(2002) Any 2002 babies?

bebe75,
that is very innovative.
it is not silly at all.
my son uses such 'techniques' to help him remember his words and he has fun remembering them too!

Hi Fz,
Really envy you that your son loves to write chinese character.

Hi Jolene,
Looks like we are facing the same problem.

Hi bebe75,
You have a very special way to teach your gal.

I must really think of a way to make him feel happy when writing chinese character.

As this week is school holiday, the teachers had given out a lot of homework for my son to do.
More than 15 cloze passages, 3 writing sheets in Chinese, 1 chinese compo sheet, 2 practice paper(Chinese and Mathematics).

Needless to say, my son has not completed the writing sheets for chinese. Everytime ask him to do, he will start to find excuses- complanining too noisy, too many words to write, ..etc

****Sigh****

For me
I am just using this week to do revision as I did not fulfil what I have planned to start since Sep. So my target for this week is just to finish revision.

Weekend we will do some papers and next week I will just let her go for enrichment classes as per normal and sleep early. Wont do any further revision.

hi mummies, my dd refuse to revise her text books and school worksheets for all the subjects. She said its very boring going thru what she already learnt. But she has been doing assessment books and papers. Is it a must to go thru the texts and worksheets? Keeping my fingers crossed.

Valerie
Ha ha my gal is the other way round. Will revise text but not willing to do extra.

For me I doing revision using text and go thru her worksheet to check on her past mistake. Then over the weekend will get her to do a few papers and that is will not ask for more.

Actually if she has grasped the concept and understand well and able to do the assessment and papers it is good enuff

Hi Valerie,

Personally I feel that don't have to go thru textbook n worksheets..let her do more past year paper is more than enough..this is what I did to my gal...

Thanks CL & Jolene.
Its another 2 weeks of hard work and the P1 exam will be over. Can't wait till 4/11 (last paper for my dd). Hope all our kids will do well in the coming SA2.
kao_cheers.gif

i dun think i have time to go through the workbooks and textbooks. at least giving exam papers, the kid can do it himself and i only need to go through the errors. going through text/workbooks is very time consuming.

My gal was also given extra homework and elearning to do at home. Not much time for me to go thru the texts. I merely looked thru her worksheets (Quite a handful..she did those in schools since Jul and the teacher only returned to us last week..!#$@%!#@$) and focus on her weak areas.

Check with you mummies regarding English open ended compre:
Q: Why did they start gobbling down their food?

My gal wrote : It was because they were hungry.

The teacher marked it wrong. The correct answer shd be : They were hungry.

I am bewildered..I thought her answer was okay. Or am I wrong??

Bebe 75,
cos the Q ask Why (did they) start gobbling down their food? so shld use They were......
"It" is singular....and only used for things & animals...Hope it help!

Bebe, i agree with you that your dd's answer seem alright. To me the proper answer should be "They started gobbling down their food because they were hungry." What your dd did was just subsituted the first few words with "it". Or should at least give half the marks instead of totally wrong.
But somehow Jolene's explanation seems correct too.

bebe75,
I agree with Jolene. I think the teacher wanted your gal to have the proper usage of grammar, that's why she marked it wrong.

I need to go through the chinese textbook in order to let my son recognise all the words, even some of the words are not being tested. Just wanted him to be well prepared.

As for mathematics, I don't even touch on the textbook and worksheets. Just let him do the assessment and practice paper.

For english, due to stellar program, all I can do is to let him go through all the worksheets and let him do more practice papers that I have bought.

Really hope that the examinations will be over soon. Since I stay at home for this week, I think my son get more scolding than I am at work. He seems to lose a lot of freedom. Every morning, when he wakes up, make him do practice paper. I know it's a tortune to him, but no choice.

hi bebe, thanks for bring out this issue.

Hi Jolene, thanks for explanation. all along I thought "It is/was" can be used with the word "WHY',irregardless of that plural or singular.... as long as they ask why, if we do not wish to 'copy' down the first part, we can start the answer with "It is/was..." I've this thinking since young till now.. even taught my son such... :p Now I've to correct myself and advise my son... once again, thanks for bring it up.

