Breastfeeding and milk supply...
Although I have not been adamant about the whole process to total breast feed but I I want to provide as long and much as I can for ugin.... Little or much well as long as there are some.. I'll continue...after 10 days oftotal breast feed for ugin it was tough and stressful i gave in to formula... Now its EBM in the day... FM night feeds...Presently my supply ranges 150--200ml per pump 4 times a day about 6hrs..... I do latch ugin on when he choose the breast hahaha... My left breast provides about 30-50ml more.
I think of later it did decrease supply though ....

Ida.... Please don't say about helping... So formal... We are friends and that will make everyone happy especially your baby...

daphne.. thanks again.... u are really so nice.. i am so glad to find this forum and made many new frens that are indeed very kind mummies though many are 1st time mummies... i told my hubby this is one of the best things that happen to my life.. finding frens like all of u and sharing experiences....thanks again

I had wanted to give ebm/ bf totally that I ahd purchased 10-12 boxes of milkbags and now I have barely used 1 box.... feel so depressed.

thanks! i got house of catering for my lunch. just had them first day yest and the food's ok. normal taste like those mixed rice stall outside but at least delivered to my house so one lesser worries. thanks!

oh dear, i'm drinking anmum lactation twice - three times a day to ensure sufficient nutrients. will try keep within twice a day & cut on cheese.

alfafa,
hope bb grace is ok soon! thanks for the alert!

jtho,
hmmn i wouldn't dare travel now coz of worries. might be pananoid but i tink the H1N1 situation in europe is not too stable now so wouldn't want to go esp the time need to spent in the aircraft. guess final decision has to be made jointly by yourself and hubby in consensus so that no one is unhappy. if still hv time, just monitor and decide later. watever, be careful and all the best!

asura,
you too, be careful and all the best on your flight!

re. blocked ducts
still getting this, either if i dun pump by 5 hours or for watever other unknown reason
sad.gif
how long i can bf will depends on this situation. imagine how difficult it is to deal with blocked ducts after bk to work n unable to pump on time!

irene,
i'm tking the health supplement "lecithin" to help prevent blocked ducts. almost for 2 wks liao, not really sure if it helps but my situation of getting blocked ducts did decrease in freq fm 2-3 times a wk till once every wk for these past 2 wks. but i hv also been latching on more freq so not sure if it's lecithin helping or not. understand that moomooland is also tking dis. maybe you can try?

re. tbf
mummies on tbf and latch on, how freq do your bbs need to drink after latch? my little boy like hungry very fast, after 30mins to an hour would need to drink again and sometimes not enuff bm for him liao. i can only yield 120-150 ml if pump every 4-5 hrs. is supplementing with fm else he'll be hungry.

re. bb update
hee my little boy has started to recognise ppl from 7 wks and will smile at me every morn. it's such a wonderful feeling to see his smile. guess dis is really wat gives us mummies motivation and power hee. he's quite a quick tempered one and very impatient. haha give him milk too slowly, he'll cry so loud and even after given, can hear him "complaining" while he drinks.

sad thing for mummy is he refused to sit in any of the carriers i bot for him. ergo carrier, the infant insert prob too hot for him, he hates and refused to be swaddled in that. balboa sling, he refused to go in as need him to bend his legs to put him in. he just luvs to keep his legs straight and despite trying and trying, i just can't get him in even with hb's help. sign..was hoping he'll take to one of them so that i can bring him out on my own. no such chance liao...and i hv no idea how i can bring him out now, how to hand carry and bring diaper bag at same time alone??

