AUTISM, ADHD, ADD, etc - SUPPORT GROUP!

Hi luv, thanks for your referral. I'll drop by Sonshine later this week.

Caramel, I totally concur with what you have said. It's been financially draining for me and my hubby and sometimes it seemed that we can only pay for basic EIPIC for my son. However, we continue to pray and believe that if God gift us a special person like my son, he would provide for him as well. And no sooner than we had that belief it kept us going and going. My dear mother turns up at my door with some savings when she heard that I wanted to rent out one room for some financial relief. Some months later, my husband got lucky and won some money at ToTo. We put all these into my son's therapy and continue to believe that there's light at the end of the tunnel. That's how we had the means of paying for his one year k4k and now ABA.

I totally understand the frustration going through with the daily grind with our special needs sons. I used to be very demanding with him and saw not much results. However, when I decide to work flexi hours and work together with my son in his therapies, I saw that my son really trying hard for himself, I began to understand that the best way of him learning is to walk together with him, encourage him when he gets frustrate and cheer him on when he improves. I see more results when I comforts him and less when I yell at him. It has made me a better person too. I sing Amazing Grace with my son every day :)

Mummies, I m so happy to hear that all of us hv received God's grace. Our family just accepted God into our lives n my son enjoys his Sunday class. It is also through God's strength n grace that we can continue to press on and see every challenge as a trial that God is putting us through.

Hi Momto3, I'm glad you like the song too :) By the way, I read in another thread that your son go to AAS Simei. I'm thinking of sending my son to AAS Clementi so that they are more focused on his autism-related issues. He is at SPD currently and there are kids of different needs placed with him especially speech delay.

Could you share your experience/view of AAS EIPIC programme and teaching staff?

Hi mummies,

Yes, it's really tough going through these mental ordeal. My boy has been throwing tantrums when tiongs don't get his ways. He only does that at home. In school he is ok.

He is verbal, in fact too verbal. He will spout rubbish when he is angry. Very often scream and yell for small little things. It's emotionally draining for us. We tried coaching him with maths, English but he totally shut off his mind. Jump up and down, throw pencils and refuse to learn.

Previoysly he attended mainstream cc.. according to teachers, he is ok except snatching toys from otger kids. but he is inattentive and active in class. Teachers classified him as naughty. But when teachers test him, he can reply. In fact,he knows alphabets, numbers, shapes and colours at 2 yrs old. Walk and talk at usual milestones. Except writing and coloring skills improving late last year.

Really dunno what is wrong with him actually.Hopefully we can get some advise from k4k this sat.

Angeline
My son used to be in SPD too but I pulled him out and placed him on AAS clementi's waiting list.

We got a vacancy for him at AAS Clementi within 3 mths but we have decided to give it up and let him continue with private EIPIC. You can try, the waiting time apparently is not very long.

Hi mommies,

Allow me to join this thread.

My 3 year-old boy is a late developer as he is born 3 mths ahead of EDD. He had a difficult start in life. Not walking properly as his muscles are stiff. Attending EIPIC at Yew Tee. And recently started wearing splints to correct his walking.

I have to stop working to look after him full time. But really need to put him in a CC so that I can return to work and for him to catch up with his peers. He was turned down by two CCs who are not able to handle him as he can't sit still or walk properly, need to wear shoes both indoor and outdoor. Visited another CC that has vacancy today, and I think my boy will become the teacher's headache. May have to give up the vacancy totally.

Are there any CCs catered to taking care of special needs children? I know of a few that will take in children with special needs but the teachers are not trained to take care of such children. Agree with Caramel that the governement should look into this group of children too. Not just give us baby bonus to have babies, but to support us when our children fall out of the norm. Going to "friend" LHL and post in his FB about this matter.

Thumbs up to encouraging mommies here who have made me feel better after a disappointing day.

hi cindy
u may want to try weecare & check with them
what condition is your boy, my boy has GDD currently at Epic

Hi Cindy
Most of the CC will not be able to handle special needs children especially with the high ratio they are having.

One of the centre (Christine Kindergarten) I visited did suggest that someone (Maid/grandparents/yourself) need to be with the child in school.

My son is with Cherie Hearts and he is hyperactive and unable to join the class, the in charge is helping me to find a "Shadow Teacher" to handle him and prompt him to learn together with the class. The fees will be borne by parents.

Hi teenie,

My boy is slow in development. I find him a bit of ADHD though not diagnosed. Which Eipic is your son attending? Is he showing improvement? My boy loves to attend Eipic at Yew Tee. Will google for "weecare" later. Thanks!

Hi Louise,

Yes, the word "shadow teacher" keeps appearing in the CCs that I spoke to. As my boy is wearing splints, they are worried that he will fall, Yet he loves to run around, not able to sit still like the rest of the class. Cherie Hearts is so kind to help you find one shadow teacher. Just Kids at Bt Batok hinted us to find my boy another school on Day 2 and on Day 4 my boy was "kicked out" of the school. The teachers there cannot handle him.

