Hi,

Anybody can provide me with more info on the surgical procedure of hyposadias.

My boy has a birth defect known as Hyposadias. I was very sad when I heard it. Went into depression... Kept on crying for no reason, regretted bringing him to this world cos he has to go thru a surgery when he is ard 12 mths old. I kept asking myself why he has to suffer more than other children... What went wrong during my pregnancy? With the support of my family, I learnt to accept it.

My boy has to go for a corrective surgery when he is ard 12 mths old. I am very worried.

Hi Hong, you are not alone. My son is born with it too n will need surgery when he's 10kg. Planning to let him have the op end of this year. There's nothing you could have done about this, affects abt 1 in 100 boys so that makes it a fairly common defect. What i understand frm his paediatric surgeon is he'll insert a tiny rod that somehow enables the urethra opening to be pushed upwards. Of cos the rod will b removed after the day op if nt hw the penis will grow naturally. A catheter will be inserted in his bladder for a week. Im told not to circumcise cos need the extra skin for the new urethra opening.

Take heart that surgery isnt bad. Csection, lasik, plastic are beneficial types of surgery. I can choose not to do this but i fear the shame he'll get when he goes ns. I had eye surgery to correct my severe squints at 3. Now no more, thk goodness.

Hi luv,

My PD told me that Hyposadias affect 1 in 1000 new born.

Till now, i still don't know the cause of it.

Who is your pediatric surgeon? How old is your boy now?

Hi Hong, the 1 in 1000 rate maybe is when the urethra opening is located at a low position, like near the anus. My pd said he's around 1 in 200 or 300. I can't remember. There are varying degrees of hypospadias, most commonly w chordee.

The cause is most probably genetic. One can't tell for sure. It's certainly nothing you eat or do that causes this.

His surgeon is dr sl cheah. I've met him once. Lovely and kindly old man. My boy is turning 18mths soon. How old is yours?

You don't accept PM. Wanna pm me so we chat via email?

Hi Luv,

My PD also recommended Dr Cheah. But surgery can only be done when my boy is one yr old. My boy is 3mths now. Hence, no need to see him so soon.

Your boy is already 18mths... i hope u don't mind me asking, why did you delay the surgery?

Hi Hong, your boy is still young. My boy went to see him when he was about 2 months old, that's when Dr said to wait till he's 10kg.

I'm delaying the surgery cos he's not yet 10kg -_- He's born a midget at 2.515kg. During the last vaccine jab cum pd visit, he weighed 9.3kg. He's too active. The high carbs diet he has is just enough for his energy level. By Jun he should be 10kg cos he's eating almost adult portions. But Jun my hb will be going for biz trip for 4d3n n i have to care for him and his 4yo brother alone. That's why i'm delaying further till Dec.

Kkh has a guideline on this case that he should be not more than 2 years old when going thru the op. i should have a chat with dr cheah soon.

Dear mummies,

Dun despair... At least the defects can be corrected with surgery... My #1 also had a birth detect (not hyposadias) n had to go for surgery when he was only 3 days old n stayed in NICU for 2 wks so I can understand how u all must be feeling. Take care n God bless

Hi Luv,

I don't know abt the 10kg requirement... oh dear!!!
I went for my boy's 3rd mth assessment yesterday. PD said my boy's weight is belove average (5.8kg). So, i need to pump him up more then...

Do you have a helper to assist you?

Hi yurieve,
Sorry to hear that. How's your baby now?

For hyposadias surgery, need to care at home. I don't know if i can do it. What if due to my negligence, infection sets in? I am scare.

Hi yurieve, sorry to hear what your #1 had to go through. Hope he is fine.

Hi Hong, i don't have a helper but i'll be able to cope

I'd suggest you to talk to Dr Cheah once your boy is 1yo and/or 10kg. He should give you a date for the op. Then apply for leave (if you are working) with you and hb taking turns to learn from the nurses how to handle the catheter etc. If you double up your hygiene level, there won't be any infections. Believe in yourself. Ok we'll chat via PM.

