March 2018 Mummies

hihi, no rashes for me but i am having patchy red skin on my face like it's constantly very dry. When I have no makeup on, i always look like i just finished exercising. My mum also commented that my palms and underside of the foot look so reddish these days like all the blood in my body are gushing towards these parts of the body.

I told my hubby I think I'm imploding. o_O

I'm also having red and dry skin on my face. Been washing my face quite a few time a day, so it won't feel so dry. I also putting water gel on my face, hope it works. Anyone have any recommendations to stop red n dry skin.

Hello jellynova, I agree with Shazza05. 14th week does sound a little late. Your 1st trimester would have been over by then. It will be good to get yourself an appointment with a private gynae first. You don't have to take on any packages if you don't wish to. The private gynaes will just charge you for consultation + ultrasound + any supplements u take from the clinic. My gynae's package only starts from 14 weeks onwards so any visits before will still be charged as per normal, on per visit basis.
Hi hygeia, thanks for the advice. I will book an appointment to do the requisite scans for first trimester with a private gynae.

Hi kellyunik, snail mucin products are good for easing redness in skin. I also read that pregnant women should avoid any beauty products that has retinol and BHA.

Don't wash your face too often, but can try layer on your moisturiser like the 7 skin method.

Hi ladies, I chose the subsidised route with a referral from a polyclinic to NUH. But my first appointment is when I'm at week 14. Is that too late?

I'm at week 8 now. Should I go to a women's clinic to get a scan first? I'm not sure how things work at a private gynaecologist. It seems like it's all package-based.
usually they advise to do Oscar blood test at ard 11 weeks and scan between 11 to 13 weeks 6 days. So 14 weeks seems a bit late.

Not true tt private gynaes go by packages. Most go by per consultation and you can choose a pkg of you want.

Hi! I just joined here and my EDD is on 26 mar 2018. I just returned from my gynae visit and she mentioned about the oscar and various blood test which she would be discussing with me during the next visit. Can anyone share the estimated costs of such tests, as well as the pros and cons? Thanks in advance!
Tests like Oscar, Harmony and Panorama is to test for trisomies, where Down's syndrome is one such trisomy.

Oscar is usually done around week 11 to 13 weeks 6 days. Blood test usually done around week 11 and a scan done at around week 13. The scan measures the fluid at the back of the neck and nasal bone. A combination of these results will give you a risk calculation of trisomies. Oscar does not give you a yes or no. Just estimated risk. Hence Oscar is not very reliable but very cheap. If Oscar result shows high risk, then mum may be offered to do further non invasive testing like Harmony (not 100% but more reliable than Oscar). Otherwise an invasive option is amniocentesis where they use a needle to take some amniotic fluid to do chromosomal testing. Amnio result is 100% and can show gender. But got slight chance of miscarriage. Overall Oscar is cheap (about $300) but not very reliable and depends on baby's cooperation during the scan. If baby not facing properly, have to go out and rescan again.

Harmony and Panorama are also both non invasive tests and involve a blood test. Accuracy is higher than Oscar as they test the fetal serum in mum's blood. Panorama can be done from 9 weeks and Harmony from 10 weeks. Results take about 2 weeks. Both cost about $1k with Panorama being slightly more expensive as it is slightly more accurate and can show baby's gender. Some choose to skip Oscar and go straight to Harmony.

Apart from the above tests, dr will also request for routine blood tests like complete blood count (check or iron levels and anaemia), hiv/syphilis/hep B.

He was having a chat with the nurses and I felt that put me at ease since he is so experienced and that it is a walk in the park for him.

heh in my case we had been told that my baby's heart defect which was detected at 12wk nuchal scan and confirmed at the 20th week detailed scan could be due to down's or DiGeorge syndrome. So he asked why am i doing the amnio since i was only 31yo then and i told him what the genetics counsellor told us. I'd expected the doctor to be more sympathetic or perhaps reassuring but instead he turned to the nurses and started joking about some George person they knew and the nurses and him were laughing away. Maybe i was too sensitive and already very worried and depressed, but it wasn't funny at all to me. I felt his bedside manners could have been better.

Oscar test with accuracy 90% and harmony test with 99.9% accuracy able to test the baby gender too.

I went to see a private gynae for assurance first. Most wouldn't into a package till maybe after 1st tri. Its pay per visit basis. you can check with the clinic when you make the appointment.

