(2006/07) JULY 2006 MTB

blessings,

K sleeps v close to me when i put him on my bed.he grabs my face wif his 2 hands...look at me,then few mins later fall asleep.sometimes i ned to pat n sing to him for nearly 1 hr b4 he can fall asleep.

YB,
My hubby reject the cry it out method...say im toturing her baobei...maybe must psycho him again tat many pple say tat its the best way then bb can sleep longer...
now also headache that she cant sleep thru the nite...everyday only surviving wif ard 5-6 hrs of sleep...haiz...

but hor, different babies will react to cry it out method differently. Some babies like kaylyn will learn and fall asleep on her own. We tried it on xavier, wah he is very stubborn, fight to the end wif us. cry non stop, cry until face turn red, cry until voice coarse oso won't stop. In this case, we have to use the modified and not the full cry it out method.

Yenny,
If I leave Ryan to cry, he will cry until very cham...eyes closed, kept crying until like what u mentioned, face red red..... So I have to raise up my white flag...and SURRENDER to him.

blessings
sama sama here. sometimes i so scared if he crys too long, he will get sore throat.

hong
agree, agree! compare to my gal, xavier is much more difficult and more naughty and more stubborn, u name it. but sometimes i wonder is it becos we old liao compare to when we hav our gals. tat's why we feel like tat...

Mezzol,
Cry it out method is not the best method, but it's one of the way to train bb to learn to fall asleep on their own. I wasn't very keen on tis method but my hb insisted. Soon, I began to see it's benefit & am glad I listen to hb...Now, I'll look out for signs of Kaylyn being sleepy (i.e. rubbing eyes, yawning), then I just lay her down in cot & do my chores or go shower....I'm glad I dun have to waste time rocking or carrying her. This is also useful when we're out cos Kaylyn can now make herself sleep & we dun have to worry abt her being over-stimulated.

I also survive with 5-6hrs sleep everyday..heehee...cos I'm a night owl.

Yenny,
It took us weeks & months to train Kaylyn leh..Even now once a while, she also need us to pacify her. But if we're insistent in our methods, bb will slowly learn. When we 1st started training Kaylyn (abt 3rd mth), Kaylyn can cry for hours non-stop, face turn bright red, hands & legs flagging in the air (she's a cry baby then)...She'll even gag cos of her saliva. I did chores to distract myself & hb turned up TV volume to drown out her cries...IT'S TERRIBLE!! But slowly, she knows her cries doesn't help & she cried lesser & lesser until she's resigned to her fate.

Dylan wakes up the whole house when I let him cry at night cos he's soo loud. And he holds his breath, turns red in the face. Now he can crawl, he'll crawl around and play with things like wires if I don't pat him back to sleep fast enuff. I'll prob attempt the pseudo cry it out method again over the weekend when nobody has to work the next morning. ;-)

Lala
Sat morning I'll be in. Can you make that? If you can't, let me know what times are good for you and I'll make arrangements.

yb
but hor now our babies can crawl, roll, stand so now if i leave him to cry, in addition i scared he will hurt himself eg bang his head, fall down, leg stuck...

now xavier falls asleep after some patting. but hor he very good in rolling ard which i find it very disturbing cos i am a light sleeper. i oso realise xavier can sleep better and longer in air con. is it the same for other babies?

Mummies,
I always give myself a time frame when training Kaylyn to fall asleep on her own...i.e. give myself 10mins time, then go in & pacify her if she continues to cry...then next day, 15mins, followed by 30min & so on...otherwise REALLY can go crazy lor...I also tell myself I'll go crazy wif the kinda schedule at night, mayb even do something crazy to Kaylyn. So I might as well b a bit hardhearted & train her...then both she & me will be happier & more sane...haa..haa..

Here's how I train Kaylyn:
3rd - 5th mth: Train Kaylyn to fall asleep on her own.
4th mth: Co-sleep wif Kaylyn to train her to sleep thru-out the night.
5th mth: Move Kaylyn to her cot in our room so she's used to sleeping on her own.
6th - 7th mth: Move her to her nursery.

Yenny,
Yes, I understand wat u mean...Kaylyn's legs will also tend to get stuck around the cot railings while she's tossing & turning in cot to fall asleep...tat's y I still keep a look out for her cries. If I feel something is not right, I'll peep thru the doorway. But I keep my entrance to her room short...free her legs & leave the room..I dun maintain eye contact wif her, dun pat or speak to her...

