(2003) Calling all 2003 babies

There were much discussions on reading with phonics or whole word.
i chanced upon this and agree that reading is not abt sounding out the symbols but about being able to comprehend what one is reading.
i am also more for the whole-word approach since not all Eng words can be read using phonics. phonics is useful though when it comes to spelling, then again, not all words can be spelt by sounding out. er... am i confusing u?
anyway. have a look at this:

HI all,
The school I am volunteering is not in the east. It is considered north east or north. Is there other platforms that you ladies communicate? like msn chat or somehting? Not good for me to state the name of the school down.

HI worrymum,
wow your boy sure has lots of presents!

Hi chloe,
Like Seranade, I tink have to use both sight and phonics in reading. Read some articles that says sight should come before phonics. I am using both methods on my son but as he is not a strong visual learner, I introduced phonics before sight.
You menyion your girl going science center tomorrow? My boy too! wonder are they in same school? I pm you to ask.

HI Ky,
Have not tried ordering sambucol from overseas but have just shipped in nordic naturals DHA. Plus shipping onli 26 compared to 46 as sold in vitakids
u might want to check out the marketplace at this forum to see. I tink some mom bought from luckyvit. I got mine from iherb.com

Hi moshi2!

Thanks for the reference to the article...

haha... guess now I won't make such a big fuss about B picture-reading books. It's just appealing to his nonverbal thinking.

dun seem easy to teach reading at all...

I remembered my dad only attempted to teach me how to read as late as I was in pri 1 when I had spelling tests to take every week. He used a pseudo-phonics style (except that he wasn't very good with the English sounds as we all know how phonetic English is) and a syllabic reading method. Gee... I really wonder how I learned to read. It really is a mystery. That's why scientists always say that our brain is a big black box.

ANyway.... thanks to my dad, I started picking up reading. One bad thing though: It took me a really long time to read accurately and with speed and that when I read, I tried to make sure there was no imaginary sounds in my head - that really slowed me down and distracted me in reading and comprehending the material.

My... how would I ever know what's going in my children's heads when my own reading experience evolved from such complicated process?

Hi KY and kristin's mom,

Thanks for sharing with me on reading.

Just worried abt my boy's reading progress and always needs to fine tune methods to read to him.

Kristin's mom, thanks for tips on scrapbook. good idea!

C wants to be catwoman, for me anything also can lah, since it's so difficult to find one.. I have been rushing here and there to get the costume... in fact rushed to Toysrus at Vivo this evening, then realised that it;s too big for her!

If i still cannot find one, think may have to ask my mum to sew one for her...

Ky: thanks for your offer, will ask C first if she wants to wear the superman costume.

Sorry, no mood to post. Has been silently reading .. but i hv to inform you guys that the outdoor playground is closed for reno works till mid nov.

Hi worry mum
Happy Belated Birthday to Benjamin & thanks for sharing the photos. My gal saw a lady holding the number 4. Who's that,my gal asked & she replied is Ben's Ah Ma,no is Po Po,no teacher? The photo in orange t-shirt is that yourself?Well, believed Ben enjoyed himself very much and very thankful that he have such a nice bday cake and presents. Where did Ben's bday party held?

Hi ashleyjames
Understand that u don't feel gd to disclose the name of the sch but is it related to Budddist or Christian sch? At least some hints so that i don't want to waste my time waiting to be selected.

Hi Serenade
I don't know who is right as i read about u mentioned leaning phonics will tend to read slower than those learnt to read via sight in the beginning. But "I can read" and "Jan & Elly" both sch told me that must hv the phonics foundation than can read. But if practice reading the kids may not be able to pronouce the words correctly. Is it true?

Hi Star,
hehe.. Thanks. Yeah.. Benjamin's po po. Bingo.. the lady in orange in me!.. hehe.. The party is held in Benjamin's GrandAunt's home, and only within the family.

Hi Moshi
Disney Live show,I hv booked on sat 17Nov,6.30pm show, unable to make it on sun. Penpal gd idea, recalls my youngest days. I can ask cla to write to mel.In fact, when we passed by mail box she will ask me for key to open the mail box. But so far no letter for her:-( hee! Or we can ask them to talk over the phone. She knew how to dial out & can remember my hp no. I told her in case she lost must go into any shop and ask the salesperson to call me. Instead of crying for mummy.

Hi Mummies,

Today sch celebrating children's day normal sch hr but hv to wear in sport attire. My dd so excited woke up at 6.45am. Normally day ask her to wake very difficult. Complaint she is not feeling well or tired want to sleep some more.

Are your kids celebrating children's day today?

Hi catherine, ya thought it's only restricted to children. When I saw the blisters on my fingers, was like 'huh??' and went to see doc and asked sheepishly what he thought. The doc said 'of course adults too!' My gal didn't eat much for 2 days but just kept her hydrated with any liquids like soups, icecream, etc.

HFMD can be serious or mild. For serious cases, the child can reject any food for 2 days... for mild cases, you'll just see a few spots and kid behaves normally. for adults, yes, we can get it and it too can be serious or mild. B got it twice b4, once mild and once serious. when it was serious, he doesn't want anything, even if it's ice-cream, and all he does is sleep on my lap the entire day

.ky.

