March 2018 Mummies

i'm seeing prof biswas at nuh under private now. And it's not cheap, like what sunflower said. First consultation was $130+ and the scan cost a separate $120+. Duphaston was $75 for 21 days supply... and the package only kicks in at 22 weeks. It costs slightly under 1k for the package which covers the cost of 2 scans. So let's say if one delivers early (choy) the amount paid for the package would be wasted if you've only seen the doc 2-3 times..
Hmm, then are you planning to take the package?
It doesn't seem so worth it to me, esp if doc only sees us every 3 to 4 weeks
I miss the package from my old gynae where its all scans and visits included and he sees me at least once every 3 weeks and at the end every week. Too bad he's not high risk doc

Your old gynae's package is good! My previous deliveries were at kkh private suite and overseas in switzerland; for all 3 kids there were no packages. It's always been pay per visit.

A friend who saw prof mahesh choolani at nuh under private and delivered earlier this year said that she was followed up every 2 weeks until delivery from first consultation... for her case the package was worth it.

we will probably wait and see how the 12 week scan for this baby goes. I was closely monitored for #3 cos of his heart defect and had to do amniocentesis, plus i had early pre term contractions from 24 weeks so my kkh gynae saw me quite often. seeing the doc less is always a good thing! haha

Haha yes I agree. Seeing the doc less frequent is always a good thing. I just got my frequency reduced from 2 weeks to 3 weeks. So we shouldn't be hoping to max out our package uh.

Hope your 12 week scan goes well! I find that while many are excited about gender, I am just praying for healthy babies :)

2angels2016,

my 3 kids were all delivered by different gynaes! So this is effectively my first time with prof biswas too, although he did my d&c in march for the one i miscarried. Given that we've seen quite a number of gynaes; both male and female, in Sg and overseas, Prof biswas is the one whom we feel to be in the safest hands. I wish i'd met him earlier. He took a really careful and detailed history on the first consultation; im sure he will be no less careful with your case.

Hi mamas this is really random but I just saw my gynae and he praised Prof Biswas for being able to take all the complicated cases too!:)

I asked my friends and eventually made an appointment at NUH with Prof Su Li Lin. But her earliest availability is only 16 Oct.. so was advised by her to go see private gynae get confirmation etc n bring report when see her.

Anyone yet to make any doc appt? Better do so quick wor!

16 Oct! for private patient omg... Seems like NUH docs are very popular this yr...

I went to a polyclinic to get referral letter on 26 Jul and my 1st appt is on 14 Sept. haha I also seen a private gynae to get a confirmation on my pregnancy. now waiting for my nuh appt.

Soon soon lo! 1 more mth to ur appt! I'm thinking of going to a private gynae at Clementi to confirm too. Is 7 weeks too early to confirm via scan? Cos the earlier time I went was too early n couldnt detect via scan so doc did V check..

Btw anyone seen this or heard this clinic before?

2angels2016,

very good that your frequency of visits have been lengthened too!

yes this exactly... we are only praying for healthy babies too, have been through too many scares! A lot of my friends think of the screening tests and detailed scan as just the gender reveal. To us it's to check that all the internal organs and body part have formed well and healthy, no issues with the baby. My #3 scared us all the way from first appointment when we were informed that it's a threatened miscarriage cos of the big clot in the uterus all the way until the 12th and 20th week scans when the sonographers all took way too long (about 45min) to scan the baby when other couples were in and out of the room in under 15-20min; to his delivery... he didn't breath and kkh had to call the emergency code blue for him! Now i have nightmares about going back to kkh delivery suite hence we switched to nuh this round plus it's nearer in terms of location.

Fingers tightly crossed for both of us that our babies will be healthy!

Yes, 7 weeks can see doc already. Get a confirmation and also can hear heartbeat. :) But i did the v scan too as doc say its still early to be spotted on the belly scan.

Your #3 must have given you a roller coaster ride.

I pray for a healthy and safe delivery too. I don't bother about gender as well.
Same as you, i think detail scans are important. Doc worried that my "protein S" deficiency might have blood clots, so detail scan is crucial to pick up the blood flow of the umbilical cord and also to check weight if bb is doing ok.
Due to the daily injection which thins my blood by alot, i gotta to plan for induced labour so we know when to stop injection if not i will have problem during natural delivery. Glad my labour was smooth and uneventful.

My #1 is a girl and I'm expecting #2 now. Many would wish I get a boy this time but to be honest, regardless of gender, hubby and I plan to stop at 2. And all we wish is just for baby to be healthy. I don't really care about gender at all. I will be equally happy if I get a 2nd baby girl.

I'm feeling the same concerns and worries coming back again as the date for NT scan and harmony draws nearer. The detailed scan at 20 weeks is scary to me. Sonographer is usually very stern and careful about what they say during scan, and will scan quietly or go over the same areas again and again. Altho my first pregnancy was normal but i was on my toes throughout the 40 weeks coz I have close ones who lost their babies in third trim and honestly it scares me so much, it's my phobia.

sunflower307 even though yours is considered high risk pregnancy the scan is still just 20 and 32 weeks? they don't scan you more often? I think the scan at every appointment is going to be one of the things i'm going to miss about seeing a non-NUH gynae...

