Heart Mumur

Hi, Just to share some news with everyone, I am 3 months pregnant! The morning sickness and tiredness is so unbearable, but what i want is for my baby to be healthy!!

Any special checkup I need to go for? As you know my first child has ASD? Quite worried!

Hi Smurferoos!

Congratulations! I don't think there's anything else you need to do besides the scheduled ones. Just enjoy your pregnancy! All the best!

Hi QMS,

Thanx. Hopefully everything will turn ok fine.

Hi Smurferoos!

Happy New Year!

How are you getting on? Are you expecting a boy or girl this time? When is the EDD? How's your girl now?

Hi QMS!

Been such a long time since we chat!

Everything is ok, but now i am a stay at home mum! This time round is a boy and i am expecting the baby to be in my arms anytime now!

Hi Smurferoos!

Nice to hear from you! Do keep us updated on your development.

How's your girl getting on? Is she coping well with the idea of being a sister now?

Hi,

My daughter started school. She was ok initially, but now that my son is due anytime, she is crying in school and more clingy, hopefully this phase will pass once my son is out!

I tried to prepare her, but it is difficult! sigh..anyway will keep you guys posted once i deliver.

How are things on your side??

Hi!

Well...please do not expect this phase to pass so soon. It happened to my boy, too. But now, he dotes on his sister very much, and the two of them just love each other, always holding hands whenever they go out! So, you have to be patient with your daughter if she throws her tantrums. Don't lose your cool, ok?

Any improvement on your daughter's condition?

Everything's fine here. The kids are enjoying themselves in the childcare centre.

Hi,

Yeah, i am prepared for the jealousy and tantrums!! i just hope i can keep my cool!

Nope, there is no improvement in my daughter's condition, but as she is still thriving well, so the doc is thinking of doing the procedure either when she is 3.5 or 4 years old! Of cos i am worried!!

So nice to hear that your children are enjoying themselves at the childcare, my daughter was happy in school til now, she started crying again, maybe she is feeling insecure...sigh...

GP detect extra sound on my son heartbeat, he is 2.5mth.... so i guess it is heart murmur.... i duno is it dangerous anot. as gp say it is very mild so not much of a problem.. if got problem shd it be detect when he was born???

Hi!

When the murmur is discovered has no implication on the seriousness of the problem. My son's murmur was only detected when he was 1 month old.

To set your mind at ease, why don't you bring your son to a specialist?

My two cents' worth.

Hi Cherylkjh,

When baby is born, they will all have mumur, most cases, the hole will close by itself then the mumur will go away, else you will need operation to close it when they are bigger.

I agree with QMS, i think maybe you should bring your son to a cardiologist who specialise in children.

Don't worry too much!! Good luck!!

To add on to what Smurferoos said, the murmur need not only arise because a hole exists. It can be due to many, many reasons.

If you think you do not want to bring the baby to a specialist, observe the baby, and see if he has difficulty in breathing, or shows other signs of discomfort.

Many times, it's more to set our minds at ease. So, I would still suggest you bring him to a specialist.

Do keep us updated! Take Care!

Hi hi!

I have just delivered my baby son on sat! Keeping my fingers crossed that everything is fine with him!

I delivered him naturally with epi, he weighs 3.2kg!

Hi,

My daughter quite ok with the didi, so far so good. Now i am breastfeeding, so tiring!!

Yeah since this will be my final child, i have decided to enjoy this time round and be less stressful!

Hi!

Glad that your girl is receptive to the brother.

Did you breastfeed your girl too? Yes, it's indeed tiring, but hang on there. You will realise the benefits eventually. Anyway, the tiring portion is probably just the first month. It will be a bliss thereafter. So, Jia You!

Hi,

She is ok with the brother, but at times she will still break into tears and she has been very senstive lately...

Yep i breastfeed my daugther for 6 months, and i hope to do the same for my son! my son refuse to suck, so he just latch on and suck for a few mins then stop, so most of the time i have to express my milk instead....thanx for your support

hi, is this thread active? Need support as my son has VSD and doc might want surgery in 6 mths (he will be less than 1 yr old). Wonder if it will be too soon.

Hi!

Sorry to hear about your son's condition. Which doctor is he seeing?

Another forumer, Smurferoos, has a daughter with similar condition as your son. Wonder how is her daughter now.