Not sure about other babies, but Kaylyn sleeps in non-aircon room...I only leave the fan on at full blast. Mayb cos my a/c not working well, so on already also not cooling. Hee...hee...

Zoe,
Kaylyn used to cry very loud & hysterically too! When I brought her to Plaza Singapura at her 2nd month, she cried until the whole shopping center echoed wif her cries...Then even strangers at the escalator turned around & asked me wat happened...I just said dunno lor...have to b really thick-skin somemore...

Then to make matters worst, my mum criticised Kaylyn. Said she dunno how to care for such a diff bb cos Kaylyn keeps crying & crying. Even rocking/singing/feeding doesn't help at all. I was really very depressed then.

my concerns for cry it out mtd now-

1) scare he cry until sore throat/cough/runny nose etc. Already in IFC, he is prone to falling sick.

2) now tat he is able to cruise ard himself, scare that he will hurt himself in the cot when i let him cry it out now. (so think only good for smaller babies)

YB
Hee. When Dylan was 11 days old I brought him to the mall and he cried his usual volume as well. Everyone kept staring and I had to leave. Didn't wanna entertain kay pohs.

Hong - I tried that method before, because Im simply too tired to get up and sometimes dozed off back to sleep. But I realised, the longer he cries, the harder it is for him to get back to sleep... and once, he even fell out the bed coz i dozed off while patting him.

I have a feeling E's quite rebellious kind. he will get even worser when ever i use to hard appraoch.

Cry it out method - I remember YB, OC and me had the same difficult situation of pacifying bb to sleep at night at first and we were all trying to use the CIO method but only YB succeeded.

Party why i stop trying out its because, I stayed with my ILs then, and when E cries hysterically, he disturbed my ILs, my FIL hate ppl to disturb his sleep and MIL will be very gan choeng to see what happen and dash into my room. As I was surfing around to find a better method of pacifing BB to sleep, I accidentally came across some criticism of this method.. and I thought its quite true, so end up I did not insist to try this method.

What I did was to make sure I follow a strict sleeping timing for Emerson. Off all the lights, Feed him with milk, give him pacifier, and pat him on the bed (instead of walking him ard the house, coz at one stage, he really easily gets distracted with things ard him). Now he sleeps on his own at night, but I make sure Im beside him.. He toss and turn and fall asleep himself.

Its just the napping prob I face now, he must sleep with sarong in the day time... if i go out shopping he will "lao gai" coz very tired.. so I always make sure he gets at least 1 nap in the morn before I go out.

Thanks for all the discussion getting baby to sleep. Have not been online as frequent as I would like to be as I'm too tired .. lately, yujie kept waking up at 4am+ and it's very tiring. Wonder if it's teething. I wanted to try to "control crying" but am too soft hearted. Once baby make noise I will wake up.

Hi YB, Wow. Kaylyn move to her own room already ah. I dare not try as I scared Yu Jie wakes up and see nobody in the room he will be scared.. Moreover, I think both myself and husband will not be able to sleep without Yu Jie in the room. We probably check his room every half-hour.. Haiz, I think I keep him in till he's older.. or maybe when I have another one.. if I ever do..

hi mummies,

HB on biz trip again....this time 2 weeks. Me all alone with bb and so many things to do....sigh. Mummies with HBs who travel frequently, kudos to you!

Re: Sleep Training
Like YB we used the CIO method on Keagan too since he was 3mths. took us one week to train him to go to sleep on his own. after that, you just put him down "voila!" Initially, I was also softhearted, always giving in till one night I flared up due to exhaustion and screamed at him. HB started training the next day for him to sleep on his own.

As for sleeping through, we started training in his 5th mth. HB will soothe him and put him back to crib, or give him water or let him CIO. HB had to do this part of trg coz I am still bfing and the moment I carry only, boy wants milk. Took us 2 weeks, I think. Sometimes I hear him cry till so cham I want to just give in but HB firm...else all efforts go to waste.

But Keagan relapsed two months back when we were busy with renovations and upset his schedule. Felt guilty so gave in to him. Needed me to pat to sleep and keeps waking up at night.

Started to retrain him again after we moved....not as easy liao. This time round he can cry up to 1hr at top volume and still be awake....Think as they get bigger it gets harder to train them. My boy has our tempers combined! He is smarter also, will turn ard and pull the bumper down to look for mummy. Changed to graduated approach this time. Took us about one month this time to train him to sleep through...hopefully it will last this time... MY poor HB havent had proper night's sleep since bb came...well, except on his biz trips! haha.

