Down syndrome

Hello,

Many points you raise is very valid, i wish more parent think as deeply as you. Having said that having baby is a personal choice the individual couple need to decide for themselve. Outsider inclusive of their daddy, mummy, relative, kpo friends, opinion leaders, doctor, scientist are all irrelevant. Because each set of parent will need to think hard and decide for themselve whether do they want a child with "Down" sydrome. Afterall, none of the above listed folks will be bearing the full responsibility of raising the child.

Cheers

And I am still thinking

And I am still wondering

As I go through the various stages of grief

Safest for you emotionally and physically and also at least you made the choice after informed decision with proper evidence . I think you are the only one who can make that decision whether to keep or not..for me I won't keep the baby coz I feel it's a burden for him to endure (poor physical/ mental health etc) but I know of my friends who just skip the first trimester screen as they will keep the baby no matter what .. All the best

Thank you.

Yes, that is why IF it is confirmed that it is not just DS put DS with complications, I would opt for abortion. But WHAT IF, Doctor says the complications are minor and repairable? Doctors these days like to throw the question back to the patient.

I am confused.

As a society I think we are better able to accept someone with DS.

Personally the main question would be whether your hubby and you would be able to accept and care for such a baby. The amount of time, effort, blood, sweat and tears, plus the emotions (the highs and possibly the many lows). If you can accept the 'costs' that comes with the 'benefits' of nurturing a DS baby, then yes you may consider going through with it.

It probably wont be good to bring a DS baby to the world if no one is there to care for him/her. It may be better to deal with the pains of terminating the pregnancy rather than bringing him/her to the world.. That would be truly tragic.

Good luck!

Thank you for the luck. We need loads of it!

Yes, the immediate challenge is that I am more able to accept to keep the child and care for him than DH and 24W is coming up and we have to decide.

Regarding bringing the DS child up, I believe that the local support like DSA and Rainbow Centre would do their best. Society we will see.

With technology, learning could be online and tapping on USA/EUR schools. Maybe home school but the DS must be healthy.

If our complications are not repairable, whatever thoughts these few weeks would be an exercise of self discovery.

I think it is not easy to have such a clear cut decision to make. Life doesnt work like that..

Perhaps your decision matrix should be whether to keep your baby if he/she is a DS baby regardless of health? It could well be that there are other issues to consider too that cant be detected now.

The matrix was that straightforward before any screening.

After the screening, readings and scans, it is not so straightforward.

Search a bit and you will find that especially in western countries healthy DS people who lead regular lives exist.

I found only 1 has a Doctorate, 1 is a body builder champ, 1 is a model and others play football, rugby, swim, etc. and the rest hidden at home? Because the level of mental impairment is unknown for ANY child till 2 years old.

If you were given S$5mio based on current times to keep a DS child, would you?

If you were told this is the ONLY child you will have, would you abort?

If you are told, apart from an extra chromosome, the baby is healthy, will live till 50 and earn his 1st US$1mio as a inspirational speaker at 18, would you abort?

Lost still.

Hello,

Frankly speaking, i hope you are not wondering & thinking & griefing alone ya. Your hubby should share this equally with you. Thereafter should jointly make the final decision. Sorry to say that "This is to prevent finger pointing after whatever the decision is finally decided upon"

Hello,

You are totally correct that after screening result is out, it become not so straightforward, how irony ya, we pay so much to do all these screening is to aids us to make the "GO" or "NO GO" decision.

Frankly speaking, hope i am not being excessively rude & insensitive, all the other points are not going to help both of you make the final decision beco, no one can assure to that if you give birth, your bb will become successful, famous etc. No one is going to give you $5m and no way you are going to know that this is the only bb you will ever have etc etc etc

We live in a not prefect world and everyday we are made decision base on incomplete and often inaccurate data. Yet we still sit down to study all the information and resource we have on hand carefully and finally make a decision that at that point in time seems to be the best decision. This is sad but true.

If both of you as a couple is pessimistic ppl, then i suggest you make a decision base on the worst case secenairo, however if both of you are optimistic ppl, then make the final decision base on the best case scenario.

Dun be surprise, that the final decision after you run thru both the best & worst case scenairo might turn out to be the same decision.

All the best.

