''Jia You'' and you gonna Win the race.

Dear janet,
hope U do share on ''Backache'' here! I only felt backache occasionally at the waist .. but the main is at the shoulder and neck area causin ME a bad Migraine and i believe it's due to gluing to the computer screen too much (since my maid has helped me to take care of daily feed and housework).
do you Do any form of Exercise like the one suggested by swimming instructor?
My mom-ilaw who used to take care of my2000 yr born son now visits physio-therapist becos she's now chronic pain stage ... and spending tons of money at TCM for her usual Giddiness spells.

FamilyFirst,
I have this shoulder and neck ache now too. In short it is driving me nuts. Buying lots of Salonplas to stick on the shoulder and neck area too.

hi hi, tml school reopens!
somehow me feeling veri ganchong again!! plus my boy gg for his playgroup also!!

re:learning lab
wen, u sending X there?

Hi Mummies,
It's back to school 2moro.

Dorothy,
I am feeling kancheong too...a relief to hear that you are feeling the same although not a good thing. Body aching, don't know if it's due to some form of stress.

Hey dor! yes...X starting class at TLL this week. He is really excited coz they gave out this cool-looking student card that looks like a credit card. I guess it makes the kids feel all grown up ;p

I'm feeling kinda nervous about school reopening too...must gear up to manage this type of stress again. After reviewing my boy's areas of weaknesses from 2009, I came up with a '2010 strategy' that will hopefully achieve my targets set for his academics ;p

Wen,
I have been rather nervous (ironically son is not in P1 but P4 this year) for the past few days...couldn't sleep until 12+
sad.gif

Yesterday, I was telling hubby I've been so relaxed that I cannot gear up for the stress ahead. Hubby told me I will be, ONCE his school time-table is out.
Went through his P4 Eng workbook to see what will be taught. Have a younger child in K2 due for P1 registration. So, next year will be 'double dose' of stress.

Wow, wen,

'2010 strategy' - I wish I have your enthusiasm. I always tell myself I'll come up with some strategy but so far it's been 空城计。

My kid didn't make it for the GEP but the school is nice enough to round up those who passed the first round and put them in the same classes, so it's some form of consolation for me. I hope that the school's (and the teachers') effort can make up for this lazy mother's lack of effort in teaching her own kid.

Rains,
Gotta have enthusiasm bcos the kids are still young and in primary school.

My son didn't make it pass GEP. I don't think you are lazy lah...every child is different. I believe you and your child have done what you can. My son's form teacher is expecting, so I guess there will be a change of teacher after June.

Janet,

Sometimes I can't decide if I'm the lazy one or my kid. I shove her the assessment books and ask her to do. Then I go away to play my computer game, watch tv or rest. Later I realise she's gone to nap or read storybooks. I'm so impatient I find it a pain to sit down and look at my kid do work, especially when she's also very slow in doing work.

When I sit down with her, she expects me to feed her answers. But when I go away, she doesn't do work.

Rains,
It is hard to face the child when kids do their work...honestly I do not remember my mum doing that either. But then, there wasn't pressure like now.

When my son was in P1, I literally had to sit beside him. When I leave the room to drink water or answer a call, he is standing right behind me.

I used to sit beside my older boy when he did his work in P1. Then I noticed that he couldn't do it independently when I had to teach the younger one. So since P2, I try to reduce his dependency on me by giving him bite-sized work and checking on him regularly. By P3 he was better at doing work independently, though he ocassionally gets jealous when I spend more time coaching the younger one. Now he prefers that I write down what he has to do for the day in a diary and he decides when he does them instead of following a home time table. And if he does his work properly I will give him little rewards. However, kids being kids, sometimes he will grumble or sulk when he has to do work....

Jess,
I am learning to hand over the responsibility to my son. For the past 3 years, I've been planning his CA/SA time-table. It's time to teach & guide him how to plan a revision time-table, starting with CA1. This way, he will know and learn what the consequences are. Furthermore, I've got a younger one to coach.
May I know what rewards do you give him?

I still help him to plan his time but in just broad guidelines because I realise that giving strict timing like what they have in school is sometimes very difficult to adhere to and he gets upset when he cannot complete his work. And if he has a lot of homework for the day, I will reduce or remove my work set for him.

In terms of rewards, I allow him to play computer or Wii or NDS or watch TV or bring him outdoors to sweat it out.

