Premature babies support group

Mesh
How much milk did the neonat order for per feed? You can try to increase gradually and see if he can finish. Very difficult to tell you exactly how much to give because it depends very much on individual baby.
When is your actual due date?
Your baby is now corrected age 3 wks old.
Are you referring to KKH MRSA Section? My elder boy was there from NICU to SCN.

Bena
I was on intravenous salbutamol to stop the contractions. This drug causes palpitations, tremors, nausea and vomitting. I had the first side effect.
Remember to ask/remind your gyane to administer the steroid jab on you to promote foetal lung maturity. Think the medical name of this is "corticosteroid'.
Take care!

costa, actually my sisters kids are in the school. that's y they went to the carnival...
yes, i went for the eye review last week. they did not schedule me for SLT. but i am seeing dietician and neonat next monday.

btw my son always falls asleep halfway thru feed. smtms i wake him up to drink finish. if not, have to wait till he wakes up... how ah? i dunno how to increase his feed. as he keeps on sleeping and take soooo long smtms. he only drink fast when he is hungry (which means i wait for him to cry!)

daec, my son is on 4 drps of ferrum twice a day. dunno y need so much.

mesh,
good morning...hope i can explain to you wat is mrsa infection...its an infection which they discover when they take samples from the nose..they hv to isolate the babies so that they dun spread it..its harmless(if i m not wrong)..even doctors and nurses will get it and are tested for it..even normal adults can get it..we can get cured by walking under the sun...for the preemies,.they are administered wif nasal cream which will help them to cure it but they need to isolate them and even after they are ok, they wldnt put the babies back wif the others just in case.....

it cld be due to too much handling of the babies for the different procedures like IV drips, blood tranfusions etc which caused this...

in my opinion, its nothg to worry about altho i noe as a parent, you are vy worried....

when my son was moved to mrsa isolation, i was vy worried but one of the nurses told me that upon discharge, i wld be happy as the level of service here is more personalised...less babies to one nurse.....its true, upon discharge, i actually appreciate this place...

as for nec, i think it stands for some necro..etc..maybe you can research it by looking at preemies' bb websites..

eh, i better dun talk too much...if not, later, i become branded a ms "know it all"

lindah,
oic, yr sisters' kids in the same school..no wonder they went..

bbs usually vy sleepy....but still must feed him leh...no matter wat....must wake him up to drink..that was wat i was told as i read smwhere or smone told me that preemies digestive system not so developed and they wldnt cry when they are hungry until later..

its true, my son was tube fed and if i din feed him every three hrly, he also wun cry...

Hi Jane,

Happen to read ur post, my waterbag too suddenly leaks when I was in my 26 weeks(without any pain). I stay for 9 days in hospital and eventually my boy came out during his 27 weeks gestation.

Did ur doctor find out what causes the waterbag to burst?

Me was up with puppp during 24 weeks and I was taking TCM to ease the iche. When I was taking the TCM medicine, I've got pink discharges. Dun know whether is it becos of the TCM make my waterbag burst earlier.

Hi mummies,
Cn baby celebrate birthday 2 time? mean that one on lunar one on english one? and can cut 2 cake or not? please advise.
For me, my twins 1 years old birthday will be on 14/8/2007,i am thinking to have one gardening and cebralation at mcdonald, inviate some friend. but my mother in law going to celebrat & pray for them on their lunar one as at september, how your think? is it my mine should't hold as my friend told me dont do 2 time....
Thanks.

hi jess, no particular reason given for my water bag to give way. such a coincidence, i also had pink discharges before my waterbag give way (and i was not on TCM). that time my gynae even did a 'high risk permature' test and i pass it...then..suddenly my waterbag give way and i stay hospital for 12 days then my boy arrive (naturally) when i was hit by fever. my placenta everything ok...

how is your boy now?

Mich, my actual edd is in end august. i checked internet,... corrected age is the age after our edd... which means b4 we reach end aug,... i don't consider corrected age for my kids ya? use their actual age for now is it?

when discharged, the nurse told us he wa feeding 43ml, but make 60ml and let him try ...see if he can finis... and he did finish it.... a few days later he start to seem to need more.... cos 43 ml and 60ml is quite a difference.... we have been quite hesitant to give him more.... thou the nurses told me if he can take let him take more... but deep inside.... we so heartache if he over tax his intestines and guts.... so we have been resisiting... only this week we decided to give him 5ml more... and we'd increase by 5ml every week.

costa... what u described as mrsa is same as what dr described... he also assured us its harmless.... but somehow..... aiya... i'm sure u understand how i feel. but u are right... maybe i should appreciate it...maybe its god's will he has special personalised services... he seems to be most mild temper of the 3 and i'm looking forward to having him home. dun worry i follow this thread for a while... i know who are the people who have gone thru much and have experiences to share and its perople like you that we prememies mummies can count on for support.... keep sharing.... i know i'm not the only one who appreciates the sharing.

