Mental health

I thought long and hard before deciding to post something like this because I was afraid of the comments i would get.
I was diagnosed with a mood disorder a number of years back and I am on medication. Despite this, I still want to start a family. My doctors (gynae and TCM) both say that it is ok and safe for me. But sometimes I am afraid of the what ifs.

I feel that the mental health stigma in Singapore is still quite bad. Many people I know all assume that any form of mental health problem = mad/crazy. When in actual fact, I am happily married and both of us have great jobs etc.

So i was just wondering, any women out there who have the same concerns as me? Are you afraid of passing on what you have despite the doctors saying its ok?

There are many mental health problems in this world because of the stress we face. As you have said mental health don't equal to crazy and mad. As long as U know how to seek help it is fine. Infact it is very common among Singaporean.
Yes do start to try for a baby. However do be mentally prepared that it may be a long process trying for one. Some people can strike in few tries and some take longer. So do not be too upset if U didn't see results. Am happy You have a supportive gynae n Tcm. I say go for it. Everyone deserve a chance to be a mum.

if u need to take medication for your mental health, can you stop taking the medicine once you get pregnant? although not all medicine is harmful to babies, no doctors can guarantee there is no self effect on the babies especially on the first trimester. i know that some people have to stop their medication completely and try to fight their mental issues with their own willpower and determination.

i believe some mental issues are genetic which means you may pass to your children, but also no scientific articles confirm 100% will pass down to your children. if your doctors give you go ahead, then why not try to have a baby?
