Morning Ladies,
Ya, Monday again.....
How many more Mondays we need to go thru till we give birth huh? Then can enjoy our maternity leave with the bb...
Starluster,
Hope the following will help to answer ur question:
JAUNDICE
Above 90% of our local babies here tend to be jaundiced to some degree, especially Chinese babies.
5 mg% or 85 mmol/l Very slight; jaundice just visible
12mg% or 204 mmol/l If the baby is under 3 days, treatment would be advisable
15mg% or 250 mmol/l If the baby is more than 3 days, treatment may be necessary.
Please note that the levels stated above are a rough guide only. A doctor may decide to commence treatment at different levels depending on the age, weight, and rate of increase of the bilirubin in a baby.
Cause of jaundice is important. A G6PD baby may have very high jaundice level by day 2, and require immediate treatment. Physiological jaundice that rises to a peak between Day 3 7 and then tails off, is not a source of worry. Breast milk jaundice or breastfeeding jaundice is usually not a cause of worry. However, if suspected breast milk jaundice reaches 20 mg % (340 mmol/l) and beyond, many itself does not result in brain damage, there is always the possibility that there are other pathological causes aggravating the jaundice.
Interruption of breastfeeding: if a doctor recommends an interruption of breastfeeding to see if the level will drop, a cessation of 48 hours is all that is required. If the bilirubin level drops very dramatically, that is strong indication that it is breast milk jaundice. After the drop, breastfeeding can resume. The level may rise again, but doctor and mother can monitor this, and appropriate response worked out. If the bilirubin level does not drop, it is pathological jaundice, and treatment will commence for the baby, and the mother can safely continue with breastfeeding.
If breastfeeding is interrupted, the mother should be advised to express her milk regularly e.g. every 2 hours, for 15-20 minutes on each time. This will prevent engorgement, as well as to keep the supply strong when the baby comes back to the breast after 2 days.
Three weeks is an important threshold for jaundiced babies, as by this time, he blood-brain barrier is formed, and the baby is protected from the danger of having bilirubin in the blood flow into the brain, running the risk of brain damage.
Actually if you had told the nurse in the hospitabl that u want to Total Breastfeed ur bb, no bottle will be introduce, they will spoon or cup feed ur baby, but then if the bb in the nursery, we do not know how the nurse feed the bb lah, so if really want to breastfeed, it's either u room in with the baby or check on the nurse frequently.
