Teacher Mummies

Tks Jaz & Rin. I emailed MOE HR, took them so long to reply back. But reply not helpful , I am still confused as before.

If I take Sept & Oct no-pay, roughly how much they will pro-rate the connectplan & yr end bonus??

Hi mummies,

Is there anyone interested to teach at tuition centre? Pays $40-60 per session depending on number of students. Each session is 1.5hrs. Centre pays bonus to tutors if centre does well. Location at Thomson CC.

Do PM me the following if keen
1) name and contact
2) yrs of experience n what subjects
3) preferred time slots

Hi everyone, I'm only 5 weeks pregnant but needed to be warded for severe cramps. Gynae gave me 4 weeks hospitalisation leave. I'm due to get my connect plan this year. You think I will get my payout? I think we're entitled to 60 days of hosp leave right? I was reading the threads on connect plan payout and every mummy was talking about no-pay leave, was just wondering if its the same as hosp leave? I've not taken any NPL before..

hospitalisation leave is not the same as no-pay leave. it will not have any impact on your connect plan.

Hanis,

Like what jaz said, hospitalisation leave is not no pay leave.

Even if it's no pay leave, you will still get your connect plan as scheduled ie. 4 years, 3 years, 3 years etc, but the amount will be pro-rated.

Hi all,

I'm so glad the hols are coming. Been up to my neck trying to complete my load. Was pleasantly surprised to get my promotion to the next grade in April.
happy.gif

Think most prob the previous P decided to be kind before retiring at the end of last year. This year, the new P I have is rather young, late 30s. He's definitely more demanding.

Jas and CandyWhite, how are you and your bb getting along? Mine's started walking around 10 months old and she's happily climbing up sofas and chairs now at 13 months plus. Quite tiring running after her when we are out as a family.

Hi sonnig,

My little girl is turning one next mth! Time really flies. Had plans to return next yr but ive got a job offer elsewhere. Not convenient to say here but does anyone know of any colleagues who resigned during npl?

Jas, i'm cfm returning next yr. Already informed my sch
happy.gif
I think i will miss my boy so badly cox he's been so attached to me in this one whole yr. U still doing teaching?

any teacher mummies who is a HOD? Need to know how you can cope. I am reluntantly made a HOD. My P wants me to do it long time but I told him that I will only do it for a year. At the same time, I am apprehensive of the fact that I will not have time for my two kids. ;(

kitty, i will be reporting back in Term 2. Decided to return to teaching afterall.

Tuition becomes a real bore and no social life.

@orangebear
I started mine 4 weeks before EDD. That's the earliest already

Dear teacher mummies,

I am looking for someone to take over my tuition assignment.

Same household two kids. One in P3 (AM) and P2 (PM)

Location: Simpang Bedok

Duration: 1.5hrs each
Frequency: once a week
Rate: $40/hr

Hope to find someone soon pls email me.
Looking at token commission coz i paid commission to agent for this.

HI Jas, thanks for your reply! I am intending to take a few weeks of leave before my EDD just to be safe.

Right now, I am in my first trim and due to taboo reasons, I did not let many of my colleagues know. I had informed my RO about it but it seems that I have to inform the respective heads-in-charge as well if there is any activities which I deem unsuitable for me. I thought P5 camp would be ok as long as I don't join in the activities but later I found out that from my RO that it is better that I don't go. It is also then I realised that the teacher-in-charge has no idea that I am pregnant. I am so confused when it comes to this.. it is such a metal struggle.

Any chemistry teacher out there? Can you continue with your lessons when your pupils are conducting experiments? I am currently put under such a program where pupils get to deal with boiling some chemicals in an air-conditioned room which I do not know whether it's safe for my bb.

Feeling at such a loss now.. hope teachers mummies here can advise me.

Hi all so glad that there is actually a teacher mummy thread!!!
I am a teacher under bond and I just found out that I'm pregnant thru a home test kit. Haven Seen any doctors yet. Can anyone please enlighten me what Shld I do next?
1. I want to find a gynae for all my checkups/hospital/delivery scheme that is heavily subsisdised by moe. Is there such thing?
2. Shld I go polyclinic first since it's free for us and get referrals from there?
3. When Shld I tell my head? Why do ppl keep the secret for so long?
4. If I'm due in october . Can I take my maternity leave in sep'11, oct'11 , jan'12 , feb'12 ? Is it my right to split leave?

