IVF/ICSI Support Group

I had to delay mine too. I had only one embryo that fertilized normally from my fresh and had to risk freezing and thawing it. But it's a bfp. So don't be discouraged. Sometimes a setback may be a blessing in disguise. For some, it's better if their body has purged all the medication and do a natural cycle.

Keeping my fingers crossed :'( This IVF treatment is turning me into a leaky monster.

Thanks but don't congrats first bah... Results still inconclusive for now. We don't know which way the readings will go. I don't want to be too hopeful so it's easier to pick myself up if things doesn't work out.
Be positive my dear. You need to attract more positive vibes now. Its definately not easy to come this far. So dont give up yet! u have to be strong for your babies as they are fighting hard for you too! Do keep us updated. Will always keep you in my prayer

Thanks to all who's thinking and praying for me.
I rec'd the call much later than expected and composed myself before answering. When told of my result, my mind went blank then I asked "are you sure because my hpt this morning is a clear BFN".
Was assured that the result is accurate and that they have verified with Dr THH and he wants me to go back on Fri for a 2nd reading because of my continuous blood flow so he's rather concerned.
My beta is 73. Dr THH says this is an acceptable reading for 12dp2dt even though passing mark is 250.
However, the fact that I been having moderately heavy flow for 6 days already, I honestly don't know where this is going.
Regardless, I just want to say anything is really possible! I was feeling really gutted actually but I held on to the tiniest hope. This sounds very silly but I spoke to my embies daily. I told them to hang in there, to stay with me and don't give up.
Jiayou to all in 2WW. Sometimes miracles happened when u believe in them.

big congrats!!! miracles do happen! happy for u!

For those who did 2nd fresh ivf in kkh, do we need to q for 2 to 3 mths like the first fresh? Or after review with the gynae, can straight away do on the coming cycle? I suppose don't need go for briefing liao right?
Hi twinkletot! I did my 2nd fresh in Kkivf and yes, gotta wait a few mths too. Unlike FET u can start anytime u like. But the wait is not as long as the first round when u need to go thru all the preliminary tests. 2nd fresh is faster. And yes, they made me go thru counseling again. How silly is that?

Hi there, come to this forum if u need help. We are all here to encourage 1 another. How was yr previous 2 fresh with dr loh?mind sharing your experience or tfc n the doctor?

Thanks connie_hopeful :)
Dr Loh was highly recommended to me by my regular skin doc, Dr M. whose wife conceived last year after her 2nd fresh ICSI under Dr Loh. I planned to consult a fertility specialist only after 6 months of unsuccessful attempt due to my being >35yo (was 37yo).

I was relieved to be treated by Dr Loh as he is very experienced, from what I researched about him and also the way he work and his opinions. My experience at TFC has also made this journey a tad less stressful. I'm always attended by Dr Loh personally for every scan during stims and follow-up. It also helps that I have become familiar and know the nurses and staff by name and they also rem me. I think because I am alway early or punctual for my appts, they seem happy to arrange first appt for me if possible. The waiting area is comfortable and we have TV (CNA) and free wifi. However this is a trade off as I will not be eligible for the gov grant since TFC is private. Given my age, I didn't feel I could afford the queue for treatments at public hosp. Under Dr Loh, I was able to start stims immediately (it was my CD2) when he confirm DH's 2nd SA that we should go straight to ICSI.

All my baseline hormones test and HSG were good and we are dealing with very poor sperm quality and of course, my age factor. I put in much effort to improve my egg quality as only the egg has the ability to repair any DNA damage, hopefully compensate for the sperm issue.

Here's summary of my ICSI journey for your ref:
1st fresh ICSI - Dec'14 (was still working, took HL after ER)
Short protocol (Puregon 300iu increase to 425iu; 10 days stim + 5 days Orgalutran 0.25mg)
21 Retrieved (R), 8 Mature (M)
5 fertilized (F): Grade 1 (1), Grade 2 (3), Grade 3 (1) discarded (grade 1 being best)
D2 transfer 2; froze 2
Mild OHSS, BFN, period spotting started 3 days B4 BT

1st FET - Feb'15 (was still working, took HL continue with no pay leave)
D3 transfer only 1 as the other one arrested - BFN

2nd fresh ICSI - Apr/May'15 (have resigned)
Long protocol (CD21 started Lucrin 10iu; 12 days stim with Puregon 425iu + Menopur 150iu (added on day 5 of stim))
12R, 8M, 4F: Grade 1 (3), Grade 2 (1)
D2 transfer 3; froze 1
BFN, period came after BT

Suffered inter-menstrual bleeding. Dr Loh confirmed no cyst with scan and prescribed Noristherone to help reset my cycle. I refused to have take more synthetic hormone medication. Instead worked with my acupuncturist and took TCM to help recover my natural cycle. Managed to recover within the month.

