Hi Mummies,
Saw something on the net tat may b useful for pacifying bb to sleep at night...

What science says about cry it out
As much as we all want our babies to sleep, most of us can't bear to hear them cry for long before they nod off.

But many experts say that a few tear-filled nights during sleep training won't do your baby any harm. The handful of studies that looked at the emotional impact of crying it out clearly showed better parent-child attachment after sleep training, says Mindell.

What's more, she adds, the studies revealed that infants who went through sleep training were more secure and predictable, and cried and fussed less, than those who weren't trained. Not only do babies seem to thrive on the routine, but like the rest of us they're often in a better mood after a good night's sleep or nap.

"We're fairly certain that sleep training doesn't have any long-term negative effects," Mindell says. "If you love your child and are a responsive parent and then let your child cry three nights in a row to teach her how to sleep, that's fine."

However, not everyone believes that cry it out is harmless. Robert Sears, a pediatrician and co-author of The Baby Sleep Book, which encourages sharing a bed with your baby, points to studies that suggest prolonged crying spells for weeks at a time can cause emotional trauma as well as physiological changes to the brain. But Mindell argues that these studies had nothing to do with sleep training they were done on children who suffered from long crying jags in general. Therefore, she says, the findings don't apply to a few teary nights with the cry it out method.

It's a frustrating impasse for parents. But no matter which side of the debate science weighs in on, no study or expert opinion can tell you how you should feel about the sound of your baby's wailing. That's why most sleep gurus agree that the decision to go with a cry it out or tear-free method is clearly a personal one.

Five sleep solutions that work
The review put these five sleep-training techniques to the test:
The full "cry it out" method. You let your baby cry herself to sleep without comforting her (also known as the extinction method).

The modified "cry it out" method. You let your baby cry but reassure her at regular intervals (also known as graduated extinction).

Soothing bedtime routines. You establish routines that help your baby wind down, then turn out the lights and don't respond to any crying.

Parent education. Before your baby arrives or right after, you learn about infant sleep and how to help your baby establish healthy sleep habits, such as putting her to bed sleepy but awake.

Scheduled awakenings. This rarely used tactic involves waking your baby before she would normally get up on her own. The awakenings get fewer and further between as you progress, until finally they're phased out altogether.

Unfortunately, the one popular technique the review didn't examine was co-sleeping (sharing a bed with your baby), since, as Mindell points out, no large studies have looked at how it fares in teaching babies to fall asleep or self-soothe at night.

The good news is, all five methods the researchers did look at cut down on bedtime tears and middle-of-the-night wakings. And while a few of the studies pitted one sleep-training method against another, no one method had an edge.

Finding the best method for your family
So which sleep-training technique (or combination of techniques) will do the trick for your night owl? The experts say let the following be your guidelines:

Consider your child's temperament
"If you can match a sleep-training approach with your child's temperament, you'll have more success and see quicker results," says Chicago pediatrician Marc Weissbluth, author of Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. "It's just like disciplining your child easygoing, adaptable children are easy to correct. A strong-willed, highly determined child, on the other hand, may need a tougher approach."

How does that translate into sleep training? In Weissbluth's experience, mild-mannered children can learn to sleep well with gentle, consistent parental consoling a no-cry or modified cry it out method. More determined babies, on the other hand, do better with full cry it out because parental consoling tends to prolong or even intensify the fight.

Bear in mind that your baby's sensitivity to stress should also be considered when picking a technique. "Children who have more resilient temperaments typically respond well to crying it out," Mindell says. "A sensitive child needs a slower approach." Robert Sears advises co-sleeping for the very sensitive baby, but adds that it won't work for all children. A baby who is easily stimulated, for instance, might find sharing a bed with her favorite playmates her parents too exciting to settle down and would probably do better in her own bassinet.

To determine your child's temperament, look at how your baby responds to new or stressful situations. Does she shrink back in fear and require lots of comfort? You're raising a sensitive plant. Does she take them in stride or recover quickly? You've got a resilient baby.

