Any good pre-nursery, nursery , childcare at yishun/sembawang?

Hi,

Can I check on the feedback on Star learners at Sembawang? I am thinking of sending my ten month old there. Understand that 18 month old is the minimim age they take in. How is ambience and syllabus like for kids as young as 18 months?

I intend to do this if I have my second child and I tot for 18 month, he might learn more in child care then being at home and easier for me and maid to cope too. But being a SAHM, I understand there is no subsidy right?

Just wanna find out more about feedback on this place etc.

Hope to hear from you soon.
Fern

yes yes i m putting my boy @ childcare at sembawang area too, so need ALOT feedback from mummies pls!!!

Fern, there is subisidary for non working mum at $150 instead of $300. same thinking, tout of starting out half day to prepare him, so if i have second 1, can convert him to full day while mum can look after newborn. And of course the pros of learning in school. but cons is sickly child =(. So i wan him to go half day first.

HI!

Check with you mummies, My son is now one year old. I have the intention to send him to a play group when he is around 2 and half to 3 to prepare him for Nursery. Looking into a christian playgroup cum nursery. Any good recommendation huh? Was looking at tumble tots. Is it good huh? I need one to build him a good foundation in both studies and play to prepare him for P1 in future. ANd For pri school I have already decided on Henry Park Pri school since its his dad former school and I heard its a pretty good school so he def need bulk up at a young age?

Any recommendations? One not too costly, good ambience, christian school and not too far form home where I live in Sembwang.

Hi,

anyone experience child care at Kidsville at Yishun blk 201? can share ?

How about Eager Beaver Schoolhouse and Lodge @ safra yishun?

and Carpe Diem above Yishun polyclinic

I've son about 2,3 years old. we're living in seletaris now. I'm searching for good prenursery with good loving teacher as my son can't talk yet.

Hi Happyface

i intended to enrol my son of 20mths to kidsville at Yishun Blk 217 since im staying at that blk... but i din really consider other childcares nearby due to convenience.. since my mil who is staying at blk 220 and will be looking after my unborn 2nd child...

Do you or anyone has any comments for Kidsville at Yishun Blk 217?

Hi jane,

FYI i've visited 3 ccc at that area yesterday. One of the ccc i've visited is star learners. I was there at about 5pm+. There's a outdoor playground just beside the hall but no kids are playing out there. I know its their free time activities for the kids during that time but what i saw was the teachers and all the kids are sitting on the floor watching tv together. Although star learners environment is quite good, quite spacious but i'll prefer the perform @ junior cos all the kids are playing outdoor and they don watch tv.

happyface, there is a thread abt eager beaver at http://www.singaporemotherhood.com/forumboard/messages/353635/893010.html

shirlyn, which is the 3rd cc tat u have visited?

when i talk to star learners, the i/c said that they will only let children educational vcd like hi-5, and not free-to-air channels like okto.

For perform@junior, how do u find the classrooms? Cos its closed-concept (each classroom is a room, not open concept), I find it abit claustophobic. But from what I heard, I think they have a more interesting curriculum as they incorporate speech and drama alot of times and even teach abit of malay and tamil on top of chinese.

Hi Bloom,

1st cc i visited His Little Kingdom Child Care & Development Centre near to Chong Pang. I don quite like this place cos its more like sending ur child to a neighbour's house. I saw 2 aunties playing puzzle with the children. I don know these aunties are the teachers or what. But i feel that there're like next door neighbour auntie coming over to help look after the children. Their concept is to let the child feels like going to the auntie's house instead of school. Another thing is that the cc closed at 6.30pm which i think is quite early and location is not very ideal.

