Recurrence UTI + Urine Reflex

My gal has got 3 UTI (Urinary Tract Infections) since Jul to Oct. PD suspect that she might have urine reflex and suggested MCU test to confirm if it is Urine Reflex which might cause scarring to her kidney if not taken care. She had already done Xray to kidney, Ultrasound, blood test etc and so far results are ok.
Appreciate your reply.
We are quite worried for her to take MCU test as she is currently 5 yrs and we are worried that she might be tramatised by the test.... wanted to give her antibotics for long term without taking the MCU test but PD think its not quite right...anyone has similar experience to share...
 


Have you tried cranberry and probiotics? My gal had episodes of UTI 2 yrs ago (but not urine reflex) and taking cranberry extracts and probiotics helped to clear the infection on top of the doctor's medicine.
 
Yes, she took probiotics given by PD and I also gave her cranberry juice. Still she is getting infection and she always complain of tummy pain...
Sometimes tummy pain till she can't walk... But it usually goes away in an hour time..
Mummyto2, so yr child got do any further test after repeated UTI. Thanks sunshine day for sharing... The cranberry juice I bought from Ntuc one, is it good enough? Or any recommended brand?
 
Genbaby, my gal saw a specialist and went for ultrasound scan. I think cranberry juice is not sufficient cos must drink a lot to have effect. That's why I did not bother with juice at all, I gave her cranberry pills cos stronger. Even for probiotics, I double the dosage.
 
Actually my gal had seen 2 PD, but the one that we trust recommended the MCU test instead.
So mummyto2, your child is okie so far after taking the pills and probotics?
Think i'll let her try both as well.

Yes, she's ok now. The specialist said there's no harm about overdosing on cranberry and probiotics as these are not medicine. For maintenance, I still give her probiotics every day but at normal dosage.
 
Hi all,

My girl went for MCU at a very young age of abt 5mths old.

She was diagnosed to hv grade 2 urine reflux. We kept her on antibiotics for 6 mths.

Now, she's coming to 2.. and I am thinking if i shd put her thru another MCU to see if she has outgrown the urine reflux.

Daily, she's taking probiotics and vit C. She eats some cranberries once in a while also.

You with her during the test? Is she conscious? Did she cry?
Is it so fearful as what's mentioned in the search engine?
I guess my 5 years old will be reluctant to go in...
 
ya, was with her during the x-ray. I did not do much research then hence I don't kwn what u mean by scary.

what did happen was, the medical team will inject her sme dye thru her privates into the bladder.she screamed loudly. but I was assured that it's not painful. (I was not present during this step). I am told she screamed n cried coz the nurses hv to restraint her.

after dye is injected. I got to wait for her to pee. then once pee, go into xray.

I was there with her to hold her down.

I can read and see her fear on her face when the pray machine is lowered onto her.

it was over in a few minutes la. and actually quite easy. bit as a mother, seeing that fear on her face was painful.

and now that she is older, I think it will be even more difficult as they are more aware of surroundings already.

Has anyone gone through surgery for the urine reflux? We are going for second opinion this wk and there is a high possibility of surgery.
My boy is 3 yrs old. Just went through MCU and found the problem of his recurrent uti.
 
my boy also has recurrent UTI, he has 2 UTI from month July - Aug , we are not sure if it is recurring or just not fully clear yet. Currently he is treated with antibiotic, and will go another urine and culture test next week
Pd has advise us to treat it first and go for further test after he recovers. I really hope it is only urine infection and not anything else

My boy has 3-4 episodes since 5 mths old. He is now 3. We went to Ang Ai Tin in TMC.
Previously for his first uti, we brought him to kkh due to high fever as we didn't know what happen. But treatment he got wasn't satisfactory and we brought him to pd instead. Never went back kkh again.
We going for nephrologist surgeon at GlenE this wk for second opinion on surgery. It is just so heartbreaking to think that he has to go through that. And also the fear of any damage to his kidneys.
My boy has tight foreskin so initially we tot was the cause of his uti and delayed the MCU. So when he had another infection a month later, pd suggested to do MCU.

