Bring your Kids into the Woods with Beethoven in Nature Tales – the SSO’s upcoming Concerts for Children Production !

Wander into the woods with Beethoven, a friendly leopard, and a talking tree in Nature Tales, the SSO’s upcoming Concerts for Children production

Is that a bird? A squirrel? A cat? No, it’s a talking tree! Get ready to be enthralled and delighted this November as the SSO’s Concerts for Children brings Beethoven’s well-loved Symphony No. 6 (‘Pastoral Symphony’) to kids – with a surprisingly whimsical twist!

Childhood experts confirm that listening to classical music provides great benefits for a child’s mental development. Indeed it does, and it is never too early to teach your children to love and to appreciate classical music. What better way to introduce it than with puppets, which kids of all ages adore?

Bring your child into the woods to join Leopold the Leopard and his best friend Tree, a – what else? — talking tree. They’ll go on a grand adventure though the nature settings depicted in Beethoven’s music. Created by Victor Yerrid, a master puppeteer from the Jim Henson Company, this heart-warming show will be a great treat for kids and adults alike!

Here’s what you can expect from the production:

A One-of-A-Kind Classical Music Experience

The SSO does not usually have puppetry in its concerts – in fact, it’s the very first time that muppet-style puppets (with a soft foam body and round Pac Man-shaped mouth) will be joining the orchestra in action! Hence this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to watch music being brought to life through puppets. See if you can spot the two puppeteers! They’ll be hiding behind the tree and hedge in the set to manipulate Leopold and Tree.

Puppetry Wizardry

Because the show is created by master puppeteer Victor Yerrid from the Jim Henson Company (best known for the Muppets), you can be sure to see life-like, expert manipulation of the puppets that will get children (and the child in every adult) intrigued, absorbed, and engaged. In addition, Yerrid is also a veteran of children’s television, having worked on shows like Sesame Street, Hannah Montana and Bear in the Big Blue House.

Nature through Beethoven’s Eyes

Beethoven, who lived his adult life in Vienna, hated the city. The German composer moved to the countryside each summer and enjoyed long walks in the country. His 6th Symphony, which this concert is set to, evokes the natural surroundings that were his inspirations. Described as a piece that “brims with gentle, poetic beauty and affirms the sheer splendour of nature and life” (source: Classical Notes) it is a perfect introduction to classical music, especially for younger children. Ask the kids if they can hear the rustic sounds and folk tunes in it!

Visual and Auditory Enjoyment for All in the Family

There is no admission for infants-in-arms. However, all Concerts for Children are suitable for children  four years and above.