Thanks soo much !!! In so confused and am hoping that we as civil servants got more subsidy or privilege in the whole medical process....

hi slapurface,

sorry i can't really ans ur qn 1 and 2. i went private gynae. i heard tt if u go KK under govt, everytime go may have to wait long time (need q up la) and also everytime go, a different doc will c u. like go polyclinic like that la....

3) one main reason y pple keep secret for so long is likewat orangebear say above. for taboo reason. chinese believe so early tell may result in miscarriage. but i wan encourage u to believe in the positive, taht u will be able to carry your baby to full term and deliver a healthy baby!
happy.gif
I guess other people don't wan to tell for thei own personal reasons. For people working in private sector, I'm not sure if telling their boss they are pregnant will cause them to lose their job so they may be afraid.

4) according to MOM rule, we can take maternity leave maximum of 4wks before our EDD. can u split the 4mths maternity leave? according to MOM, you may split the 4mths to 2mths 2mths if your boss permits it. So it depends on whether ur P allow u to split.

Oh thanks for the prompt response !! I am going to polyclinic to check out after school today !! I feel so uneasy whole day in school today.. im like dyingto share the news with my close colleagues but I scared it will spread !!

And also my department is quite small we are all loaded with lessons.. im so afraid that my dpt ppl will be pissed if I tell them! the first thing they think of is sure " die, we gonna be shorthanded ! more work again! " then although tehy may be happy for me inside their heart but practically i will be a burden! I am so scared to see their fake happy response or worse if the give me negative looks straight away !

Hi slapurface,

I went to poly for my antenatal checkups.. minimal waiting.. in fact faster than private. My first child we went to Raffles Hosp and paid a bomb in total..

My second child I decided to go poly... after co-payment I pay like $2 per visit and appointments are made in advance so I dont wait that long.. Mostly within one hour.. but private took like 2 hours or so...

Anyway in polyclinic, the nurse does the regular urine test and height and weight etc.. same as the private side... And the nurses say the same thing, do the same thing except charge a fraction of what private...

except for private the gynae did ultrascan for me every single visit... which may not be so good for the child also... coz ultrasound disturbs the baby..

For poly, I went to a seperate place to do ultrasound and it was much cheaper too...

In total I think I spent about less than $500 for my second child and about $5000 for my first..

Oh ya and later on poly referred me to KK.. I only went to see the specialist twice before i gave birth at 36weeks costs about $50 per visit coz I opted for senior consultant and he delivered my baby... less painful than Raffles too...

Hi Jascris,

may i ask, so u had a very gd experience overall for all ur doctor visits for ur 2nd child?

what is co-payment at polyclinic? all s'poreans entitled to it?

everytime u go polyclinic does the same doctor attend to u?

Hi Jas, Thank you for sharing... but i am still confuse perhaps u can advise me below, I am comparing good option in KKH vs Pte :

Scenario 1:
Check ups with Dr Adrian = $550+
Delivery at Mt A = $1800 cash (after deduct of $2100 medisave)

total= estimated ~$2500 cash
(if I split bills for checkup maybe I still can claim $10 each time??)

Scenario 2:
Check ups at KKH/ poly with my CSC card = How much do I pay?

Delivery at KKH in a nice rm by a good gynae = cash? (can deduct $2100 medisave)

FOr me I think if cash is about the same then I will go pte cos nearer to my house...

but if price is alot more cheaper and very worth for teachers then I will go KKH. Anyway I have gotten the refferral to KKH by poly. Its on 23 Feb, I am so scaredI feel like going any clinic to check today!!

Hi guys I have started a package with a pte gynae . Anyway I almost fainted in school I went to see my gynae he says it's low glucose and I told him I feel terrible constantly worried cos my stomach cramps quite often... He wanted to give me 2 mth mc but I rejected for now... I Thot it would be sp sudden to tell my ro I got 2 mth mc and I won't know how to catchup 2 mth worth of syllabus when I get back . But also my colleague told me that first trimester is the most important I Shld really stay home cos sch and sch work are hazardous I shldnt allow myself to take unnecessary risk ... I'm confused
sad.gif

1. How do I be responsible for my own health and baby w/o being irresponsible in school?
2. We only have 14 mc a yr , if I get the 2 mths what will happen ?
3. Will they count in the mar hol as mc days too if I take 2 mth from now ? If yes Shld I take 1 mth till before mar hol , and another mth after mar hol?