:)

anyone babies still in scn.... maybe we can meet up if we happen to visit our darlings on the same day? can PM me...

lindah,

Happy and glad that your baby had discahrged from hospital. Enjoy your little sweetheart. do bring him back to visit the aunties in NICU or SCN when he comes back for TCU/ review.

Once again, "little one, you made it to home. yeah !"

hi mummies,

how are all mummies & little warriors doing? been so long since my last login cos super busy with new job.

the thread is so active & well supported by so many mummies... feels really good to see the positive energy going around.
keep it up!

Jane
Dr Argawal encouraged us to let the babies look at mirror. They were so amazed by it.

Mesh
My apologies. Typing a post at 11pm plus made me no good. I gave you the wrong information on Corrected Age!!
Yes.. You are right on the Corrected age it shd be calculated based on the EDD of the child.
I have no clue how to calculate your childs age. Maybe mummies with preeemies born around the same gestation as yours can advise.
Milk When my elder boy was discharged at 40 wks gestation, he was on 55ml per feed, 3 hours interval.
MRSA Are you at KKH? I love the environment of KKH MRSA Section as per what costa mentioned, it was like first class service!

Costa
That was a very impressive definition!

Lindah
Normal for babies to doze off while drinking milk. Tickle their chin to make them suckle.

BuzzBubbly
Are you a missy from NICU har?

Mich,

Thank you for the advice! How long did salbutamol delay your labour?

I realised I'm totally reliant on Nifedipine. Last nite at abt 4am, the meds effect worne off and my BH was coming at 5-15 mins apart. I was so afraid that I'll go into labour and quickly took the meds. Then things got better again with the BH contractions at abt 1-2/hr.

hi mich -- haha really oh..then i am relief and can let my boy (who seem to admire himself so much) look at the mirror :p.

yes...buzzbubbly is a mee see ;-) think we all know her

hi yvonne - long time no chat, kiddo keep you busy? update us on the progress ;-))

Hi jane n costa,

My doctor also told me no reason. Me too was having fever and the doctor perform c-section for me.

My boy is now at home after staying at NCU-40 days n SCU-35 days. He is taking polyvisol, ferrum, oil and protein now.

BTW, r u all still BF ur child? My BM seem to deduce and not enough for my boy.Can only pump 400ml per day.
sad.gif

hi jess, me too had fever (quite sudden) on the 11days when i was in hospital. but mine boy came out naturally (cos diluated).

my boy stay in hospital NICU 60 days and SCN 30days (around there)...

wow so you are a SAHM now?

for me..now my boy on solid and on formula milk.

just continue to pump and supplement when need be...

thanks buzzbubbly.
happy.gif

the little darling just pooed till the diaper overflow. urgh. hhehehehe. stained my mattress cover cos i thot din need changing pad.

my son wake up for milk at 10 am tdy. he slept from 1 am. normally he will wake up at 6am for milk. dunno y. hope nothing. i think cannot give him more than 90ml per feed. he puked out when he reach 90ml or so. i was trying to convert him to four hourly

Mesh,
good afternoon.....hope tt your mind is at ease...besides mich and myself, mummylian's bb was also isolated together wif my son at mrsa....it was maximum only 3 babies to one nurse....at one point...at first, i was really sad and moody..later i was vy happy liao..haha....

mich,
thanks for your compliment....i can float liao...

Bena,
I wish i can tell you more about my case but i was really concussed in the hospital and total bedrest..i think i was on drips and i dun noe wat else i was on but as wat mich said, the jab is vy important if there are signs of premature labour...the jab takes 48 hrs to take effect...so do watch out for it...maybe get yr gynae to monitor you more closely now, can?