Hi chloe, me too like to follow my kids' school excursions when these are interesting and then have to take leave. Next monday they will be going on a field trip to vegetable farm and west coast park to celebrate Children's Day. So mummy going to! yippee..

Ha..talking abt knowing parents' Hp no and know how to dial. Aston called me and rushed me home two nights ago when I was having dinner with a friend from HK. Tonite is our wedding anniversary, we are quite sure he will call again and disturb us to go home early.

hi apricot,
ha ha i know that will happen, so chloe still doesnt know my hp

happy.gif

actually, you could also do the test with/for Mel, although some of the questions are not easy for her to answer since it involves much more life experience.

anyway, have fun trying to find out what her learning styles are.

i haven't done it with B though. i would say at first guess, he should score pretty high in the aural area.

Hi star,

There is no right or wrong methods. The debate between phonics and whole language approach has existed since long ago, like 1800s? What I understand is, America and UK are advocating phonics in their school curriculums. Various studies (in the west) have also shown that kids with phonics background tend to read better.

What I do strongly believe is phonics is just as important, or rather, it is more important than learning to read by sight for English. After all, the words we are reading are made up of sounds. Moshimoshi is right that half the English language cannot be sounded out phonetically. But remember, the other half uses phonics. And more often than not, parts of those non-phonetic words still can be sounded by using phonics. So, instead of relying on just memory, phonics is a great tool when it comes to decoding words. (Think Chinese has enough characters for my kids to utitlize their memory power
happy.gif
) Moshmimoshi brings out another valid point - comprehension. This is the most vital point when it comes to reading. We read to understand, not just the words. With phonics, less time is spent on decoding unfamiliar words and that allows the brain more time to work on comprehening the text/passage. Without the tool to decode unfamiliar words, some kids may just simply ignore and skip the word totally. That's what happening in the west.

As for which should come first, my stand is always phonics and then sight words.

But then again, bear in mind a few points on phonics -

within phonics, there are a few methods of teaching. Even phonics experts can't agree on one.

too many rules in phonics.

phonics may not be suitable for all. Blending comes easy for some kids but not all.

As it is, girls are better at reading by sight. That's what I am told too.
happy.gif

Hi star,

oh yes, I tend to believe that phonics lead to better pronounciation too. eg, pan vs pen, pat vs pad.

When I mean slower at reading initially, it means the kid needs some time to sound out the letters and blend them together. Once they get it and with practice, I think they should read very well.

Chloe, how come you put 1a 1/2c? half child? ha...

Moshi, I'm baking a cake but someone need to bring "fire"

Sarah, hope there's hawailian pizza.

Sarah, one last thing, the maps. Decided to change our travel plans. Going Taiwan and Japan instead of Bangkok and Japan. I think Taiwan shopping is not too bad but if going end Oct, don't think there's much to buy. Winter coming, right?! Sigh, I don't have many leave left. I probably need to take advance leave for my year end trip.

Hi Serena,
Yes, yes, Hawaiian is a must-have and all-time favourite! I have packed the map in my 'party bag' already.

Hey, I went Taiwan in Oct too. Bring along umbrella.
happy.gif
And I had really good buys, and cheap, haha, bargain like mad. I didnt go to the malls, except the hypermart. So much more to see than Giant/Carrfour.

One the must go places in Taiwan - Ye Liu. Simply amazingly! I think about 2hrs drive from Taipei. Let me try to shrink my pictures. It's just rocks but the erosion 'created' mushroom lookalikes rocks, candlestick etc. There's the famous Queen's Head. Hehe, forget Yang Ming Shan.

hi serena,
i mean either 1 or 2 kiddo lah
happy.gif

still pondering if i should bring the little one along hmmm...
what "fire"? candles? i've lots left over from the mid autumn festival. not as nice as birthday candles though
happy.gif

Serena
Can't make it for the party. Too far away and difficult for me to handle both of them alone with public transport. Surgeon advised against running and extreme play for another week and I don't think Benny will just stand around and watch. He's a hardcore player.. hehe.. Next time perhaps. Enjoy yrselves, mummies and kids.

Visiting Taiwan is my next "target" if financial permits. For now, we'll stick to BKK. Going on 11Nov for a week with my PILs. Will be staying around Khao San area for a change and planning to visit zoo and Dreamworld. For those who has visited Grand Palace, do you know that they only charge tourist and not locals? The first time me and my dh went, in order to sneak in free, we greeted the guard supposed to collect ticket "sawadee kup" and we saved 400Bht.

Wa Joanne! Then you need to teach your kids to speak "sawadee kup". Ha...good for you. I suppose you're going to si mi hood to pray? You know most of my house decor items are from Thailand. I always complain to my husband like going back to a temple. Fancy still going St.George church every Sunday.
He always say "you women are so one track mind. Always looking at things in one way, blah blah blah.... Anyway don't want to bore you further. Have fun in BKK.
