Mummies,
Got two things to ask.
1) I bought Medela Mini Electric, saw on the box it says able to express directly into milkbag, anyone knows how to do it?
2) Saw a BP sometime ago abt Ergo Carrier. Anyone know where can I get Baby Bjorn Carrier cheaper? The model I am interested is Synergy and it is selling at $299 in SG. Not sure if USA website is cheaper?

Ivy, don give up on BF. If really lost, try going down to TMC to get Mrs Wong BB to help like what Asura did or call breastfeeding mother's support group Counselling Helpline : 6339-3558
I think babies on BM will wake up faster cos BM is more easily digestable than FM, so they get hungry faster

Do you think there is a difference if a baby is directly latched on or on EBM?
I assume if baby directly latches on, you won't know how much he/she is drink so he/she may wake up every 2hrly. However, for EBM, the quantity is more sure so waking up time may be delayed. Think so?

You may want to consider getting an electric pump instead to build your MS? I used to have the Avent manual pump...din know how to use so MS went down. But got the Medela Mini Electric & things changed. But then again, some mummies do think the manual pump is better....varies from person to person.

sg - its my 11th day, no leh, 80ml in less than 15min...before the motor knocked out on me haha
managed to borrow the motor from a friend, then pump out 110ml for both breasts..track record for the day...less stressful liao...

The initial stage of breastfeeding is really tough. Am not sure how long it would take but i guess it depends on individual and the bb as well. I myself am still struggling with the inability to cope with my bb's requirements, bb refusing to latch and tiredness from all the lack of sleep.
Just want to share on what my gynae said that give me a lot of encouragement and reduces my stress.
"As much as i am pro-total breastfeeding, please dont stress yourself and get urself into depression. A lot of new mummies like to compare how many ml they are producing. Many are very stressed trying to make total breastfeeding a success. There's really a lot more to motherhood than how much milk a mummy produce and what kind of milk the bb gets. Just do your best and supplement where necessary."
By the way, if u are really having problems producint enough milk for bb, u can consider getting a medicine called "domperidone" from your gynae. It helps to increase the milk supply. Gynae would only give 5 days worth of medicine. Can take together with fenugreek. I got it already but because of my block ducts, i decided to postpone taking it until my block ducts are cleared.
My block ducts are slightly better now and can see an increase every 2 days. Hopefully, i can catch up with my bb's demands as she should be entering into growth spurt soon.

Thanks. I am trying to drink a lot more water. CL didn't let me drink plain water but I told her at point blank just now that I NEED plain water else no milk. In view that she is really concern about baby, she gave in and ask me to drink warm water. Well, still like no improvement.
Baby has thrived on total breast milk so far, but I think tonight I have to instruct the nursery to give her FM if the ebm runs out.
Cos her demand when on phototherapy really increase by leaps and bounds! How I wish I can be there to nurse her whenever she needs milk :*( That will be so much easier than making sure there is sufficient stock of ebm.

No prob. Though it was only yesterday that i saw my gynae, my stress was reduced tremedously. My Breastmilk also increased a little, though i not sure if it was the fenugreek that i was eating, the block ducts that was cleared or the stress that was relived. In any case, feeling quite good now. I am still striving for total breastfeeding but am telling myself that FM as a supplement is not too bad too. hello mummies! good news and bad news... hai...
1stly ive given in to FM yesterday... initially i thought my BM nt enough for her... but when feed her FM, she takes in very little! less than 30mls/feed... then 2-3hrs later another 30mls... I didnt want to torture my tits anymore... my left side bled when i pumped. so sayang the colostrum. though was less than 10mls but stil very sayang... =(
today went for PD appt because she has jaundice... then today check the level.. it has gone up... had to admit her... heart pain... keep crying on and off... the good thing is hubby and i can rest tonight and tomorrow night... PD says stay til monday.. she needs the phototherapy... but now cant see her feel so upset... been crying on and off since i got home... anyway will go visit her later after my dinner... wanted to stay over but can only opt for Single bedder and its all full =(
good news is that my MS is slowly coming in... just now pumped... managed to get 25mls from both breasts combined... quite pathetic but its a lot to me... since past few days only few mls... im still waiting for engorgement... can feel it coming.. because boobs starting to get tingling sensation and harden... so before and during the pumping il massage very hard... i can endure the pain so still okie... i will JY!
maybe will try domperidone. ask my frn tk for me =P
time for dinner. will be back again tonight since i have a bit more time for myself...

asura - hai... my supply so pathetic... i will go in the morning n evenings with whatever milk i can provide... jus now i went... apparently her feeding has gone up le... looks like ive been starving her ... =( the nurses fed her quite a lot leh... at 7plus she drank 50mls of FM.. then when i was there, 8plus she crying for more... so fed her my 20mls BM and topped up with 40mls FM... also considering of asking the PD on monday if shld let her stay on in hospital few more days... becos he said the peak is Day 9... if discharge on Monday its only Day 7... some of the babies there were readmitted for jaundice lor.. i dun wan to go thru the torture again... so must get it cleared once and for all!
btw, the confinement food... if add the liquer.. 1 glass.. then boiled the chicken for 2hrs ... if we consume, then pump the BM, can the BM still be fed to baby?

missy - yes... no problem. Alcohol boiled in chicken wil evporate. I do take and BF together. Ask PD the question b4... but if u worried throw away first pump...

Missy - jaundice there is 2 type, one is immature liver that causes it another is breastmilk jaundice. So it doesnt mean babies with jaundice need BM lor. Actually depend on how high the jaundice is.

a bit heartpain now becos accidentally spilt 10mls of my EBM. ARGH! managed to get 35mls both breasts... lost 10.. so left with 25... zzz... nvm later wil pump again...

