I engaged a fresh maid thinking that I could train her from scratch. Also thinking good attitude matters. Agency also highly recommended the maid as she can soak English, has good attitude but young (only 23). Now, i am beginning to think of it is the right choice. She can speak but can't understand English. She cannot handle my 2 years old son lest to say can trust her with newborn. Does not know what the children need. She boiled ikan bilis soup.. threw the soup away kept the fish. She washed the wok and used the clean cloth to wipe the back of it..became black cloth. Asked her steam rice dumplings..she sliced the dumplings put in between bread. She said she ironed but never iron business pants before.....etc. not sure if can train or not. Change maid nightmare plus expensive.

language isn't the issue here. Attitude is.
you have to categorized her 'mistakes'.
household/cooking mistake: that's her culture from her country. this can be mitigated.

- how many times she has been guided before you give up? once? twice? take little step. train /guide 1 task at a time.
handle children/newborn mistakes: as long as she can bond w your kids and love them, this can be mitigated.
(She cannot handle my 2 years old son lest to say can trust her with newborn.)
- are you nex to your kid when she is handling him? kids are v smart nowadays. mummy is around, then of course stick to mummy. mummy not around, they will learn to interact to get things done. hence don't under-estimate them (kids). maybe you should watch from a distance and let her do it her way her style?
Language (interaction): language is no barrier to determination. kids (knows english/chinese) and their grandparent (mostly dialect) also can communicate v well. why? if you notice, either one will try to understand and their the other's language. hence human can adapt. no worries on that.
as for yourself, keep an open mind. look-out for good attitude. if she has it, then she is worth the your time to teach. if not, even how experience the helper is, you can show her the door.

I agree with Mongkok. When you said train, it is not just "tell her to do it". It really means train - a lot of hardwork and patience. You are practically doing things, she should be taking notes.

Second time, you ask for the recipe and method to be read to you. Supervise her doing.

Hi All,
I recently changed to another maid
i noticed that my current maid is lack of tidiness.
for example: like putting back the laundry bag to the original position, she dont bother to put back properly. or even after using scissors or any other cutleries in the drawer, she just simply put back without making sure it is tidy.
even on Sun, she dont bother to tidy up my daughter's bed even she is the bedroom.
Am i too strict on this? i have no issue with my previous maid as she really did a great job for tidiness but this current one is really a headache.