I thought doctors will usually wait till the child is slightly older before they will consideration surgery?

hi QMS i am also worried,
n my boy also has kidney problems so i worry that the op will be soon .... i am seeking 2nd opinion after speaking to one of the mummies. the current doc i m seeing is Dr KY wong.

Hi!

Did you ask Dr. Wong why the urgency? Conditions vary individually, and hence, it may not be that prudent to compare with other patients. Dr. Wong is an experienced doctor, and there should be a sense of urgency for him to decide on having the operation so soon. Why not you discuss with him further?

Which other doctor do you plan to approach?

Thanks QMS - will ask Dr Wong this sat when we see him. I have decided to ask Dr William Yip for 2nd opinion. Just worried cos my bb so small and had to do surgery...but it cld be also his kidneys that is why must do earlier

Hi!

Do you mind sharing what happened to your son's kidneys?

Keep us posted of the development, ok? We are here to support each other. Stay strong.

thanks QMS - my son's both kidneys are dilated, reflux is v high at 4 and 5 - which means medicine cant help, a surgery is needed. Further test show that his right kidney only has 7% functionality, so we need to remove his kidney as well.

Thanks.

Hi!

Perhaps it's to avoid further complications that Dr. Wong suggested having the operation so soon. My son had ASD previously, and whenever we saw Dr. Wong or Dr. Tan (the other consultant in KKH), they suggested waiting till my boy was bigger (at about 15 kg) unless something happened. I suppose they, as medical professionals, knew how traumatic surgeries would be to patients.

In any case, hear what the other doctor says, too, to set your mind at ease.

Again, stay strong. If you need a listening ear, just share your feelings here. We are always available!

Take Care!

hi QMS - ya i tht weight is an issue but my PD say now medical so advanced no need to reach 10kg for op. I know Dr shankar did oop for less than 1kg bb before... but then my son is really small - he is just 5.34kg.

thks for ur listening ear....

Hi Vanilla_pod_2!

How was the consultation with Dr. KY Wong? Did you clarify your doubts with him? Have you seen Dr William Yip?

hi QMS - my bb had his scan with Dr WOng on sat - his 2 big holes (VSD) at the lower chamber appear to have closed (THANK the LORD) and only 1 big one remained (3.5mm). His ASD which is 8.5mm is still there. His band is also tight -- so we were referred to dr Shankar whom we saw ysterday. The 2 docs will speak with my PD as well (since my son also has kidney prob) and most prob the surgery will be done in 1 mth's time. Rather shocking cos very soon but this cant be helped cos his band is tight. GOod ideal wt for surgery is 8kg but my son is just 5.44kg.

Havent seen Dr yip yet -will see him this sat.

Hi!

Glad to hear that his VSDs have rectified on their own. Good news will just follow one after another, so, have hope.

Have you decided to go for the surgery? If you have, is there still a need to seek second opinion? Did Dr Wong mention what sort of surgery will your boy go through? When you said "his band is also tight", what do you mean?

Your boy will grow up to be a strong and healthy boy. I will pray hard for him. Do let us know how he's getting on.

All the best!

hi QMS - thanks. Actually he has ASD and multiple VSD. for his lower chamber he has 3 big holes which 2 seem to have closed. 1 remained but being in the lower chamber it is dif for Dr S to patch it cos of all the muscles. He say he will try if he cant then he will leave it. The open heart surgery is for his ASD (8.5mm) and also take out his band. He did a banding on his pum atery to prevent too much blood to flow thru cos of his holes. Now the band is tight and the blood cld flow backwards and mixed the blue blood with pink blood which is a cardic problem.

We have decided to go for the op - though rather shocked it is so soon - but cant be helped cos his band is tight. We will still seek Dr Yip's opinion to see if his opinion is the same as Dr WOng.

Thanks for ur prayers...will update once i get the firm date for op

hi QMS, thanks. Tom we will see Dr Wong and ask him when best date for surgery, if urgent then 27 April, if can wait then 12 May. saw dr Yip - wasted alot of time and $. Dr wong is still the best in my opinion.

We now trying to get him put on as much weight as possible....

Hi!

Thanks for your update.

Care to share with us your experience with Dr. Yip?

All the best! Do keep us posted!

hi QMS, he wanted to sedate my bb to do echo..something Dr wong does not required us to do...and he kept complaining that we dont sedate bb so v diff for him to scan and we wasting time...that is just the tip of the iceberg...think i keep rest of comments silent....

Hi vanilla pod 2,

I hope your bb is fine.