3rd trimester loss is so scary!

For the detailed scan for #3 after the sonographer spent a really long time scanning we were told to go out and wait and then called back in again and this time another more senior sonographer was present as well... just to verify and countersign what the first sono had seen. Then we were told to wait further to see the inhouse doctor and then the genetics counsellor. And we had to decide on the spot whether to schedule an amniocentesis due to the scan results. Sonographers won't say anything much.. but i think if they don't call in another sonographer to the room it's a good sign..

No.. they are more interested in my blood report.. which i have to draw blood every month.
My gynae just feel my tummy and told me baby head down!

Hi all , went for 8wks scan - EDD 23 mar 2018 ! So happy ....

Next gynae session I'm going for blood test , I get to choose Btwn Oscar blood test at $300 odds VS Panorama DNA screen $1000odds

Any advise if we should spend so much more for the DNA test ?

Also - any WA group or fb group to add pls ? :)

I feel the same way as you too. Even though this is my 2nd pregnancy too, I still can't stop worrying if the harmony test will be Ok, if the baby is doing ok inside me etc...

Sounds so traumatic.. fingers crossed..all will be fine this time!

Actually at my 13w scan last week, my heart was thumping so hard and I felt like I was awaiting some major life changing exam results. Totally cannot enjoy seeing baby as I was listening out for nasal bone, nt thickness, and the various organs as the doc read out to the nurse. And I also have not gotten my nipt results so I am still on tenderhooks!

I think when I switch to nuh, I will also miss the scans. Always wondering what's going on inside. Wonder if we can request for monthly scans.

Hi all just to share what the doc says today at my random (cos nuh appt earliest at 16 Oct is way too long) appointment at SBCC Women's Clinic at Clementi.

The doc said govt hosp doesn't mean cheaper than private, cos apparently govt hosp has this surcharge which private doesn't have. He highlighted of cos cannot compare with subsidised rates cos actually subsidised is same price just that got someone (govt) pay for u.. n the cons is they usually got v young doctors n u need to go diff places to do scans tests etc.. He said there's nothing wrong abt govt hosp bit advised us to compare prices first don't assume govt private is cheaper.

N we are quite comfortable with his doc cos he's very forthcoming. Gave us confirmed price list despite 1st appt only. N his package $900 starts on 12 weeks.

On a separate note, turned out bb only 6 wks so most probably gonna be a Apr bb rather than Mar..

Yes, I agree. My 1st gynae is cheaper than kkh and nuh private. If the pg is smooth, then private is likely to be cheaper.

But for more complicated or high risk pg, govt is cheaper as the high risk private docs charge a bomb! Now I am paying at least $400 each visit and adding on meds and blood tests, it can go up to almost 1k. My gp also advised govt for high risk pg, as not all gynaes are trained to manage those.

On a side note, this gynae package sounds really cheap if it includes scans!

kodomo yy, wow your gynae's package is really cheap! $900 all the way from 12 weeks until delivery?

agree with 2angels2016 that the gynaes at govt hospitals are more experienced with high risk cases. For us we've always chosen govt cos i know we may need the nicu/special care and kkh/nuh has the best facilities and specialists.

With my #3's delivery when the hospital announced the code blue on the PA system even before the message was finished playing a whole paediatric crash team had already come flying into my delivery suite to attend to the baby. It was literally within seconds and when there's a emergency seconds can make a huge difference. I do not know how fast the private PDs on call in pte hospitals can respond, but having experienced it at first hand, at least i'm reassured that if there's a need, the govt hospitals teams are all very trained to respond very very quickly.

Although nowadays the hair on my arms still stand when we go to kkh for my kids' appointments and I hear "Attention all medical staff. Code green/blue at delivery suite room #". And i'll pray very hard that everything goes well for the mother and baby.

Hi mummies,

may i know how much on average are your gynae consultation costs?

i'm seeing prof biswas at nuh as a private patient and was quite shocked that the consultation alone is $134.82, ultrasound scan is $123.05, and the duphaston $75 for 21 days' supply. Its nearly $330 just for the first visit!

when i had my other kids at kkh private suite the consultation was also around $100+ but it included the ultrasound scan as well

I guess that's e usual rate , for my #1 5 years ago each gynae visit at private doc located at paragon med was $130 + for consultation and scan was about $120 too , I visited KKH Private suite now and consultation plus scan was close to $200 too. My previous have retire and we still looking for a female Gynae that deliver in Mt A.

We have the same EDD! :)

My gynae did not offer me this much option, just oscar test in sep. why the difference if you know?

Oscar is just based on maternal blood test combined with some measurements taken during scan (nuchal translucency the fluid at the neck and length of nasal bone). It is not very accurate and provides you a risk assessment for the various trisomies like Down's Syndrome etc. Sometimes knowing the risk assessment also very hard to decide whether or not baby had trisomy issues. Usually those with high risk results will have to go amnio to confirm diagnosis (amnio is 100% accurate).

