Premature babies support group

Hi Chewy,
Congrats!! You must be very excited and nervous now.
I brought back my gal at 1.95 kg. I hold her and wrapped her with pink hooded blanket, which was so big her. Very stress and scared and when I hold her on the car,
sad.gif
she was so small. I think for your twin2, his size is already like normal full term baby so car seat or holding should be both ok.

Many Thx all, yes.. counting down to part 1 of home coming soon! And I hope I can balance going to KK to visit Kor kor too in due time. I haven't missed going to KK daily since their birthday except 3 times . Going KK seem to be so routine. And I can't wait for twin 1 to join his brother too.

Hi all, thanks for the prompt replies !

My girl is discharging today and we have been waiting for this day. She will be abt 2.1+kg.

Looking at her tiny body, it will be really difficult to fit her into the car seat comfortably, so will just carry her later.

Her neonatologist will be Dr Agarwal, anyone have experience with her?

Chewy and qster,
Congrats on the return of your babies. Such great news just remind me of the day when I bought Ryan home. I was so happy that I cried tears of joy, he was 2.2kg, so small so fragile...

Congrats to all those bringing babies home!

My girl came home weighing 2.4kg. We propped her in the carseat using rolled up cloth diapers/blankets on each side of her and around her head.

Dr Agarwal is one of the best doctors at kkh, rest assured. Very experienced, concerned and caring.

Congrats to all who are bringing baby home! I'm waiting for my turn too.

Mommies and David,
Any special must-buy items before bringing baby home? Also, what kind of cot is good for preemie babies?

Viman,

What we did was to really clean up the whole house (esp baby's room).

The only baby essential which caught us by surprise was diapers. We bought S size beforehand but baby can only fit into new born size.

Currently NTUC is having promotion for Drypers Newborn diapers (28 pieces) at $6.95 per pack - this is what they are using in KK for my baby.

Thanks, qster.

We use aircon at night. Not sure if it's advisable for baby, even though she's been in zircon at KK for 1.5 months now. Fan better? The kind that can be fixed on her cot?

Hi Qster,

Most babies's tummy are slightly bloated. Tummy should be evenly bloated. If your baby is able to past motion, no vomit, no arching, no pain or discomfort after feeding, should be fine.

Hi Viman,

Early spring cleaning is important. Either aircon or fan are fine. I brought a humidifier for my girl as most of the aircon environment are dry. We usually sleep in a temperature between 25 to 27 Deg C and the RH is 40 to 45% which is still too dry. Recommended indoor aircon RH is between 50 to 70%. I brought an Angelcare monitor from Mothercare to monitor her breathing and movement. I am worried about A&B (Sudden stop in breathing). As for cot, any cot is fine. I brought a "Baby Safe" mattress which has perforate holes. Even if the baby if sleeping face down, they are still able to breath. Cot bumper is a must but no additional pillow, boaster or blanket at least for the 1st year. Any pillow, boaster or blanket will increase changes of suffocation during sleep.

Hi pple..my gal has desats during hourly feeds so she has to b on continuous feeds.can this prob be solved when she grows older?she has no desats when on continuous feeding.anyone has experience on this?

Hi Julbee74,

All our warriors desat one way or another during the feeding/Suction stage. They will overcome this in time to come.

Hi Qster,

Althernative, NTUC.

I hear some not so good news from doc.up to now my gal still has Alot of secretions..she can't swallow yet n she can't tolerate her feeds well.doc says may discharge her in 2 to 3 weeks time n I haf to learn how to do suctioning n feeding her thru tubes. The docs Duno if her swallowing will recover with time.last time her MRI scan shows some part of e brain is brighter.. They guess it could explain y she can't swallow till now. I really upset.. Only know how to cry..

julbee, i am so sorry to hear that. it must be a really difficult time for you. Do you have family support who can help with the tube feed as well? Cos' it will be extremely stressful if you are the only who knows how to tube feed. Has the speech therapist seen your gal?

Need some advice here. My baby Vivian has been home for almost 2 wks. She is feeding sleeping n piping well. However earlier this wk we noticed small red pimples on her forehead n cheek. Ard 3-4 of them so far. She does not seem to be bothered and also does not have any fever or pain? Any one encountered this before.

Hi Julbee,
tube feeding is not as bad as you thought. I just bought my twin #2 home with feeding tube too. He been practicing with speech therapist on bottle without making improvement . His suction is great but he can't coordinate it with swallowing and breathing. Yet, he latch on super well.
Hence, in the end, with his clean bill of health, we decided to bring him home. I thought it was tedious and difficult too .But it's actually not as bad. And I been doing bottling with him a few time a day with pacing ( 5 sucks and resting) after 10 mins resting/ burping for another 10 mins and then completing the bottle if he is up too. If not , the balance milk in take will be given by tube. So far he is doing so much better in the home environment on bottle. Just that it require a lot of patient and learning to watch his face color without the monitor .
I suggest you learn pacing with a therapist / meet the home care team before deciding if you want to bring her home.
I hope the Brain thingy is nothing serious.