Started taking DHEA in June at recommendation of Dr Loh (he even advised to get the Life Extension 25mg capsule type). As I have good baseline hormones, he said suffice to take 2x25mg daily.

3rd fresh ICSI - Sep'15
Short protocol (10 days of stim with Gonal F 450iu increase to 525iu + Pergoveris 150u (added on day 5 of stim) + Cetrotide 0.25mg)
32R, 18M, 14F: Grade 1 or 2 (12), Grade 3 (1) discarded
D2 transfer 3; froze 9
2ww in progress

Dr Loh is very conscientious in customising my protocol. He decided that short protocol is more suitable for me and also change the stim drug because my body may have become less responsive with Puregon since the last 2 stim cycles. Dr Loh can be humorous if he feels you are relax enough to chat. However he may appear a man of few words if you do not have any questions otherwise he is very willing to answer and keep you informed to settle your doubts if you ask.

Sorry this long post and hope it addresses your query. Where are you in your cycle now?
I would also love to hear your experience if you can share.

Have faith my dear.. Jia you! Hope to hear good updates from u real soon!

I went for my third scan today. 26 follicles. 10 are good sized ones according to doctor. But I am at risk of OHSS because too many follicles are popping up. Doc says if I have OHSS, they will freeze the embbies and make me go for the next cycle. I don't want!!! :'(

Now I'm feeling slight nausea and had runny tummy. Hope it resolves :'(
Hi, it's actually good to freeze them and do it slighter later when ur body is feeling better. I had pretty bad OHSS during my first fresh cycle and I regretted going ahead with it and wasted 3 precious embies as a result. Do give it a tot. It might not be a bad idea after all. Coz OHSS feeling is very horrible. I remember the pain is so bad I couldn't even stand straight , how can the embies survive when the mummy's condition is so bad?

Hihi! I conceived under Dr SF Loh as well during my 2nd FET. I like his style and he definitely has magical hands. Too bad he left KKH and I have to switch doc. Hopefully Dr Tan HH can do miracles for me as well.
Here's wishing u all the best in your 2ww and hope to hear good updates from u too! Cheers!

Twinkletots if your 1st cycle is with Kkh. After dr review, dr will advise u. Earliest u can do again is after 1cycle of mens to clear out all the previous med n Tiao your body. Some sister use that mens cycle to try it out n got bfp. Cos our body still have the med in it. Bb dust to you

I know... I will just follow whatever the doctor tells me to do. It's just very frustrating. I was hoping and hoping and hoping that I could have a bun in the oven by my birthday in October. Ok... it's just me being whiny. Thanks for your sound advice. I will bear in mind.

Keeping my fingers crossed :'( This IVF treatment is turning me into a leaky monster.

littlemonkies i feel you.

I had mild OHSS in my first fresh ICSI. Boy it was rough so I really tried ways to prevent it as much as within my means for my latest cycle. Somehow it worked for me this time. Had 32 eggs retrieved but no OHSS and was event the most comfortable fresh cycle i ever had.

I hope you dun mind me taking the liberty to share what i did and i hope perhaps it helps you too. I was having 2 whole eggs daily before stims and continued so. Also resume my intake of avocado (about 1 quarter) daily starting from stims and continue so. A few days before ER, I increased this and added 2 to 4 egg whites. Starting on ER day, I have at least 2 whole eggs + 4 egg whites. I also try to include fish or chicken in my meals. I stopped taking milk or anything heaty (except dash of cayenne pepper) as I do have mild constipation and these do not help with bloating. Now it is 5 days post ER and 3dp2dt, as I feel my ovaries swelling have subsided well and I reduce back to just 2 whole eggs daily and may additional intake as cooked in part of a dish. Other than that a balanced diet is key.

Please try to think positive and know that you are not alone k. Lots of love!

Do what u think it's best for you. Listen to ur body. Hey, my birthday is in October too.. !! All the best to u!

Hi twinkletot! I did my 2nd fresh in Kkivf and yes, gotta wait a few mths too. Unlike FET u can start anytime u like. But i didn't have to go through repeated counselling. We are referring to the group briefing right? So silly and waste money and time to do it twice!

Is there anyway to reduce OHSS?

Hi, are we allowed to do fresh when we have frozen embbies? I remember i heard during counselling that we have to utilized all the embbies before we can start another fresh if we are to use gov grant. Not 100 percent sure tho. Anymore input regarding this? I think its best to check with kkivf before making any decision.
Hi Bbelieve, yes u can do another fresh even though you have frozen embbies. My doc advised me to keep my frozen embryo and do the last fresh to get younger eggs rather than delaying it. Partly also because I have only 1 frozen embryo so no point delaying it.

Thanks to all who's thinking and praying for me.

