d,
the worse part of the labour process for me was going w/out food and drinks. my labour was damn long at 17+ hours, so i had to take abt 3 doses of epi. not supposed to eat, but whenever the nurses went out, i would start to drink ribena and eat my museli bar. the first thing i did after giving birth was to eat watermelon, while they were weighing the bb and wrapping him up, hahaa.
min,
i think that as long as the mother is resolute, the hospital can't really interfere much. i had side effects from the epi, like puking and headaches on the first night. but wanted to latch on nonetheless. so for the first feed abt 1/3 hr after the baby was born, i was puking (watermelon, hahaa) into a container on my right side, and then latching on my bb on the left side. quite comical, now that i think of it. and i hate to entertain visitors too. told everyone i knew that i looked terrible and that they are not supposed to come and visit me till i was discharged, but in the end a few relatives and 2 friends still came. i didn't care, just latch on in front of them whenever the bb needed to drink. after a while, they would get the message and leave a bit earlier.
michele,
i would definately get postnatal blues if i did a confinement of sorts with my mum or mil too! had engorgement and fever once too, but as i was staying alone, i just popped a panadol and continued to latch on as usual