I would agree to decide based on a worst case scenario cause you may not be ready even if it were to be a best case scenario for a DS baby, i.e. healthy DB baby.

Challenge at this juncture 1 is optimistic and the other is pessimistic.

We both did not realise what impact a SCREENING would have till we got the results and asked if it was definite and the 1% false +ve aka HOPE was presented.

The scenarios are just to provoke some serious thoughts on abortion. In Ohia, abortion following a screening is just outlawed I read.

There was a local couple who did crowd funding to help bring their child to Boston Children's Hospital for treatment.

If crowd funding supported the birth, at least the financial aspect is taken care of. The best in life experiences, education and medical treatment may be given. Maybe both full time parents and help other DS too?

But of course, it should not be the society that is asked to bring up the child since it is the parents who ultimately come to a decision as the 24w approaches.

When is a parent really ready for a child? We cannot predict the future and a healthy child born will still present challenges and develop at differing levels to another.

Exactly. Even a healthy child born will present different challenges. Personally I always plan for the worst and treat the best or middle case scenarios as much welcome bonuses.

I guess that's something you really would have to work out with your hubby and yourself on how ready you both are.

Hi Mummies,
I went for oscar test and my results was very bad. Gynae advise us to go for amnio and heart scan for bb which we decided to go ahead. However, we need to wait for at after 14 weeks then can do the test. Me and my husband was very worried.

I understand how you feel.

In the past, during most of our parents time, there was less of such screening done. Now, a blur crystal ball is given which jut leads to days and weeks of worry and anticipation.

All the best!

Hello, you are totally correct. raising children is parent sole responsible, it is afterall their personal & private decision to have kid in the first place. Frankly speaking, do you really care what happen in Ohio?

If your hubby & yourself focus on the things that is within your control, and ignore all the "noise" aka things that are beyond your direct control. The "logical & rational" decision i believe will be very very obvious, then come the greater challenge to decide whether or not to follow thru with the decision because emotions will kicks in and sometime make ppl make totally irrational decision. Having said that, irrational decision need not be 100% bad.

imho, your hubby/partner and yourself have sufficient information to process and thereafter make a final decision. Any other mummy or daddy opinion/view/advice telling you to keep or abort is irrelevant because none of us know your family situation 100% and even if we do know, none will be responsible for the final decision. (I do apologies in advance to you if i speak too bluntly, i want you to know that i mean well for your whole family & i truly wish your family life great joy, peace & most importantly best of health)

Jia you mummy

hi mummies, much appreciate your opinions.

Just got back oscar results 1:363 (borderline risk), will you choose to go for further tests like harmony or panorama if you are in my situation? Doctor said scan is ok, probably my age & blood biochem contributed to the result. i am 38, turning 39 this year & first time mum.

Enjoy your pregnancy. Listen to the doctor.

There are other scans and tests to take on this journey

Hello,

One question your hubby & yourself should consider before spending on such costly test (at least $800). The question IS, if the test say high risk, will you be willing to consider going for abortion, if the answer that both of you jointly arrived at is a big fat NO, then i think you should save the $$$.

Another question to ask is whether you are willing to accept a 99% accuracy result that Harmony & paranoma is claiming to give, are both of you the type that must have 100% accuracy result before you will take a decision. If you are must know 100% type of parent, then i suggest you skip the paranoma test if $$$ is a challenge and jump straight into aminotest instead. Do note that amino test cost over $1,000, give 100% accuracy but carry a small risk of Miscarriage.

If you are the type of parent that cannot even accept a tiny risk of Miscarriage, then you should go for paranoma test and accept the fact that it is 99% accurate. (Paranoma test is 0% risk de, since it is just draw blood and send to a lab in USA to test)

All the best. Jia you

Yup, we went straight to harmony(panorama) etc. 1.2k. Results good. Low risk. My friend went Oscar, false results. N suggest go straight harmony

thank you PositiveLi, aaa111 & Phantom for your opinions.

we decided not to go for further test & have faith that everything will turn up alright for our little one :)

Hello,

Glad your family have made up your mind on the next course of action. Good good.

The next thing you can consider looking into is insurance policy for both mummy & the unborn baby. For mummy is to cover some of the complication as for the baby, it is to give him/her some insurance policy coverage in the event that the baby condition turn out to be not so good. baby who do not have good health condition typically will not be able to find any insurance company who will be willing to sell any policy to them.