Anyway, I managed to sms the show on Ch8 last night regarding government to build CCs for special need children. Half of my msg appeared. Hope the gvt will look into this. Else this small group of children and the parents will always lose out to others. The medicial fees for all therapies are so x and still rolling. Only we know how much a burden it is to raise a child who is different from the rest. Well, will post on Goodmorning Singapore FB regarding this too. Yet to friend LHL.

Lucky to find this thread to get some encouragements and comfort. So stressful and depressing to see my boy clever yet different and not accepted by the majority.

Hi,

Brougt my boy to K4k for assessment today. They mentioned he is generally ok. However he has problems with joint attention, auditory senses and behavioural issues. Furter more, he need to strengthen his vocabuary and comprehension skills. These needs to be corrected before going to primary school. They believe with proper coaching, he can improve quite well.

They recommend I send him to the AMK branch about 2-3 times after his morning kindergarten session.thy have sessions to correct his problems. This pose a problem in terms of logisics for me as nobody can bring him there. My mum needs to look aftermy younder one as my helper cant really manage the kids yet.

my hubby and I were thinking if we shld place him full day at K4K integrated kinder program instead from 9 am till 4pm. Currenly my mum is having a hard time looking after my two boys. The elder one will always bully my younger one.By 4pm, guess he will too tired to cause too much trouble at home. However, like Angelin, our concern is tt he is verbal and high functional, not sure if its better for him to attend a mainsteam kindgarten instead. I will b paying a visit to the centre .

Hi ricorn, my boy is also high functional after putting him at k4k for full day, when reach home he is better and tend to slowly early too.. asbefore that he usually slowly at 1-2 am but.now he slp early... sometime s 8plus or 9 plus... latest 10 plus..

hi vivien,

How old is your boy? Does K4K provides adequate mainstrem program for the kids?

Any subsidies for K4K?

hi mommies,

Anybody heard or tried this Spectrum Learning or Relationship Development Intervention? Read about this in website but not sure about the effectiveness.

Hi! Ricorn, my boy is cureently 4 yrs old turning 5 this year. foR full day program, mainstream program would be taught. as for subsidy for kid that are enroll from feb 2013 onward, there will not be any subsidy as cel just updated their centre with subsidy.

their full day program are quite suitable for high functioning kids as no nap time given.

Yes,Cinday. Media may be one of the way to get help from the government.
Meanwhile, dont give up, keep calling the rest of the childcare, maybe those further away from your place.

Hi Cindy one of the kids I was teaching attended preschool by the park. The principal and teachers are very supportive and understanding. But you do need to engage your own shadow teacher though. You can try that out

hope this helps!

Been MIA for a while as weekends are my busiest time. Made a mistake of bringing my boy to McDonalds and had hot cake and milo. We had whole morning at Nature Reserve and afterwards we found that he refused to take afternoon naps and running all over the place. Too much sugar rush! We had to get my mom to take him for 2 hours because we were exhausted to keep up with him. Moms are the best !

I have gone ahead and visited the AAS or Eden Children Centre at Clementi last Friday and I got a warm welcome from the staff and teachers there. They provide 1 to 1 attention for some structured teaching and used both TEACCH and ABA. Good news 1) is that they have immediate vacancies as quite a few boys graduated. Good News 2) They also had a breakout room for the children to relax and I find this wonderful. Otherwise they may be too tired or overstimulated and meltdowns happen. Good news 3) They have a NTUC First Skool in the next block and we can consider enrolling him for afternoon if he is accepted at Eden. However, their ST have just resigned and they can't offer the service now. Nevertheless I'm so grateful as I was taking a casual look with my mom so that we know how far away the AAS is. I wanted to enrol at AAS in May but they told me that the waiting time is 9-12 months then. Let see how soon the transfer can be done.

Hi Cindy

I engaged a company for my son's home based ABA. I heard they offers shadow teaching. If you need more options, please pm me for the contact. But I am not advertising for them.

I know that it is tough going for everyone on this thread and I would like to share some thoughts that keep me going. Hopefully it will encourage you one way or the other

1) Have confidence in yourself and your judgement. You are the closest to your son and daughter and Mom know best. Even if we don't have all or the latest information, we go all out to find it for our dearies

2) We can do more (not in $ terms) in our loving words to our childrens and in our ever-enlarging patience and love for them

3) Look at the situation with a bit of humour - For example All these therapies are Advanced Tuition and we are paying ahead of other parents so that they are all ready for a bright future :)

Part of my prayers have come true and so will yours. I have to be an optimist for my son's sake :p

Praise lord
Thanks Angeline. I had just PM you about the contact.

This morning, my son had an assessment with The Children Therapy Centre. It wasnt a good start as the OT was late for 10mins.
Nevertheless, she is able to provide useful information on sensory needs child. Pray that every week, we will see improvements in our child.

Dear parents,

Hi All,

I wanted to share my experience with you. I have 2 kids , my son is autistic and my daughter has SM. It has been a painful journey for them in a mainstream school but thankfully after working from home, things have improved.

I have looked at all kinds of therapies and with my son not being good with travelling it has limited my options, furthermore i do not drive.