bb is coming to 8wks (another day's time)! and is almost 6kg or 6kg+ liao. hee i measure his weight by carrying him and weighing on my bathroom scales then weighing just myself to subtract so only a rough guage. am happy he's putting on weight but kinda worried how to carry him for long coz already getting backaches and arm cramps sometimes from cuddling him for long periods. and my little boy just refused to sleep or be left alone. he'll cry really pathetically and loudly until attended to. so has been cuddling him like for up to 8 hrs a day including thru his afternoon nap, that is if i want him to sleep. once put down, he'll wake up for sure and then get really cranky and frustrated from being unable to sleep, it's kind of heartache to watch. you know bb want to sleep, he keeps yawning and rubbing his eyes, but he just can't until cuddled and rocked in someone's arms. hopes all these behaviours will change after he's 3 mths old else my mil will hv difficulty helping look after when i go back to work and poor bb will be very frustrated and cranky at night when we fetch him. noticed that if he doesn't get to sleep in afternoon, he has hard time sleeping at night, needs rocking for more than 3 hrs to sleep. if he's well rested, he sleeps easier, abt 1-1.5 hrs spent to get him to sleep only. dun know if this is colic but i stopped giving him ridwind drops coz dun tink it's really helping anyway.

re. gathering
luv to join you all but i hv no idea how to bring bb out on my own since he wun sit in any of the carrier i got. sigh..prob later when he's 4 mths or older and can try sitting up then i'll try him in the carrier again...

sung:

My boy quite similar in personality to yours. Also can be very charming if he is in a good mood, needs a lot of entertainment from us, also very impatient when it comes to milk, and terrible at being put to sleep. If his sleep window is missed - wah lau super cranky. Sometimes it may be colic that makes him cranky and wakes him up from sleep, but we try not to carry him too much otherwise he will form an association between crying and being carried in response - this may already be the case with your boy if u had been carrying him all the time.
For us, after feeding if he is awake we put him in the bouncer in the living room and entertain him while he is sitting in it. Then the moment he display sleepiness signs - straightaway to cot for him to gaze at cot mobile until he expend his energy and whinge for sleep - then turn him prone so he settles himself by making "complaining" noises while he does it and can do that for any period from 5-20 mins. This is already considered good - if he wakes up from sleep from any kind of discomfort no way will he be able to do that though. In that case we still try not to carry him too much.

However to actually achieve that we had to train him for a couple of days for him to settle himself to sleep when he was a month old. Used crying down technique to do so. Luckily it worked quite quickly on him after a couple of times!

They say u cannot spoil a bb less than 3-4 mths old, but they can form bad habits thru association very quickly!!! The earlier u retrain them the better - don't wait too long.

areya,
haha i tink my little one already forms the association and we (my hb, mil and myself) are all guilty of it :p he wun sit or play by himself. at most 10 mins then the cry will comes. if no carry or no one to pat pat him, he will cry even louder and desparately. i know we shd train him to be by himself. but i just can't bear to do it. hv not left him to cry by himself for more than 2 mins. hee i always rush to his side. maybe coz ftm, so very gan cheong over him. guess got to train myself first!

sung:

Ya i totally can understand. Very xin1 tong4 to hear them cry. I have to thank my MIL who used to work in a nursery and therefore had loads of experience with bbs to initiate this and support me thru it. Some more I was having post partum blues and emotional well-being was at an all time low! But to be honest, I have no regrets, because at the end of the day he became happier also lah - more well rested overall cos dun need to take so long to settle him, and parents ie me also less cranky and tired and can now focus on entertaining him which also helps him develop his senses. The way i thought (and still think) about it is this: whatever u do to them now, will it matter in the future when they are 3-4 mths old, or when they become toddlers/children/teenagers, that u made them cry it out when they were a few weeks old? Ultimately every stage has its issues and as bb grows and changes their needs will also be different. Of course it also depends on the bb lah - cry it out doesn't work with all bb's namely the ones who have a sensitive and clingy personality I think.