I'm so confused I have a 5 yr bond ... This June I would have 2 yr left
sad.gif

Hi slap, regarding mc.. Anything more than 14 days will be unpaid therefore u will not get pay for 1.5months... And for sure your ranking will be affected. I exceeded my mc by 2 days n my heads gave me D so I didn't get performance bonus.

Regards to teaching once u go on maternity the class will be disrupted coz due to change of teacher. This can't be helped.

Eat well and take doctor's advice if u want a smooth expectancy. If your doctor can issue hospitalization leave then u have 60 days of paid leave

Hi slap,

1) pls do not see that u take 2mths of MC then it means u r being irresponsible to school. if u really need to rest, just take. don't bother what school or whoever says. my fren told me this. syallabus, can get someone to help me teach, give birth to baby, who can help me? s'pore birth rate very low now. we are doing our part to contribute to our nation also, ok? haha...

2) i thot got 30days paid MC and 60days hospitalisation leave but the MC is subsumed within the 60days of hospitalisation leave.

30days mc is for old scheme. If u have served 3 yrs it's same as me under new scheme we have only 14 days mc..

slapurface,

I didn't see your post earlier about the query on KKH.. well I went to the most expensive senior gynae at KKH and stayed in a 4-bedder paid like $700 cash I think and received rebate of about $800? so didnt pay at all leh... thats for normal delivery and if you opt for one bedder gotta pay $200 more I think... can't remember the exact amount

caesarsalad,
I don't see the doctor much at poly coz no ultrasound done. Most checks are done by nurses.. which is the same case at private. The nurse does the routine checks like BP, urine test etc.. I only saw the gynae at private each time coz he did my ultrasound.

At poly if you need to consult a doctor, you can request for the same one each time, just have to inform the counter. Poly doctors are those quite young ones but they are quite knowledgeable and they will check things for you if you need to find out. Good experience thus far.

For teachers you pay 15% of the bill. My bill each time was $11.. so that is less than $2 as compared to the private about $200 each time include ultrasound..

But ultrasound isnt necessary for every visit.. it's only you get to see how big the foetus is.. that's about it..

I supposed I have experienced it for my first child and pretty experienced in that aspect so I didn't opt for that kind of premium for second child.

Also, I am considerably young and less prone to complications and had a very smooth first delivery.. that's why I decided to just go poly which is walking distance from my home.

hai... so gek sim... I m so worried of miscarriage... i just feel like lying down and don't move... I feel so weak when I carry things and when I shout today... I feel so fragile...later got 4 periods back to back again...

Hi Jas, how come got $800 rebate?? is it for teachers only?

Slapurface, if your husband can support u then u can take the mc to rest..

My rebate coz they estimated my bill to be higher in the end I had rebate. Quite happy. Not for all teachers. If u take more expensive room and have Caesarian and epidural dont think will have any rebate

Hi slapurface, Just to share my experience. I had spotting when I was 4 mths pregnant n at 6 mths, I had signs of early delivery. Dr said bb was too tiny to b delivered. I was teach p6 that yr. My bb simply can't take the stress I was going thro. I felt very guilty for my pupils but I know I had greater responsibilty to my bb. It is not just the syllabus or exam. His life was in my hands. I bed rest for close to 3 mths n SCH got ex Tr to relief me. Now my bb is 1 yr old. All is worth it. A Tr is replaceable, but not a mommy.

Hi jas, can share your experience on giving tuition instead of teaching? Why did u give it up in the end? My boy is one. Hope to spend more time with him but work is super busy. Back home at 5 plus everyday. Very little time with him. Am considering the option of quitting to give tuition so that can spend more time with him.

sunnydaz,

I spent about a year giving tuition.. Let me give you the pros and cons

Pros
Pays more for beginning teachers like myself
Not much marking to do
No lesson preparation

Cons
1.No colleagues to chat with, most friends are busy when I have no tuition
2.Weekends are burned (I had to teach on both Sat and Sundays.. Simply find it hard to reject students and nearer to exam dates parents request for extra lessons). If you opt out of weekends then there is a limited amount you can earn.
3.No bonuses and reduced income during school holidays and public holidays
4.No medical & dental benefits (Not much for new scheme but it's better than nothing)

At the end of the day, for myself I need a stable income and I think teaching offers that. Tuition really depends on your luck. If you get motivated students, it's really worth going but other wise, it's a nightmare. Imagine 2 hours of facing an unmotivated child who just wants tuition to be over.