Yvonne,
how are you and yr boy?u coping well wif new job and everythg?guess we miss you here..hope to catch up wif you when you are more settled...

jess,
Can fill us in on the details of yr child, eg date of birth....so that one of the mummies here can update the table

400ml is quite good, pump frequently and more times...sad to say, i stopeped last saturday after a year...it dropped to ridiculously low amt...and so i decided to give up...

did you try supplements like fenugreek ,goat rue?

hi jess, me a working mum. that time when my boy went home, me too toke 1 month off to take care of him...

now my mum is the main caregiver (with the help of a maid).

enjoy your time with your boy :)

lindah..why u want to convert to 4 hourly? 3 hourly seem ok...

costa - tell u something. yesterday my boy went to bed at 6.30pm...11.30pm wake up for milk...then GOSH! 3 am wake up sing song (loud loud)...then finally 5am go to sleep. then 6.45am sing song again...gosh....haha

Bena
Delay for about 2 weeks plus.
Is it possible for you to be admitted so they can observe you further?
I recalled I was put on an equipment and docs said they detected contractions although I cant feel it.

Mich,

I was put on CTG on Monday and they detected contractions all of which I could feel. My gynae also did a vaginal examination and found that I'm not effaced or dilated. But she's still uncomfortable abt the frequency of my contractions which she believe are BH. So she put me on oral meds which helped to reduce the number of BH contractions I'm getting now. I really don't know when I should be going back to her or what is considered normal/ abnormal but I intend to email her tonite and hopefully she can advise me.

By the way, I'll be delivering at TMC and if I deliver prematurely, the NICU cost will definitely be exorbitant. Any mummies here can advise me what I should do to minimise the cost? Eg transfer to KK etc?

Thanks so much for all your advices!

Costa,

I guess the next step if my contractions get worse, is to put me through what you and Mich have gone thru and also administer corticosteroid to strengthen baby's lungs
sad.gif

Bena,
If you worry abt the cost, maybe wat you can do it to tell yr gynae about yr worries and maybe wat she can do is to write you a referral letter to kkh.....and wat "class" patient are you at the pte hospital..?sorry if i sound vy kay poh..becuz if you trf to kkh, the first $15k is private rate and must go thru means test to "downgrade"..after seeing the medical social worker...

also, why i ask for the class you are in is becuz for eg u are in A class in private, you come to kkh, you wld be charged A rate until downgrade....

for a 31 wker, i dun noe how much the cost wld be at private hospital but personally, i find that kkh nicu is the best....anyway, personal opinion...

if you need help on further questions, u can pm me, i can find out from the kk pple on yr behalf...

Costa,

I chose A class at TMC. But this can easily be changed since I have not delivered yet and can still downgrade. When my gynae write the referral letter, does it mean that I will be delivered by another gynae in KKH? And what do you mean by the 1st S$15k is pte rate? If you have MSN, can we chat?

bena,
me going home from work now already..usually i leave at 5 plus but today got work to do...

maybe you pm me yr questions and i try to answer you 2mr....u pm me yr msn nickname and i add u in.....

tink wat it means is you wld be charged private rate to the tune of $15k, later then it wld be subsidised rate.i cld be wrong but can find out for you..tink the other mummies may oso noe..

my case is a strange one as i stayed for q some time in kkh..but if can, i will help u if need be..

talk tmr..still got work to rush...

hi lindah..haha ya sing tunelessly (ah e O Pa Ma thou yee and many more)... sigh at 3am keke 3am..please tonight i hope he don't repeat it again :p. i cannot tahan ah...i tried to ignore him but the singing just get louder and louder until i just hav to play with him before he manage to sing until the whole household wake up :p

oh..thought 3 hourly is a good timing? dunno ler...haha. i always thought 3 hourly is a good measurement :p but i guess each baby is different...

Wow, spend some time reading the posts, and found we got a new member here. Welcome jess!

Beno, I delivered at raffles last time, then got my boy transferred to kkh. I almost couldn't because of not enough bed in NICU! So you better ask your gynae to help you chop a place for your baby at kkh NICU if possible.
Btw, I was put on anti contraction pills from 5th pregnancy month to giving birth, around 2 months. I was put on drip when admitted to hospital for contractions too. So I dunno which is the cause of the weakening of my heart.

Mesh, you have triplets!!!

Lindah, enjoy time with your boy!!

Jane, my boy woke up 4am almost twice a week too. hahaa....he will be walking about, playing, then go back to sleep around 8am or 9am. want my life.

Hi all
Costa
Don know can continue to breastfeed???

