Also, a formula to share (extract fr mrs wong bk):

Amt of feed = (150ml x wt of bb) / no.of feeds per day

Thanks Ivy and winnie for ur kind advise! I just started packing my hospital bag and dun wanna lug unwanted stuff along... Today i felt some cramps and contraction pain when i was on the bus and start to panick and thought bb might arrive earlier than my EDD..

By reading all the posts here by mummies who have alrdy popped, i am feeling scared and near depression that i may not be able to handle BB well. Sighzz

Paulyn: Don't be stressed. Sometimes i also feel very upset when i can't seem to calm my bb down. Maybe your boy is tired/overstimulated/bored or needs burping. Hang on & don't cry ok? We're all here to support each other.

does baby burp properly? sometimes may due to that. or maybe ya boy wanted to poo. and cant poo? slowly you will know more n more baby why cry. like today. my gal keep crying.. not sure why.. as i did everything. then today then i know a new thing. she cry cus she got a block nose! after i help her clear she keep quiet. try to calm down and not depress why baby cry ya. still got alot of new things for us to be experience with our lil ones. hehe

aiyo..jialut..i have engorgement on my right breast this morning again n feeling fever..luckily this time i faster massage n pump out..did not let my hb know, else he will 100% ask me to stop bf! hmm..i dunno ...seems like my supply is lower now...only have 1.5bottle in fridge for little Gerrad..

I have shift back to my parent's place since ytd..cos hb got to work starting fri..he scare i cannot handle. last nite he was taking care boi boi..till 12.30am..n what happen was i was napping...and suddenly I shouted "baby "en ni" (vomit milk), my hb was laughing...as my boi was just crying cos he is hungry..haha..think i am also abt stress up liao...

Kath, can help to update? Carmen gave birth to little Kasia on 9 Dec, natural w epi n adelchia is also natural w epi..

finally we have finalise our boi's name! He is call Liew Zi Chong, Gerrard...it was an headache to choose his name..either i dun like but daddy like..or i like, daddy dun like...anyway..my chinese level is terrible..so as long i can write his chinese name character will do..keke

btw, how many times ur bb poo poo a day? mine average 4-5x..n worse is..he will poo n when u open his napkin and clean nicely for him..he will poo or pee or u! His pee aiming v good..so far...many has kena from him!

lol.. me too man today wake up breast damn pain, infact i should be pumping like in the middle of the night. but im so tired everytime.. so didnt wake up.. then now. damn pain till i dare not even touch.. and now got to sit here for long liao.

my bb poo alot too wor.. haha till now my gal havent poo on me.. but she poo and pee on my mum before. haha so funny de.. =X

Yesterday just read this from mrs wong book and felt might be useful for you mummies.. my hands are free now so i shall type to share with you all for those who dun have her book hehehe. Hope it helps you all too..

Possible causes of crying
- Hunger: Feed your baby on demand; be flezible
- Temperature: Do not overdress your child
- Illness
- Lack of contact: Babies need plenty of physical contact
- Undressing: Dirty diapers, changing clothes
- Colic: Discomfort due to swallowing excess air.
- Tiredness: Babies have short attention spans; allow your baby to set his pace of contact time.
- Boredom: Play and communicate with your baby; sing or talk to him
- Anxiety and frustration: Allow him a comforter(pacifier); distract him.
- Violent or sudden stimulation: Soothing actions

Types of crying
- Hunger: Loud, sudden and urgent as he grows older, and builds up to a demanding scream.
- Loneliness: Cries, grizzles, then moans. If no attention is given soon, it becomes a frightening scream.
- Wind: Short, shrill scream with pauses in between other signs such as bloated stomach.
- Soreness or discomfort: Whimpers at the beginning; gradually increasing to a loud cry
- ill: High pitch and prolonged; usually comes with signs such as fever.
- Exhaustion: Whimpers, whines and gradually builds up to screaming with frustrations.
- Teething: Grizzles irritably with signs such as chewing fists and dribbling.

Ways to soothe a crying baby
Movement
- Rock, walk or dance with our baby
- Bounce him gently in your arms or on your thighs
- Take him for a ride in car, pram or sling

Sound
- Talk to sing to your baby
- switch on the radio, television, washing machine or vacuum cleaner
- Use a noisy toy
- Play some soothing music.