areya
yup yup, very xin tong. i'm not sure what my bb's personality is, just that he is very impatient when it comes to feeding and really needy in a way for cuddle and carrying. he sleeps very lightly and any changes in position/posture, he will opens his eyes. sometimes i wonder if he actually sleep at all coz he wakes up so fast, one min looks like sound asleep, the other he's like wide awake. he jumps at small noises and he always like scared by things. i dun know if i'm right or wrong but one thing i'm sure is i really can't bear to watch him cry it out or not be by his side coz when he's frightened, the cry is terrifying and you can really see that he's scared, kind of heartbreaking for me. haha i always luv the basketball court downstairs just next to my block, so lively. but with my little boy, i hates the court, the basketball sounds always scared him!

sung,
i've never let my #1 cry it out coz i couldn't bear to, plus most bks i hv read dun support it for 1st 6 mths. she's been really confident from young n not at all clingy. only problem is sleepy time when she needs someone to b with her. hv u try swaddling him so he doesn't get so frightened by sudden noises? doing it tightly will help soothe him.

on feeding, maybe he's gg thro a growth spurt or he's fussing for something else. do u latch on or use bottle? good thing abt latch on is bb gets to control whether he wans to drink or not, as u can't force nipple into his mouth. so if he's not hungry, he wun latch or would just latch for a while n unlatch. with bottle, he will usually jus keep drinking since it's there. mayb try other soothing methods before feeding him?

Morning ladies...

bad mood for me today as I jus receive an email from the infant care that they still can't allocate a place for him and now i have problem returning back to work cos no one looking after my boy if I still can't get a place...
sad.gif
and hubby is so against the idea of baby sitter due to my in laws psycho-ing... I feel so lost now cos all plans are disrupted..and its hard for me to take no pay leave... hai...

hi moms who r bfing...

avoid dairy pdts...ur bbs may b lactose intolerant...i trying my best to revert to tbf/ebm...fm ~ friso soy but it tastes weird weird...my mom says bbs who take soy hav drier skin...my bro used to b this type of bb...not sure if now they hav improved on e fats content...

for those ms dropping, u may wan to check out those offering confinement meals / postnatal on a wkly basis to get nourished...

http://www.newbaby.com.sg

eating outside food not very helpful...if u hav domestic helpers, do insist on e meals u hav during confinement...in this way, both u n bb benefit in e long run...

i had 2 arguments in a row w my mil...so sad my hb got stuck in bet...now decided to let my mom take care when i back to work in aug...so sad cos we on diff freq n despite all e help she offers...i still don feel confident as a mom, mayb i put too much pressure on myself...sighz...said really nasty stuff during e heated exchanges...so sad too...but making plans to move out by this year...

bb is getting better...he still cries out loud @ times but now more aware of e surroundings...he seems to b sleeping less in e day...hmmm...itz a good time to interact him w stories/pictures...
happy.gif

hi mummy bean...if infant care application is on hold...can ur relatives help u for e time being?

tuskywollie,

cheer up.... I understand how u feel..me also will argue even with my own mum...sometimes the frequency is really diff..but we all wan the best for our baby...but just can't control also..and words just come out in a fit of anger...relax...no one is born to be a mom..we all need time to learn and cope... u will be better as time goes by...
happy.gif

tuskywollie,

thanks...ya... my in laws are willing to help..but they stay too far for me..so I need to make my boy a weekend baby which saddens me alot..cos I do not wan to miss his growing up...cos every month of his is so different...hai..dunnoe when they will give me a slot.. hopefully it will be real soon... praying really hard now...

Irene:

I also had blocked ducts in the past..and due to mishandling it became mastitis... and now I am on breast follow up..not scaring u..but just wanna let u know keep pumping and massage..know its really painful... but becos I mishandle it after my mastitis I totally have no MS... hence feel so guilty that I did not pump enough and my boy din get enough BM from me... know its tough...but keep it up yah...
happy.gif

Good morning mummies...