I recently enlisted the services of a home based therapist and the results have been great. My sons vocalisations to speech has improved and my daughter has been able to make small conversations. The sessions have been a blessing and the use of stimulus fading (using a therapy dog) has helped leaps and bounds.

The journey has become better but there is alot to do.We have been working on speech , confidence, self modelling with the therapist and these building blocks have been great.

Hang in there all

Has anyone consulted an ENT specialist? I'm looking for one for my son who has ASD. He failed his hearing test for one ear, and unfortunately doc at KKH is unable to diagnose cause or severity of hearing problem - I don't even know if there is any hearing loss.

If any of you have contacts to share, would be great. I'm planning to get a second opinion.
I can be reached at [email protected]

Have any other mothers experienced, harsh treatment of their kids outside mainstream schools. My son had a bad experience with a very inpatient teacher. This hindered his learning greatly.

I opted for home based therapy but i realise the "group" aspect isnt there. The therapist says they can organise group sessions but my son should be enrolled in a programme so he can practice the skills he is learning.

Anyone know of a good programme.

I would def continue with the home based aspect, it has been the most successful for us so far.

Hi Anna

You might want to try signing up a Social Skills programme for your son so that he can communicate and interact with other kids. My son's ST recommended it so that my son learns how to intereact in a group. The other kids will be ASD of similar level. It will be run by experienced STs to facilitate communication and learning. I understand that there is a long waiting list.

Just like to share that Eden Children Centre at Clementi has already contacted me regarding the assessment for my son last week and expected to start lessons in April. Yeah!

So far they have been very caring and professional.

Thanks odae for links to kiasuparents

Btw can I check if any of the parents here join a parents' support group in Singapore with meetups to share information? If yes, hows your experience so far

Hi All,

I recently started with Animal Assisted Therapy for my son.

I have to say, i was skeptical at first but the therapist explained to me the tasks and the underlining skill mechanisms behind them.

In 3 sessions, my son who is terrified of dogs, has come to be able to pet various parts of the dog, do lead exercises and also vocalise his actions.

The confidence building exercises, role playing and speech has shown progress in such a short time and i'm very excited.

The benefits of animal assisted therapy is picking up in the USA but not much here.

The therapist comes with a handler and the 2 of them have build a good relationship with my son.

Just wanted to share

HI all.

i am new to this.My younger one who is already 2.8years old who have difficulty in speech , minmium eye contact , throw terrible temper tantrum when he do not get his way and other signs that make us think that he has sign of autism.
we want to get his check soonest but was advise to go polyclinic to get a referral letter so that the fees are much affordable in KKH.

could someone please advise me the best and quickest way to get assessment first. once this done then i can worry about the next step. really desperate and anxious , would appreciate help on this

hi foo peipei, the fastest way to get a formal assessment and diagnosis is to see a private psychologist. if a formal diagnosis is not important to you, you can go for an informal assessment at most private early intervention centres in singapore. they should be able to assess your child and recommend what your child needs to work on.

hope this helps!

Hi all,

I realised i got a few messages from quite a few people but i can't send out PM's for some reason.

I wanted to elaborate on my experiences with AAT .

My sessions last 2 hours, the therapist started off with a free 2 hour session so they could gauge how long a session would be needed. My daughter took about 20 mins to settle down and my son almost 30 mins , with that - 1 hour would only be 30 mins (so i thought) but they do an entire hour regardless of how long my kids take to settle in
happy.gif
. The sessions are very structured, i get emailed an outline for coming session so i can prepare my son (he does not like surprises) on what is going to happen, and to my suprise, he is always excited when i mention the word dog.

The first session was a confidence building and touching various parts of the dogs, my son picked it up in 3 sessions, getting over his fear fast and initiates play on his own, my daughter has shown significant improvement. The touching progressed on to holding brush and vocalising and leading exercises too.

It has been a great treat for us at home, Saturdays are now a highlight and my son recognises a set of almost 15 new words that he has practised with the dog and moved on to practicing with me.

My email is [email protected] for those of you who want more information.

I am considering getting a dog for my kids now, hopefully it will be as well trained as the therapy dog .

Hi Pei Pei

I would suggest for your child to get some speech therapy at the same time as it take 3-6 months to get to see a doctor at KKH Child Development unit. Most of the time a child this old is often frustrated as he/she is unable to express themselves properly hence the temper and the tantrums and so on. I can share some speech therapists' contacts if you need. These therapists are usually experienced enough to identify some issues for your son in my experience with them.

Hi mummies,

My son started on OT twice a week 1hr for a month at K4K amk but has been crying throughout all 8 sessions. Today just started 2hr grp session at tpy branch and he is doing well. Some parents are putting their children there for 3hr Mon-Fri. I know consistency is important but also saw some parents alternate their kids between eipic program and mainstream childcare centres. Not sure if I should let him attend eipic mon-fri or try putting him in his elder brother's childcare together for the days that he's not going eipic. Any thoughts?

I would like to enquire if anyone can recommend a normal childcare center that accept special need kids n are very patient n loving to them? Preferable hougang sengkang or north, or central locations. Tks!