Any one can advice???
Very troubled.. Am pregnant with my no.4 . Now 6 weeks I guess... My premie gal is now 11 mth. Still expressing BM for her. Heard some say will indue contraction??? Then some say later the fetus in the womb not enuf nutrients??? How ah?? Can advice??

BTW how do u all PM huh?? I very nerd one.. Sorry can advice??

jane,
hahahaha.... i think your son just need attn and wants to play. only too bad wrong hour of the day! my son is getting cleverer. wants to play. but seems he responds more to my ten yr old nieces than to adults. likes to be carried. put down, will cry.

kkf,
thks.

bena,
the best thing abt gg kkh is that you know their medical team is one of the best and experienced in SG. TMC is very good also but i dunno how much is the bill there. Private may not be so subsidised, is it? SGH cost ok, but I met a mummy in KKH who had her twin babies in SGH and one transferred to kkh due to heart operation. only one surgeon can do that op in kkh, i heard. so the mummy shuttled between sgh and kkh. v tiring... luckily din stay long. Quie quick as lungs not so bad.

mummylian,
if you stressed abt it, maybe shud stop? cos stress may have more effects than the bfdg itself. i read in an article that yes, bfdg can trigger uterine contractions, but it is still safe to breastfeed when you are pregnant. maybe cos the uterine contractions is minimal?? if your gynae says ok, despite your history of preemie twins, shud be ok, rt? You just try eat more nutrients lor...

to PM, you just click on the blue nickname on the left column. on the next page that pops up, there is a line at the bottom that says 'click here to PM whomever that you click earlier'.

Bena
I saw a drop of blood when I went to the loo. That was the sign.
They found out I had dilated 1cm. I was not allowed to go home and had to be on CRIB.
The intravenous was the last resort to prevent further contractions.

In my personal opinion, public hospitals such SGH, NUH and KKH have the expertise and world class equipments to support premature births.
I've not seen the NICU at pte hospitals and hence i cannot comment.
The team of neonatologists and nurses at KKH NICU/SCN is excellent!

I dun think a pte gynae is allowed to deliver in KKH.

Cost - To give you an indication, my twins stayed in KKH for about 3.5 mths and the bill was S$50K. They were under C class. The bill will varied depending on the drugs administered, length of stay and surgeries required.

Did you manage to contact your gynae?

Lindah
Your boy slept from 1am to 10am!
Hey.... Lucky you!

Jane
Singing! So cute.

kkf
Just realised your pregnancy was a difficult one too. Wei da Mummy!

Bena
KKH has other medical and surgical specialties such as Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Opthalmology, pediatric surgery etc.
Everything is under one roof.
For instance, the neonatalogists take care of the medical aspect of my boys. The Opthalmologists checked their eyes. The pediatric surgeons performed hernia surgeries on them. The Cardiologist ensured that their hearts are functioning ok. And finally, the plastic surgeon 'fix' my younger boy's nostril.

Jess
What is puppp?

Jacelyn
I am not sure abt the cake cutting.
Well, maybe u have one cake per session.
Session one - Twin 1 cut. Session 2- Twin 2 cut.
happy.gif

Mummylian,
Me oso not sure if can continue bfdg?what did yr gynae say?is it the same gynae for yr ger?maybe you can call kkh lactation consultation and ask them if can continue..

on the other hand, bfdg is good but yr ger is more than 6 mths corrected age already right..so now can get her food source from milk etc and semi solids.....

Bena,
I fully agree wif mich that kkh's nicu and scn are the best in spore...sgh and nuh are equally good...

with regards to cost, my son spent 5 months 1 wk in hospital..majority of time in nicu ...the total bill was about slightly less than $32k..

the bulk of the cost wld be at the beginning where they hv to run tests, medicines etc later on it wld just plateau off from there...

hi kkf - your boy does that...i wonder why hum. oh oh oh...i hope when my boy grow bigger...he don't do that ... really will want my life.

lindah -- ya, he hehe, as he grow bigger, very soon very soon...he will be singing too (like my boy) haha...now my boy ah, everything also want to tear apart (scary :p). cannot tear he will knock and bang babg...

mich - does your two sing when they younger too? (babbling stage), i call him singing cos...got high and low pitch keke...

Bena Neo,

maybe u can chk if ur gynae can go to Mt A? it's cheaper than TMC. dun think ur gynae can go into KKH, but at least Mt A is cheaper. tat's my case. supposed to b @ TMC, but switched to Mt A to reduce cost. another advantage is, jut in case ur bb needs to b in NICU, the NICU @Mt A is less crowded & ur bb will hav the full attention of (almost) all the nurses there.

