missycandy,
re: tonsils - u gotta look into the mouth and look right at the back directly - quite difficult cos the back of the tongue is usaally in the way. sometimes if they are laughing or more usually if they are screaming their heads off u can see more clearly. tts y drs tend to use a tongue depressor and its pretty unpleasant for bb's - so if its done its just done once so one looke is enough to tell. heh.
alternatively, sometimes u can tell if their throat is sore lah - they get a bit reluctant to eat and drink, or they look like they have some difficulty swallowing. usually if it's sore they will have a bit of temp as well. if its just swollen then they might just have some problems swallowing. and if the adenoids are also big, nose will get blocked, they breathe thru their mouths, and they can snore.
oh, and if the tonsils/upper throat region is sore, they can also claw at their ears cos the pain can typically radiate there
u can try to feel the neck, but quite often ppl (including some GPs who don't examine necks very often) feel the submandibular salivary glands and think they are swollen lymph glands or swollen tonsils - not very accurate if u dunno what to feel for ;p
ok. tmi liao. hope it helps tho
and hope kirsten is better!