What is jaundice?
Jaundice is a condition that causes a yellowish discoloration of the skin and the whites of the eyes. If you press your finger against the nose or chest of a fair-skinned baby with jaundice, you can see this yellow tinge. If your baby has dark skin, you can see the yellowness in the whites of the eyes or in the gums. The most common type of jaundice develops on the second or third day of life — about when the baby is being discharged from the hospital — which is why it's important to know about it and keep an eye out for it. Most of these cases, called physiologic jaundice, disappear on their own in two weeks.
What causes jaundice?
A newborn has more red blood cells than her body needs, and often, when a baby's immature liver can't process them quickly enough, a yellow pigment called bilirubin (a byproduct of the red blood cells) builds up in the blood. Much of this bilirubin leaves the body in the baby's stool, but about half of babies develop some degree of jaundice during the first two weeks of life. Preemies and babies with genetic diseases or infections are especially vulnerable. Some breastfeeding babies develop jaundice if they don't get enough breast milk, because the bilirubin isn't able to exit the body through body waste. Breastfeeding jaundice usually shows up in the first two weeks of life. Should I worry?
Most newborn cases of jaundice are harmless and require no treatment. The doctor may order blood tests to measure your baby's bilirubin levels, which usually involve taking a small amount of blood from your baby's heel. In moderate cases of jaundice, the doctor may prescribe phototherapy (light therapy), which involves placing the baby naked under special blue lights that help her body break down the bilirubin so that it can be excreted. This can be done in the hospital or at home with a portable unit. A special kind of fiber-optic blanket, called a bili blanket, has a similar effect. In addition to phototherapy, it's important to keep your baby well hydrated and to identify and treat any underlying medical issues. Your doctor may recommend breastfeeding more often or supplementing with formula to give your baby more fluids and help her pass more bilirubin in her stools. The goal of treatment is to lower the bilirubin level to prevent the buildup of toxic levels in the baby's brain (a disease called kernicterus). With monitoring and treatment, the risk of kernicterus or other complications drops to almost none.

Update tonight will be my turn le.So sacry tonight will be gg to admit to MT A for induce gynae ask me to admit at 0001-0030.Hopefully baby will come out monday afternoon or evening usually. Finally can see this little mischevious have been playing hide and seek.Finally can unload this heavy tumtum.Also means slpless nites coming haha.

mummies, i was sharing with missycandy Fri...my irritating CL poured away my 50ml of EBM...coz i heat up for bb...but he fell asleep soon after... ask ard..and was told can keep the milk for not more than 1hr...so i told CL cannot keep long..lets see hw. nx minute less than 5..i saw my bottle was gone..n i asked her, she said poured away liao!!! i'm so angry yet i can't say anything. (worried she might do harm to bb if i'm nasty to her)..called my sis to complain n cried mah. =( she got so many things to do..why is pouring my EBM more impt??? if i have plenty of ss, i won't mind wor...aaarrrgghhh...best is my bb woke up crying for milk shortly...sigh....

yesterday i also asked the nurse abt the EBM.. she said after warming if not consumned must throw le... my bb nearly wasted my EBM yesterday! after the nurse warmed it bb fell asleep... wa... i faster wake her up... luckily she drank it all... if not very heartpain... on top of that, she also drank FM 40mls.. haa.. i think now her intake is ard 60-80mls le... my EBM only half or even less than half of it... then the rest top up with FM.. no choice... but quite happy to see that milk does come out... hahahaha!

sg - I try to pump intervals of 3-4 hrs. think it would be more accurate to measure in total ml for the day, to see if ms has gone up? I also pump whenever I feel engorged. no consistency in ms yet. roughly min of 60ml for both breasts. still playing catchup...

Was reading somewhere that the effects come in abt 1 to 3 days. But hor.. i find myself perspiring more since i started taking. I bought the GNC one.. only take 1 capsule per day so far though the maximum consumption is 2 per day.

Even when we heat up milk, is by 20 ml each time so that if bb decides not to drink liao would not waste so much.... Just let the bb wait for milk lor.. Maybe try to let her know nicely. By the way, u have full month liao.. so does it mean that ur CL is going back soon? If yes, then not so bad lah.

i can fully understand how u feel. my boy was admitted for phototherapy when he was 5 days old. it was valentine's day then.. the saddest one ever... the hospital will call me 30mins in advance before his feeding time and i will drive down to feed him by latching him directly. he was admitted for a night only.
but now he is almost 5 weeks and his jaundice still there... disappearing... pd said as long as u feed bm.. the jaundice will take 6 to 8 weeks to disappear...
initially i was disheartened about my supply. i took fenugreek. no effect.... then i tried motillium... a bit of effect.. so now i succumed to 95% fm.... i guess it is the misconception and the great hoo haa... that mummies felt like they have disappoint their babies if no bm... i pushed the thought away...
my boy went thru so much in his 5 weeks of life. he fell under the 1% of babies who got infection from BCG jab... 7 days old got to take antibiotics oredi... and last week he got flu and cough.. and nobody is sick... i guess adjusting to the environment... he was 2.36kg at birth... a day before his full month.. he was already 3.9kg.. and he only take 70-90ml of milk every 3 hours....

congrets to all mummies who have pop and hang on there for those breastfeeding...u CAN DO it!!!!
i went for my check up yesterday and found out that my boy is abt 3.36kg already when i'm only at wk37. Chances of c-section will be very high if my boy stay inside till full term
. Just to check if any mummies here who deliver weight of more than 3.3kg babies natural birth, are u all tall?? cos i'm only 1.55 and my dr did mention that height may be one of the factor as well to determine the chances of natural birth. sooo sad i don't want c-section, hope my boy faster pop out
