Tomorrow sees the first day of Phase Two of Singapore’s post-Circuit Breaker reopening. Even as we rejoice that we can once again meet up with friends and family, albeit only in groups of up to five at a time, it’s even more crucial that we don’t let our guard — or masks — down. But first, a quick reminder: Masking up at all times is still mandatory when you’re outside your own home. First-time offenders risk a $300 fine if caught without a mask. Only babies under two years are exempt. Enforcement will be flexible for those with difficulty wearing masks. These include children with special needs or adults with medical conditions in which wearing a mask may result in breathing difficulties. They may wear face shields instead.

Ifeoma is a cancer research scientist of Nigerian descent who now lives in Singapore. Independent Market started as a curation of stalls in an annual Christmas pop-up at VivoCity. Its presence now extends to brick-and-mortar and online stores, but remains the place to find quintessential Singaporean goods. These masks may look pretty basic, but they’re treated with antimicrobial and water-repellent agents that last for 100 washes. When Singaporean dad Keenon Lee realised that surgical masks were in short supply as the COVID-19 situation escalated, he decided to do something about it. And 1929 Mask was born. They were made by local apparel manufacturer, Ghim Li Group, in collaboration with NTU. They’ve since been busy working on ULTRAMasks specifically designed for kids. Uniqlo *NEWS*
We couldn’t leave out the biggest mask news of the week. Yes, everyone’s favourite Japanese fashion retailer will be launching their much-anticipated Airism face masks in Japan tomorrow, 19 June. Which means it shouldn’t be long before we see them in Uniqlo stores here too. While only available in white so far, the breathable Airism material will be a godsend here in tropical Singapore. Stay tuned for updates!
Update: Uniqlo Singapore has announced that the Airism masks will be launched in-store and online on 24 August. Available in both black and white in S, M, and L sizes, they will retail at $14.90 for a pack of three.

DIY Face Masks for Kids and Adults
While waiting, consider upcycling materials around the house to make your own reusable fabric face masks for kids and adults. It’s a fun craft project that you can do with the kids.
