Hi there, i’ve just went for my 20th week detailed scan and radiologist discovered my baby girl has ARSA too. My gyne suggested that i should go for amnio but i’m not sure whether if i should for it or not. I didn’t test for any DS cause i’m only 26 and no family history of DS. So another opt is to go for the harmony bloof test. For a peace of mind. For those mummy who have experienced this..Mind sharing ur experience..

It better for u to go straight to amino for peace of mind. If touchwood harmony is positive, u still need to go for amino. (Waste time and money again)

Hi, my baby also has ARSA detected at 20 week detailed scan and was also recommended by the gyne to do amino and we did not do it as there is a chance of miscarriage and now my boy is a healthy and bubbly 9 month old like any other normal kid. Do not worry so much. :)

Hi MkJy!

Can you share with me more of ur experience? Like any complications after birth? Do they monitor your baby?

Hi MkJy!

I didnt have any complications after birth, they did a check on my baby after birth and everything is normal. And ARSA doesnt affect the baby growth. The doctor told us just treat him as a normal boy. Dont worry so much

Just saw your post. It happened to me too. I’m expecting twins and during 20w scan, sonographer detected ARSA on one twin. Told me about linkage to DS. I was so worried and teared up. The on duty dr at kkh told me about the risks and asked me go counseling and do amnio the only option. If terminate 1 twin, the other twin may not survive too. If decide to terminate pregnancy I have to do so before 24w by law. Seen my gynae after that as was advised to do amnio as blood test is not 100% accurate.

So next day I called up many private gynae to book slot for second opinion. Went to one at Camden. Paid a hefty sum for another detailed scan.

After discussion with hub, we decided to go ahead with amnio to have a peace of mind. Opted for express result and for assurance that twin A has no DS. Phew really a sigh of relief after weeks of worrying and stress.

Well it all depends on what u want to know. Can u live with it without knowing the truth? What will u do if result is undesirable?

Hi imkfanatic, sorry for the late reply. I did my harmony test but the test failed my gentic counselling told me that baby DNA is not enough on my blood. I was really devastated my hubby told me not to think to much as we will still keep the baby despite if she have DS or not.. how old are your twins now?

Hi my pertained scan detected ARSA too. Gynae told me the same thing to test for DS. But I didn't as the percentage risk of miscarriage is higher than the percentage risk of DS in ARSA babies. So that didn't make sense to my husband and I. My babygirl was born with no complications and the PD didn't highlight any issues with us. She's 2 months old now. However I must mention that she keeps throwing up after her feed. My Gynae did highlight that the worst case scenario is poor digestion. She has a bit of regurgitation some days. But sometimes she will just purge like Merlion. Daily min 3times. But her weight gain is not optimal.. Very2 low percentile.. ); so that's just something I wanted to share. She's exclusively breastfed as advised by my dr.

Dear pluginbaby2,
Thanks tor sharing your experience. Very much appreciated .. I’ve tried google abt ARSA but there wasn’t much information. May i know does your daughter have problem with breastfeeding? Like choking or so?

Hey.. No worries at all glad to share. She doesn't have any problems breastfeeding. Sometimes it just sounds like she's gasping when my flow is too fast.. So I will unlatch no matter how unhappy she gets to burp her.. Then I continue bfeeding again. It kinda works sometimes but daily there will def be episodes where she will vomit. So I feed on demand cause I can't be sure what's her intake like. She was born 3.2kg. Now she's barely hit 5kg n she's 2.5months.

hi there, my baby has arsa (discovered during first trimester screening @ 12 wks) too and so there's higher risk of DS..we decided to go for amnio but that's only in another 2 weeks (as can only be done earliest 16wks) but the results take another 2 weeks after amnio...it's the waiting is killing us too ;( and we can only hope baby has no down's and is normal.. stay strong shona! I'm trying to tell myself that we need stay positive, so our baby can feel it and be healthy!

hi there, i hope everything will be ok, u can go for harmony also, anyways, in which hospital u r going?did you do the NT scan test too?