2nd cc i visited Perform @ Junior. It's a 2 storey terrace house. The moment i reached there the place gave me a feeling that its very lively and all the children are playing outdoor cos at that time its their free time activities. Yes it's a closed concept. But what i see there is the rooms are for art and craft and the walls in the rooms are painted with pictures. The toddler classroom is on the 1st sty while the bigger children are on the 2nd sty. They got a mini library and also a music area in the hall. Yes the supervisor told me they emphasis on speech and drama cos this is to prepare the child to progress on to primary school with more confident and can speak up more. Another thing she emphasis is that they want the children to learn while playing. They also got enrichment class which is like what u say. They teaches malay and tamil on top of english and chinese w/o additional charges. They even organise outing for the children. But one thing which i'm still guessing now is that the founder of the cc might be an indian cos the cleaner auntie there is also an indian. But on the whole i still find the place acceptable cos most of the children there are chinese. BTW i saw a teacher teaching an indian child with down syndrome in there.

3rd cc i visited Star Learners. The ctr is much more bigger than Perform @ Junior. I heard them playing Barney on TV cos my gal wanted to go inside the hall to watch too haha but after that they changed to other vcd. However i still feel that they should let the children do some other activities instead of watching TV cos while the children are sitting quietly watching TV the adult can also relax at the same time. Maybe they only let the children watch TV once a week or what i don know la. Just coincidence that i dropped by there at that time loh haha. I feel that the children are not so lively as compared to those at Perform @ Junior.

Anyway we've brought our gal along yesterday and she seems to be more attracted to Perform @ Junior. We've decided to enrol her there.

Wow, thx for the info. I'm also planning to enrol my girl in a Semb/ Yishun Childcare in Jan so have scouted a few. Will go Star Learners and Perform@Junior to take a look.

I've submitted the application to Perform @ Junior just now and my gal will start on next mon. Hopefully she will like this place and quickly adapt.

both my gals are in star learners. my eldest been there before when it was called poppet.

shirlyn, the time u went is not a good time.. that is when most parents/care takers go pick up the kids.. it depends on which level the kids are and they usually end all lessons by 5pm so they get the kids ready for pickup after.

i like star learners for the space and the teachers. i feel they speak proper english, not so much singlish.. that i encountered when i visited perform few yrs back. maybe the teacher has changed.

star learners actually have a lot of activities for kids.. where they learn and play at same time. e.g. water play, site visits and excursions. there are also computer and cooking lessons. computer classes where kids learn thru play, since k1. i feel the fees are reasonable too. of course there are extra curriculum u can enrol ur kids like speech and drama, abacus, gymnastic, and a few others.

anyway, most important is how u feel with the place and the sincerity from the teachers and principle. u need to experience that. also, go at the right time. busy times for the centers are usually 8+ to 9am, and 5+pm to 6pm so may not be so good.. classes usually start from 9am.

hope above helps!

I am also looking for a childcare for my daughter who is turning 18 months soon.

I am alsoconsidering perform@junior and star learners. Both centres have their stong points:

star learners:
a) systematic approach
b) have more variety and nutritious meals
c) discipline

Perform@junior:
a) learn thru play - more interesting
b) special curriculum
c) lively

I am really confused which to choose, can anyone advice?

Confused

Hi Irene,
Ya i know that's the timing for parents to come and fetch their kids. But i still feel that they can do some other activities rather than sitting there and watch vcds. U see lesson ends at 5pm and if i were to come and fetch my gal at abt 7pm then she'll be watching vcd for abt 2 hrs each day? This is my own opinion. But anyway it's my gal who chose the current cc haha.

Hi bellebelle,
Can understand how u r feeling now. Within this mth my gal has already changed cc 2 times. My gal dislike the 1st cc "my first skool" which is just opposite our blk. Now that we've enrol her to Perform @ Junior we see some improvement from her. Although she'll refuse to go in the morning but she's still willing to let the teacher carry her and she'll participate in the activities. Go and take a look at the cc first before u decide. Sometimes what u like might not be your gal's likes.

Hi Shirlyn,

Thanks for your reply.

I have brought her to both the centres and she seems quite ok for the both.

After much consideration, I have decided to enrol my daughter to star learners...because of the big space...I hope I have made the correct decision...if she doesnt like there, I will consider to put her to Perform@junior...

