(2009/04) April 2009 MTBs

Hi Ladies,

Just wondering if anyone is looking for confinement help in March, am here to recommend my confinement lady who helped with my confinement when i delivered in Aug

My confinement lady was good in the sense that:
1. She did not let me rest very long ! (kidding, in fact she wanted me to be hand-on with the baby, and made sure i picked up all the essential skills before she left)

2. She has a motherly feel (and i can feel baby really feels safe with her)

3. She is very 'Zi Dong'.. knowing when its time for her to help and when we want to try on our own..

Because my family liked her a lot.. thats why i am doing her a favour.. and she is only avail in March.

Let me know if you need confinement help ya? Thanks ladies!!

hi orangejuice, think its ok, not to worry, cos for myself, i am currently coming to 24 weeks..i had slight red discharge on and off almost throughout and it stopped recently for abt 2-3 weeks ald..each time gynae scanned and said everytime baby's fine, just tat placenta a bit on the low side. later becos i continued having the red discharge, he checked my cervix by inserting something in, and said cervix is closed, all is ok..so I guess ur brown blood spotting shld be ok, besides now can feel baby moving ald, so more assuring

Hi all Apr '09 Mummies!

Been browsing this thread for quite some time but didn't really join in the discussions, but enjoy reading what you all have wrote, really informative for a blur blur FTM like myself! =)

Regarding the issue on cord blood banking, I've done some research and read a few medical journals, my hubby and I have decided to donate our baby's cord blood to the Singapore Cord Blood Bank, though we have not really discussed with our gynae on this issue. My hubby is not for the idea of storing the cord blood as he really doesn't deem it as necessary, just like such things didn't exist in our generation.

From what I've read, should a child is diagnosed with say Leukaemia in future, and he uses his own cord blood for treatment, the genetic disorders may already exist in the cord blood so chances of relapses are there. I would think that if any mummies or daddies here are planning for a single child only, it will be good to store the cord blood cos it's like buying insurance. Otherwise, my hubby and I would prefer to donate, as it would be like doing a good deed on behalf of our baby and hopefully to help others and/or medical research if possible. Just my 2 cents' worth. =)

hi happylittlewoman, i am also thinking of donating instead after speaking to my doctor friend..do u know how to proceed to donate?

yup, my doc fren also mentioned he feels unecessary to do private cord blood banking unless there's a family history of blood disorder disease, might as well contribute to the public bank. baby cant use it for himself only for siblings

hihihi.. still remember me?? i went from april thread to may thread..

RE: cord blood..

i had my no1 stored with cordblood.. when compared against stemcord at the annual SMH exhibition.. abit more expensive but better equipment..

its better to contact the cordblood/ stemcord personnel to let them explain to u in details its better..

hi apr mummies, me thinking of organising spree for medela PIS advanced cos much cheaper to get from US..will take first 4 orders so can share shipping charges..Pls PM me for more details
happy.gif
no extra charge, just co-ordinating!

hi mummies,

just checking in to say that i did my detailed scan at 22 weeks today, all is normal and well, baby's weight is 461g and... i'm expecting a little prince. =)) as for cordblood... still have to mull over it... welcome happylittlewoman!

jacqueline: me too! except that i've to gently chide him when he stamps on my bladder or when i'm trying to sleep.

orangejuice: hmmm... i certainly hope that down there, all's ok. with regards to tightening, whenever i have excessive exertion, i do get a sense of tightening but usually not to the level of pain.

kidskidz: im glad that u n kid have recovered fully. do u still have more things to share thats not posted yet - do i need to PM u my email address?

queen: hi there, i just PM-ed u with regards to the articles - thanks in advance! =)

dodos: maybe those are braxton-hicks. orangejuice/dodos: maybe u can checkout this link - http://www.babycenter.com/0_braxton-hicks-contractions_156.bc. btw, did u receive my emails?

lovespaghetti: thanks for sharing about the sale.

iwry: just be careful of medela imports from US - u should try to get the guarantee settled first before organising... coz i remember reading 1-2 months ago in a medela BP that apparently the guarantee is not valid if u directly import from US and not via the SG supplier.