Aaa111, can you advise what policy???

Hello. i am not in good position to advice beco i am not an insurance agent and also have not bought any of such policy before. I highly reccommend you speak to your preferred insurance consultant. I think such specialise maternity policy in the market got less then 5 and mostly the bigger player might have 1 such policy each. It is good to scout around to find a policy coverage and cost that meet your family needs best.

All the best

I have friends who have borderline results and baby turn out fine. All of them are above 35 yo so they have a higher chance of getting less positive results since Oscar is a statistical test.
In any case, one can have a happy family life even if you have a DS child.

RE insurance, the premium is a bit high for the payout. May not be worth it if you already have some other insurance.

RE families with kids with DS, it is a difficult debate just like babies being aborted because of the sex. Singapore children what with influx of new citizens with varied cultural and educational backgrounds may just be more acceptable to children with special needs. Or less.

Congrats Carebear on the good result. Amnio is suppose to be 100% accurate. If you pass mean should be all is well especially gynae also say nothing to worry about. You can finally sleep peacefully le. Happy for you. :)
Sighz... one thing after another! I didn't pass the glucose tolerance test and now gotta go back again to do the glucose test in a week's time and then follow strict dietary and have to prick fingers etc etc... that makes me kinda depress

doc ask parents my wife whether any diabetic-family. My mil have slightly. hence we have to undergo test too. :(
anywayz, you said got strict diet to follow, so u should be fine

I did this GTT (for gestational diabetes) at 20weeks. I have no family history of that but because of my age, I was encouraged to do it.

Hello, sorry to hear that. Hope it is not too serious ya. Jia you. Finishing line in sight le

Hi all

I just did my NT scan for my twins yesterday at KKH. The results for 1 of the twin was positive at 1:249. NT was 3.1mm. Blood test seems fine. I'm 35 this year and I'm really worried.

KKH suggested Amnio for next step cos Harmony will not be accurate for twins as the results may be affected by the good twin.

I heard that Dr Ananda from Camden is good at detailed scanning and may be able to give a more accurate result. Thinking if I should see him. However, if results from him is still not conclusive, we will still have to go for Amnio.

Anyone done Amnio in KKH before for twin pregnancy and know of any good doctor to recommend? It carries a MC risk so would prefer an experienced doctor if we need to go thru that.

Hi

Regardless of the diagnostics, will you bring both to full term?

Amnio is normally done by a very senior and experienced doctor at KKH. Just make sure you confirm that to set your mind at ease before the procedure.

Have faith without seeking Dr Ananda and go for amnio if down syndrome must be determined with view to terminate. Else enjoy till 20 week scan since everything else is smooth.

Money, time and worry saved may be a good thing.

If your DH and you want every bit of information, seeking a 2nd opinion is harmless.

Dr Ananda scan can never be consider as conclusive in anyway, the reason is because it is afterall just another ultrasound scan only, even though he is suppose to be very good at it. If you must have a conclusive result before making the decision, the only option you have is amino test, it cost over $1,000 in KKH for private patient. I am glad that you are aware of the tiny MC risk involve for the amino test, then the next thing your hubby & you can decide before going for the test is that, if the result is no good, does it means you want to terminate it, if the answer is a big fat NO, then seriously you should consider to skip all these expensive test.

All the best mummy. jia you.

Actually, researchers did what they did with NIPT to allow parents to have more time and information to say register for special needs infant care and prep family, speak to parents with special needs children and Down Syndrome Association for example. This is a fetus with an extra chromosome 21.

Would it be different if a test says everything else like heart, lungs and lumps is normal?

We decided we had to abort after problems were found in the heart and other non-medical considerations.

Good info from Aussie https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/conditionsandtreatments/down-syndrome

Such tests usu nt very accurate.many of my frens actually opted out of such tests cos they felt it wld put undue stress on themselves. My sis has a fren whom showed super high risk for down syndrome but they went ahead to give birth n bb was very healthy. Be positive. Take care!

Most of us (me included), really are too happy with getting pregnant that when asked to go for this SCREENING test or that, we do not realise the implications.