My gynae have given be Folic Acid, Prenavit and Calcium Carbonate. Now I am on my week 12 should I continue eating this 3 vitamin?

Hi newbie reporting!

My edd is 3Mar.
I'm worried that it will be earlier and nearer to the cny period. Still considering to give birth in kkh or tmc.

My gynae have given be Folic Acid, Prenavit and Calcium Carbonate. Now I am on my week 12 should I continue eating this 3 vitamin?
The general advice is to take any prescribed supplements all the way (into breastfeeding stage as well). If you are uncertain, is best to ask your gynae.

Just visited gynae this morning. Happy to see good growth since 1st visit 10 days ago, EDD 31 mar, and hear even more active heartbeat at 177bpm.
Dr also talked about oscar and nipt options today, will have to make our choice next visit 2 weeks later. My dr gets all his patients to do oscar, then the nipt is optional. He says there are things that the scan can pick up (like structural problems with heart) that the nipt blood test alone won't.
Dr also reminded to guard against zika, so we're getting repellent later.

yes that's exactly what happened with my #3. He had a structural heart defect which was picked up during the oscar scan, and subsequently confirmed during the 20th week detailed scan. I would be quite uneasy this round if we are only doing the nipt without the oscar scan... shall see what my gynae says on Mon as i'll be 9 weeks at the appt

The doc did a scan to check the organs at abt 13w after I did the nipt blood test at 11w. He says nipt cannot detect other physical issues so that scan is necessary. But there were no specific measurements take except for nt.

2angels2016,

prof biswas did the scan personally? that's reassuring to hear. I'm thinking due to age (>35) i should probably do the NIPT but was worried it would mean missing out on the oscar scan. Even for my #3 the sono only took measurements for the nt, but noted on the charts that the beginnings of structural heart defects were observed. My next appt is coming up on monday and i'm so nervous about it, worrying that for some reason or other it won't be good news even though we'd already seen the heartbeat at 6 weeks. Doesn't help that hb is equally nervous! we're just waiting for the weekend to be over so that i can go for the appt

Nope, I did it with the other gynae who I was seeing. Today is my first appt with prof biswas, he also did a quick scan on the head, stomach etc and told me all looks fine.

I chose nipt also because of my age, cos the older we are, the higher the risk will be when they calculate it at oscar. I didn't want to go through additional stress if oscar is unfavourable. Totally feel you cos I was also very worried due to my mc history. Even when each scan goes ok, I will wonder what's going on inside till the next visit.

I hope everything goes well in your next visit! It WILL be fine! :)

I'm intending to visit gynae in about 3 weeks time when I'm at about week 7. But morning sickness has started setting in. This is my #2. Had severe ms with #1.

What about for you ladies? :)
Hi, my morning sickness set in after 6w. It was horrible. Very bloated n keep burping n vomiting almost daily immediately after eating. Reduce food portion, change diet to more fruit n veg doesn't seems to help. Now vomiting is part of routine ‍♀️ loss 400g from the first check up. Gynae say it's fine cos fetus is growing well. However if i feel really terrible I can request for drip at the 24hrs clinic.
Lemon water helps but Chinese sinseh say it is for losing weight for not wise. Yet some say drk ginger water but Tt will cause jaundice for bb. I guess just take whatever Tt helps w the nausea first. Afterall it should go away after first trim.

I'm seeing my gynae next Mon as I have a history of recurrent early miscarriages (around 6 to 7 weeks) and would need blood thinner medication, hormone support and monitoring of progesterone levels in early weeks. This is my #2 but 4th pregnancy.
Hi dear, this is my first but 3rd pregnancy. Always lost around 8w did a chk on my last d&c, fetus has 45 chromosomes only hence it cannot grow further n in any if it continues to grow, it will b deformed probably one limb lesser. After the 2nd loss, I went to see sinseh in marine parade who major in women's. Successfully within mths, I'm pregnant again. This time 9w chk is stable n growing well. Perhaps u wanna try tcm at blk 81 marine parade

After my 2nd miscarriage (consecutive in a row) my gynae sent me for blood test to check for common issues that cause recurrent miscarriages like anti phospholipid syndrome (APS, increased blood clotting) and anti nuclear antibody (ANA) where autoimmune systen may attack healthy cells. Both were negative. Even after seeing rheumatology specialist also it was inconclusive, just that I have some natural killer (NK) cells. Apart from that I have no other symptoms of an auto immune disease.

