It's quite common for babies to get awakened when sleeping upright cos they get startled pretty often. Some people use the beansprout pillow to put over baby's chest to calm them. Doesn't work for my baby cos he doesn't like the sound that the pillow makes.
Alternatively you can sleep baby on his tummy, but must keep watch to make sure his nose is not covered. Or you can sleep baby on his side, hugging onto a pillow or bolster.
