surgery performed on a 20-wk old fetus in the US, back in 1999, to correct fetus' spina bifida problem. It involved performing a C-section, removing the uterus and placing it on the mother's belly. Amniotic fluid was withdrawn, the baby was maneuvered into a position where the back area is accessible, and a tiny incision was made into the uterus. At that point, specially made micro tools were used to pull flaps of skin over the spinal cord, and sutures smaller than a human hair were then used to close the flaps together. After that, the uterus was put back in place, and the incision is sewn up and the amniotic fluid replaced.
At the end of the procedure, just as the uterus was being placed back in the mother’s stomach, an amazing thing happened. A tiny arm thrust itself through the incision and grasped the surgeon’s finger! This account was according to the photographer. According to the surgeon, the fetus was anesthetized and not aware of what was going on – it was the surgeon pulling the fetus’ hand out of the uterus