I passed alot of students away in the end to prepare to get back to teaching

Thx for sharing . I jus saw my gynae . Have to go hospital check most prob will get hospital leave .. We have 60 days right ? How come moe state 30 days ?

hi slapurface,

you should really take a break if u can't endure the work in school.
like what the others say, be a responsible mother is much much more impt than a teacher, they can always find a RT for u. but if cos of the stress and fatigue, your child becomes premature or got some abnormalities, than it will not be fair to your bb. And it'll be too late to regret. (i know of frens who were very 'ON' during their term and their child is affected...)
your child will be with u for life... he probably will tell u he wants you to rest till he's more stable if he can communicate with u...
take care and enjoy this journey! ;)

Thx all for your advices
happy.gif
I have taken 2 mths leave away from school ... Now will just concentrate on myself and baby. Thx
happy.gif
hope when I go back noone will be angry with me . Take care all

slapurface: please take care of yourself! Your baby and your health is more important. There will always be someone else to look after our students, but only you can look after yourself.

Hi I was wOndering abt the working hrs for Aed scheme. Most tell me they have to be in sch by 7am.

Then how can I send my girl to childcare when the childcare usually open at 7am too.

Thks

Sorry to intrude this thread. But I'm looking for a patient and creative chinese tutor for my k2 girl. Venue will be at Bt Panjang. Pls pm me if anyone is interested or you have anyone that can recommend to me. Thanks alot.

Anyone here got pregnant when on part time?

My part time ends in dec 2011. If i deliver on 1st Jan 2012, will i be getting part time pay or normal full time pay?

Anyone can advise?

Hi mummies,

So glad to find this thread. I am a mummy with 2kids 4 and 2.

Thinking of switching to a teaching career. But heard that teachers are overworked I'm Singapore. Is this true?

How did you manage to balance work with ur family life? Please be candid, as your advice will be really helpful in helping me decide. Thanks.

Hi teaching mummies,

I am MOE teacher currently on No Pay Leave to pursue an overseas graduate program since August 2012. I am due to receive my first Connect Plan payout this December. Do you know if I am still eligible for the payout since I am on no Pay Leave since September this year.

Hi, I'm due next June and am wondering if I can take npl to take care of my DS before my ML ? Hope to hear some advice. TIA.

Hi all teacher mommies, I'm planning to TTC soon .. We have 4 months of paid maternity leave, but some of them say count by days instead (including Saturday and Sunday ).. So is it 112 days? Is it a new rule that all teachers who are going on maternity leave can only go for maternity leave at one shot (4months).. Hate to eat into the dec or June holidays but some thing is hard to plan Sui Sui so won't Lugi and waste my precious sch holiday.

Hi angel_mommy,

Yes. Each month counted as 28 days so you have 28 x 4 = 112 days, including sat and sun, public holiday and school holiday.
You can take 2 months or 3 months of maternity leave then follow by the remaining days. However, this is subject to approval by your principal.

Hi suzc, thanks for your reply.. Why they only count 28 days?? So Lugi on our side. I jus asked my colleagues who went on maternity leave before in the same school..they say our principal only allow 4 months maternity taken at one shot.. So even if coincide with sch hols , it has to be that way.. So sad .. :( I jus had my laproscopy procedure done and gyne recommended to TTC soon after I recover.. But I see that if I try in dec to march, no matter wat I'll coincide with the dec hols.. Unless I try in April but provided I must strike in that same month but I also don't want to wait till April cos gyne recommend to try immediately once I recovered from the surgery.. Sigh..

Hi suzc, thanks for your reply..now I understand how the 112 days came about.. Wish we can have longer maternity leave to care for our baby:(

angel_mommy : Sometimes no choice, better for you to TTC now then wait in order not to lugi sch hols. I'm going to lugi my June hols next year, but I'm happy that I managed to get preggy, so just go with the flow....all the best!

Hi zdubib, yes, I agree.. To be able to get preggy is the greatest blessing. Once I recover from my surgery, I will start trying.. Hope to conceive soon:)

Hi all,

I just wanted to ask if any of you took no pay leave after having baby ? How will this affect the Connect Plan ?