Discount for banking cord blood: They usually give good discounts @ their roadshows or seminars. If you have one of their existing customers refer you, it may be a lesser discount. What Stemcord hv offered before is they give you (new customer) the discount on registration fee and the referee receives a discount for that yr's annual storage fee. If anybody wants the referral discount for Stemcord, can approach me

Buying Breastpumps: Before purchasing any, you can consider going to Breastfeeding Mothers' Support Group (at Waterloo Street area) to try out the different brands 1st. They hv Medala + Ameda (German brand) + manual pumps. Pretty good prices for members ($25/annum fee). I read lotsa reviews and checked prices before deciding to purchase my Ameda Lactaline Dual (battery + direct electrical supply) from BMSG for only $330 after signing up as a memebr. Offer price @ dept stores abt $380. The BP came with 1yr local warranty, free one packet The First Years Milk Storage Bags too. Check out their website for info, resources, members' privileges (discounts for nursing wear) www.breastfeeding.org.sg Btw, I picked Ameda coz it's got a quieter motor -- some moms I spoke to says cannot use Medela next to baby coz whirl of motor woke up theirs...

hi dtsmummy, yup, I am aware US imports have no 1 year warranty, of cos u risk that. However, the PIS is very durable. Unlikely to face any problems for years. Also, I guess the reason why ppl choose US imports is for the pricing. Anyway, medela service centre in Spore does repairs if there are any problems with the set later on just that have to pay for the repairs of cos since there is no warranty.

I just bought a US Medela PIS (sling bag) version for S$500 - without box. Going to delivery tonight. If you interested to purchase, I see how is it, if ok, can pass you the contact.

I went to BMSG, the cheapest is $630+...PIS (Backback style).

re: Medela pump
saw from First Few Years website that Medela PIS (backpack style) is going for $599... compared to Mums n Babe which is selling for easily over $600, close $700..

mummies.. any idea why is there a difference?
kindda confused.. cos PIS has got so many different style...
sad.gif

In Singapore, I think PIS (Backpack) is generally selling around $700. You will get 1 year warranty.

For the PIS (Sling bag) style, I think it's pretty new. So not sure much, but I guesed it's same price.

yes..
anyone knows the difference? From what i heard s that the sling back shld be cheaper than the backpack but for the first few years web is the other way round?????

there's also another cheaper medela pump on the webbie:
MEDELA NEW Pump In Style Original Breastpump: $419.00

Wat's the difference Original and Advanced?

PIS Advanced: "The new 2008 Pump In Style Advanced features the latest Improved 2-Phase Expression‚Technology allows moms to toggle back and forth from stimulation to expression phase."

tis is e diff for Advanced whereas Original do not have...

hi mummies, i've been to the first few years at paragon to check out, so far this is the cheapest in town that I know of. Dept store are selling at the price of $700++ even with a 20% still doesnt match the price of first few years. It also comes with a 15mths warranty. Besides the difference that Ciarie posted, new 2008 pump in style advanced motor can be removed from the bag, the older version's motor cannot be taken out of the bag

juxta... u've used the pump before?
actually, i've tried Avent UNO & Ameda Lactaline before... both are ok..

was thking maybe this time around, invest in a good one for faster expression to save time and effort and hopefully can express more using a better pump...
happy.gif

is it a 15mo or 12mo guarantee?
tot is 12mo....
sad.gif

Ciarie, no i havent use it b4, i was on Avent manual for no. 1, thinking of getting PIS this time to cut down time? A few of my gfs got the PIS, so thinking of getting it to save some effort too. First few years offers a 15mths warranty, I just been to the shop less than 1 month back.

Hi mummies
i just came back from the Carter's warehouse sales.
Lots of rompers going for $10 for 3
Carter's rompers $8 for 5 pcs.
Baby Blanket $4 a pc...

Many nice clothes for bb gals... much better selection than the boys. As usual. hehe

Ameda is 12M warranty. But things like Pigeon Steam Steriliser is 15M coz they know you buy b4 baby even delivered -- quite considerate.

Medela 2-phase technology tries to mimic how baby actually suckles. At start to get milk flowing is lotsa quick suckles. Once flow is going, suckles less instense in force and in frequency.

