Win the Apple Swift Student Challenge, and you could get to visit Apple HQ in Cupertino

Apple has a Swift Explorers programme that is open to students from primary school age in Singapore. For aspiring developers and creators who are a little older, there is the Swift Student Challenge, where students build an app playground that can be experienced in three minutes, focused on a topic of their choice. The Challenge, which started in 2020, gives students an opportunity to showcase their creativity and build real-world skills as they code and build apps.

Applications are now open till 25 February 2024, and students 18 years and above in Singapore can submit theirs independently. Those under 18 years of age will need parental consent.

The app playground must be built with and run on Swift Playgrounds 4.4 or later (requires iPadOS 16 or macOS 13.5, or later) or Xcode 15 on macOS 13.5, or later.

Win and Visit Apple HQ

Challenge winners receive a year of membership in the Apple Developer Program, a complimentary voucher to take an App Development with Swift certification exam, and a special gift from Apple.

What’s more, 50 “Distinguished Winners” with outstanding submissions will get to visit the Apple HQ in Cupertino for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

But whether they win or not, taking part in the Swift Student Challenge is a great way to build experience, gain knowledge, and learn new skills.

Last year’s winners created apps to support mental health, enhance study experiences, introduce cities around the world, and even environmentally sustainable laundry practices!

If your child is still looking for inspiration, these tips from past winners may help:

“Write everything down and do a huge mind map. It’s impossible to find the perfect idea straightaway, and it’s much easier to brainstorm 20 ideas and choose a few to go off on! Not all ideas are great, either. Don’t be afraid to change your idea if it doesn’t work out well on the first try.”

Jiang Tongyu, 17, Swift Student Challenge winner (2023)

“Find a community: Finding student communities around is incredibly useful as you can share information, help one another, and find friends with common interests.”

Jia Chen Yee, 20, Swift Student Challenge winner (2020 & 2021)
