(2006/04) April 2006 MTB

hi ladies
my hb sending me and Leo to class this Sun. but i'm afraid he's very 'shy' so he told me he'll hang around and do his own thing and wait for the class to end... sigh, so anti-social, what to do?

Hey Bebe,

Actually there's no need to sterilise the bowls and such. Just wash them with warm soapy water. Sterilsation was nec last time when the quality of water was dubious. Since Shawn was born, I don't sterilise his stuff so much, cos we dun live in a sterile world and sometimes it's good for their immune system to be expose to some germs so that it can be built up

As long as it's not yucky!

Hi all,

I'm new here. Have been reading the forum for the past months but have been a silent member :p I'm a Singaporean in the US and my son Shawn, who is 5 month old today(!) is born here.

It's interesting to see the difference in how we take care of our babies in Singapore and US - it's quite different.

Anyway, I read that bottled baby food is better than home-made because the manufacturers have to make sure that the quality of the food is there. Most of them are quickly bottled after preparation so that there few chance of contamination. home-made might seem healthier, but might be more easily contaminated. Just to share

btw, can someone tell me if organic bottled baby food is available in Singapore and how much does each bottle cost approximately?

hi su,
welcome
happy.gif

yes, organic bottled baby food is quite easily available here but i suppose the range is quite limited compared to places like US, UK and Aust. i just saw some Earth's Best and Healthy Times ones today at Tanglin Mall for abt S$2.50/bottle.

nosy me wants to know which part of the US are you in, if you don't mind? earlier this week, hubby and i were just talking abt going there again because we really enjoyed ourselves the last time and i've always liked visiting the states

Thanks Mui66 for the info

I am in staying in Phoenix Arizona, the hottest place in the US... haha, you wouldn't want to come to this part of the US! It can get as hot as 48 Deg C! Waiting for summer to be over. The weather's not good for Shawn, he always getting heat rash and dry skin. Singapore's weather with it's high humidity is actually v good for babies, haha, now I can appreciate!

I like the States, esp the West and East Coasts

Where did u go the last time?

Suppose to hang biscuit on them when there are 4 mths old. Dun know what for but have many interpretations. My MIL version is that since we hang Marnee biscuit...means got money money.

Pix of J's biscuit ceremony and his clean shaven head which is also part of the 4th month routine.

Su,
Organic jar foods cost about $2.30 - $2.60. Can find Gerber, Heinz, Healthy Times at NTUC and major supermarkets.

wow, arizona!! are you on an air base?

i like both coasts too, haven't really been in between so can't comment on middle America. last year, we did a driving trip from SF to LA and we also visited Las Vegas. the year before, i took a short side trip to NYC (main destination was Canada) by myself to visit friends, i really love the vibe there

Miu66
I'm not staying on the airbase, but you got it right, my hubby's with the RSAF, that's why we are here.
happy.gif
We are staying off base. Have been here for around 1.5 years already, will be going back to Singapore early next year. Yah, I agree with you, the vibe here is good and very baby friendly. Am rather afraid to go back to Singapore... cos of the more stressful living environment and not too sure just how baby friendly things are (din really pay attention when I wasn't pregnant/ a mom!) As it is, the way we look after our kids are quite different here and in Singapore! e.g. we don't give water to babies until they start solids, etc. MIL will be around also, so more stress for me. She's sure to give advice (whether solicited or not). Sigh.

Btw, does anyone know of any good (or rather, very good :p) nanny around Sengkang area? Got to resume work at my old work place (am on no pay leave) when I go back, so now has to start planning the care for my son. Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

Evon,
My friend who's a Mar mummy once had similar experience where her gal rejects BM (she direct latch on) for one whole day. That time baby not weaning yet, still on TBF. Then she read Gina Ford's book realised that baby is protesting against some food she has eaten the day before. She had lamb chops. But hor...you not feeding BM mah...so shouldn't be this problem.

Su,
since you r in US, u may be familiar with the following: swede, parsnip and lentils. Can enlighten me whether -
Swede - is similar to bangwang (the turnip used in popiah)
parsnip - is it bai luo bo (those used for carrot cake)
lentils - what are these huh? any chinese/dialect names?

chenoa
swedes - look similar to bangkwang but are not exactly the same. if i'm not mistaken, the flesh is more fibrous. not easy to find here, maybe only in Jasons or COld Storage Gourmet.

parsnip - is not bai luo bo. it is white and the flesh is similar to turnips but the taste is quite different. same as swedes, it's not commonly available here, try the more ang moh supermarkets.

lentils - are commonly found in indian curries (dahl). they look like dried beans. they should be very easy to find here in supermarkets or even the wet market.

hope this helps!