Viman.Thanks. We think it could be baby acne too. By e way when u bring ur baby to KKH for follow up do U carry or use stroller? How about the feeding?

David,
Thanks for all the tips!

I'm excited but also nervous about baby's homecoming... The docs have not given a discharge date yet, just waiting for her to put on weight.

Chewy> y is ur baby discharged with tube feeding? Speech therapist has seen my bb twice n e nurse told that they wan to meet me to talk.
E bb docs are planning to discharge my bb in 2 weeks.my gal will b doing the impedance test Tml to chk e acidity level in her stomach.(docs wan know if tat cause her desats)I hope everything is fine so tat we can concentrate on teaching her to swallow n bottle drink well..how long does one bb take to recover so that they need not haf tube feeding?

Julbee74,
he was in SCN for more than 3 wks and still not doing bottle well. He desat all the time on bottle. And having a clean bills of health. Drs are not keen to keep him in SCN just to learn bottling. SLT (speech learning therapist) session daily with him and myself, didn't help improve either. Hence , in the end we had a discussion with the Drs / home care team to bring him home with tube and hopefully he out grow it on his own pace.
So far he is doing better, out of 4 our of 8 feeds on bottle now. He came home with us only last Tues

Chewy guess ur bb is better.my gal is now on continuous feeding.she still can't swallow well thus desat once in a while..how to bring her home like tat?

Viman I see. Ur baby will be going back soon as it is very fast for them to hit 2kg at SCN. Our Vivian was transferred to SCN last time before hitting 1.5 kg n I still remember we were so happy she is out of ICU.

Anyone has experience in baby acne?

chewy
my boy stayed for another 2 weeks becoz he cant co-ordinate sucking and breathing too.. the dr actually wan to discharge him when he hit 2kg, that was 4week after birth.. but they kept him for another 2 weeks coz of this and they nv told/suggest to us to let him home by tube feeding.. he stayed in SCN for 4weeks, 1week in NICU and 1week in NICU step down..

Like to seek advice here. We noticed blue black mark appearing on My daughter ankle area. Is not bruises n she does not appear to be in pain. We thought could be Mongolian spots but hers appear out of a sudden n not from birth. Any one experienced this?

qster, mine too. But he does not seem to be in discomfort so I did not bother with it too much. He is almost 2 yrs old (birth age) and i noticed that the marks are gone.

Lilac. Thanks. Doc said is Mongolian spot which will go away. Her acne also getting better. However after coming back on Mon evening, she only poo once at 6pm till now (Tue 8pm poo a bit size 20cent coin). We are a bit worried as she usually poo 5-6 times per day. Anyone experienced this?

Qster,

If ur bb is taking breastmilk, it is normal not to poo for several days.
Bb poo is very irregular when they are on total breastmilk, but once start solid or given formula they will poo daily.

Just curious, any of ur baby seeing e therapist at KKH? Wat kind of exercise will they teach? After my baby appointment with e Dr Agawal last wk, Dr want us to wait outside his rm n wait for therapist to come but we waited for 20 mins before being told e therapist had
left. Was told to make an appointment but when we went to the registration counter the staff say therapist no appointment just see if need be as they will be hanging ard e area. Anyone can share their experience as quite confusing.

Hi mommies and David,
Sharing some good news - my baby was finally discharged from hospital after 2 months! Her hernia surgery went well and she hit the 2-kg mark.

very nervous about taking care of her without the machine showing the breathing, heart rate and spo2!

qster,

hi, im costa, the starter of this thread..good morning to you...allow me to let you noe wat actually transpired...

if i m not wrong(correct me if i m), during those appts with the neo nat put in charge of yr baby(yours is doc A), a therapist wld come and assess yr child at the same time after the neo nat sees yr bb...For my case, it was in the next connecting room...pbly the therapist left due to miscommunication or wat...

the therapist whom after seeing my son felt that he may need intervention and then my neo nat wrote a letter for us to get an appt with the occupational therapist...that was how my son got the appt..

wat i suggest you cld do is perhaps ask doc A for a letter or else call the department of occupational therapy and ask them wats the next step for you?

hope my suggestion helps as my son is already five and some admin procedures cld hv changed during this few years..

my son's fine motor skills were not so good so he had to go for fine motor skills therapy.....some can be gross motor skills not so good...or perhaps other areas...

i hv lost touch with this board as i busy nowadays...how many weeker was yr child?

hope wat i hv written helps..have a great day ahead..cheers

Hi Viman,

I can sense the joy and excitment in you. Congratulation and home sweet home for your princess. Soon, you will get used to the nite without beep beep beep. Important, baby proof her bed. Cheers.

Viman, congratulations. The first few days at home is challenging for me as there are so many things to adapt to n learn but slowly we get used to it.