PM,
i do agree with Yenny that CIO approach dun apply to all kids but for my frd case is really bad. As the kid is already past 1yo so that is consider a bad habit.

I understand some kids will get stuck in the cot. I was thinking to get the playpen and it is netted so wun get stuck.

Jul, Lucida, PM,
u all remind me of the "bad" old days where i have to pat my daughter to sleep and it cant took me like 2hrs. Sometime i can start at 9pm and battle with her till 12mn with singing patting etc etc....

however Janelle got her gd point. She wun flip in sarong but Julian does. Which is extremely difficult to make him sleep in it. Once he turn he wakes up. So compairing the two kids, Janelle napped very well. She can napped 3hrs when she was an infant and even now providing didi dun wakes her up. Sometime she will complain that Julian is very noisy and keeps disturbing her nap.

AS for Julian, his max is only 2hrs. His morning nap is at most 1hr. However, i am glad he sleep early at nite.

PM,
Janelle is a sarong bb and my hubby and IL always believe she only nap in sarong. Which i am very determine to prove them wrong thus i started to put her to sleep on bed instead of letting her dose off at nite in sarong.

Daytime, i will purpose use the carrier and go shopping and purposely shop past her napping time and make her sleep in the carrier. I am a pretty extreme mummy so dun learn from me. I just wanna share my story.

Even now, if we way past Janelle nap time (yes she still nap cos my hubby is a naptime routine enforcer) i will try to keep her awake so she can sleep early at nite. Of course, she will be very fussy and cranky.

Sleep training,
i let my boy listen to children song from Baby Genius. Eg "Wheel on the bus" practise same routine like :

2000 : Bathing time
2200/2230 : Last feeding of milk
2245 : On music, light off then pat him to sleep else just give him pillow or towel he will auto sleep.

I don't think i got problem letting my boy sleep alone because he has been sleeping alone on his own mattress from as young as 3 mth old. We only buy mattress no BB cot. ( Sleep on the floor)

hong,

can't imagine patting for 2 hrs... my boy likes to be patted hard and fast...a bit 'nei dai' but he likes it that way. think my arm will fall off manz.

we tried putting him in sarong when he had colic in the first 3 mths but he doesn't like it. been sleeping in his cot since the day we brought him home. and since we moved, he's in his own room too! HB and I so happy to get our privacy back! He din have much problem transiting to sleepin in his own room. Maybe coz we usually put him to bed then we will leave him to sleep on his own in our room, and we only go to sleep much later. So not much difference.

Jul,
infact, i can forsee that it will be hard for me to train Julian cos i only bring him back on weekend. Unless MIL coodinate with me but i dun think so. She will give me alot of excuses.

One way is to bring Julian back but i dun think hubby will agree cos it will be very rush for us in the morning. Need to bring Janelle to school then send Julian to IL place.

Just tonite, i told Janelle off that she has to be in her own mattress. I make her set up her own mattress. Of course she wun agree and wanted to sleep on the bed. I told her, either she sleep on her own mattress or off she goes to her own room. If she vomit, i cant be bother and she can sleep in the room that stinks.

I hope i dun have to do the same thing to Julian else I will break alot of my blood vessals.

Hong,

I have the same struggle as u previously..but manage to make my eldest gal sleep on her own mattress when she reached 18 mths, try to make her "bed" as cosy as possible, i put mine between my cupboard & my bed & we bougth her those high spring mattress (v comfy). I also put on nice mattress cover(soft colour)..It works for me.

Sleep training: none...sigh

I am also a weekend mom and many times, becos I feel bad about leaving her on weekdays that she is treated like a princess when I bring her back on weekends....I carry her almost all the time and hug her to sleep lying on my chest.

Luckily for me, at around 10 at night, she will start rubbing eyes and showing signs of sleepiness and will fall asleep within 10 mins of me carrying her and I will continue to let her sleep lying on my chest while I watch TV. After that I will carry her to our bed and let her co-sleep with us. Sometimes she will cry a bit in the middle of the night but will go back to sleep after a hug. She will only cry for milk about 4-5 hours after the last feed.

At my mom's, she will sleep on her own in her cot but in the same room as my parents. So far, she is ok with the different arrangements but my mom says she is getting smarter...starting to raise arms to ask to be carried and pat to sleep...sigh I am probably spoiling her but I really can;t bear to let her cry...I will probably suffer next time when I try to wean her off this and will complain to you mummies here.

hong
haha, you're so funny (abt the breaking of blood vessels), but very disciplined. i hope i learn something from you next time i start training my boy when he is older.

now, hb and i just look for signs of him rubbing eyes and whining that indicate he's ready for bed, we make milk, feed him on the rocker and he falls asleep on his own after milk feed - that's usually around 9 plus. once past this stage, he will just go to sleep without wanting to drink his milk.