Hi all,

For those who bf, have your menses come back yet? My menses just came back today
sad.gif
Was hoping that it will come back later...

fussiecat,

The good thnig about pregnancy is that we dont have to experience menses for so long... sigh.. didnt expect it to be so soon ;p

Chenoa, sorry wasn't able to get back to you earlier (zzzz due to diff time zone), but anyway, I don't know :p miu66 gave some good answers
happy.gif

My friend who's on TBF (direct latch) only had her menses when her baby is 10 months old.. hoping that I will be like her.. haha
happy.gif
Anyway, I heard that moms' whose babies sleep through the night without bf will get back menses earlier as opposed to those whose babies still wakes up. If so, I sure get it much later, cos my son wakes up more than 5 times a night on most nights *shake head*

chenoa
you're most welcome!! i know some of this stuff cos i like to cook, and more importantly, i like to eat!!!!
biggrin.gif
i dunno what lentils are called in chinese, i'll go ask my mom and get back to you. but i do know that it should be available in the supermarket, prob in the same section where they sell green beans, red beans, barley etc. for wet market, i think you can try the indian shop or maybe those dried goods shop, can try asking the auntie/uncle there, tell them it's the sort used for indian cooking.

re: menses
i'm not looking forward to getting it back either

Su,

Very true leh.. my girl has been sleeping thru the night since 3 mths ago.. perhaps thats why I got my menses back so quickly...

Hi ladies
yeah..i was starting 2 become concerned why my menses have not return..unlike majority of u who bf ur bbs directly, i express (usually 2 - 3 times a day) & feed to my bb via bottle so dunno whether consider bf a not..when is e usual time for one 2 have her menses back after pregnancy?

Dear Aunties,
When Mama see other Apr babies with fine thick hair become botak at 4mth, she asks if I should get a shave too...great grandma says that after shave thicker hair will grow.....but Papa says, "no need lah, already no hair what to shave?" I also wonder why I have so little hair in the first place.

Somemore, Mama always have to explain to ahma and all the aunties why the LHS of my head is flat with an ugly empty patch. She tells me grass will never grow without sunshine. So, she will purposely make me face RHS or turn my head when I'm sleeping. But I always revert back to my old comfortable sleeping position.

Now Mama apply BM on my scalp for 15 min before my shampoo. Hope my hair grow out soon.

Love,
YY

Sept 03 Bride,
Really??! Wat a small world! What's her name? Ur brother is here too I presume? Is she in Phoenix or Tucson? There's several RSAF detachments here.

gals...my gal dunno wat happen...this past wk been waking up at 2-4am n refuse to sleep after nursing. Have to entertain her for 1.5-2hrs. Tiring for a working mum leh. She used to sleep thru till abt 6am. I am still putting her to bed at same time. arghh...

Hi Tiffany,

Thanks for organsing the class
happy.gif
Had fun with you ladies! Esp the photo taking part.. think we were so cruel, only bother about taking pics / videos while our babies were crying their lungs out ;p

babe,

U are not the only one. My ger now sleeps latest 1040 pm. And normally she can sleep till 7am or 8 am. But recently she loves to wake up at 4 or 5 am for her feed. But luckily she does manage to sleep after that. Well, we are equally tired, having to wake up so early.

Babe,
think it's their growth spurt or teething problem?

Read that during teething times, bb tends not to sleep very well n worse of all, will b especially fussy n notty.

I oso noticed Xuanting putting her fingers to the right side of the mouth n pulling her right ear. Guess it is teething tat causing all the discomfort.

Becoz of this too, she doesn't want her milk to be too warm.. juz ard 30degrees, then she'll drink...

Poor gal..

Hunniepot,

agree.. juz rush to get my hp to snap foto n my gal cried already... haiz.. so ended up didn't take foto of her with all other bbs... so sad. =(

Personally not sure of the class le.. find tat some of things my mom oso taught me to play with her already n so Xuanting was quite enjoying it, I guess.. but becoz it is morning, she normally will catch 2 more naps b4 she dun sleep in the afternoon n so was a bit fussy at the second half of the lessons.

koalarie,

My ger has been stuffing her fingers all the way into her mouth.. dunno why... teething?? And basically if she do it, she is in her own world. U call her, she also bochap.

Evon

I took a video clip of almost all the babies, remember seeing your girl in it.. you wnt a copy? Can send to you if you want
happy.gif

yes, YY also like that. She's more interested in sucking her fist and fingers than eating her cereal. Whatever she can get hold of, she'll pull it into her mouth - blanket, pillow, toys, bib, etc. She'll gag too if her fingers go too deep in, but she never learn.....When we carry her front facing, she will bend her head forward and suck our hands. Her suction quite powerful and can feel the gums are harder now, now soft soft when they were smaller. Think this is an early phase to teething. When teeth is spouting out, lagi worse i think.

Hunniepot,
yes.. i want.. =p

Cheona,
same for xuanting. yesterday, i was shocked when she took my fingers forcefully n put into her mouth n "bite" really hard on it. OMG.