Possible crying Problems
Temper Tantrums
Sometimes your baby cries to ger your attention. This happens when you leave your child alone for too long. Leave him alone for only short periods of time and watch him to see if he gets better. Do not lose your temper with him. Cajole him rather than punish him.

Night Time Crying
Establish a rhythm for your baby at night. His bedtime should be happy. Relax your baby with a bath, followed by a song, a drink or short story. Then send him to bed with a firm "Goodnight".

hi mummies,

TOTAL LATCH ON
anyone on total lacth on so far? how is ur feeding at nite? i'm basically got to wake up every hr to BF my bb coz i was too tired so juz lie down with bb to latch on, in the end i & bb fall asleep & think that's y bb had not enuf & kept on waking at nite...

but there was one nite i dunno why super awake so everytime can juz sit up to BF bb & 'made' him suck for both breast & therefore last him for at least 2hr, but i can't be everynite also so awake like this lor, SUPER TIRED!

PUMPING
i hardly pump coz i hope to go for total latch on, scare that feed him too much thru bottle then in the end will cause nipple confusion(unless i really really tired which normally i will try not to bottle feed him more than 2 times a day)... so my EBM in fridge only 2 packet nia, hehe... & that's for my mum to bottle feed him when i'm on my massage...

HICCUP
my bb always got hiccup ler, dunno why? my mum always want to feed him water whenver she sees him hiccup but i'm quite reluctant ler coz i read somewhere that BF-ing bb doesnt need water for the first 6 mths, right?

so wat u do when bb hiccup?

u was waiting for available 2 bedder ar? tot they r not full ler coz during my stay i was staying 'alone' for 2 nites ler, & i was so kepo go & ask the nurse if the room not full then they said yes, still got 2 or 3 vacant 2 bedder rooms ler...

for BM supply, first few days r like that one ler, tat time i oso very discouranging... only can pump out less than 10ml for both side ler, but never giv up ler... i think best is latch on lor, the more u feed the more supply will come in... i'm now one week already & this morning i pump nearly 140ml for both sides ler, so happy! so JIAYOU ok...

ask u gals again... for massage, both u were saying tat u leave the binder for overnite rite?
u mean u leave both (the long cloth & ur own binder) for overnite or u juz put on the long cloth only? coz i find that very difficult for me to BF la if i put on both somemore overnite, so normally i will untie my own binder before going to bed & leave the long white cloth, so at least i feed more comfortable & not so hot...

Hiccups
Hiccups are sudden, involuntary jerky contractions of the diaphragm muscle. They are very common in babies and they generally do not last more than a few mins. It is trivial and caused by the stretching or irritation of the stomach when food or fluids is consumed too quickly or in excessive amounts. Hiccups usually stop on their own. If your baby has hiccups, give him some water and burp him. If the hiccups persist, become prolonged or severe (which is rare), consult your doctor.

Geez my engogrement damn pain sia.. pump finish liao. i still have the pain there again. now gonna pump again and massage. its so hard at the bottom breast leh. anyone knows whats the fasters way to cure it?

Sometimes at night i feel so uneasy then i will take out before i sleep lor. is better to wrap till morning lor.. What you do is okai also ah.. you can take out at night. but BEST is u put it overnight hehe.

I'm also trying for total latch on. My baby had some problems latching at first. At first, we persisted with trying to latch but after a week we started giving her a bottle of EBM whenever she was crying too much and refusing to latch. But we later went to see a lactation consultant to improve her latch, so now we are trying to go back on total latch on again.

Night feeds are quite difficult. But must persevere! In her first week, she was also waking up every hour to nurse for 10-15 mins before falling asleep. Because she only nursed for short period of time, she would get hungry soon and wake up again in about 1-2 hours' time. Now, bb is 2 weeks old and her night feeds are improving. I can usually get her to feed for about 30-40 mins (15-20 mins each side), which will last her for a few hours. I read that night-time milk flow is a bit slower, which is why babies take longer to feed or don't feed as well. Maybe you can try having a warm drink before and during your feed? You have to be hydrated so that your milk ss and milk flow will be good. Also, you should always try to offer both breasts to your baby, even after he pops off the first breast, so that he can have the chance to eat some more if he's still hungry.