Tuskywoolie.... Lactose intolerence
Why dun u try
GOATs MILK??? It's second to breastmilk and taste better... Well it's meant for LT and babies with allergy reactions... I am feeding ugin with GM...he likes it so far...

jtho,

Forgot to mention, the other thing i did was to take Flu vaccine though it is not going to help with Swine Flu, it would help with the other strains of flu and lessen unnecessary worry. I figure since bb cant take flu vaccine, she would get it from my milk if i take. Since u are still bfing though not total, u might consider taking the flu vaccine. But hor.. heard from my GP that a lot of pple taking so stock running low. I can only think of the benefits of taking the vaccine whether going or not, so u might want to take asap.

alfafa,

Im sure Grace will be ok.. Will pray for her.

jtho,
It depends on u n ur hubby comfort level. So far, there is not sustained infection and most countries in Europe has one off case. But this flu virus is very unknown to the researchers and it spreads fast and "silent". I will hold it to next month if it was me.

mangogal,
My boy also has very stuffy nose! I tot I was alone.. so worried for the 1st few weeks esp. when many pple commented tt it doenst sound normal. Anyway my fren (a doc) saw him and says its v common for their age. Just use saline spray first then aspirator to suck the mucus out. I do this twice a day and it helps a lot. BTW air con makes his breathing worse so we don't swtich it on.

pups, when you latch on at night, do you feel that baby is not taking the full feed for EBM? Cos I have the thought that baby needs to latch on a few times at night in order to take in the same amount as EBM..

Kome and other mummies, thks for the advise regarding wet mucus in nose, glad that i am not alone...:p

Jo mickeymummy, thks! So where to get the saline and aspirator?

Grace, yup.. i guess i have to reduce the supply.. if not i will suffer when i'm back work.
these few days no blocked ducts, but i'm still trying to clear those on sunday de.. can still feel a bit hard there. scare the fever come back again.

mummybean, noted.. thanks for informing

mangogal,

Most pharmacies sell them.. Just check tt they r ok for babies. One thing to note, bb may not like the saline spray and my fren says some mothers r too soft-hearted to administer it. Coz' it's spraying into bb tiny nose and bb may cry out loud sometimes.. But my one simply bo chup.. haha..

Idaarshad,

what about the dairy products did u mentioned? cos i am on TBF but i am reacting to formula milk for lactating mums. i get gastrtis whenever i drink but i am ok with HL milk.

what happened to alfalfa's baby?

mangogal,

my brianne also had mucus in her respiratory tract.. PD says its normal so leave it.. only when she had those big lumps of boogers then i use cotton wool / buds to get it out

Mummies,

I long time also MIA liao. i am trying to keep my sanity handling bb alone without hubby. though mum is helping me, its the night time that kills me.. i am drained mentally and physically.. really feel like giving up on BF.

I get migraines and chestpains every day cos of lack of rest. been trying to log in and read but dun really have the chance to post. now bb is with mum. else.. i dun think i can even post.

Alfalfa,
May god bless your bb, dun worry .. your bb will be fine

Hi mommies,
thanks so much for your prayers and well wishes. Was really worried yesterday because Grace cried alot + very lethargic (like us adults when down wtih flu) + her poo poo had a layer of glue-like substance + there were blood specks and streaks.

Doc is not 100% sure it is diary allergy so we have sent her soiled diaper in for test. Will confirm tomorrow. But he said most likely it is due to my recent increase in intake of cow's milk. Actually I've always been taking small qtys of cheese now and then, as well as cow's milk. But the last 3 days or so I drank much more than usual, like 2 glasses in a day. This coincided with her sudden ailment. According to the PD, this is NOT the same as lactose intolerant. Just that for babies their bodies take some time to get use to cows milk so when mommies take ALOT of diary products it will show up in the bm n some babies who are more susceptibe will kanna.

i had to pump and dump, almost 800ml already. just went back to latching cos doc says take about half a day to one day to clear my bm. she seems better now too. thanks once again!

p/s milo n horlicks ok .. just don't drink it w milk. that what pd told me. probably stricter for me cos bb already kanna the allergy. i took cow's milk efore but this is the first time it happene

pp/s i've ordered my pikkolo!!! wow so pretty the mocca rouge. tried it at the thomson shop yesterday it was a breeze putting her in by myself n she looked so comfy. hubby likes it ver much.

