Psoriasis on nails - Please help

Hi Mummies,

I'm asking on behalf of my friend. Her son is 3 years old and has been diagnosed with psoriasis nails for a year plus. They are currently residing in overseas and have seen many doctors and specialists there. All are of no help. They said there's no cure and only prescribed cream to apply. It's not helping at all. The boy is suffering. Psoriasis is affecting mainly his nails, causing pitting, thickening, and irregular contour of the nails.

My friend is desperate and planned to make a trip back to Singapore to see the specialist here. But she don't know where she should bring her boy to check his nails where it can really help him. If anyone knows of any doctors that is good in treating Psoriasis, please let me know! If you know of any info that can help the boy, pleaseshare too! Thanks a lot in advance!!!

hi snowbelle, my hubby has psoriasis and from what we know, it is not curable. It can only be prevented or controlled. My hubby has the condition on his skin and yes, it will occur on nails causing the same problems that your friend's son is having. We 1st got a referral from Polyclinic and since then, he has been going to National Skin Centre once a week for phototherapy. After every few months he will review again with the doc. I suggest either your friend goes and get a referral from Polyclinic or she can go directly to NSC. Maybe she can take a look at the NSC website and see if there's any senior specialist etc who she wishes to consult.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Kayliz! Does doing phototherapy help? Need to constantly go for phototherapy every week? So far any doc your hubby finds that they are good in this area and recommend? Thanks.

hi snowbelle.. yes initially he has to go twice weekly. then doc will review every few months and when condition improved, he only needs to go once a week and now, he goes once every 10 days. The "intensity" of the light (i dunno what is the correct term) will also be reduced or increased depending on condition. i'm not sure if kids can do photo-therapy though. With phototherapy, the psoriasis will reduce (eg. lesser spots), and also will treat existing spots. But it has to be done regularly. If he happens to miss a session, then everything will come back. Once he was busy with biz trip and couldn't go for a month, end up it worsened and he had to restart everything again (going twice a week) so now he is very consistent. I'm not sure how to determine if the doc is good or not as only way to treat psoriasis is by photo-therapy or topical creams. Doc will only assess and give suggestions. But as your friend's son only has psiorasis on nails, perhaps photo-therapy is not necessary? She will need to consult the doc 1st.