Hi Yen Ling

For chinese I used the chinese flash card used by the school to revise with my gal...i wrote down all the chinese character in a exercise book to let her practise her "shu bi hua" and also let her do past yr paper too...

Hi Jolene,
You mean the teacher in her school provided another set of Flash card, other than zi bao bao?
If there is the case, the teachers in her school are very diligent.

For my son, they do not have "bi hua". The school has Abolished that.

Hi Jolene/Valerie - thanks for enlightening me.

Like Natellehcim - I was also taught to use "it was/it is" to answer "why" question in comprehension when I was in my primary sch.

I flipped thru my gal's worksheet and I noted that the teacher had not asked them to use the word "because" in answering "Why" question in the compre section.

We are less than a week away from the exam..I wish we can get over the whole ordeal as quick as possible. On the other hand, I wish I have more time to do more revision with my gal.

I have not touched on chinese yet..only get her to surf the online chinese textbooks website.

To all mummies,
May I know anyone came across Sakamoto method?
Is it good?

I am thinking of enrolling my kids to the centre, but not sure if it is good.

hi Yen Ling,
my ds is taking it. It is booklets type and when you finished one you will be given the next level... something like Kumon, if i'm not wrong... It is franchised, thus depends on individual center. Some centers will combine the levels and let the kids do the booklets and will advise and coach when they face problems with the questions. However, I prefer centers that does not combine the levels, like my ds'. The teacher will run through the maths concept and method before letting them do the questions in the booklets and will also go through the questions with them in class. The one he is attending seems like a normal tuition center only that the teacher is sakamoto-trained and the worksheets they used are sakamoto papers. Maybe you won't see the effect right now for lower pri, but I believe it might comes to help in future for problems sums, which it claims its strenght in.

Hi Yen Ling - My gal attended Sakamoto for a term and did not like it. The teacher assumed that all students, incl my gal to have basic maths concept. Unfortunately, my gal had limited maths/logic foundations and she was somehow lost in the class. Though she was given extra worksheets to do so as to build up the foundation, the pace was too fast for her, she ended up getting more confused than ever.
I have heard that sakamoto is quite effective for modelling problem sums, but I think my gal is not up to that level yet.

Hi Jolene - My gal will start her papers on Tues. But I think I will stop all the revision work by Sunday evening.

These few days, she was busy doing her elearning, corrections, complete her sch worksheets. Frankly speaking, I would rather the sch to give out those worksheets on a weekly basis as homeworks, instead of giving them now as revision works. Alas..not much time to attempt assessment books or past years' papers now.

bebe75

You may want to try Kumon? lots of drilling which should be good for building foundation at the intial stage. After a while you can switch her to other more creative type of Maths enrichment

Hi Yawn Yawn..we did not consider Kumon as we were afraid that it is too taxing for her. She has short concentration span, and gets tired easily. Can you imagine that she has to take naps in the afternoon for these past 5 days??? I wonder if she naps in her class if she is in sch.
Her daddy said I prob drill her too much, but my daily revision schedule :

830am - 10am = complete the task listed in the elearning
10am - 1100am = revise and do corrections for those elearning practice that she had completed the day before
11am - 1pm = bath / lunch / break
1pm - 2pm = complete sch homework (worksheets)
2pm - 330pm =nap
330 - 400pm = tea break
400pm - 530pm = past year exam papers (one subject)
530pm - 630pm = break (while I prepare dinner)
630pm - 800pm = dinner and family time
830pm - 1000pm = Review the sch worksheets and the past year exam papers which she had done in the day.

Currently she is attending MPM, and she is enjoying it. The good thing abt MPM is that each student will have some tools to enable them visualise the problems. She is very excited whenever she proceeds to the next level and receives a new set of tool. However, I do not like the language used in their worksheet. As MPM is originated from Taiwan, some of their English language usage does not sound right to us in local context, and she gets confused. We had highlighted a few cases to the teachers who said they will feedback to its Taiwan HQ.

I do not know if MPM is effective for her..but I might consider switching to 1-to-1 tutor if she is still struggling with maths in P3.

