hope ur curry turns out well .... tell u my dumbo curry experience in london in 1997 ......
was trying to cook curry also, and i pour the entire grated coconut into the pot, thinking the milk will be squeezed out tat way .. sadly, it didnt quite pan out like tat ... and i had to spend quite a bit of time to remove these and spoil my curry along the way !!!

Mummies, when you are surveying playgroups for your lil tot, do make an effort not to call the school to let them know that you are going. And, drop by the school in the morning at about 9 to 9.30am. That is the best timing to gauge the quality of the teachers and their capability in managing the children.
I visited one of the Pgs yesterday morning. The whole center was filled with noise pollution. The classes comprises of the older tots was assembled and cramped in this small music room and the radio was switched on at a loud blast. Not much interaction going in the music class and there was only one teacher, sitting on a stool at the front of the class … doing some minimal gesturing. Opposite the music room was a corner for the lil tots aged around 18 months. There were two teachers caring for them; one Chinese and one Malay. I reached at 9.30am and the tots sat there looking so blur … they were supposed to build some blocks but I noticed that there weren’t any interaction and communication between the teachers and the tots. To make things worst, there is this little boy who is attending class the first day and was crying his lungs out before I enter the centre till I leave the center. My visit lasted about 45 minutes. Nonetheless, the Muslim teacher didn’t do much to pacify him (she doesn’t seems how to handle tots) and the worst part is that when she is trying to catch hold of him, I could see ¾ of the boobs! She was dressed very sexily for the industry that she is in. The whole center is really in chaos … and I didn’t even sense any classroom management skills there… this is really one of the worst centers that I have seen.

Just got back from Jacob Ballas Children's Garden at Botanical Gardens, super fun and educational !! Do bring change of clothings for the little ones cos there's water play there. Best to go early, before the heat becomes too unbearable.

Pauline: Hmm, the PG you visited sounds chaotic indeed. I'm sending ER for his playgroup later. Hopefully things will turn out fine. When I last visited centre to take a look at about 915am, it wasn't chaotic but that could be becos of the small number of students in the centre. The teacher wasn't interacting with the tots in the 'waiting' room. The formal lesson supposedly start at 930am. Honestly speaking, it's difficult to get a good PG given financial & distance constraint.
Joy: The PG in Pasir Ris that you went (think PIC is called Ross?). How did you feel about it? Can PM me on the exact location/pricing/details? You mentioned that she's only starting classes in Mar08, right?

1. Values that the school will be culturing. I don’t want Kell to be brought up in a too westernized culture.
2. Curriculum focus.
3. Teachers’ qualifications: are they qualified with Dip or Degree specializing in Early Childhood Education from NIE. It does make a difference. It seems like most of the local schools are populated with teachers from China.
4. Classroom management skills

The playgroup that you went...sound like those I surveyed before (4 of them). I dare not send G there. I just drop by and didnt call so can see what is really happening:
1. the principal speaks bad English, much worse than my half baked English...And the centre suppose to have morris allen English programme.
2. I heard the teacher scolded the whole class consisting mixture of big and small children loudly. I dont understand how she could expect the toddlers to understand all her instructions. Looks like shortage of teachers too.
3. our kid;s age group were confined in a small area much like sheeps in the pen. Like your case, looked blur and bored playing with some blocks. Apart from the blocks, the pen was empty.
4. looks pretty disorganised and dirty.

Went to the trial on 29 Dec. Pretty alright. I still prefer Kidloft's Teacher Lavina so am signing Gabby up for this term since Ros only starts in March...but can't imagine all the transport cost and distance...but tell myself just for this term.
Ros is approx 18 lessons at S$360+S$15 materials per term. Home based so cozy environment. She just got some materials from US for toddler class. Nice small class size, also incorporating some flashcards, eye training ala SM style...some zoophonics etc. I like it coz of small class size and at east side. But think in terms of professional training on handling toddlers, find Lavina at kidsloft still the best so far imo.

Pauline: Yup, I know what you mean. But it's tough to find such an ideal PG which fit our criteria 8( My objective of PG now is more of exposing ER to interact with other kids. See how things go first.
ER's day 1 at PG went fine. Only cried for a while when he can't see me. The asst teacher carried & pacified him. Another 3 kiddos also cried and they were pacified mainly via distraction tactics. He waved goodbye and smiled at the teachers when I picked him up, so think the session was ok for him. ER & another boy are the only 2 18mth olds in the group of about 15. The rest are 2+, 3+ yo. Actually, it makes me wonder how they do activities together.
