17 NEW Must-Try Delectable Street Foods at The Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar 2017
We braved the downpour yesterday to bring you this list of 17 fresh eats worth sinking your teeth into (or sipping) at this year’s Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar.

The holy month of Ramadan has begun for the Muslim community here in Singapore and around the globe. Our little red dot’s Geylang Serai precinct commemorates the special month by being decked out in eye-catching light displays, playing host to traditional Malay cultural performances, and serving as home to the annual Ramadan Bazaar where a plethora of mouthwatering culinary creations await!
The SingaporeMotherhood team braved the rains yesterday afternoon to suss out the brand new eats awaiting visitors at the Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar this year. If you were under the impression that the bazaar is all about Ramly burgers, you couldn’t be more wrong. It’s about time you took a trip down to Geylang Serai this festive season to get yourself acquainted with all the uber cool gastronomical delights then! But before that, are you aware of the significance behind Ramadan? Here are some quick facts about the most sacred month of the Islamic calendar:
- Muslims fast from dawn to sunset everyday during Ramadan; it is meant to be a time of spiritual discipline
- During Ramadan, Muslims have their first meal of the day well before dawn – this lasts them till sunset
- Despite fasting throughout the day, Muslims are still expected to go about their regular everyday routines during Ramadan
- Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or menstruating do not have to fast but they will make up for the missed days after Ramadan
- Prepubescent children are not required to fast though some fast for half a day to start training themselves
- The meal eaten by Muslims after sunset to break their fast is known as iftar and literally means “break fast”
- Dates are a common food during iftar as they are sugary and easily digested to provide energy for the body
Speaking of sugary food, you’ve got to try these 17 yummy street foods (and drinks) that are new on the menu at this year’s Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar!
1. Fairy Floss
If you’re all about rainbows and unicorns, you’re gonna dig this sugary creation. Fairy Floss, a first in Singapore, is essentially colourful candy floss rolled up in a crêpe of a contrasting hue. Sugar rush guaranteed.

2. Chicken Scotch Eggs
Prefer something savoury? These halved Chicken Scotch Eggs served with prawn crackers and homemade seafood barbecue sauce will leave you wanting more. A similar version with beef is also available.

How much: $5 for two halved eggs
3. Butterscotch Float
Fans of all things butterscotch, rejoice! Here’s a beverage that will quench your thirst on a humid night while also satisfying that sweet tooth of yours. This Butterscotch Float will make you a frequent visitor to the Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar!

4. Sweet Kiss Meringue Cookies
These little gem shaped morsels appear harmless at first sight, but bite into them and you’ll be breathing ‘smoke’ out through your nostrils like a dragon thanks to the wonders of liquid nitrogen. Hence, these cookies are also fondly known as “Dragon’s Breath”.

5. Handsome Burg
What’s better than a burger? A burger constructed with buns in the colours of a rainbow, of course! The Handsome Burg isn’t just Instagram worthy – it tastes as good as it looks. The succulent beef patty makes it a hit with foodies who take their burgers seriously.

6. Thai Milk Tea Soft Serve
Bless the creative minds behind this wonderful dessert which combines the goodness of old-fashioned soft serve ice cream and the lovely flavour of Thai iced milk tea. This Tra Mue infused soft serve ice cream is served with crushed honey cereal flakes in a four ounce cup.

7. Rock Melon Bowl
As its name suggests, this dessert comprises half a rock melon for a bowl, a generous serving of soft serve ice cream, Milo sprinkles, bits of jelly, and coconut sauce that comes in a syringe for a fun (and perhaps messy) touch. Hey, fruits are healthy, right?

How much: $13.50
8. The Raclette Set
Pan-fried baby potatoes, gourmet chicken sausages and super gooey raclette cheese make up the savoury Raclette Set. The cheese, which is air-flown in all the way from France, is torched right before your eyes and scraped off onto the potatoes and sausages. Makes for a great Instagram story!

9. Blue Bandung and Pandan Lychee
Roses are red, bandung is blue, won’t you try this one-of-a-kind drink with me too? Wait a minute – blue bandung? Yes, that’s right. We tried this unconventionally coloured beverage and weren’t disappointed. It tastes just as good as its traditionally pink hued cousin. Oh, do try the other interesting flavour combinations as well. The green Pandan Lychee was my personal favourite!

10. Unicorn Drink
Love all things pink? This is the ultimate beverage for you then. This Unicorn Drink tasted like a much milkier version of the bandung that we all know. It’s perfect for those of you who prefer lesser sugar in your drinks. Rest assured, we aren’t judging you.

11. Keria Viral & 12. Banana Cheese Fritters
Want to indulge in some deep-fried goodness? Look no further. These sweet potato doughnut cakes (left) coated with gula melaka syrup will satisfy your craving for something sinful. If that’s not enough, try the Banana Cheese fritters (right) sold at the same store.

13. The Cosmos
This beverage crafted by Fresh Fruits Lab boasts a cool factor like no other – it changes colour when you shake the bottle! It’s sure to thrill the little ones. We ourselves were very much tickled by the lovely swirls created by the purple Butterfly Pea and Lime flavoured liquid.

How much: $8 per bottle
14. Colossal Churros
Life’s too short for regular sized churros so upsize them when you can. This is basically a giant churro curled into the shape of a horseshoe and tucked into a cup of ice cream. Choose from four flavours – Caramel Pop, Cookies & Cream, Cheesy Berry and Choco Puff.

15. An Chan Lychee
When you’re tired from all that walking around the bazaar, what you’ll need is a refreshing thirst quencher. Take your pick from the An Chan series of coolers by Yummers. We loved the lychee flavoured one (right) that we got to try. There are lots of other fruity flavours available!

16. WickedMallows
These cube-shaped handcrafted gourmet marshmallows come in a variety of flavours and can be mixed and matched to your heart’s desire (three pieces per stick). Best-selling flavours include Sea Salt Gula Melaka, Charcoal Lemonade, Chocolat Ferrero and After 8 Mint. Oh, and they are roasted to gooey perfection!

17. FairyPuff Ice Cream
Say hello to vanilla flavoured marshmallow ice cream sealed within a warm rainbow hued puff – truly the stuff of dreams! The puff is sealed by a special machine that keeps the ice cream inside frozen while the exterior remains warm. What you get is an amazing hot-and-cold sensation in your mouth!