I kept up NDS and Wii just b4 school started.
He has homework this year, and needs more time bcos it's tougher.
I really want to learn from you how to plan his timetable. After the year-end hols, I am having back-to-school anxiety prob. Ironically I thought the back-to-school would be great bcos I get some peace when kids go to school. I freaked out last night bcos I couldn't sleep (for past 1 week at night).
Strict timing can hv adverse effect bcos it's frustrating to follow. Will adjust his work schedule too. THANKS
happy.gif

I restrict Wii to 45 min per session and NDS is only for weekends. But he doesn't play much of NDS these days because he doesn't have new games. For Wii, we play only sports and driving games, so I think it is ok.

As for sleeping habits, we started going back to school day timing since the beginning of last week and they seem to be coping well, waking up when the alarm clock rings at 6.30am.

Oh I see, so the anxiety is self-induced lah.

I can only try to get my kid to sleep 'early' - it's not very early still. I want her to sleep at 10pm, which is still not early enough, but she often drags till 11.30pm. She would still read storybooks when I go away.

Wen,
You also zombie this week? I think I asked for it. But will go easy on myself till end of this week b4 starting his daily schedule.

Jess,
I think I will allow my son to play Wii once a week since his school work is getting tougher...an incentive and reward. Your son's school is near home ? Waking up at 630am is very late for my son, even though we stay 10 min walk away.

Rains,
I allow my kids to watch the show from 10-11pm as a form of relaxation and also exposure to Mandarin. We like HKG dramas.

Jess,
My son usually plays Wii sports and Mario Kart. As for NDS, he got bored with it bcos he doesnt have new games. Besides, it's a strain on his eyes.

My children's school is just 3 bus stops away and they need to be in school only by 7.40am for silent reading and class starts at 8am. They sleep between 9.30-10pm and I do not allow them to watch TV after 9pm on Sunday to Thursday. As they have about 9hrs of sleep everyday, they do not take afternoon naps at all.

OIC...my son has to be in school b4 715am.
My kids must have their afternoon naps esp my younger one. 830-10pm is revision time.
I didn't know about school starting class at 8am, but do the kids dismiss late, like 2 or 3pm ?

My sons' school is a single session school. Classes end at 1.30pm. My children bathe and have their lunch by 2.30pm. Then they rest for half and hour and do their homework etc.. from 3 - 5 pm.

So, lessons still end at 130pm even though school starts at 8am. That's nice. I thought school will end later, since it starts slightly later than most of the morn session ones.

Oh I thought most schools end earlier at 12.30 or 1pm because they start earlier.

My nephew is in the afternoon session in another school and he goes to school for only about 4 hours on some days!

Wah, I never knew there are schools in Singapore that start at 8am. The schools I know start at 7.15am and end at 1.30pm.

Any mummy has taken your kid/s to Tokyo Disneyland and sea?

Jess,
4 hours on some days ? That's cool.
When my son was in P1/2, he had to be in school at 1215pm and dismissed at 645pm.
It really depends on the principal then.

Mummies,

I feel so vexed. Sometimes I can't help but wonder if my kid and piano got no 缘份. She's been learning piano for quite some time and it seems to me something always happens to interrupt her piano-learning.

This time round, her cca falls on friday and it turns out that her piano teacher only comes in on friday, so she'll need to change teacher again.

We all know too well how changing teachers disrupts learning, and everything from managing expectations and learning and teaching styles have to start from scratch. Each time she changes a teacher, the teacher would tell me her exam has to be pushed back (bcos they are starting her afresh). Push for so many years already.

The money I've put in to buy the piano, tune the piano, engaged tutors doesn't see any fruit.

I thought it quite a waste this time round bcos the teacher is really patient and does seem effective for my kid. It didn't occur to me that there'll come a time that she can't meet our timing and so I never got her contact from her, and the school refuses to give it to me.

rains

Usually teachers must sign contract with music school & there would be a clause that they cannot take in students from that school for a certain period even after they left. Teachers would need to pay penalty if discovered by music school. Hence most teachers would decline engagement by existing or even ex-students

How about switching CCA then?

rains

By the way, the replacement teacher should continue from where the existing teacher stops since your dd is still in the same music school. So may not be as disruptive

Rains,
Next week, my son has to choose a CCA. I hope he chooses one which is just ONCE a week. Otherwise, he wont have much time to revise his work.

mornings, ladies!

so fast hor... week 2 already!
i saw my gal schedule for the 1st term! +faint+
other than mon,she need to stay back in school til 4pm!

really no life!

re:tokyo disney
rains, not yet! but i been there myself! loves it!

yawnyawn,

Wah, you are so well-informed! How did you find out about music teachers signing such a contract with music schools? Let's hope the new teacher continue from where the ex-teacher stops and not say things like 'she's not ready for the exam.' again.