Anyway, my gynae was aware of studies that taking low dose aspirin daily for women with recurrent miscarriages may help (perhaps reduce blood clotting) so he prescribed me to be on that for my 3rd pregnancy (I went to see him early ard 4-5 weeks), all the way till 30 something weeks and seened to help. May want to speak with your gynae about this.
Prof Han was very chilled even on my 2nd miscarriage. He suggested to test the fetus if I want but he thinks it is not necessary s they usually offered to those 4x n above. Reason being miscarriage is very common 1out of 4. Moreover pregnancy rate after 30yrs old drop below 20%, n the miscarriage rate goes the other way ⬆️. I still went ahead with the test on fetus n found out its the common issue- fetus stop growing s chromosomes stop developing further. Now the 3rd pregnancy, he is still chilled and suggest let nature decide. Only given progesterone that helps with the implantation of fetus onto the uterus wall which work up to 8w. Other than Tt, only folic acid.

Just tested positive on 5 July and it is our first positive. We have been ttc for the past 6 years and finally we conceived after a series of tests and checks in KKH.

Down with a super bad sore throat now... anyone having fever and sore throat after getting positive results?
Pregnancy make your body heaty cos ur body need to b warm in order to keep the fetus. Better see doc for med if u r having fever, it may affect the fetus if it gets too high. But remember this time u cannot take Liang Teh, u cannot eat cooling food. U only take drk more water, fruits. Soup w no herbs, no salted veg not Liang type. So best is abc soup n black bean lotus root. Fruits also cannot take cooling type or heaty type. Neutral ones r kiwi, apples, rock melon, berries. Take care n drink more water!

Don't scold me fan jian ok?
But I really envy those who got ms!!

I just told my husband, if I get that, vomit until I want to die I also happy! I am NOT feeling nauseous at all!!

Eh.....better not to have tbh. Puke out everything u eat, bb got no nutrients, u will lose weight n dehydrated, might need to go drip cos we need extra water u know, the yang shui for bb to swim into out tummy.
I'm lucky to lose 400g only. My sis puke all the way until gv birth lose few kg.
But then again for me who had 2 miscarriage, I feel good to puke cos Tt I know the hormones r changing in my body drastically indirectly I know my bb is growing. It's extremely contradicting

Congrats all mummies to be! I found out that I am 6 weeks pregnant with EDD in March. Have been feeling very very tired, hungry but don't really feel like eating. This is my first pregnancy and I'm frankly quite lost. So afraid to tell my employer that I am expecting as well.
Congrats.
I'm also afraid to tell my employer im preggy esp I'm in sales got kpi. Then old ppl say don't tell anyone until after first trim until it's stable I guess.
From 4w onwards, I can't sleep well keep waking up middle of night to pee, keep feeling hungry eat alot.
6w onwards, day all sickness kicks in. Puke everything I eat. Don't like to drink water. Only sweeten drink. Don't feel like eating cos I'm afraid to puke. Will cry when puke. I hope this will b over soon. Prof Han claim 2nd trim will b better....

I also experience morning sickness. I find that when i'm hungry i feel even more sick. Plain water is also too bland and makes me nausea
Yeah me too
When hungry, I puke
When full, I puke
When food not fresh, I puke
When stinky smell, I puke

Was told plain cracker works but I prefer milk w chocolate, famous Amos cookies, coco crunch ‍♀️. I wonder what color will my bb b when pop out....hahahaa

I actually went TCM to tiao with herbs and acupuncture prior to 3rd pregnancy and had a healthy pregnancy. But I always have to see gynae early.