Queenie,
Hee, I still not very confident to bring BB out on my own leh. Will confirm with u gals later if I can
happy.gif
Btw,where is PS where u bring Tristan for his swim?

Irene,
U also ganna Mastitis? Terrible...I got it last wk. Very sudden high fever @ 39.7, shivering like crazy and breast pain. U better now?

Ida,
The pretty maris one is like an apron but the Obuba one is like a big shawl with a hole for you to put your head through. With Obuba, you are covered front, back, sides ;)

Queenie,
Tristan is colicky is it?
Have you seen the nursing cover in person? I wonder how long it is... I am not keen in something too long. I short lah.

Daphne,
Thanks. I think if I get the dimensions from Alfafa, I should be able to make my own (after I get the required fabric, blah, blah, blah). But the thing is the sewing machine is at my mum's place and she will not want to open it up for me to use now cos she is preparing the house for my sis's wedding in 2 weeks' time. Then again, I may need 2 weeks to plan time to go buy fabric eh? Haha. Pardon me. Thinking aloud.

Ann,
Try to take fish, drink fish soup, eat more protein food during your meals to see if it helps? Otherwise, can try Goat's Rue supplement. This can be bought from the pharmacy at TMC. I took it when I had my first baby and I recalled it did help somewhat.

Sung,
The interval depends on how much baby drinks at each latch-on session. When she drinks properly and well, she can go for a full 3 - 4 hour stretch. If she snacks, then shorter.. 1 to 2 hours. She did that to me the whole of last night... wake up just to snack and this snack bar must be on-call for her from 2am to 6.30am.

For Balboa, my baby likes to straighten her legs and "stand" in the carrier when I put her in! Haha. I just let her be and after she is in, then slowly coax her legs to bend.

Areya,
There are times a night I really want to just let baby cry it out for a while instead of picking her up immediately. However, I am limited by the fact that she will wake her brother up. And once her brother wakes up, he will scream and yell due to disrupted sleep and do I want to handle 2 kids in the middle of the night and risk neighbours or police knocking on my door to check if there is child abuse going on? I don't think I want to go that way.

Vivien,
Don't quite understand your question... but for latching on, so long as baby is not too sleepy and is drinking properly, the amount drank can be more than what you offer for ebm! Cos baby decides how much he/she wants
happy.gif
This is especially so when you offer baby a full breast. But of course, if baby is in a stupor, then may not drink as much as compared to you insisting he/she finish a bottle of ebm.

Alfafa,
Glad to hear Grace is much better
happy.gif
Actually this is not really an allergy, it is more the intestinal walls of Grace is still not mature enough to handle the sudden diary load. For my boy, I was taking a slice of cheese every morning with bread right after birth and he also had this strange looking stools with blood streaks. Apparently, it is due to the dead cells of the intestinal wall sloughing off in reaction to the diary intake. When his gut got more mature, he could handle my cheese intake better and I continued to enjoy my pizzas! heh. :p

BTW, I posted a photo of using the MIM sling as a hipseat in one of my posts above for you to see.

oh yes yes that's what the pd said ... something abt intestinal walls. cos i asked him if bb has anal fissures (v painful leh cos i had that alot when i was preggie n constipting). thank goodness pd said no fissures. so iasked where was the blod coming from and that was when he said something about inflammation of the intestinal walls

you know i alkmost wanted to call you yesterday to ask for your advice whem i first saw the bloody poo. hehe you are the most exp here mah.

haven't have time to scroll up yet cos holding her w one hand ... pls excuse my typos! very clingy cos not feeling well i guess.

hey come my place to sew la, or borrow my machibe no problem. but don't know how you find time to sew now leh. if you come my place i can help jaga yours too
