(2010/07) July 2010 MTB

Pillow: Ya lor.. i was also thinking how to BF correctly.. so many ppl told me they gave up cos it was painful and they even bled.

i read some articles that when we BF, shld offer one breast 1st & before offering the 2nd breast, need to express out some? why is that so? to let the bb get the hindmilk from the 2nd breast?

springleaf,

happy delivery! since you know when you're popping, now's the time to eat and do whatever you like [IMG=http://www.singaporemotherhood.com/forumboard/clipart/happy.gif]

yup carol, my gynae also told me the same thing. bb head will engaged about 10 days before delivery and some engaged at the point when u are gg into labour..

last visit, gynae checked me, told me bb's head is down and im good to go for natural. [IMG=http://www.singaporemotherhood.com/forumboard/clipart/happy.gif]

sweetkiss,

i thot should try to let baby empty 1 breast before offering the other one? so that baby gets the hindmilk. if keeps switching, then baby gets only foremilk. but if i remember correctly, Mrs Wong said to change breast after feeding 15 mins

ica: yup.. what i meant was after bb has emptied one breast, u mite want to offer the second breast.. so i read that before u switch to the second breast u shld express out some first loh.. dunno why..

ica, thats right. feed the bb till bb let go by themselves feeling all relaxed. if the bb still want milk, offer the other side. foremilk only quenches bb's thirst but not giving bb nutrition. so let bb enjoy one side first. even if bb dun get to drink other side at that feed, its ok, offer the other side at the next feed or pump it out.

do remember, some bb prefer only 1 side of the breast which is also very normal.. althou we are taught and we study the theory of it.. sometimes, it all depends on our bb's preference.. so we jus follow the flow and be ready to adjust accordingly [IMG=http://www.singaporemotherhood.com/forumboard/clipart/happy.gif] most impt thing in bf-ing is endurance and patience.. dont doubt ourselves.. [IMG=http://www.singaporemotherhood.com/forumboard/clipart/happy.gif]

Sweetkiss, yup pain and even bleed is pretty common (even my 2nd time mummy friends who has been BF their #1 for 1 -2 yr type all have the same problems again) . Of coz if you have the correct latch, there shld be no pain ,etc, etc. but in REALITY, to get the correct latch, its just pure practice, practice… whether left breast or both breast or pump, it's all play by ear in the end. When the time comes you will try everything :p

But to succeed in BF when there is a lot of pain, pumping helps a lot to provide relieve while your nipples recover to continue BF. It’s the initial part that’s tough. Coz we are learning, our babies are learning, everyone is adjusting.

springleaf.. can share why you choose c-sect with epi huh? BTW whats the difference between epi and spinal? Hubby still can cut the cord for C-sect with epi?

ak

c-sect hubby cant cut cord. that is what i know. epidural is at the spine.

sweetkiss

just remember, no matter what outcome u get fm bfing, some bm is better than no bm. so jiayou!

jellypurin : the snappies are cute! my gosh i pack my pump and that's it. It didnt even cross my mind that I havent pack bottles for storing leh! I bought milk storage bag liao.. I must rem to throw into my hospital bag [IMG=http://www.singaporemotherhood.com/forumboard/clipart/happy.gif]

ak

milkbags are good options too, but it does not help if u cant sterilise the bottles u used for expressing. so snappies are really quite good, just that you will hv 2 clean them before you bring the whole bunch to the hospital [IMG=http://www.singaporemotherhood.com/forumboard/clipart/happy.gif]

jellypurin: If we use snappies means no need to sterilize for first & even subsequent usage? Can advice? Thinking of ordering too.

vernie

still need to sterilize cos the bottles can be reused. can ask hubby to sterilise at home and bring new batch for expression later. standby milkbags like AK does in case no more clean bottles...

Carol,

You can choose to bring along your breast pump to empty your breast milk. Let bb latch on definate is better but in hospital sometimes bb won't at your side all the time.

i dun intend to bring breastpump cos very bulky... i think 1st few days also produce colustrum only, not a lot. if really need then pump can rent ma.

