I was reading all the postings on discipline today.. perhaps I m the least qualified person here to say anything (cos I can be seriously boh-chap) and also I know that I am lucky cos EJ is relatively easy.. but I really think there is no need to be too gan-cheong and too up-tight about discipline and development.
I ever posted here before.. I actually wish that EJ don't develop too fast. I have never tried to help him flip or crawl or stand or train him to grab things or feed himself. Everything he can do, it comes to him naturally. At times I do worry a bit cos I see all the babies here develop so fast.. but then after a while, my live-and-let-live attitude will take over. EJ can't wave goodbye, don't know who mummy or daddy is, won't really stretch out his arms for me to carry.. but I think it's perfectly fine leh. Slow then slow lor..so what if slow.. he has a whole life ahead of him for him to learn.
Maybe his IC teachers do try to let him crawl or stand but I don't think they are too conscious.. to them, they put him on the floor, but if he doesn't want to crawl they also won't try to make him.
For discipline, I am sure none of us mummies here want to have screaming toddlers on our hands.. but think again.. those that we have witnessed before in shopping malls, restaurants etc.. I am sure some of those mummies are really tearing their hair out too.. but they just can't do anything with their child. I am the type who believe that some kids are just born like that. I have a colleague who told me, her sister got 2 daughters. The eldest one is the terror in the family.. nobody could do anything at all.. they tried every method but everyone is just terrified of her.. the 2nd daughter is the direct opposite.. she is such an angel..just automatically guai guai, very sweet, very easy. So that's why I feel that, just as there can be easy babies, there can also be naturally difficult babies.. perhaps it's also part of their personality bah.. Another story.. my SIL 2nd son (now 10yrs old). When he was young (like 3yrs old).. I really "hated" that boy! He was such a terror.. screaming, yelling, kicking, stretching in a car ride.. and the mom (SIL) just let him be and pacify him all the way in the car.. at that moment, I wanted to give him a slap! BUT now, he is such a good boy! A polite, good, smiley 10yr old boy who says please and thank you. This real-life example really made me see and understand that children all go through phases.. just because we can't "teach" or make them learn when they are very young, it doesn't mean the kid is condemned and will turn out bad/rude/terrible.
I am not sure if my super-long post here is any advice or consolation to anybody (probably not!).. haha.. but I just want to say.. don't be too hard on yourself! No matter which method you choose, CIO, carry when bb cry, yell, beat.. just don't be too hard on yourself and on your baby.
