

Hi Gracelynn,

I was told there is a long wait list for ST so they asked me to go for caregiver training so that we can start doing something ourselves while waiting.

My son started on EPIC 3hrs mon to fri. He seems to like it better than one to one therapy. Maybe one to one too intensive n stressful for him. Coming July, he will enroll to THK AMK under govt subsidized centre. End of the year then consider adding in the mainstream cc where his elder bro is currently at. The mainstream cc is actually sparkletots n they have the SEN(http://www.pcf.org.sg/viewarticle.aspx?wfc=HOMESEN) team to help. Dun know how good are they. The principal told me they will engage a therapist to do therapy once a wk.

Hi Gracelynn

In my experience with KKH CDU, I would say that they are trying to provide the very basic services in a package for your child. But as you know every special needs child is different, so they would need different combination of therapies depending on their strength and weaknesses.

I do not benefit at all from these consultations and the only benefit is the doctor's diagnosis can get us some subsidised help at CEL's EIPIC.

Instead, I went on to do my own research and put my son in kids4kits and sign him up with a very good speech therapist based on my colleague's recommendation. In turn the speech therapist noticed my son's sensory issues and recommended me to seek Occupational Therapist. Then I remembered seeing a subsidsied OT from the KKH list and went on to sign him up for Children Therapy Centre ran by Thye Hwa Guan. My overall experience is that you would need to do your own research and organise your finances to get the therapies. Start with the one your child need most and seek referrals from then on. I think the mommies on this forum have lots of referrals to share too.

Hang in there.

PS KKH just called and said my son's doctor has joined another project and now the Head of Dept will attend to him. Hopefully its better than the first one.

Gracelynn
If u want more regular sessions with a fix SLT, ask the CDU to transfer you to KKH Rehab. I know of one mummy who's son get to see a SLT every two weeks if not every week.

Alternatively is to go for Pte SLT all the way since KKH's arrangement gives u so much frustration. For Pte SLT, they will even help to pair your child with another child for sessions when they think your child is ready. This is a very good arrangement as it helps set the stage for socialisation. No point having the child to be able to communicate with the SLT but not his peers which is what we want to achieve ultimately.

Even for OT, my son's pte OT paired him up with another boy and both learn how to play with each other and take turns.

Hi mommies

I have some problems placing my son in N2 child care and would like to seek your views on how I handle the following areas:

1) Would you reveal that your son has ASD though he is on high functioning side and with early intervention? Some mommies and teachers have told me not to reveal and let them discover later. However, my son was super active yesterday when we visited the child care yesterday as he wanted to play with the kids. The principals and the teachers started to ask if he has a condition and I had to let them know. Some immediately told me their classes are packed to the rim whilst others gave some helpful referrals of which childcare to try.

My son has to attend 2 afternoons of EIPIC and I dont know how I can get round this missing of school for 2 afternoons without telling them his condition.

(2) Is it true that places like Mindchamps or Mulberry Learning would be more accommodative towards children like him due to lower teacher-student ratio?

(3) I stay in bukit batok and dont mind going to jurong east or clementi or Choa chu kang for my son. Can the mommies share which child care centre has enrolled their child or someone's child previously despite knowing the condition?

Angeline
In my son's previous two childcare centres and the current kindy, I declared his condition as I want to be assured that the teachers and principal are dedicated and are sincere in accepting him. Another reason is of course he will be absent 2 out of 5 days of school for his interventions.

Praise the Lord, so far, the childcare centres and kindy that I went to have no issue in accepting him as I assured them that he is not the violent type and is HF ASD. And thankfully, he didn't give any troubles to the teachers except for the current kindy, he has the tendency to want to stand up and move after 10mins of sitting down. His teacher is very nice and gives me timely updates of his behaviour in class. When she shared with me about him wanting to move around, I gave her suggestions that she can adopt and explain to her why he behaves certain way. The teacher actually tried my suggestion and it worked. But I know it will take sometime for my boy to settle down, its the same in his previous centres and Berries. I am very thankful that I have met helpful teachers so far.

Those with lower teacher-student ratio centres may or may not be accommodating. I feel that alot of it depends on the willingness of the teachers and the principal. Is it possible for you to send him to a church kindy? I reckon they will be more accommodating. My son is currently in a church kindy.

I think one way you can try is to test out the childcare centrs by asking them if they have vacancy, when they say yes, then you reveal your son's condition. Because by then, they can't give excuses that their centres are full. If they reject without even letting your son try, I think such centres are not worth going as they lack the passion to help your kid. Keep searching, I am sure you can find one. Good luck.

Hi Srumpee, thanks for sharing your experience. I am very much encouraged and comforted by your words. I'm also of the view to inform the principals and teachers of his condition. Not just that being honest, the other thing is that I do not want my son to be considered naughty or misbehaving for some of his quirky behaviours or meltdowns when he is not. I want him to be treated right though I know it wont be easy.

And yes, I agree with your suggestion on asking the childcare if they have vacancies first. Save me a lot of explaining.

Somehow all the childcares are packed to the full near my area, including church kindergarten. So I'll research those childcare/kindergarten in Jurong East, Clementi or Choa Chu Kang.

I managed to find more options:
1) Ichiban in CCK
2) ICCP - I know the waiting list is long but lets try anyway. Lets call CEL tomorrow
3) Eager Beaver in Clementi

I'll let you know the outcome of this Childcare Centre/Kiddy Hunt :) once I got the place.

Have a good week ahead!

Angeline,

Glad that you have managed to shortlist options. I have recently switched my son's CC, and it was a very humbling experience to have the principals suddenly backtrack and try and dissuade me from enrolling him, once I informed them that he has ASD. Thankful that we found a great CC now that is a decent fit for him.

Just want to highlight that its a good idea for you to meet the teachers that will be taking your son's class, before you enroll him. In my boy's previous CC, the teacher changed, and the new teacher had good intentions but was inexperienced and not as nurturing as the previous one. My boy ended up sensing her anxiety and starting widthrawing even more. In his current CC, the teacher has worked with SN kids before, and handles him confidently, and he in turn, is coping better.

I can fully understand the feeling of being rejection from the in-charge of the cc.
Eager Beaver bukit merah rejected my application last year before I found Cherie Hearts.

Recently, I was being so discouraged when the Shadow teacher decided to quit after 2 days working on my son at Cherie Hearts. The principal of the cc is very kind to work on my son for the past few months since January 2013 without a shadow teacher and now she has no choice but to let go my son.
God is great... he led me to St Gerard's School at Mountbatten Road and my son will switch over there in May 2013.
Each class has approx. 7-10 children, which may consist of 1-3 special needs children. They will have an hour of 1-1 teaching daily for the special needs children. The Principal is a believer and after meeting the OT and ST and some of the teachers there, I believe and pray for the best they can provide for my son.

Let us continue to work hard and believe that the breakthrough will come very soon.

Louise
My son was previously from Eager Beaver bukit merah too! It was his first CC hence he was enrolled before I knew abt his condition. But I pulled him out after 9 mths because he fell sick all the time, either fever, flu or cough and had HFMD 3 times. Although the fees are cheap, $450 per mth, I ended up paying more for medical bills.

Also, the centre has too many children with parents coming in and out of the centre quite freely. Perhaps that's why HFMD is an issue there. But I must say his teachers are helpful and the place is spacious and airy.

Hi good try, I am keen to try the social play group but Pebble Bay is on the other end of Singapore for me. If the location is a more centralised, I dont mind bringing my son there.