yeah, but harmony not so sensitive for DS while amnio can give a definite yes or no for trisomy 21- so we decided to go for that. I'm at kkh...NT scan was ok, just that my hcg was quite high...Dr mentioned that the arsa increased my risk factor but didn't rely mentioned abt e hcg level (though after I googled I m also quite concerned)

how abt yourself which hospital you at?

i am also going in kkh, ya amnio is good but it has1:300 risk of miscarriage , i am sure u r aware , i hope everything goes well, what number did they gave you for the risk of DS?

yeah, we considered the risk...my risk is 1 in 100 (didn't seem too bad but comparatively to the norm its quite high), initially with the blood test it was 1 in 2000 (but the Dr mentioned with ARSA seen on the scan, it dropped to 1 in 100)...hard to find anything very much online about arsa- aside from it happening in 1 to 2% of normal population...hope everything goes well for your harmony test too...

Hi Ariagg, did you proceed to do the amnio? I also detect my first baby girl with ARSA in 20 weeks scanning. I really worried and cry whole night why this will happen to me. I also scared of pain in doing the amnio.

Hi Guys,

Did everyone do harmony test just to confirm they are low risk only when your baby is detect either ARSA? Or did you all proceed do the amnio? Is Amnio painful and really have risk?

Hi there,
I was at same condition at first but now am coping fine and enjoying my pregnancy. The fact is that everyone gets a pregnancy scare at their 20th weeks ultrasound .(at least most of them) The good/bad thing about this US is that it happens to notice even the tiniest things in babies which most of the babies born without even knowing.Even my gyno told me it’s not a big problem & most of the babies comes out fine.
Now coming to the point. We didn’t go for amnio.I did my 12-14 weeks blood test for Down syndrome and it was negative. If baby’s defect is only ARSA then you shouldn’t be worried too much on top of that if your blood test came out negative as well.Just enjoy your pregnancy and have faith. Will pray for you

Is the amnio test painful and also risky to do? Worried on the percentage of miscarriage

Hi, may I ask if your son had any feeding issues?

Hi I had my detailed scan for Down syndrome at my 12th week and suspected to have ARSA which is a syndrome for DiGeorge. At 15th week, it was confirmed that I have ARSA. FTS blood test is all normal and at low % of 1:5600. But with the presence of ARSA, my overall risk % increase to 1:280 . Now I am considering to go for the Amnio Test. Does anyone undergo the ammio test after found to have ARSA and how was the test result? #worriedMum

Hi I also went for amnio test recently and result came back is a normal baby. Although it has ARSA which doctor only advise me during my week 20 scan, but doctor say will not affect the baby. So not to worry too much. Just be brave to go for the test and positive mindset that your baby is alright.

Managed to buy from AIA

Many insurance rejected but AIA accepted with exclusion

hihi, many thanks for advise. Do you mind to share more what insurance have you buy from AIA for ARSA baby? Hospitalization plan? What document do they need? Medical report or Doctor letter will good enough? Greatly appreciate your reply. Thanks thanks.

Hospitalisation plan, discharge letter from specialist and a specialist memo on the prognosis

hello, which specialist did you see, don't mind sharing?

i've been to a few PDs but they appear unfamiliar with ARSA
Dr Ng Moi Pen @ MP Ng Paediatric & Cardiology Clinic Pte Ltd Paediatric Medicine (Child) #11-03 Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre, 3 Mount Elizabeth, Singapore 228510.

ARSA.. according to medical research, it is a very common variant and consider to be normal if no other conditions.

3 in 200 adults today are walking around and living among us healthy..

Do not worry too much. Take care!

Hi everyone, saw this forum related to ARSA and wanted to get more info on this. Just did our 20 week scan and was informed that baby has ARSA which is increases the risk of DS and other genetic disorders. Doctor recommend us to do amniocentesis and we are currently waiting for the test results anxiously. We would like to see if anyone who had similar experiences where the amnio results were all good and baby is growing well and healthy. Any issues faced after baby was born and how should we prepare for it? Should we see a cardiologist for follow ups? What should we take note after baby is born? Any advises are welcome, much appreciated!