Hi Lucida,
Yes, I did chk in on Kaylyn every now & then when she 1st sleeps alone in nursery. (even though there's a bb monitor). Only my hb can sleep like a pig...but then most men are bo chap. Kaylyn tend to wake up at night during the initial training...& I have to resort to putting our clothings in her nursery, so she can smell us & won't feel so lonely.
Now, we're all used to it. We even turn down the monitor's vol so we can sleep better..hee..hee...

Sleeping Through
Dylan's fine with falling asleep at bedtime. It's the sleeping through part that's the problem. I have to pat him to sleep but he wakes up frequently and if I don't pat him, he either crawls off or screams the house down. He does try to fall back asleep on his own but doesn't manage usually. He tosses and turns but can't manage it on his own and gives up after a few minutes. Or he starts singing which keeps me awake. Any suggestions?

Sleeping @ night:

I tried night training when Kristen was around 3 - 4 months old. I could do it cos hb was in school doin his project n couldn't make comments. But once it came to the holidays n he was around, he looked pretty skeptical n felt bad for her to be left alone to fall asleep. Only could do it one or two days, then i gave in n juz picked her up so she could fall asleep faster.
Now it's become a habit already. We'd wipe her n feed her last milk feed. If she's not sleepy, we'd let her roll around on our bed or in her cot, wait for her to start whining then we'd pat her to sleep. Otherwise, if she's sleepy she'll just fall asleep after drinkin d milk.

Same as missmoon, signs of sleepiness is rubbing eyes n whining...

Sleeping thru... she usually sleeps thru these days if she had enough milk b4 she sleeps. Enough milk or not, we can't force cos once she doesn't want to drink anymore, there's no way we can push the bottle in. So sometimes, she'd still wake up at around 4 or 5 in the morning for more milk. I suspect that there are nights that she wakes up in the middle but juz falls asleep again cos the lights are off n can't see anyone. I've woken up before to hear her rolling n tossing around, kicking here n there.. but. i juz go back to sleep n decided i would only attend to her if she actually cries. haha..

zoe
can't offer much help, cos Ethan is like that too. i hv to pat him back to sleep, and i realise that letting him sleep on his side and patting him to back to sleep is much much faster than having him sleep flat on his back. i turn on a low light, hv no eye contact with him at all when patting him to sleep. and once early morning hours hit, like 5am onwards, i can forget abt sleeping cos it's impossible for him to fall back to sleep at that time of the morning.

Hong,
I can imagine how tiring it is to pat for 2hrs...cos I've been guilty of tat too...to my NEPHEW! He was the 1st grandchild in our family, so everyone pampered him...I still remember we have to take turns rocking & patting him to sleep EVERYNIGHT & during his naps. Damn tiring, esp when he's bigger & heavier. He only learns to fall asleep on his own when he's 3yr old...

Zoe,
Wah, Dylan sings in the middle of the night? Hmm, when I 1st trained Kaylyn to sleep thru, she's co-sleeping wif us cos I find she sleeps deeper when she's sleeping on her tummy. Then if she wakes up in the middle of the night, I pat her back to sleep. Or give her water but lesser & lesser. My rm is very dark at night cos I use the sunblock curtains. Can't even see the fingers at night. So mayb tat's y Kaylyn can't c anything to distract her while she was learning to fall back to sleep again in the middle of the night. Another way is to totally ignore her when she starts babbling in the middle of the night...after 30mins, or 1hr, she'll fall back to sleep. Even though by then I'm already awake, but I dun let her see me & I'll pretend to b fast asleep.

Zoe,
not sure about ur room, but are the lights fully turned off?

that's my only suggestion. hahaa.. cos i dunno how kristen falls asleep by herself also. =(

peach
same same. i leave him alone if i hear him talking to himself, or raising his legs and letting it drop loudly on the mattress (and this he sometimes do it non-stop!). so long as he doesn't cry, i try to let him fall back to sleep on his own.

if he starts whining again, then i'll get up and pat him back to sleep.

Hi mummies,
Surprised, surprised! Know wat happened just not while I was changing kaylyn's nappy? She was whistling! I thought I heard wrongly & whistle back to her..but then she started to form "O" wif her mouth & whistle again!! Wonder where she learns it from?

missmoon. yah.. my girl does that too, that raising legs n dropping loudly on mattress! n u noe what? sometimes she kicks the mobile buttons n the mobile will turn on n play music n sometimes even flash light. omg. it's quite scary to hear the mobile go off in the middle of the night. haha..