Non invasive prenatal testing like Harmony and Panorama test the fetal serum that is available in mothers blood. It is not 100% like an amnio but highly accurate and more accurate than Oscar. However they are costly. They can usually be done as early as 10 weeks and results usually out within 2 weeks.

I was scarred by my Oscar results for first pregnancy. Everything was ok except nasal bone just slightly short and became high risk. The hospital at that time didn't offer Harmony or Panorama and I ended up doing an amnio for peace of mind. Hence this time I decided to just go for Panorama and all results turned out good.

Did the amnio procedure hurt? The procedure itself is quite high risk right?

Oscar scan also determine on how well your bb cooperate with you. I remember i have to scan twice as bb wasn't in a good position for measurement.

i did amnio for #3, it's about as painful as taking blood i guess since it involves poking this super long needle into the tummy without pain relief. there's a risk of miscarriage with the procedure. can't remember exactly though. They will usually give a few days mc to rest at home afterwards

Amnio doesn't really hurt but yes, about what it feels like for a blood draw. Needle is VERY long. There is a risk of miscarriage but mine was done by a very experienced Prof John Tee at KKH so I felt assured. I only had 1 day mc (day of procedure).

Yes Oscar scan also depends on baby's positioning. I had to go in about 4 times with breaks in between as baby was not facing the right way. Took a few hours altogether from the scannong and waiting and scanning again.

mine was done by john tee too... but i remember i had mc for 2-3 days! He was joking around with the nurses right before he did the procedure and after, so i wasn't too impressed by him at that time

Hope you feel better!
I getting super sleepy nowadays haha I knock out at 9plus and just leave #1 with dad...

Omg haha our symptoms seem to run in parallel. These few days after coming home from work, I'm so tired I nap for 2 hours (what kind of a long nap is that lol). My husband also has to run after #1 and #2. Haha practice when another comes along.

I have rashes round my tummy and especially itchy at both side of the tummy. Not sure if this is due to the stretch marks cream I applied. Any mommies develop rashes?

Blood test every month sounds like a nightmare for me. Baby is head down so fast?

Wah #3.. My hub told me a few days ago, that we will just have 2... after his hectic schedule with #1 (bathing, laundry and what nots') coz i am too tired to do anything... wahahhaa
I cannot imagine live with #2 as of now.. and i give thumbs up to families who have more than 2 kids.

You will get use to it... hahaha luckily i don't have a phobia for needles.

Tt for my #1. bb head down since 28wks

Had high fever 39.2 this morning, will it affect my baby (at 10 weeks)? Read that there might be birth defects or miscarriage for high fever in first trimester especially...

Pls see a doctor quickly to diagnose. Usually high fever means body is fighting an infection. While I think babies are quite resilient, mum having prolonged high fever also may not be good for baby.

Went to see doc and took medicine already, but somehow, still quite worried. Only prolonged high fever will affect baby? I think I had fever for a few hours before seeing the doc.

Hi! I just joined here and my EDD is on 26 mar 2018. I just returned from my gynae visit and she mentioned about the oscar and various blood test which she would be discussing with me during the next visit. Can anyone share the estimated costs of such tests, as well as the pros and cons? Thanks in advance!

I had the same problem when I applied the stretch marks cream given to me by the nurse. I have since stopped applying and just bought Bio-Oil to try, but havent started using. I think your skin might not be suitable for the current brand of stretch mark cream! So better stop applying and change to another brand.

My sil has to go hospital as her tummy turns burning red after using them. I totally stop aft and got my usual cocoa butter. Hi ladies, I chose the subsidised route with a referral from a polyclinic to NUH. But my first appointment is when I'm at week 14. Is that too late?

I'm at week 8 now. Should I go to a women's clinic to get a scan first? I'm not sure how things work at a private gynaecologist. It seems like it's all package-based.

Hi Jellynova,
Personally, I think 14th week seem a little late for first visit. Did the doc at polyclinic prescribe any folic acid for you before your first visit to the gynae?
Package at Gynae typically starts from week 20. For some gynaes, packages are optional. You may just like to take a peep at your baby earlier - you would be able to hear his/ her heartbeat already at week 8:) I went for my visit earlier this week and the baby was already very busy moving at week 11.

Hi Shazza05, yes, the doctor prescribed folic acid but nothing else. Looking into fish oil and/or a general multivitamin - I'm really fatigued.

That's a great idea to just go for a scan to check on the heartbeat, cause I can't feel anything at week 8 yet and guess I'm just excited. :)

hihi, no rashes for me but i am having patchy red skin on my face like it's constantly very dry. When I have no makeup on, i always look like i just finished exercising. My mum also commented that my palms and underside of the foot look so reddish these days like all the blood in my body are gushing towards these parts of the body.

I told my hubby I think I'm imploding. o_O

Hello jellynova, I agree with Shazza05. 14th week does sound a little late. Your 1st trimester would have been over by then. It will be good to get yourself an appointment with a private gynae first. You don't have to take on any packages if you don't wish to. The private gynaes will just charge you for consultation + ultrasound + any supplements u take from the clinic. My gynae's package only starts from 14 weeks onwards so any visits before will still be charged as per normal, on per visit basis.