My baby also gets a lot of hiccups. The TMC midwife told us that hiccups means that baby's stomach is expanding, so it's very normal. We can either leave it to clear up on its own, or we can try to burp the baby to clear the hiccups. Better not to drink water, because baby should be filling his stomach with BM and not water. If you feed water, he will not have space in his tiny tummy to drink enough BM.

oh for the binder, u only wrap the long white cloth ar? for me normally after massage, the ML will wrap the long cloth then after tat put on my own binder, so total two, that's y very tight & super hot... buay tahan.. haha

Fabbie, isit blocked ducts? If yes, I find it very effective to have my bb suckle and within seconds, the blocked ducts will be gone. I find bb suckling very amazing!

Jess: Don't worry about hiccups...Preston has them almost daily. Usually i just carry him and the hiccups will go away after a few minutes. I don't give him water or anything else. It's quite comical to see him having hiccups though! Haha...

Fabbie: Wake up to pump better! If not your boobs will feel painful & very engorged! I wake once in the night to pump (around 3 or 4am) & i pump once before i sleep (around 11pm or 12 midnight).

btw, i always try my best to offer him both breast but he's too comfort to suck liao & always fall asleep ler, eventhough i try to tickle him, unwrap his cloth & do watever i can, he also boh chap, juz sleep & snore... argh!!!

hot drink before offer him BM? hmm... morning still not a problem but at nite think quite diff coz he will for sure scream all the way while waiting for me to 'enjoy' my hot drink... haha! anyway i will try out... thanks for the suggestion ya!

yalor, this morning when i pump i also got shock ler coz i hardly pump so din knoe tat my supply has increased... or maybe in early morning bah coz ppl said normally morning supply will be more... also, i think latch on does help to stimulate more BM supply... & it's more convenient also, no need to warm up bottle, bb can straight drink fr ur breast...

jess,i only wrap the white cloth,recently just got my binder than i am using two.but today i am starting to have rashes...so i only use my binder. its best to leave overnight....but so far,i dont wanna sleep uncomfortably so i took it out before i sleep.

for engorgement, i put hot towel on my breasts, massage them, then pump .....after 10 mins of pumping, i put hot towel again, massage and pump for another 10 mins...

I'm on total latch-on.. initially in the first week.. I had to wake up almost every hour to breastfeed... It was crazy.. but now in my 2nd week... can see improvement.. she'll wake up every 2-3 hours to feed... and she somehow seems to drink faster.. now she can latch on to my breast for about 15 mins and then only need to be fed in about 2 hours time.. I read that breastfeeding babies usually require feeding every 2-3 hours... I also take note of the no. of times she poos and pees.. output means got input.. =)

Jess, I'm going on full latch on. Last night tried to introduce first EBM bottle to David, but he refused. In the end still went back to latch on. He's 17 days old now and normally wakes up every 2 hours to feed... day and night makes no diff to him. I still can't get him to "finish" one breast leh. So I try to feed from one breast per session until he dozes off. Usually, he feeds about 10 - 15 minutes per session.

The pumping part confuses me. I still dunno when I should pump, since he's latching on so often. I think ideally is to pump everything out after each feed is it? But I'm scared I'll have no milk to offer by the next feed leh. He is still resistant to the NUK pigeon teat...is it too hard, so he doesn't want to drink?

Hiccups: Yah, David gets them a lot too. According to the books, it doesn't cause them much discomfort, but sometimes he throws up quite a bit of milk when he hiccups, and I'm quite concerned leh. I'm very bad at burping the baby. Sometimes burp and burp and he has no response. I give up after a while, because he looks so uncomfortable in that "sitting" position.

I'm doing the same as u.. 1 breast per feeding.. alternate them..

I try using avent teats and Lisa doesn't seem to have much of a prob although it takes longer for her to start sucking.. like she is trying something new..but i feel weird giving her the bottle.. that's why I dun want to express my milk yet..

