Like Ricon's child, my son also has "compliance" issues according to his Teacher at EIPIC centre. This is a general term to describe his behaviour. If I sit down and analyse his issues, there are quite a few: Joint attention issues, auditory processing, hyperactive (not sure if ADHD) and OCD. According to his OT, it is a modulation problem. He writes very lightly while colouring with a lot of strength. His voice is sometimes soft and sometimes very loud. He likes to sit on edge of chair (enjoys sensory) but completes flop when it comes to wearing his clothes (avoid sensory). He sometimes loves to cuddle and sometimes pushes you away. According to Trina, his brain has yet to learn to modulate ie listens to himself and corrects his volume, control his strength when touching people. Hence he needs a lot of OT so that his brain begins to learn how to modulate. It's also good to bring him to the physical activities but must have a goal for him so that he doesn't run all over the place.
Before he learn how to modulate, he would be termed naughty, hyperactive etc. In actual fact, he is unable to control himself as his brain is wired differently from others. If left alone, the modulation problem may resolve later but if I want a shot at mainstream school for him, I just have to spend more on OT and practise more at home. The bad news is that the Government is not setting aside any Budget for these special needs kids this year. But I guess, compared to other children in his school, his condition is mild.
