Low Milk Supply

Hi,

I gave birth to my son last mid september but he was premature. Only 33 weeks and 1 day. My milk did not come at all. He needed to stay in the NicU for 7 days. And I was pumping then. My milk was drops until it became 10ml. When he came home, he wont latch on because he is used to the bottle from the hospital plus his mouth was so small and my teat is big.

Eventually we were able to latch on his first month. He sucks for a few minutes and then sleeps a few minutes and is very fussy. I needed to supplement because he feeds 40-50ml of formula. But my milk is not enough for him.

Anyway I have tried powerpumping. Tried fenugreek. Mother's milk tea. Morangga tea. Morringa capsules. Iron supplement. Calcium supplement. Lactation cookies. Phew!

Now my milk had gone down again. From 180ml to 90ml or less. I am again trying yo build up my supply. By the way he latches on for atleast three times a day. Sometimes I can latch him on because he becomes super fussy because of hunger.

I want to increase milk using domperidone. My last resort. Havent seen the gynae yet. But I have a box of mottillum here. I am wondering if any of you took domperidone without doctor consult? Can you continue to breastfeed/pump if you are taking domperidone?

Hope to hear from you. Thanks!

Did you try drinking papaya fish soup? Black bean soup? Peanut soup? Are you eating well and resting well?

I havent tried any of those soups yet. Eating well I think so as I am gaining weight haha. Resting well ...mmm... I get to sleep when baby is sleeping at night. But in the morning I cannot sleep because baby wants to be carried as it is noisy upstairs because of construction.

I dont know how to make those soups.

You can google for these recipes

Green papaya and fish bone soup (most popular due to its fast acting effect of promoting lactation), pork ribs with black beans soup, steamed tofu with egg and minced chicken. Eat more protein. It is good for promoting lactation.

Also, MUST DRINK ENOUGH WATER.

When pumping need to relax.. drink lots of water throughout the day. Imagine the baby face when pumping will help to produce more milk.

Thank you for this. Will try it this weekend

Hi Trisha,

Maybe you wanna try Super Chlorophyll?

Super Chlorophyll contains chlorophylin, concentrated from the highest grade of alfalfa.

This water-soluble product is naturally flavored and is different from other chlorophyll products on the market because it contains a higher concentration of chlorophyll. Super Chlorophyll is the concentrated mineral-center of the alfalfa plant. It yields health benefits above and beyond those received from simply eating vegetables.

Hi Trisha,

You can get it from me. I'm now using it as well and has been total-breastfeeding my boy for 6 mths so far. I pm you the details? :)

my supply was low too from begining, as I was total breastfed, my son's jaundice even got worst cos of dehydration due to insufficient fluid. Thus, I need to bottle fed him to ensure he got enough supply. Thus from there, he refused to latch on, machiam I wanna kill him when trying to let him latch lol.

What I did was I drank a lot of fluid, be it soup or water. I even bought a big bottle think 3L and put beside my bed, made sure I finish the water everyday and refill. And I pump and pump, I pump 1 hour for every 3 hours during the 12 weeks maternity leaves. And it works, my son only supplement milk powder for less than may be 2 weeks or so and thereafter, he was on total breastmilk again, although he didnt latch on. I never even dare to dream that I can even stock up for more than 1 month supply after his daily feeds.

My milk got lesser after 9 months or so, guess cos I did not pump so diligently due to work commitment. Thus, after I consulted doctor, I was on domperidone when my milk supply drop. I managed to breastfeed him until 1.5 yrs old, although didnt hit my target of 2 yrs old but I feel proud of myself cos 1st one, only managed to tahan till 10 month old only and was with formula supplement since 1 month old.

So my advise is, drink more water and soup, pump more beside latching.

Hi Mummies,

I am a mummy with 2 kids - went through the tedious yet rewarding breastfeeding journey... And managed to discover natural ingredients to boost my supply via lactation cookies. Now I'm doing this for mummies who are interested to explore this option, and have also managed to obtain good reviews. Lactation cookies are still not common in Asian countries and I've also done quite a number of adjustments (which also included letting a group of mummies testing the cookies) before deriving to my current cookies. Feel free to check this out at www.milkoflove.com. Thank you and feel free to contact me if you have any queries.

Hey there. I remembered when I was breastfeeding there was a period when I got almost totally isolated from the outer world. That was winter, I still was recovering, my dearest one nearly always wasn't at home and I felt depressed and so alone. My milk dropped fast and my baby rejected any formula in a bottle. Massaje, pills, drinking water and healthy eating have a little result. But once my dear get back home early and apologized.

That was a strange and wonderful evening but that turned other side. He started to come back home earlier and spend more time with me. I was glad when milk supply returned but didn't know why. Only recently I've found this topic and was surprised because loneliness and bad mood could influence me badly. And sadness is stress for organisms too. Avoiding stresses is necessary not only for pregnant but for feeding mums too.