I would like to share that I was born with a heart murmur too. Imagine the medical expertise 30 years ago and 30 years now. Be positive! I didn't have to go for op to close the hole. But I do have my fair share of downs during my younger days.

I had asthma, and every month in the middle of the nite my father had to carry me on his back and admit me to TTSH to breathe oxygen. I'm always blusish and I would feel faint easily. I remembered I passed out in the toilet once. My mum barred me from locking the toilet door after that incident. Dental treatments could only be done at SGH.

I did a final scan bout 10 years ago with my doc (he was the same doc who delivered me!) to confirm my condition. He said I'm fully recovered. The only thing that says I had heart murmur was the "double" closing sound heard on a stethoscope.

All the best! The medical expertise is so much better than the past. Have faith!

hi QMS - he is ok, did his open heart surgery on 13 May in the afternoon. was in ICU for 2 nights and transfered to normal ward. Discharged on 18 May. Lost a few skills during operation time, slowly trying to retrain him back. Thanks for ur concern!

Hi Vanilla pod 2,
My son is diagnose with VSD of 9.8mm. He is only 6 wks+. May I know your doc KY Wong is fm where??
So you find Dr Yip no good?
What abt Dr Shankar? Did you ever tot of consulting him back then??

Hi QMS,
I think KY Wong (Head of Cardiac) don't do surgery?
It is done by Dr Ong Kim Kiat (head of cardiac surgical)at KKH?
Is he good.

Dr Shankar has left KKH.

Hi Happytots!

Not sure whether Dr KY Wong operates or not. From the discussions above, it does seem that Dr KY Wong performs surgery. Perhaps vanilla pod 2 is in a better position to answer your query? My son used to be seen by either Dr KY Wong or Dr Tan TH.

In fact, my son was one month old when he was diagnosed with ASD. Why don't you consult Dr. KY Wong first and see what he says? Vanilla pod 2's son needs to go through surgery at such a tender age because of the other health conditions. The doctor will be able to advise you on the best course of action after seeing your son.

Take Care!

Hi QMS,

Thanks. We are seeing KKH surgeon 2mr, but not KY Wong leh? That why I tot he does not operate.
Very heavy heart. Shd I seek a 2nd opinion??

Are u a SAHM?? You reply at 4:45 fm home or office??

Guess with my son condition, I would hv to resign and stay at home as well.

My husband will be a bit naggy as all household expenses will be on him. We hv 3 kids.
What abt you??

Hi Happytots!

Are you sure the doctor you will be seeing tomorrow is a surgeon? Is this your son's first consultation? If so, does he need a surgery now to warrant seeing a surgeon?

This is what I obtained from the KKH website:

1. Cardiology

The Paediatric Cardiology Service is the main paediatric cardiology referral centre in Singapore.

The Service provides comprehensive care for congenital and acquired heart problems from the neonate to the young adult.

The diagnostic modalities include electrocardiogram, 2-dimensional echocardiography including fetal and transesophageal echocardiogram, and cineangiography.

Catheter based interventions include dilatation of heart valves and narrowed vessels; and closure of cardiac shunts like patent ductus arteriosus and atrial septal defects.

2. Cardiothoracic Surgery

We provide complete cover for all elective and emergency cardiothoracic surgeries in neonates, infants and children. Total surgeries average over 200 a year.

Range of Services:

a. Elective and emergency cardio-thoracic surgery for conditions in infants, children and adolescents up to 18 years of age
b. In-patient care of children needing cardio-thoracic surgery or surgical review
c. Out-patient pre- and post-operative assessment and follow-up care

Does your son have other medical conditions besides VSD? Does he appear to be having breathing difficulties?

If the doctor's recommendation is to wait for your son to grow before going through the operation, the best thing for you, as a parent, is to treat your son normally. If he doesn't have other medical conditions, there is actually no need for you to change your lifestyle.

Who is looking after the two elder kids?

I am a FTWM. Have 2 kids.

Please let me know how the consultation with the doctor goes.

Good Luck and Take Care!

hi Mummies

I would like to join in the thread too as my son as born with TGA (Transposition of Great Arteris) & ASD..This is a rare case in Singapore. He went for arterial switch prodcedure which is an open heart surgery at his 5th day of life done by Dr Shankar & the cardio in charge is also Dr KY Wong at KKH.