Dear Mummies,

Thank you all for so much advice..I really find this thread very encouraging and supportive and when I saw the table of details of your babies and the number of days they spent at birth, I can't help but admire all you mothers here for pulling through the initial difficult period to have healthy babies now.. I was very touched when I saw the pics of all your babies..they all look so angelic and beautiful.

kkf, Mich, Lindah, Costa and Disneymickey,

Actually after taking nifedipine, I find that I get breathless. Doc says that weighing the risks and benefits, I have no choice but to take it. So now daily, I stay at home and monitor my contractions every minute. If it gets worse, doc says I should see her immediately and get the ventolin drip and Dexamethasone injections to strengthen baby's lungs. She will also see me weekly to check for cervix dilation. She said that she will transfer me to KKH if I deliver before 34 weeks. But if I can hold it till after 34 weeks, she might just keep me at TMC as she said babies born after 34 weeks may need just 1 week's stay in NICU. Nevertheless, I'm sure it will be costly even for a one-week stay. Now I'm just hoping for the best and preparing for the worst.

Mich,
Btw, what is CRIB? How much time did that drip buy you? Was the S$50k u spent in cash? Really a lot of money...

kkh,

Do you mind searching out the name of the anti-contraction pill you took? So it is actually possible to deliver in a pte hospital and have baby transfer to KKH? But wouldn't the rate be non-subsidised too since you are treated like a pte patient?

Costa,

The S$32k u paid was also cash?

bena,

my bill is 30+k for 5 mths. if i am not wrong, for NICU, it's about $400 per day. so if one week in NICU, still not so bad. my son was in NICU for 3 mths. SCN a lot more affordable compared to NICU. All of it is paid from medisave as medisave can claim up to $450 per day. as mine and hubby's medisave ran out, my sis let me use hers. apparently can. but we had to bring our BC as proof that we are sisters.

Bena
CRIB Complete rest in bed.
The drip managed to prolong the pregnancy for about 2 wks plus. Was on oral medication too at the same time. I cannot rem the name. Something that starts with Axxx?
We paid through medisave.

I know of a 25 weeker preemie who was born in Gleneagles and requested to be transferred to KKH after staying for a week in Glen.
KKH accepted the transfer but the child has to be B1 or A class rate. (cant rem exactly which rate did KKH state)
The parents went to their MP for help and finally KKH agreed on B2 rate.
I was told KKH will access all on a case by case basis.

Jane
They only make babababa or squeaked with delight when they are happy.

Mich,
Hi,finally got someone notice my question, thanks, but i still haven decide yet, my friend say dont do 2 time, i am very luan lei. maybe i do at mcdonald celebrbation wth cake on their actual birthday date, and on their lunar one which wth family member one only pray, never cut cake. how you think?

Bena,
Mine was paid thru Medisave fm my hbs and my account...

For me,i was staying in B2 (i cant remember the exact class)..its five to a rm no tv and no personal telephone line...and after i gv birth to my son...i wanted to downgrade to C class for myself but the social worker said no need..so i downgraded for my son and myself continued in B2 class for another 2wks...

if yr kid is okay, may not need to stay so long and costs may not be that expensive if not for long...

maybe as the pregnancy continues smoothly and not much threat of such premature labour, then you can continue like wat yr gynae says...

hi mich...no ah, he not only baba ah..he ah, eh, or, wu, du,... and dunno what. ya, he giggle? when very happy too. laugh non stop one...

jacelyn...erh...abt cake...i really don't know. but i think for lunar one don't need (cos so called chinese?? hehe)...

bena - i was all the way in C class when in KKH...my bill came up to abt 15K all by medisave.

Jacelyn
Do what you feel comfortable. I think that is most important.
Lunar Bday Maybe you prepare red eggs in replace of cake.
Enjoy the preparation!
happy.gif

Thank you, Lindah, Mich and Jane. Luckily can pay by medisave.. else faint. Pardon my ignornace but what is SCN?

Costa,
Ya, I really hope I can 'tong' as long as possible. Now eating more to pile on baby's weight. It's like a race against time.

hi bena...continue to tong and do chat with us often. here there is very strong support. just a while more. don't worry too much about money etc right now.

SCN = Special Care Nursery :)