Mrslong, Ica, Jellypurin, Thanks for the well wishes!

AK,

C-sect can be with epidural i.e. anaesthetised from below the chest down to the feet or GA which means you will be unconscious during the surgery. I chose C-sect with epidural cos most importantly I wanted to hear my BB's first cries and breastfeed her when she's born and secondly I wanted my husband by my side. For GA, husband cannot enter. And for both types of C-sect, husband cannot cut cord cos this will expose him to the wife's opened up abdomen which I don't think anyone would want to see. But some people prefer GA cos they can't bear the feeling of being aware of themselves being cut up. So depends on how you see it when you pick the type of C-sect you want.

i'm having BH very often these days. tummy gets very hard, looks apple-shaped actually haha. contractions are very different from BH right? much more painful? I'm afraid i won't recognise contractions! was apparetly having them when doing ctg on saturday but i didnt even realise...

Jelly>> If you're going to pump BF @ the hospital, then how to sterilize the breast pump after each use?

I'm thinking of bring my breast pump to the hospital & then keep the milk in the snappies but then where to store the snappies ah?

springleaf,

Good luck ya and enjoy urself while you can from now till sun! But just curious, do Dr Yam charged more for delivery on a weekend? Which hospital you gg to deliver at?

Wah so judging at things, a few mommies are scheduled to pop this week. Do remember to share your experience ya, be it giving birth or confinement [IMG=http://www.singaporemotherhood.com/forumboard/clipart/happy.gif]

Springleaf : thanx for sharing! Seriously I rather be asleep throughout the operation coz I was told that other than the pushing, tugging and pressing of the tummy, some can also feel the doc pulling the thread as the doc sew us up! My hair stand when I heard that leh. But this is the very first time that hubby said he doesnt mind going into OT with me. So I think I will choose epi for him. Juz hope that he wont close his eyes all the time la... else wont do me justice coz I'm really scare to be awake while being sliced up! hehe

jelly: thanx for explaining! dunno can make it or not if i order the snappies now.. maybe I really should open my sterilizer and start sterilising a few bottles first...hehehe

Sun_tan,

Thanks. Frankly, I don't know about the extra charges leh. But even if there're extra charges, it can't be helped cos due to some personal logistics issues I found it more suitable for my surgery to be on a weekend when my family members are all available. I'm delivering at Mt E. All the best to you too cos I don't know if I still have time to log on after delivery.

i will definitely latch first. but if nipples sore after 1-2 days then i will pump in between to give my nipples a rest , yet stimulate milk supply. in the hosp, it's a good time to pratice latch of coz with the help with of lactation nurses. the problem i had with #1 , was despite latching so often till painful, bb still crying for more milk. so i pumped.

i have sterilising tablet which i will prob just ask for a big bowl from hosp, add water and the sterilising tab to sterilise the bottle.

atomickitten, its like going to the dentist for tooth extraction. you can hear all sorts of funny scary noises, tugging, pressure, etc but no pain.

Just had lunch. So full now.

Springleaf: All the best for your delivery. Take care.

Did you all watch the Family commercial? Always bring tears to my eyes when I watch it. No matter how bad the old lady behave or treated her son and DIL, her son always remember what his mum had done and sacrifice for him when he's young. Very touching. Hope my son will be the same when he grew up.

AK,

I though with epi, you should be numbed so actually shouldnt feel anything at all except that you can still hear the clinking of the tools and equipments and the conversation ard..

springleaf,

icic. Yup you take care of yourself when doing your confinement ya.

junie

okie, here is what i am going to do with my parts. basically, i will bring a lock and lock box. i will put my breastshield and membranes inside and poor hot water and steam for 10mins. b4 that i will wash it with detergent first to get rid of all the oil ... if worse come to worse, will buy/use my medela wipes... also v useful.

u can indicate to the hospital that they will feed bb with your milk or alternatively, hv ur hubby bring home and store in fridge/freezer.

