The Swimming Pool Library

Thu Oct 28 Sun Jan 23

Acclaimed multimedia artist Brian Gothong Tan challenges the definitions and stereotypes of masculinity in this multimedia installation and performance. Inspired by Alan Hollinghurst’s bestselling novel of the same name, it reflects gender traits and alternate subculture conversations that remain relevant today, as they did in 1983 London.

In the immersive, multi-sensorial installation, Tan will take audiences on a less- conventional coming of age journey where society’s labels of gender and sexuality do not necessarily apply.

The exhibition is split into various chapters that mark milestones in a rite of passage, reflected through Tan’s intimate, surreal lens. Paper sketches, paintings, 3D printed sculptures, 3D film photography and DIY books evoke memories of a boy trying to make sense of who he is, and where life will take him.

Complementing this is a live performance specially choreographed for the camera and performed in-situ at 72-13, while simultaneously live-cast over the internet.

Karen Tan, Umi Kalthum Bte Ismail, Azizul ‘Izzy’ Mahathir (a.k.a. Vanda Miss Joaquim), Lian Sutton, Irfan Kasban and Ronald Goh