Constipation is normal. U try to take fruits daily to help with tt, esp kiwi- the black seeds help n it is high in folic acid

Hi Abby, I have very bad morning sickness and food aversion. Yakult (plain) and Marie round biscuit do helps me to get over it. Sometimes I blend/juice cold apples with yakult. It helps when you don't feel like eating and constipation.

try drinking a big cup of prune juice before bed time and in the morning when you wake up? When i do this i end up with diarrhoea... so now sticking to just once a day. You still have to drink a lot of water because the prune juice contains an insoluble sugar that draws water into the large intestines to soften the stools. It works the same way as lactulose, a stool softerner you can buy OTC from pharmacies for constipation and is safe for use during pregnancy. But i find the taste of lactulose too sweet and it makes me gag. Prune juice is easier to swallow and keep down. Make sure you buy the ones that's just 100% prune juice with no additional ingredients

Thank you for the positivity! Really need it. And yes it's hard not to worry... i've been thinking about getting a doppler to use at home so that i can check on the heartbeat daily

I have a doppler when i have my #1 becoz i have the same worry as you. Its a challenge to identify the heartbeat before 12 weeks, at first all i found was my own heartbeat hahaa
Now thinking whether to dig it up to listen for #2 since my appt is nearly a month away still.

sadly today's appt showed that the baby stopped growing more than a week ago... and there was no heartbeat. The duphaston didn't help. Prof says most likely a genetic problem is the cause of all my recurrent miscarriages since my second child does have a rare genetic disorder. We will stop trying for another baby... 4 miscarriages back to back over the past one year is too exhausting emotionally

That is really a very detailed explanation! I am just wondering why my gynae quoted me $500 for Oscar and $2000 for Panorama. So much difference in price compared to everyone else. Which is why I am thinking of changing gynae, her charges are so expensive and I cannot afford!! 2 appointments already paid $600+. Anyone else has thoughts about not doing the test? I feel so scared doing the test and if the results are not favourable, but if I do it, will also have a peace of mind. Dilemma!!!

So far I dont have any MS (touch wood) but I dont really have alot of appetite for dinner, only eat about 5 mouths of plain rice and alot of fruits and I am done for dinner. (I think my baby has Night Sickness HAHA) Also, the stomach always feels very bloated and uncomfortable. Keeps burping, farting even though didnt eat alot, think is common cos I read online it is one of the symptoms for pregnancy...No constipation cos keep eating alot of fruits and vegetables plus water. For my water, I could always taste like it is different whenever I go different places. Very weird! Anyone has the same problem?

Sorry to hear that :( Think is impt to see sinseh to tiao the body. Most important is your health now, dont worry too much. The sinseh $Abby recommended I been there before too. He is quite famous! But need to queue as he talks alot and shares alot of knowledge.

woah ur gynae is really expensive!!! my gf did harmony test at mount Alvernia w doc SL GOH was charged about $1100.
Im considering to do harmony test straight away but kkh insist package include oscar test no matter what. It is frustrating speaking to them. I realised alot of young mothers skip the test because the possibility is rather low. Hence u probably want to take this into consideration.
Check out this article. Maybe this can help

My dear pls take care. Take a break and heal... things will turn out good eventually *hugz*

I had an appt at 6 weeks 5 days and saw the yolk sac and heart beat.

I am just very tired n sleepy all the time.

That's normal for pregnancy. Maybe you are the lucky ones who have no MS symptoms. :)
First tri is very worrying. I feel more comfort in 2nd tri when i can feel baby movement.

If you feel weird, you can always go to see your gynae to get it check.

I just went kkh for first trim screen-tt cost $370. Harmony test is $802 tt is because they have lab in the hospital. Hence others tt sent to US will be more expensive. Kkh insist on Oscar test first due to the scanning. I reckon tt is useful in case sometimes blood test shows nothing.

I have read about the false positive about Oscar and due to my age (32, turning 33 soon), I decided to proceed to Panorama straight. However, my gynae recommended to have partial Oscar (NT) + Panorama to get the "most covered" analysis. At first, I thought it might be redundant since Panorama accuracy is much higher than Oscar but after reading what some of the ladies have shared, that some problems can not be detected by Panorama but Oscar, I guess perhaps I should just go ahead?

I did not (forgot) ask the cost though, will call later to double check.

Mine is scheduled on 30/Aug, which by then I will be 11w+6, rightfully, if everything goes well.

I also understand that there will be a detailed scan @ 20w, that might detect and confirm some of the major defects of baby, which I think is (sorta) "another examination" before I can declare/announce my pregnancy, rather than the norm (i.e. after first trimester). Call me kiasu/kiasi or whatever, I just feel rather insecure - probably due to the previous loss last year..

No matter what, I hope all of us here can eventually graduate with flying colors!
