BOLIAO SHARING: DARKNESS, LIGHT, PLAY
I have never wanted Potato to be afraid of darkness and to date, she is not.
Recently, she will demand that we go and sit in a dim corner and watch a movie (she has a toy that projects images on walls) I am getting bored of her daily demands of "mummy i want watch movie please thank you" (punctuation doesnt exist for her)
Today, her daddy brought home a small torchlight and I thought we will have some fun with it.
this was what we did for more than half an hour:
-close bedroom door, switch off all lights, sit on bed
-get the kid to get use to the darkness by talking about it and reassuring her that mummy is still next to her.
-intro concepts of light n dark, on and off (can use game of hide n seek / 'where is bb' to do this)
-switch on torchlight and shine on wall, ceiling.
-place small objects with distinct shapes infront of torchlight so that the shadow can be projected on wall.
(distinct shapes so easily recognisable for kids)
-can ask the kid to identify/name the silhouette
-short story-telling, i use various animals and cars shadows to tell a short story.
-concept of big n small (by varying the distance between an object n the torchlight. i use our hands/fingers to do it)
-shadow finger play. I am not good with this as i can only form 'rabbit ears' and 'crawling caterpillar' with my fingers.
-I also let her hand cast a shadow on the wall n my shadow hand will 'eat' or tickle her shadow hand etc
- play catch the light.
- play "I spy" ( i will switch off the torchlite, point at an object, switch it on ask her to name it.. we started with parts of body. we did it really really fast so it was very fun.
-count my shadow fingers.
-let her hold the torchlight, to do disco dancing lights on walls, ceiling. can sing a song about it.
-let her hold the torchlite and placed it on the mattress, and to see the circle of light enlarging as she hold the torch further from the mattress. she was real fascinated by this
-hid the torch under my n her tee and switch it on so the light is cast differently.
-use torch to search for hidden objects.
-use the color slides to for more colorful play.
-shine at individual letter on her alphabet chart(upper+lowercase) and asked her to name the letter and pronounce its phonetic sound. likewise for her number chart. make it quick, like a game! She loves it
whatever it is, hype it up, make it fun!
the possibilities are endless