My son who is 8 mths old now is a healthy boy & will need to go review with Dr Wong every 6th mths. He will need antibiotics too if he wants to extract his teeth in future..Went for review last mth that he still has this heart murmur which Dr Wong says that it is expected after this surgery was done...

Am great to see this thread here as we mummies whose kids has heart problem can give each other encouragement here. Till now, I will still cry when I think back of all the tubes popping on my son then.....Now he is my precious little boy...

Hi Kate!

Welcome on board! It is always good to have mummies sharing experiences with all forummers. We exchange views and we learn from each other.

Do you mind sharing with us what is TGA? Was his ASD fixed when he went through the operation, too?

Our children are gifts to us. Now that your boy is recovering, don't think too much at the past.

Hi QMS

TGA is where the aorta and pulmonary artery are reversed. The aorta receives the oxygen-poor blood from the right ventricle, but it's carried back to the body without receiving more oxygen. Likewise, the pulmonary artery receives the oxygen-rich blood from the left ventricle but carries it back to the lungs, more info can be found here.... (http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=11074) This means to say his blood flows in wrong direction & requires an open heart op to switch both the arteries back. This is a major op & it took almost a day. Yes, his ASD is fixed as well during the op.. He was borned in TMC & was immediately transferred to KKH after being diagnosed with TGA..

I still remember that period was hetic & scary, imagine I cannot go home with my baby. ...I was then in confinement & travelled to KKH to see my son & transport my breastmilk to him everyday...

He was in ICU for 2 wks & then transferred to normal ward for 1 wk & luckily I had support from my family, friends & hubby else I sure will go into post-natal depression...Of cos, have gd doctors as well with recommendation from TMC

Ya, wont think too much of the past, especially seeing his development progressing well now...

Hi Kate!

It's a good thing that your son's conditions were discovered and rectified early, and now he's on the road to recovery. If you don't mind sharing, can you please advise how was his TGA discovered?

What is your boy's weight now? Besides requiring antibiotics before he goes for any teeth extraction, does he need to be on long term medication? Information from the link you gave seemed to indicate that a life-long monitoring, and possibly another surgery, is required. I may have interpreted it wrongly, though. The website didn't say anything about the cause of this condition. Tried searching through the web, but couldn't find anything on the cause. Did the doctor mention anything? Or is it like ASD, where the cause is unknown?

It's your good fortune that you have so many people behind you during those tough days. You have also been very strong and persistent in giving your son the best. It's not easy to travel between home and the hospital during confinement, and transporting breastmilk at the same time. By the way, are you still breastfeeding your son?

Your son is a fortunate boy. Things will only get better for him.

hi happytots - sorry for my late reply.

Dr KY WOng is still in KK. He is the cardiologist and for my son he did not perform in the surgery as the surgeron is Dr Shankar. But i know another child who will be putting a device in her heart - the putting in of device is done by Dr WOng but the cutting up is done by Dr KK ong (both in KKH0

Dr Shankar is now in NUH.

I see Dr Wong at his Mt E clinic (private) and Dr SHankar at GlenE (private).

From what i gathered from PDs (frens and my own)..Dr Wong is no 1 in his field.

I went to Dr yip as a second opinion before my son's opearation. He is v exp and bedside manners is VERY lacking. I regretted seeing him cos he scolded me for not sedating my son for the echo which is ridiculous as Dr Wong never needs to sedate my son. Dr Yip's Q is so long that my son woke up from his sedation and need another dose. That caused my hb to really flare up.

u dun really have to resign to be a SAHM for ur son. I am working and my son's heart condition was more complicated. He had swiss cheese condition. A big ASD, a big VSD and lots of muscular vsds. after his operation on 13 May, he is now blessed by God in recovering well and like what Dr Shankar say - let him have his normal childhood and be a kid.

My bb was diagnosed with his heart condition when he is 5 days old when he is in NICU recovering from his other operation. He also had kidney problems and hence this heart surgery was more tricky cos we worry abt his kidney (which Dr yip scared the wits out of me by saying there is a chance of kidney failure and hence dialysis). Dr Wong say chances low if surgery is fast. His surgery was done in 3 hrs time.

How is ur son's checkup at KKH?

Hi kate - yes there is a time i thot i cld not survive all these..but amazing my son's 2nd surgery i did not tear at all at ICU seeing him w all teh tubes. the nurses knew i was there before when my son is 1week old and cld understand how to read the mointor and i was helping them w bb. But we have to say our bbs are such fighters and strong warriors!