Are you going for MCU to check for reflux? How old is your boy?
The sedation didn't work very well and we had a hard time getting him to sleep. And then when the doc inserted the catheter, he woke up screaming and crying in pain and we had to hold him down during the entire process.

my boy was 18 mo when he had it first time last month. Since then, everytime he stopped antibiotic, he got fever again and must take the antibiotic again.
we will go for MCU to check for reflux next month. and also considering 2nd opinion from other pd.

how is Dr. Ang Ai Tin? I visited her 2 months ago because my boy bronchitis. I found her not friendly and impatient to answer our question
 
hi mummies, just wanna to ask what is the cause of reflux? from I read it has 2 things that cause reflux:
1. defect at birth
2. any surgery, injury that put pressure on bladder
is there any other things that cause reflux?

So far Dr Ang is ok for us. She sounds impatient cos she is always busy but her treatment works for my son thus we stick to her. But she does answers questions. Must do it fast though. Lol..
We went to the nephrologist and my son has a grade 3 reflux on 1 side. Most likely will go for surgery. Need to go dmsa first though. Likely cause of the reflux is birth defect.

When you mentioned he has fever, is it uti? Are you doing mcu in tmc? It's harder to sedate them when older so if you want to do it, get it sooner. Better to get sort out cos each time they have uti, there will be some damage to the kidneys.
I regret not doing it sooner as I am really worried the extend of the damage.

he has fever because of UTI. I hv not proceed with MCU cos currently need to treat him first, we might go for MCU next month.
it almost likely that my boy has a reflux cos it is recurrent UTI within one month. It makes me wonder, since the cause of reflux is birth defect, why in my boy case, it doesn't identify earlier. He only has his first UTI when he was 18 mo (which is last month). And everytime he stopped antibiotic, the uti came back within 2 days identified by fever
 
it is really heart breaking to know our children has to go through it. I could not stop thinking about it and always shivering. Hugz to you... keep praying. My our children can outgrow this phase

How is ur child now?

My child started to have uti when she was one yr old. Then the same month she had second UTI. By this time, pedia advised us to have urine culture and kub ultrasound. Th ultrasound showed no findings. Howver we werent able to have the culture since she already started with the ABs and pedia said that it would no longer be advisable to have th culture. Then came the third UTI just after three months. She was treated again with ABs and after that her urinalysis showed clear results. The pedia mentioned to us of vcug reflux test but didnt really pushed us to do the test. She just mentioned it to us. After three months , when my baby had fever i had her urine cheked for urine culture and the findings was klebsellia pneumonia-e bacteria . Her urinalysis was clear and the pedia said its fine and my babys fine since she no longer had fever.. She just said that in case my baby will get another uti, shel use the urine cultur result as her refernce.

I was not comfortable with my pedia cos it seemed to me that she was not giving adequate advice and not really looking into why my child's uti keeps on recurring in just a span of 4 mos she had three utis.

And so i changed to another pedia. Currently my baby has a moderate fever for two days now. Her urine test showed 3-6pus cell and 1.010specifc gravity. Her new pedia said that the results are within borderline. Howver due to her symptoms of fever, the pedia advsed to give her ABs for uti. And now shes on her second day of the ABs but she still had moderate fever this morning.

I am so worried. And dont know the exact thing to do.. Any advise would help.

DD had 2 go through reimplantation as her urine will reflux when she was 2 yrs old.

Our PD recommended us another PD within d same clinic who has interest in Nephrology after DD has her 4th UTI. He requested 4 a few tests and scans... n concluded dat there was scarring in DD's right kidney... Gave us some options n told us 2 go 4 2nd opinion if we wanted.

1 of d option was re-implantation, which we chose after speaking 2 a PD surgeon who operated on DD when she was 4 mths old.

DD is now 5, has 2 go back 2 c him every 6mths 2 make sure everything is okie, n also 4 him 2 remind DD of her hygiene. N since DD has started swimming lesson, he has also provided us advice on how 2 prevent fungal infection on her private area.

She had her im-implantation when she was 2.5 yrs... her span of those 4 is about 1 every qtr since she was 1 yr plus... we find it odd so we asked PD n she agreed dat we needed 2 do more tests/ scans...

So my gal has 2 scars... 1 above her belly button n d other below...