I haven't had a chance to see Perform@Junior, cos we went to see like 8-9 other CC already and so starry-eye liao.

But we finally shortlist 2- Star Learners and Shooting Star which are almost side by side.

We will bring Ah Girl for 1 day trial at both places then decide, so probably start in July.
happy.gif

Star Learners is $600 (FD) and $450 (HD) so will be $300 after subsidy for both FD and HD. Heard next yr will increase by $50.

Actually, I didn't find Shooting Stars expensive lei... their FD is $650, which is just $50 more than Star Learners. Also, I didn't find that Shooting Star ranked lower than Star Learners in terms of cleanliness.

But I do feel that it really depends on what type of childcare you want. Star Learners is like a big corporation- they have 100+ children (if I remember correctly) and their capacity is 200 or so. Shooting Star is much smaller, capacity is abt 50 and now they have 40+. So depends on whether you want something more homely or not. My MIL seems to prefer a smaller CC, but we have yet to bring her to see both places.

Jing, I was quoted $700 before govt subsidy for star learners!!!!! *fume* She also say they will not increase the fees in the near future.. *fume*

Really ah!!!

Err... could it be for different age group?

My Ah Girl is abt 20 mths, so will be less than 24mths when we enrol her.

Maybe your child is older?

on star learner's fees.. i had thought $600 was for kids that with them before the change of management from poppet? new student rate should be higher?

another consideration you mummies can check.. the license term. if they are granted 2 yrs license from mcys, then it usually means the center has good record, and good curriculum.

another is u can check on the cleanliness/hygiene by asking their rate of hfmd contraction?

have fun!

Hi Bloom,

I have checked the MCYS website, the price stated is $700 before subsidy.

Anyway, the supervisor, Nancy told me that they are charging $600 for the time being, maybe next year they will increase to $700.

Hi Joycelyn,

In terms of educational level of the teachers, I think Star Learners teachers also at least have a diploma, I did check with Nancy before.

I agree with you that Perform has an interesting curriculum but I still choose Star Learners because a bigger space is my priority.

BTW, if you register before 31 July 2009 with Perform, there will be 2 or 3 months free school fees.

Hi Felicia,

Star Learners and Perform do provide bus transport. However, I do not know the charges.

Hi Jing,

Please provide us feedback after you have sent your Ah Girl for the trial. Thanks Thanks…

bellebelle, i have also called nancy just now. she quoted me $600 :p

I should be sending my gal there.

Felicia, yes, tpt is provided (extra cost). You can call up SL's bus uncle/auntie for a quote (based on distance).

regarding perform @ junior.

I am very happy with them as my #1 is currently with them. For 18- 36 mth they will be in the same class. However the younger group will learn different things from the older group. They will do flashcards and a lot of art, singing and dancing for the younger group.

My gal is currently in the nursery class. They have reading programme and computer class. All these r already included in the school fees.

For K1 and K2 they are more academic. They do kumo style as well as flashcards. Reat assured that when your kid goes to Pri sch they have no problem adapting to the school. Their standards are very high.

They are very into speech and drama. They hv mini concert in June and a major concert in Dec. All students of all age group get to perform. This will boost their speech and confidence level.

I seen great improvement in my gal and hence without hesitation will put my son in the school as well.

Oh during the HFMD period the tchers are great. They email every one of us everyday for updates and also reaassurance to us parents. They also tell us what they do in school everyday. The teachers are really like a fren to us. It give me a very different ebvironement compared toother schools my gal attend. Btw this is her 4th childcare. Her previous 3 is Greenhouse Montesori, Kinderland and PAP... this is the best and i will put her there till she goes Pri sch.

They do enrichment programme during the school holiday as well thus not jus free play n free play which i encounter with the previous childcare. For all enrichment activities no added fees is required.

Hi Fun,

I have gone to visit Kinderland at Woodlands Civic Centre in May 2009.

First thing that I don’t like about this centre is – the children are eating cater food. I don’t think it will taste nice, and the pictures of the food they shown on the notice board don’t look appealing at all.