Just found this threat not sure whether still on going.. Glad that I'm not alone.. My son is also born with Hypospadias. At first I was very scare and don't know what causes this condition. Went to see Dr Yap at KKH, she said is bcos the cosmetic that I used. Endocrine disruptors. But I didn't let her to the surgery bcos she prefer to wait until my son after 3yrs old and do at 1 stage. Ended up I went to NUH and seek help from Prof Praba. Prof Praba's view is 2 stages, can do after baby turn 18mths and 2nd stage will be 6mths after that. My son is now 2yrs old and he just did the 1st stage. 2nd stage will be more tedious. I even lost my job bcos of taking leave to look after my son.

Hi iwontbite2, sorry to know you have lost your job. Has your son finished the 2nd stage? My son got his corrected the 1st time 2 years ago and he's now fully toilet trained.

Hi luvagape, my son will go for the 2nd stage surgery this coming November. Hopefully everything goes well. So after your son got his corrected, it becomes like exactly normal?

Hi iwontbite2, his looks perfectly circumcised which is fine by me since less chance of infection next time. All the best for the 2nd surgery.

Hello Mummies, my son was diagnosed with hypospadias at birth too and he is currently six months. Can i please ask what kind of hypospadias do your sons have? My son's one looks like a penoscrotal hypospadias. I'm so afraid to let him to go through the surgery and it will be so heart breaking to let him go through all the pain. I will be making appointments with Dr SL Cheah and Dr CK Sim to get two opinions. Can i also please ask how is the recovery for your sons? Thank you very much!

Hi mummies,
Not sure if anyone still read this. My son just underwent 2nd stage repair for hypospadias. How does it take to fully recover? Or even for the thread to dissolve? As the transparent thread can still be seen on his belly n penis.
Thanks

Hi, Dr SL Cheah from which hospital? KKH?

Hi anyone has a doctor to recommend at KKH for Hyposadias? My boy is 16months, he has mild Hyposadias and chordee. I had a followup review today and the doctor recommended it's mild so no need to go for surgery but the other doctor who saw my boy 8 months ago said she recommend a surgery... so now I'm confused. I'm under subsidized rate so different doctors attended to my son. I will like to know if there is any surgeon recommended at KKH other than Dr SL Cheah @ Gleneagles? I will like to seek another opinion.
I'm worried that that if we do not do it, it will affect my son and on the other hand worry too on the outcome of the surgery since it is a complex surgery.

Any mummy can also share the total surgery cost? Just want to have an idea how much the surgery will cost too. Thank you!

Hi, I can say Dr Yap Is the best in her field. She has great bedside manners plus my Son was already 7 years old when we found out about his hypospadias. We sought 3 opinions including Dr Cheah before deciding with Dr Yap. Dr yap was very frank with me that children with hypospadias should be operated on when they are 2 and below. We had insurance so it was full coverage. As he was older than the usual cases we stayed 15 days in the hospital. His was a full reconstruction. My Son has fully recovered and he is 10 now.

Hang in there!!!

My son was warded in may 2018 for the surgery. Dr yap kkh was the surgeon. He stayed for 10 days because his recovery was poor. Took him almost 2 months for the scalp to drop off completely. Our insurance did not pay for the surgery cos he was born with it. We stayed in b1 ward and the bill came up to $10k to $11k. We could deduct abt $5k from mediasave The rest we paid cash

Can check any doctor recommendation from NUH since I'm going to give birth in NUH and my twin boy is highly suspected to have hypospadias.

Hi

my son has the same condition and we are also waiting for the doc’s go ahead to do surgery. Currently he is three.

although my son wants to be toilet train, his condition doesnt allow it.

Dear mummies, my 11 mo son is diagnosed with hypospadias at birth and he is due for hypospadias repair surgery in jan2020. However he hasnt been putting on weight and he dropped off his percentile, currently 10 percentile, only 8 kg at 11 months. Dr didn't mention anything about requiring weight to be at least 10 kg.im also bringing him for his 12 months vaccinations on 15 Dec. Should I postpone the vaccination? Also, any reviews on prof anette Jacobsen from kkh? prof jacobsen said his hypospadias is mild but still recommended surgery. I'm not sure what's the best age to let him go through surgery and whether it's necessary to put him through surgery since his condition is mild. Read from other threads that Dr yap from kkh is best in the field or another Dr from gleneagles. M conflicted on whether I should find another Dr for second opinion. I had a traumatic birth experience in kkh and m very scared of choosing the wrong Dr again.