The school's ccas all fall on Thurs and Fri, with Fri the main cca day. Very few are on Thurs.

Janet and other mummies,

Has any of you thought about getting the kid to use cca for dsa? I was thinking of getting her to try this out and that's why I asked her to choose the current cca. However, I also have the worry about the need to stay back in school for two days when she reaches P6 for SYF.

dorothy,

Why is there a need to stay till 4pm on almost daily basis? What classes do they have?

I thought of tokyo disneyland as a vacation destination for june, then I realised that June is the rainy season. I was thinking of going in March then, but I am not sure if it's a good idea. My kid hasn't taken her exams yet then. It will be reward-before-results again. Sigh! So might not realise after all!

rain
Like to know what does ''use cca for dsa'' mean.
-- need to update to know what in ?

My son is equally clueless and they just join any activity as long as their friend take part.

familyfirst,

Oh, I'm not sure if I got it right either. I meant if my kid does well in the cca, and the cca wins medal for the school, does she get to leverage on this to dsa into her choice school?

rains, family first

Firstly, must 'bio' which secondary school you have in mind. Then look up that school's CCA list. Based on my brief research, Guzheng seems to be a popular CCA for DSA. If your kids good in Maths, Maths Olympaid is big bonus

rains

We wanted to engage my dd's music teacher to teach at our place. She will be leaving the music school a few months before my dd's exam. She told us about this clause & explained why she won't be able to teach my dd even after she left the music school

yawn yawn,

But it shows that that tutor has integrity lah.

Mummies,

Do your kids use electronic Chinese dictionary? Which one do you get for your kids - Besta or Creative?

Rains,
I got my son the Besta one...supposed to be allowed into exam hall. But I got another one which has more features last Dec.
Understand there are supplementary lessons almost everyday in P6.

Still thinking which CCA to choose.

Dorothy,
Stay back in school until 4pm 4x a week ? That's crazy! Your daughter in P4 only.

Hi Janet,

Can you share why Besta and not Creative huh? Creative one can also be used in exam hall.

Re: CCA
Did you ask your kid which cca he likes?

My boy started his CCA this week. His Chinese electronic dictionary is Creative brand...bought when he was in P2...seldom use. I intend to get him a higher end Besta model for home use.

Rains, we've been to Tokyo Disneyland few times & Sea once...personally I prefer land. Almost everything is narrated in Japanese though. March is end winter...I like it. You can see how cold it was from my FB pic ;p June is indeed rainy season and weather starting to get warm so March is still better.

rains/janet,
ya loh

below r the her schedule
1)tues-chinese supplementary lesson - 3.20pm
2)wed-malay n buddhist lesson til 3.20pm
3)thurs- house practice - 3.30 to 5.30pm
4)fri-band practise-1.30 to 4.30pm
5)sat-band practise-8-12pm

stress hor

my gal got her besta in p3..can use in exam?

wen,

March is also cold ah? I thought March would be better since June and Dec are not exactly good time to go. My girl and I can't take coldness. Genting at 15 degree is already too cold for us. And I worry about her asthma if it gets too cold. March cold, June rainy, December cold. Like that how to ever go there?

You're special in your preference huh. Most people tell me they prefer sea.

Dorothy,
Really heavy schedule for a P4. 2 days for cca somemore, and so many hours - 7!

For Besta, only the model 'All pass one' can be used in exam.

I just went to popular to try to buy an electronic dic for my kid and it turned out that all stocks are out. My kid wants the pink Besta so we'll wait. Actually I'm quite tempted to get both Creative and Besta. Creative got a 'shortcut' for finding 成语, while Besta is a newer model and lighter and got a button for showing you the 笔划. But someone on the net said it's better to stick to one for familiarity during exam, which to me is important as well.

Aiyo, which one is better lah?

I also bought the creative dictionary since P2 and he has been using it happily. But now I have been training him to use the book version because I think it is more useful in exams.

I have also just bought the English electronic dictionary because his teacher expects them to bring one to school daily and the book version is too heavy and bulky. This year, his bag is much heavier - about 5kg each day!

My son also came back with the cca form yesterday. He is interested to join the Entrepreneur Club which is only once per week. Not sure about his supplementary classes schedule yet.

Dorothy,
Is house practise compulsory for all students. Band training is usually intensive, not unexpected to be twice a week...What instrument is she playing?