Secondly I visited the centre after the nap time, I saw the children had to drag the mattress across the corridor, and is quite a long distance and the mattress seems so heavy. I really pity those children.

I just felt that the whole centre is very untidy and messy. So therefore, I decided to enrol my daughter to Star Learners.

Bellebelle

Tks for your feedback!

I tried Star learners too, my son onli went there for the first two days (half day onli) and got a serious cough (due to his sensitive nose).. and den i pulled him out of the school right away.

After tat we switched to Pre-school 3 hrs class in Kinderland for already 5 over mths now. HB wants him to go back to Childcare as he feels tat son can get more disicipline from CC.

Tats why we are considering Kinderland's CC.

The very first CC he been to is Eager Beaver. Which the teachers are quite caring and attentive. But previously also becos my son has been having bad coughs after switching from toddler class to N1. We pulled him out too.

So now debating with HB abt whether CC is suitable for my son due to his health conditions or not.

Hi shirlyn_chew,

How is your gal in Perform@Junior? I went there today. The program does look for interesting than Stars Learner. But my concern is the space. It looks small.

Any mummy's who has brought their kid to perform@junior, can you advise if the space is a concern? I like the programs but is concern about the space..Thank You

linda
pls see my post above. My gal has been with perform@junior since last yr march. I am very happy with the place, the teachers, the curriculum. They do hv outdoor activities as u can see they hv outdoor playground as well as bicycles, riders etc for the kids to play.

areu putting yr kid there? my gal is currently 4 and is in the N2 class which they call apple leader. My son currently 16 mth will be joining in sep. How abt yr kid?

Hi lindatlc,
It has been a mth since my gal has joined Perform @ Junior. She's in apple champs class (toddler) and i've seen great improvement in her and as what ABCs' mummy has said the teachers there are just like friends to us and the cc gives me a more lively feeling. Starting when i was still considering where should i enrol my gal, i was just like u cos my concern is the space. But comes to think of it even though the cc have a big space, the kids still have to be in their own area according to their age group and i think Perform @ Junior is better than those cc under blk cos the space is much more smaller. Now my gal likes going there and in less than 2 weeks my gal has already adapt to the environment.

Shirlyn
Glad your daughter is adapting well. To me, curriculum and teachers play a more impt role than space. So long they still hv outdoor ativities such as play area and playground i am happy. :)

Shirlyn
how old is yr gal when u first enrolled her?

Hi ABCs' mummy,
My gal was 22 mths+ when we first send her to cc. Actually Perform @ Junior was her 2nd cc cos previously we enrol her in My First Skool which is opposite our blk but during the 2 weeks trial period we had a difficult time sending her into the cc. She simply refuse and struggle when she reached there. So we withdraw her from there and look for another cc immediately and that's when we found the current cc. During the 1st few days in the new cc although she'll cry in the morning when we left but at least she won't refuse or struggle.

Hi mummies, i am thinking of enrolling my girl to cc too. Was looking at My Little Campus & My First Skool but after reading this thread, Perform@Junior and Star Learner sounds good. What is the fee for Perform@Junior?

Wow, so glad i found this thread.

Hi Valerie,
I'm paying $420 for Perform @ Junior after subsidy. That time when i enrol my gal there, they've promotiom so U may call them for any current promotion.

Thanks shirlyn. Do they have any website? Any problem sending your kids if raining? Thinking of enrolling my gal to cc in December this year. Star learners seem to have 4 branches in Singapore and a website to refer to. Have yet to visit both cc but went to My first skool and my little campus and did not like the void deck environment. Can mummies share more on the programme of Perform@Junior & Star Learners? Thanks in advance.

Valerie
No perform@junior got no website but they r on facebook.

For perform@junior please refer to my earlier post. My dd has been with them for more than a year now. I hva no regrets and is gg to put my son with them too. FYI they have waitlist thus u nd to call them up and put on waitlist if u r interested as they are currently full until Jan 2010. U can call them at 67553626