U can pump after each feed if u want.. No lah.. the milk will produce quite fast, i think.. I read somewhere.. that u can express again after an hour.. no probz..

Breastfeeding usually require less burping then botle fed ones.. spit ups are normal.. sometimes cos there is too much milk.. try not to move the bb soo much after each feed and I usually keep her upright for a while before laying her back to bed.. she will usually sleep quite soundly.. if she has some bubble trapped in her stomach, she'll feel uncomfortable and let u know.. usually if he sleeps after feeding, he is quite a contented baby.. =)

I think the best is to pump out right after each feed, to give your breasts time to replenish before the next feed.

Do you try offering David the second breast? Sometimes, even though Emma has fallen asleep at the first breast, when I put her to the second one, she will wake up and latch again for another 10 mins. Maybe you might want to try that? If he takes more at each feed, you might be able to have a longer stretch of peace, especially at night!

The first time I had to give my baby a bottle of EBM, I cried. Felt like I had failed because I couldn't get her to latch

She also doesn't take to the bottle very well, needs some 5-10 mins to adjust to the artificial nipple. Good thing is that her latch has improved a lot now, so I haven't had to give her a bottle for the last couple of days. Just direct latch, much easier.

Does Lisa always sleep after feeding? Emma has been very fussy the last couple of days. Often stays awake after feeding, and will fuss and fuss. Sometimes she'll cry, or she'll be hiccupping and cannot sleep. Very stressful for my hb and I, especially when it happens at night at her 2am feed! Sigh..

9.20am - 4.5cm dilate (ONLY!! Haiya! was hoping for more..)
- gynae broke waterbag, bb alr poo a bit.. he predicted bb'll be out by 2pm
1pm - had some urge down there but not sure.. so called the nurse.. and asked.. she said better don't play-play coz 2nd preg, anything goes.. so she did VE to confirm.. 7cm dilate.. contraction still bearable..
2pm - 9cm dilate, gynae felt baby head facing wrong side.. so rotated bb's head.. that hurts, man!
2.15pm - 1st wave strong sensation to push.. not very sure real or not.. waited for 2nd one.. CONFIRM really want to push.. pressed bell for nurse.. told her wanna push liao! they all geared up while waiting for gynae to come in.. while dressing up my knees, next contraction wave came in and told them, "baby wanna come out alr!!" i was a bit tensed and my knees went inward.. nurse asked me to open up, told them to let me relax first.. then next wave came in and i said, "baby coming! baby coming!".. gynae already injected LA and cut me.. could feel the "ring-of-fire" when baby crowned!!
2.28pm - did 2 more pushes and bb's out!! WHAT A RELIEF!!

wah, just as gynae predicted.. 5 hrs of labor.. 2 hrs later, i got out of my bed to pee and see baby at nursery.. HB went home to pick #1 from childcare.. a bit bored inside the room alone.. so couldn't wait..

gynae cleared alot of the clogs right after delivery and my lochia's clearing up alot now..

baby suckling well.. but he's like a ferocious eater! nipple was a bit sore coz he sucks hard! milk came in the 3rd day..

now still trying to learn baby's routine.. so far he slept 2 hours straight but other time he drinks/sleep in short intervals..

Congrats! Wow you had a short labour. I wish my gynae had turned my bb's head around, too. My bb was delivered in the posterior position, and I tore a lot, with a lot of stitches. Good luck with breastfeeding!

my boi throws up milk when he hiccups as well. he hiccups pretty often n makes him unable to slp.

any ladies giving bb pacifier? my boi kips wanting to suck on smting all d time. laz resort is to give pacifier. haiz.

Fabbie , according to the chart my girl already drink: 2-4 week______3-4oz(90-120)______5-6 Days
no more 60ml of EBM... but if formula, i still give her 60-80ml only

Fong2 - pump till milk flow becomes very slow, then can stop. I pump manually - by hand, around 10 min for each breast. Most of the time, I choose to let him latch on directly. one website says, baby will get 80% of the BM in 4 mins sucking, and get 100% in 10 mins. So I guess latch on is more efficient. I normally let my baby suck 5-7mins for each side.