Ann, i too was touched. but also reminded me that we are the DIL, so should also TAHAN and treat our MIL just as well :p

ann, i have a good example in my family. my grandpa didn't really care very much for my 3rd uncle. yet, when he was hospitalized, my 3rd uncle would stay with my grandpa at the hospital about 3 nights/week and he would massage my grandpa for hours cos my grandpa used to have very bad backache (he was bedridden). i've never seen or heard any of my aunts, uncles do that. i was very touched, because it was common knowledge that my grandpa didn't really love my uncle.

sweetkiss, i'm doing my c-sect on 26th. also at mt e. we can visit each other!

babycoco: wrong target haha!

i was reading a birth story by one June mummy just now. what freaked me out was she actually had natural delivery w epi but she could still feel the pain! so when she complained to the nurse hw come the epi's nt working, the nurse even told her it is not 100%... she had to endure w the pain thru her labour. so scary lor.

jelly>> Oh...which means need to bring some detergent too. I was thinking only 'sterilizing' the breastpump after 2 or 3 times, but each time just wash with detergent to get rid of oil 1st...Wondering if that's ok aka 'hygienic' enuff.

Sweetkiss,

ya, i also read about that June mommy's birth story. after reading, i was thinking "then, what's the use of epi". maybe the dosage not enough or they wanted her to be able to push

sun_tan,

i read that c-section with epi, sometimes the mommy can still feel the pulling and tugging when gynae's taking the baby out but no pain. and when they cut you up, the feeling is like unzipping the tummy

atomic kitten, i'm opting for c-sect with epi.

sweetkiss, i was told by my girlfriend that they will keep testing, by poking our tummy with needles. should be ok.

Ya loh.. it makes me worried what if the same thing happens to me. my pain threshold so low!

last nite i dreamt that my hubby woke me up cos my waterbag burst on the bed. it was so real! i woke up minutes after the dream to check my bed! i felt like i woke up twice, if u know wad i mean..

sweetkiss/ica

allow me to tell you why u need to feel the pain. epidural will be turned off when u r abt 8cm dilated. bcos if you dun turn off, u dun feel a thing on ur legs to push. that is when contractions are high and ur urge to push is at it's peak. this is also done to ensure that you can feel ur bb coming out of the birth canal. it is not that epidural dun work... like any anesthesia, it will work when full dose is given. also, epidural should be taken when u cannot take the pain from contractions. i opted for epidural that i can adjust the dosage and i was happy to feel what contractions were like so that i know how my body is feeling

of course, i had all the side effects hence, i could not remember much about my labour but i know what contractions feels like...

junie

detergent dun clean away everything. still need to kill the bacteria by sterilisation.

sweetkiss, don't worry. since i'm doing my c-sect before you, i'll let you know. but actually that was my main worry also, but a few people i spoke to said not to worry about it.

Sweetkiss

Very normal to have bad dream during pregnancy...

I even dream tat my hubby having affair with his cousin.. bcos i dont wan to hv a bb.. When I juz knew tat I am pregnant went to find hubby to tell him the news but caught him red handed..

ended up to let him regret I commit suicide...

seem so real!!!

Jellypurin: Oic.. but i tot after turning off the effect will still last for another 2hrs. haiyo... really scary ah!

babycoco: thanks and gd luck! my fren had epi c-sect and she said not pain one. she told me the drip was more painful than the epi injection! even my gynae said it's better than doing GA... recovery also faster..

mummies, went for gynae check up this morning, bb is 3.3kgs, so gynae said no problem to do the c-sect this saturday, 26th. will see gynae again sat morning for a final scan, and then admit to hospital after that. c-sect scheduled for 1pm. i'm both excited and scared! can't believe i'll get to see my bb so soon!

ica, my bb's head is big again... sigh, i'm 37wks, head is measuring 40wks.

sweetkiss

nah. my numbness was gone in 20mins.

those opting for c-sect u can ask gynae to administer more if u think u feel the pain and tugging.

just remember each tube of epi cost $!

sweetkiss, a few of my friends also said the same thing. so must be true then. they also said that the recovery for c-sect epi is faster than c-sect ga. so i'm hoping it's the same for us. i got abdomen binder from gynae today, did your gynae also tell you to get?