Take care of yourself
Parents who are depressed or upset are often unable to respond swiftly and sensitively to their child's needs. One study, published in the journal Child Development and Psychopathology, found that children whose mothers were chronically and clinically depressed had abnormal patterns of brain activity, suggesting that the children also suffered from depression. Seek advice about coping with postpartum depression, and talk with your caregiver any time you think you may be struggling with depression.

If you're feeling drained, find ways to divide the household and parenting responsibilities with your partner. If you're a single parent, surround yourself with people who can offer you help and support. And don't forget to treat yourself to some time alone once in a while. Being a parent especially an involved and active one is tiring, and you need time to re-energize.

YB,
thanks for the info. I do agree that the infant must learn to fall asleep him/herself.
My own experience with my daughter. Now she is super sticky to us when come to sleeping. She need to squeeze inbetween us and during weekend she will squeeze with hubby in one small mattress.

We dun know how can we train her to sleep on her own now.

Yenny,
is ur ger sleeping on her own now?

Diaper - Julian is suppose to use L but he is not the super tight bb so M still fits well.

Fruitee,
Fitti ok? Mamy poko is gd but the material is not as soft. I like Nepia Pant very soft.

HI Hong,

as for my ger, for more than 6 mths, she was sleeping in between us. We have just moved her to sleep on her own in a mattress but in same room still :pP Can tell that she is not use to it and is waking up every three hours! Yawn.

Re: Diapers
Huggies has this Ultra Comfort range and the price is as ex as Mamy Poko. Has anyone tried? I think Mamy poko still the best. But the Mamy poko pants not very good in absorbing urine.

May, when u call for free sample, u can request for that... I personally like it cos the absorbant n it's very slim... but the price is ex...

may
I use Huggies Ultra. If your bb is small enough to fit size M, I have half a pack to sell. Dylan has outgrown them. Anyone who's interested, let me know. I like them very much. They fit well, well cut, and the elastic goes all the way round making them very comfortable and even the side tabs are elasticated. They are very slim so fits well under clothing. They remind me of the UK Pampers which D used to use. Slim and elasticated side tabs. But being Huggies, their sizing is for slimmer babies so L for eg. is equivalent to other brands' M.

YB,
thanks for the info on bb falling asleep. My girl still cannot fall asleep on herself and need to pat her backside to sleep every nite...did u use the cry it out method on Kaylyn?

Hong
my gal used to sleep in her own room, own bed before xavier was born. But after my son was born, somehow she felt that she wanted to sleep with us, just like his brother. So now we co sleep in one room but she and her brother sleep in their own mattress. I think from next year, when she goes to pri 1, i am going to make her sleep on her own. Then when his brother turns two, i'll make him sleep with his sister. A few times, she tries to sleep between me and my hubby but we forbid her to do so as the bed can get a bit squeezy. Wat u can do is once janelle is asleep on ur bed, u transfer her to her own matress/bed. Dun let her get used to it or else very diff to 'wean' her off.

Blessings
No prob...

Yes, Fitti very good. Imagine whole nite no change also no leakage... just super heavy.. kekek..

Yenny,
ur ger going to pri 1 next year! I keep thinking she is 4 this yr. hee..

I did wat u did. I transfer her to her own mattress which is just beside our bed but in the mid of the nite she will climb up to our bed again. We are too tired to stop her and she get very cranky in the mid of the nite if we restrict her. Sleep is so impt to us so we let her be. I know is bad but it become a habit. She like the body contact.

Imagine during weekend, hubby will place two mattresses on the next room to accoy her. She will stick closly to her daddy and end up 2 sleeping on one mattress.

I got a soft bed her. May be shld really get her a bed n make sure she stay in it.

I have reminded my MIL to let Julian sleep in his playpen which she requested to get last time and she claim Julian not use to it. It frustrat me to think that both kids are going to be like that next time.

During weekend i placed Julian to sleep on the mattress. I dun want to rely too much on human contact to fall asleep.

May,
i think ur ger is use to smell and human touch. There is gd n bad abt co-sleep. Some kids can be "wean" off from parents but some may need more time.