In terms of faster expression, I actually found that using Avent Isis Manual was best coz I manually pump as hard as I want to get flow going "fast and furious" but to my comfort level of course. However, manul pumps only for one side so you'll find other breast leaking -- thus I ended up investing in the Ameda Lactaline Dual.

Other thing to consider (but not truly necessary) is getting the Pumping Pals "hanger" to hold both funnels in your nursing bra and keep your hands free as the electric pump works. Some mommies have even suggested just use rubber bands to loop around funnel mouth and hook to the "latch-up hook" on nursing bra. Food for thought...

juxta.... trust it will surely save time & effort, cos avent manual is 1 at a time, whereas PIS is 2 at a time..
happy.gif

Wow! 15mo guarantee is good!!!
happy.gif
happy.gif

thiking to get a 2nd hand pump at first.. but now, since if its $599, sounds affordable... maybe will get a new one..
happy.gif

you? thiking to get this as well?

I was @ the sale this AM too. Bought lots for B1 coz she hit growth spurt. Picked bigger sizes too coz we now use dryer and her clothes get lagi smaller... Managed to pick some things for B2 too -- but amount to only about 30% of overall purchase since not as much variety for boys (yeah, the usual...)

There's express Q for 5 items or less. Otherwise bring hubby along to book plc in Q. Me and friend where queuing and even ended up looking after this boy who was behind us as his mom shopped. But the mom decided in the end to come back early next day instead...

Hi iwry, I haven't contacted the Singapore Cord Blood Bank yet, will do so soon and perhaps post up the details of donating cord blood here. Meanwhile you may wish to check out their webby at www.scbb.com.sg

Hi DTSmummy, thanks for your welcome! =) I had my detailed scan at 20w5d last Fri, and I was so glad that everything turned out perfectly ok for my little princess. Can understand your sense of relief after that, cos I read some sad stories of possible birth defects detected and it's just so devastating for these parents...

To all mummies: Do you all think Ameda Lactaline or Medela PIS is more worth getting? I'm actually set on getting Ameda Lactaline but now seeing the popularity of Medela PIS... kinda hesitant now. Just FYI, I read from the other threads that if you all wanna get the US import version, you have to get an adaptor as the voltage is different. For myself, as I am planning to bring the pump to work to express milk if possible, hence would prefer a local version of the PIS... so the conclusion if First Few Years sells the PIS cheapest in Singapore as of now?

Ciarie: You may be able to get good bargain for 2nd hand pump still with warranty coz many mommies don't continue bfdg for long. Just invest in new funnels, valves, etc. for hygiene. In the end when you source for it nearer delivery date, you may get one with 6M warranty left and just nice for your own 6M pumping. Coz flow may not be as much after that and you can switch to manual pump.

I picked Ameda coz quieter motor + the system doesn't allow contamination of milk as you pump. But not sure if Medala has caught up in this dept already. Do more research
happy.gif

Btw, mommies going back to work see if anyone else pumping in office. My friend didn't even bring her Medela to work coz colleague did. My friend just brought her own funnels, bottle, etc. Think 3 of them shared the "motor".

kidzkidz...
do u pump in your office?
cos right now... my new office is open concept, and i doubt there'll be a pte room (though we have 1 lactation room, but used as storeroom now) will be available by then...
sad.gif

so wonder how am i gg to pump milk in office..
sad.gif

i used to try the rubber band method, but it dun work for Uno... cos its the whole motor attached to the funnel. but i think it will work for the dual pump cos its just e funnel.

another way is the clip it in with the nursing bra itself, cos the funnel is quite light.
happy.gif
only.
happy.gif

I went for the sales today too and can't get enough of it. But hubby says cannot spend so much. Girls clothes are really pretty. I love the 2 pcs set carters. wanted to stay longer but hubby say he can't stand the heat and the crowd.

kidzkidz... i did tot of buying 2nd hand pump which i done so for my 1st one...
happy.gif

lots more affordable. but maybe cant get now if i want to cos some may just left with few months warranty which is not enuf to sustain through my new arrival...

maybe like wat u said, will source when closer to edd....
happy.gif

hi dodos ,
yah girls clothes are really pretty.. do u remember how much the 2 pc set cost? cos my fren is asking

my hubby also say dont buy too much hahaha. i bought one t shirt for him $4 to appease him hahahaha.

Hi kidzskidz