Costa, thanks for ur advice. Was just wondering wat exercise I can let my daughter do before her next appointment 1 mth later. My baby Vivian is a 29 weeker. Stayed in KKH for 46 days

qster,

yr baby is how many months corrected age?that means by right if she was born at her actual edd, how old wld she be now?

i may not be correct, but i guess they will check the general stuff that babies her corrected age can do?like for eg, if a five month old baby can lift up her head or smthg then maybe she shld be able to do it at her corrected age..smthg lidat.....

for my son, thk his motor skills not so good, so was sent for therapy for fine motor skills..or for eg, if a baby her age can follow a person;s voice, she shld be able to do it at her corrected age...

i think let her be natural is the best..certain thgs we cant just let our kid do if they are not ready..for example i felt my son like cldnt lift up his head and always drooping but later he was okay....so guess every child has their own pace and development..just let them be..

how old is her corrected age now?

qster, then in that case dun need to have any worry lah....dun nd to train her lah..just let her be...shld be ok

Hi viman, congrats on homecoming! Must be really excited ya? I cant forget the day i brought my boy home too..every details were clear in my mind!

Qster, my boy had done physiotherapy for quite a few sessions in NUH before. I felt that it was good to learn about how to help him to improve his moter skills, but honestly i m not sure how effective these sessions were since my boy still took his own sweet pace to develop physically. He was behind every single milestone, and only walked at 23 months actual (19 months corrected).... Well, but i guess it's worth a try still!

Viman,
it's Great news on the home coming. Hope you are like me - enjoying every single moment despite the hectic and tired schedule at times.

My twin #2 being home for the last 3 weeks. And amazing he did much better than in KK. Today , he is CA 19 days old @ 4.2kg . He came home with the NG tube and after 1 week , he decided enough is enough. He actually pulled it out on his own. And since then on 100% bottling. Though after the last eyes review , he got ROP stage 3 and operation was ordered. Hence, He was re-admitted immediately last thursday for the laser. And in God's grace and blessing, all went well and he is good now
happy.gif

However, sad to say twin #1 though due for home haven't been able to do so. He having liver function issue now due to prolong TPN and some abnormality on the kidney at the last ultrasound. I'm hoping all will be well for him. He had 3 operations so far ( stoma creation and lately stoma closure & ROP Stage 3 laser) Brave boy fighting strong so I'm hoping home coming is soon. Though I'm still figuring out how to cope with another baby.

Btw, any baby taking Neosure milk formula? I have someone whom is able to purchase it at a cheaper price however, a minimum tins are require. If you do want more information, please PM me.

And lastly, due to the lately issue on twin #1 , my supply have since dropped alot. Any suggestion to boost it up again?

qster, my dr is also argawal. What happens for my boy is that usually when nate has an appointment with the doctor, he will proceed to first dr argawal and then after that, naturally proceed to OT (occupational therapist) and PT (physiotherapist) either that or nate will go to OT and PT first and then dr argawal. The nurse is correct when she says no need to make appointment because the OT and PT always there. I think it is standard practice to go to OT and PT for them to gauge how our premmies are doing in terms of their fine and gross motor skills. Though it is good i.e. to have someone professional to check on our babies but I feel that it can be not accurate sometimes. Each individual babies develop at their own pace. Just because they are premmie and sometimes they are slow does not mean that they will surely lag behind. Let me quote an example. My boy was given a pencil and the therapist mentioned that he should grasp the pencil in a certain "correct" way and that I should practise with him at home by letting him draw and write more often. But compare this to a term baby whose caregiver does not stimulate him/her in terms of drawing etc, then does that mean the motor skills will not develop. Granted, I agree that these professional are there to help and I appreciate that alot but at times I feel that they tend to look out more for defiecency (what the baby cannot do) more than accomplishment (what they can do at that age). There are some therapists who are really encouraging and I am thankful to have met them. In conclusion, I reckon it is good to have early intervention but just don't stress oneself overly. Hope this help.

Viman, congratulations!really envious.

My baby is still in special care, for how long nobody knows.my gal is in a situation whereby e docs Duno how long she will stay.she has no health conditions, only issue is her sucking n swallowing is weak n thus can't bottlefeed. Everyday we jus wait for SLT to come.but when they do come, my gal may b sleeping or crying n then they can't do much.66 days le n we r always waiting. Waiting for my gal to develop stronger muscles to swallow n this is a painful journey....

Hi Julbee.

Be patience. Have faith. Doc will know the right moment for your gal to come home. My princess spend 135 days in KKH. It is worth the wait.

Thanks, all!

Chewy,
Do you pump every 3 hours? That is really the most effective way to boost it up again. You can take fenugreek also. Drink lots of water and get lots of rest.

Julbee,
Have faith. Your baby has overcome all obstacles, and she will overcome this too. Just needs time. I know it's tough but have faith that your baby can do it, Jia you! If you ever need to talk/rant, remember this group. I am so grateful to have come across this thread (thank you, costa!!) as it really helped me cope with all the uncertainties.