Mamy poko normal diaper is gd but the pant seem to be quite stiff. Wonder why is the product turn out to be so different.

Mezzo17
Initially my bb also can't fall asleep on herself. I give her a warm bath at 10pm, play some CD music for her and pass her favourite blanket.... hee hee! She has to smell the blanket..... But she still cannot fall asleep on her own bed. I have to carry her back to her bed after she is totally asleep.

sleeping - altho zav dun need anymore nite feeding, he is still waking up at nite...usu ard 3am-5am.

he needs the pat... only rare occasion he can roll ard n sleep by himself.

esp when he is sick.. aiyoh, can be super sticky.

but i realise my boy also quite dependent on "seeing" someone. so in the middle of the nite, he will wake up and stand by my bed n call for pple. so many nites, i simply go down to the floor and sleeps with him.

think if he can climb up the bed, he sure climb up himself to the bed.

aivilo - so after u shift her back to her own bed, she will sleeps thru the nite huh?

wat if she wakes up in the middle of the nite?

Zoe,
So sorry for delaying the collection of the bibs. Is this weekend okie for me to go your place to take the bibs? Let me know. Many thanks!!

hong
next yr pri 1 liao. Stress! if co sleep, best is to let ur children sleep on different beds or mattress. For me both my kids sleep on their own mattress. I had a bad experience sleeping wif my kid on my bed. the next morning i sprained my neck and hand cos my sleep position was awkward. Once they got use to ur body scent, hoho, they will stick to you no matter wat during sleeping. can i make a suggestion to you? Buy a super beautiful bed eg with princess bedsheet and pillow case, decorate janelle's room to attract her to sleep in her own room. For a start, tell her bedtime stories and accompany until she falls asleep in her own bed. tat's wat i do when i train my gal.

Emerson too, just started to put him sleep in his own room...for some reasons he gets up very frequently and I had to walk in and out of mine and his room more often than I go toilet in the day time (think i share this before), sometimes just to pick up his pacifer for him. After that, I tried co-sleeping again, but its the same , he gets up frequently too.

Mezzol,
Yup..I used the cry it out method in Kaylyn...I used to have a phobia at night cos everytime gotta rock & sing her to sleep...but ever since I had mild depression, my hb insisted on using the cry it out method...then me happier & bb sleeps longer & happier.

both my boys sleep on their on beds.my elder boy used to sleep on his own bed since he was 2mths,but co sleep with us when he was 2yrs old.in e mid of e night,he climbed out of his bed which was beside our bed n sleep between us.everytimes when he did tat,we carried him back to his own bed.In n out for few wks, finally he gets use to by sleeping on his own bed.

as for kevin, duuno wat's wrong wif him?he gets up every 2-3hrs...crying.i tried to pat him frm his bed,he cried even louder, must make milk for him then carry n pat him to sleep.he cannot fall asleep on his own.then few hrs later, wake up again until we r v tired tat we let K sleep between me and my hubby.

joykel,
I understand. Every 2 - 3 hours is no joke manz. I am like a walking zombie now. I also cant simply pat Ryan, he will fussed and cried even more. He is like telling me "GIVE ME MY MILK!".

eeyore,
It will be better if u signed up photobucket then cut and paste the html link or the blog link onto ur blog.

Cos the photo attached option dun works sometime.

Yenny,
thanks for the suggestion. I will try but hor she will wake up in the mid of the nite to look for us leh.

PM,
i have a frd who ger is the same age as Janelle. She will wake up in the mid of the nite n wun go back to sleep and fuss none stop. The little ger was 1yo then. The mummy went to bring the ger for massage etc etc and no choice but to consult Dr Sim. The PD suggest to the parents to let her cry to sleep cos he say that her bad habit.

Thus, when Julian fidget i bo chap him. Unless he really fidget for pretty long then i will feed him water and pat him back to sleep.

I am really considering shld i get a playpen at my place so i place him to sleep in the other room and ignore him totally. I dun even want to place a monitor to monitor him.