Bebe75

Why don't you try Enopi Maths? I heard its quite good...personally I don't believe in drilling...I prefer to let the kids grasps the concept which I feel that its more important...no point keep drilling and they don't understand the concept..just my point of view
happy.gif

Hi Jolene - There is one Enopi Maths center near my place. I think its teaching prog is somehow similar to MPM, except that it originates from Korea and I was told that the kids can keep the worksheet after completing them. I did not choose Enopi Maths as I was not comfortable with that center environment - a bit small and dim.

Yes, I think understanding the concepts is the most important steps in maths. My exboss told me her daughter, also like mine, very weak in maths concepts (failed her P1 maths exams). She attended Kumon since K2, but not much improvement as she was very slow in class. Currently she is in P3, still doing Kumon (as she needs a lot of practice to stick the ideas in her brain). However, he also engaged a private Maths tutor for her. He said so far, her maths test is around 60-70 marks, which is considered good. At least, she has not failed any papers. He is unable to tell whether it is Kumon or private tutor that helps, or is it due to her logical thinking skills development. But so long as she does not fail her maths exams, he is willing to let her continue both Kumon and private tuition.

Hi natellehcim and bebe75,
Thank you for your advice.
Actually, I always taught Sakamoto method is to help weaker students to learn from the basic and use modelling to help them better in terms of tackling questions.

Well, after hearing from the advice, I think I need to reconsider. Currently, my son is able to handle P1 mathematics by himself. He don't have much problem and I don't need him to coach him.
I am more worried about my girl who is attending P1 next year and she don't have any mathematical concept.

Hi Bebe75,
You really planned your time well. I take the whole week leave, except Thursday.

I think it's really hard to revise all the subjects with him. I only make sure my son completed some papers each day and sometimes he complained too much.

I just told him that just bear with it for another 2 more weeks. After that, he can relax.

My gal is also taking her exam next week. Have made her do exam papers (all subjects) from Mon - Fri. Hopefully "last min hug buddha leg" will have some effect.

May I know are all children required to taka a CCA by Pri 2? My gal is contemplating taking Chinese dance. I'm not sure if it's compulsory.

My dd seems very drained, refusing to do assessment papers, maybe i will take it slow from now, don't want to over stressed her and gave her a day off yesterday.
ALL THE BEST TO ALL P1 KIDS HAVING EXAM THIS 2 WEEKS.

Nat, pass by your ds school, it look so new with a fresh coat of paint.

ya..good luck to all 2002 kids...hope they do well in the coming exams..

Valerie - I am also taking it slow..revision works stopped at 1000am last night. I ask my gal to try her best this week, do whatever she knows first, check her works thrice before submitting. God will see her through if she put in her best effort.

Hi Yen Ling,
My gal also going P1 next year. I have the same worry as you. She is not able to understand the concept of maths, thus I did not send her to Sakamoto maths, like her brother. Instead I put her in Just Education to 'prepare' her for P1. I doubt she understand totally what she had learnt, but at least a little does help for her next year.

Hi Valerie,
ya the school had just gotten a new coat of paint but inside the school still old leh... ha..ha....

My son's having his paper 1 (compo) tomorrow then the main paper on Friday. Good luck to all P1 kids.

BP,
I feel more stressful now than when I'm taking the exams myself! The worst is tt she has been sleeping longer hrs than usual (last time 10.30pm, now 9pm every nite), so there is no time to revise with her. I was looking thru' dd school's past yr papers yesterday and the more i look, the more worried i got ...doubt she knows how to tackle the maths qns...

cookiepie,
I'm trying to take it easy. This morning, I let my gal sleep late and then relax. Cos if the kid is too stress, may not perform well also. Today is English paper!

Hi Mummies,

All The Best to our Kids who are having their exams this week.

Let hope they could surprise us with good results

Dear all
First time, my son would be doing eng & chinese compo, don't know can write or not. I had took leave whole of last week.

Eng & chinese, my worry is compre. He also has difficulty remembering chinese characters.

Maths, he is okay.

Hi Mummies,

We had done our part to do whatever we can just keep our fingers crossed and pray hard that the kids can do well this time round
happy.gif

My gal will be having her English paper today...nothing much we can do now...except to remind her to check check check. Counting down to Friday, when she is having her last papers...