I assumed it was just standard protocol to go for the latest SCREENING suggested by the Dr.

When the SCREENING results came back, I scrambled to get more information of what the results meant and we debated the ethical, moral, social, financial, support, short and long term implications.

I dug deep and found that I could accept an extra chromosome that is healthy with no major heart and lung issues. Everything else is not certain.

Yet at 16W, heart and lungs indicators/markers were not good, I feared complications in 3rd trimester with a similar outcome.

Coupled with my other half who could only accept a 1st child with normal chromosome, we agreed on our next courses of action.

Doctors do not support termination on SCREENING even with NT Ultrsound Scan. So no choice, need to do amnio at 16W for the diagnostics results and accept that very minor miscarriage risk.

Unfortunately, statistical results applied to us and we had to correct our mindset and accept that we had to go through a MTPT.

In consolation, we can ovulate soon after a MTPT before AF and get back on the journey biologically.

Emotionally and psychologically, it will take time and depend on individuals though.

Dortor recommend for AF to regulate for 2 months before trying.

Has anyone been really successful with a healthy child soon after MTPT? Drs., do not have statistics for this.

In my next pregnancy, I will enjoy the experience cautiously and skip SCREENING since the only action from SCREENING like PANORAMA is just WORRY and enjoy till amniocentisis week.

But if by then, my eggs are depleted and a child regardless down or not (cause there are so many other anomalies where no screening is available), is important, will I opt out of PANORAMA and just do regular 20 weeks scan after belly has grown, fetus grown more and kicking felt?

I do not know the future. It seems each visit is a gamble.

To answer that question, yes I know of someone who did MTPT due to similar issue and now her next baby is healthy and happy. Keep the faith. God has his ways.

Hello, happy that your hubby & yourself have sit down to discuss and jointly find a path forward. Jia you. Take good care of yourself, eat well, sleep more, we believe with you that the amino test result will be a good one.

Take care

Hi,

the Lien Foundation, which advocates for the special needs community, is inviting parents of special needs children to share their views on how to make Singapore a more inclusive society.

The survey is open for 2 weeks and ends on April 14. The findings will be shared with the media in mid-2016, to hopefully spark a deeper public conversation about this issue that is important to all of us.

If you would like to contribute your views, pls visit http://bit.do/Inclusive.

Thanks!

Hi,

Just want to share my experience. I went through oscar test with bad results and had to go through further tests like heart and amnio test for baby. All turn out well. So dont be discourage about bad results and I believe next time I won't choose to go for such test again and either wait for detailed scan or choose for harmony test instead. Wish all Mummies here well.

Hi I'm here to lend a listening ear.
I just gotten my OSCARS result today from my gynae and my risk for DS is 1:40. This is my second pregnancy and I'm 26 this year. Me and my hubby decided to go ahead with the CVS test as the result will determine whether we will continue this pregnancy anot.
Right now I feel like my world is crashing down.

Hello, I believe you are aware that there is a tiny risk of MC when undergoing the CVS test. The good thing of this test is that the result is 100% accurate. If you are worried about the tiny risk, maybe can consider to do the paranoma/ Harmony test first. It is suppose to be 99% accurate and have zero risk because it is a blood test. But since it is only 99% accurate, if this accuracy level is still not good enough for your family to make a final decision, then will still need to do the CVS test to confirm.

I am glad that you are making this decision along with your hubby. This is very important beco the baby belong to both of you equally and therefore should jointly decide the course of action.

Jia you.

Hi aaa111,

Thank you for the information. Yes my gynae did let me know there is a 1:100 risk in CVS for miscarriages, but we agreed that we need the results to really put our minds at ease/ decide on the next course of action. My CVS is scheduled Tmr and results will be out on Friday. I'm trying so hard not to get anxiety whenever I think of the waiting time.

Babe jiayou!! All the best.

Updates..
I just got my results for the preliminary 'big 3' and it's all ruled out !!! I'm having a healthy baby girl :) The waiting period for result has been a hellish time for us but nonetheless, the CVS gave us a good direction on where to go on this pregnancy. My advise would be, if you decided to go ahead with cvs, find an experienced doctor to carry out the procedure and get lots of rest afterwards.
Good luck to all the mummies here and whatever decision you come to, remember that you are not alone.

All the best.