YB, haha.. hubby n i wld crawl or stoop lowlow if we have to walk past her cot at nite when she's half asleep. or if we wanna check on her we'd peep under the cot bumper. cos as soon as she'd see us she'd start whining for attention.

Is good to know that some babies here just need to pat and they went back to their sleep. When Ryan is awake, the more you pat him, the more he will cry....for milk. So it means "TIME FOR MY MILK". Sometimes I wonder if it has become a habit already.

missmoon,
I do agree with you that babies sleep longer when they are at their side instead of on their back.

Yenny,
i switch on the air con cos my room is very warm if no air con. Ryan will perspire especially his head...but he will be wearing a sleeping bag when I switch on the air con.

hahaa, ya, it's quite scary to hear it go off suddenly. the first time it happened, i was spooked, then realised the culprit is the little fella.

and ya lor, when he's trying to fall asleep, i avoid going anywhere near him, or if have to pass cot, then crawl around it, otherwise, whining will really go on and on.

blessings, Ethan also sleeps in aircon room, if not, his head area will perspire until very wet.

peachsorbet,
kevin sleeping routine same as kristen. We wipe him(8pm+),play n feed him milk(9pm+). If he is still not sleepy, we'll let him play on our bed,but he doesnt like to roll on his cot.juz like u... wait for him to start whining then we'll pat him to sleep. Otherwise, if he's sleepy he'll juz fall asleep after having e milk.

hong,
yesterday HB n i patted kevin for 4hrs. kevin cried at 11pm+ till 3am+,fed him milk n he didnt wan.we picked him up n do patting,he fell asleep but woke up again(every 10-15mins)...screaming n crying away.then 5am+ woke up again for about half an hr.morning he woke up at 730am,juz took a shower n he is sleeping now.
both HB n my elder boy didnt sleep well last nite.haiz...really v tiring...sigh.

compairing my two boys, keith can sleeps for many hrs during day n nite.no nite feed since 4 mths, slept thru.even now he still can nap for 3-4hrs during naptime.

Hi YB,

Kayln never fails to tickle me with all her 'stunts'!!! She's really funny. I shall give her a hug when I see her at MTDT's house this Sun.

Guess everyone now got some problems with sleep. I always thought my Gerrard was the only one. Aftet 6 mths old, Gerrard seems to pick up the habit of waking up around 3~4am and wants some attention. Sometimes to the extend wants to play at that hour.

Nowadays, we just pick him up and sleep between us. When he sleep on my bed with my wife, no problem, sleep on his cot, he will wake up. Every clever to choose bed sia. LOL......Hope this is just a passing phase and he will quickly get it over with.

By the way, would like to check when is it advisable for them to sleep on the bed alone in a room?

Missmoon
Wahh... so good ah Ethan, can just pat and sleep.. Kayden wans to be carried to sleep one.. haiz...
Kayden also keep doing the raising of his legs and stomp the mattress... can repeating do it.. I wonder his legs not tired meh.. kekeke

see so many bb here all can pat to sleep.. so good.

Blessings
I tried to alternately let Kayden sleep in aircon cos I scare he rely too much on it. but at times when he really sweat like a pig like the weather so hot now, bo pian liao.. have to on aircon.

Zoe, I think Dylan is very cute.. Hahaa starts singing. lolx. Emerson will only try to mumbler and smile at us, waiting for us to carry him, by then our hearts melted already...and will just wait for him to be sleepy again. Me and hb very soft hearted.

Missmoon, same.. Emerson will not fall back to sleep when he wakes up around 7am.. like today. So tired, I decided to bring him Mac for breakfast.. hehehe.. he had hotcakes for breakfast even before milk.

YB- Kaylyn is so clever to knw how to whistle...

liverpool - I dunno when's the best time to let them sleep alone in his own room alone. But I start letting Emerson sleep around last mth but with a baby monitor.

liverpool
if babies can fall off while awake on bed, they can surely roll off too when asleep. i think best to sleep in a cot if alone in a room, safer mah, no?

fruitee
his whining means wanna be carried sometimes but i choose to ignore, let him whine a bit lo. hehe, ya lor, they seem to be training their legs strength for next time. haa

PM haaa, they really keep us on our toes, dun they? but at least E wake up, u bring him out to breakfast. i bad, let him play alone until he make noise.
