What to consider when choosing Gynecologist and Hospital

Hello,

My wife just discovered that she is pregnant according to 3 pregnancy tests. She is a SPR from Malaysia and I'm an EP holder. We are trying to learn what we need to do next. I know that nobody can tell us who we would feel comfortable with, but perhaps some of you could provide us with things/points to consider when going about picking a Gynecologist and Hospital. Obviously a big one is cost. I'm aware that public will be cheaper than private.

Some questions I have:

1. I believe that subsidized is cheaper at the public hospitals but then we cannot pick the Gynecologist who sees us during my wife's checkups and who delivers the baby. Is this correct?

2. Do doctors at both private and public hospitals have prenatal packages where we only pay one lump sum that covers the prenatal care? Is it worth it? Does my wife get to use Medisave on the prenatal costs?

3. Is there any benefit of going to a public hospital, such as Mount Elizabeth, vs going to a public hospital like KKH and picking our gyanecologist and paying a higher/non-subsidized rate?

4. Any advise on going about picking a Gynecologist or a Hospital?

Appreciate any opinions and advice. This will be our first kid so we are trying to learn and fast!

1. You can go the private route in KKH. Still subsidized, and you can choose your own fixed gynae.

2. Not all have packages, but I believe most do now. I would say that a package that works out to be less than $100 per session for a private gynae is quite ok. Pre-natal packages are claimable from Medisave up to $900

3. You could say better team of nurses or facilities/amenities for private hospitals. Shorter waiting time maybe.

4. Would you like a gynae who tells you every single detail? Or one who just tells you what's important. Things like that, you can narrow down your search. Also, would be good to pick a gynae that's near your home so that you dont have to travel far. Hospital wise, TMC specialises in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Fertility, etc.