Hi DawnBB, as i do not qualify for grant... may i know how much it cost to do a fresh ivf at Dr Loh at the TMC?Thanks!
HI wonderful joy,

I have a 5 year old who was conceived naturally then along the way there was no luck.so I did my first IvF with Dr loh and the cost is between 12K to 15k.bit again these exclude medications and Consultation . Thomson medical is a private hospital so there is no grant for all of us unless u are with government hospital
I'm due in a few weeks time.and please go ahead and try to be patient All my friends who went to him conceive in a matter of time.

Hi scattermum, thanks, it is encouraging to know successes indeed happen with the same doc. Guess I'm just waiting n hoping for the moon and stars to align.

Hi wonderfuljoy, each fresh icsi cycle at Thomson Fertility Center averages about 12-16 k inclusive of medication, scans, consultations, blood tests, egg retrieval n transfer procedure. Note that this will likely exceed beyond 16k if eggs retrieved are more than 15 eggs and if you have more viable eggs to freeze.

Scattermum mentioned the average excludes medication n consultation. However I rem my bill total, all inclusive, came up to about 13k, 16k n 20k for my 1st, 2nd n 3rd fresh cycles respectively. And yes, no gov grant but can only claim Medisave up to 15k max if u r SG citizen.

Is there anyway to reduce OHSS?

Hello pammm. What I mentioned previously was focused on prevention. Do you have OHSS? Hope not. After the ER, the nurse did advise to ensure that I drink at least 2L of water and eat lots of protein, best at least 6 egg whites as that's the most protein rich whole food. She also suggested that I can drink 100plus to ensure electrolytes balance. I didn't drink 100plus but added bit of salt to my daily prune juice instead. On ER day, I also followed TFC's guideline to drink dried longans n smashed ginger boiled with water. This is to ease bloatedness as the follicles will be swollen. I'm most concerned with preventing constipation too so ate apple, kiwi and drank prune juice to ease my BM.

I believe every part adds up to help. Hope all goes well for u!

Started to have fresh red blood flow gushed out this morning after several days of dark brownish red flow...
Been having heavy menses like cramps on and off since 3 days after transfer too
Hiaz...
Nevertheless, continue to be positive everyone.

Hi DawnBB, did you add red dates or black dates to your dried longans drink with smashed ginger?

Go to clinic D & ask to see dr tan. He will oblige. But maybe u want to call clinic D to see if he is in KK today. I remember one of the weekday (likely to be tue) he might be at Khoo teck phuat hospital in the afternoon or whole day.

Hi DawnBB, did you add red dates or black dates to your dried longans drink with smashed ginger?

Hi Wynn0404,

the guideline only specify ginger and longan, no red dates. This is more for reducing bloatedness and not for maintaining warmth. (There are other ways specifically for supporting uterus warmth during the cycle.) I asked the nurse and my TCM doc and both advised to avoid red dates the few days before ER and after as they may cause too much heatiness and worsen constipation.

Hope this helps and may all go well for you :)

Will be praying very hard for you. Stay strong. Hugsss

Just saw doc and did a scan. Spotted a sac and something in it... No heartbeat yet coz still very early. I had no expression on my face so doc asked me why I'm not happy at all. Well, maybe still early so am worried still... So the only thing now is wait and pray.

That's good news! Be positive and talk to your little one. When is your next appt?
I'm going for my first scan only next Friday.

Happy to see good news here.
Keep fighting spirit on and do not give up.. has brighten the forum here in some way.
I may not have the chance to shower good news to you. I wish all best. keep moving with open heart.
Teddy75, how are you doing now?

EDD should be 17 May based on the online calculator. But I'm going for my scan only next week so yes, I'm not sure also. Quite nervous actually. :-/
Hi @the_spinsterella Which online calculator did you use? And did you count from LMP or ET date? I tried both dates and gave me different results. If I use LMP, I should be due on 21 May. My scan is also scheduled for next week... Friday. It's another long wait...

I used http://www.babycenter.com/pregnancy-due-date-calculator.
Should use the LMP. My dr said shd be based on LMP.
Yah, it's a painful wait, right? Mine is supposed to be next Monday but I can't make it so had to push it to next Friday, which extends the waiting period! :-(
I'm quite scared of every pain and keep checking if got bleeding etc cos I'm scared of ectopic.

Oh no! I just took milk! But thanks very much for your tips. I will desperately do what I can before my extraction tomorrow... Maybe I'll squeeze 10 egg whites into me! How do you take the avacado ah?

Thanks very much for your useful tips! Hope the bean sticks!

Wynn0404, and ladies, just want to add on as I just read some previous posts re qns on red dates and pre-IVF prep.

The ginger and longan drink guideline i mentioned previously is for after egg retrieval. If you are looking to condition your uterus and prepare for IVF cycle, best start at least 3 months before the IVF start.

You need to confirm the starting condition of your uterus and ovaries first and along the preparation period, monitor the overall health condition (whether heaty, damp, cold or any sickness) as there are different foods appropriate for specific condition. E.g. before IVF cycle, if my body not heaty, I will drink longan, red dates + wolf berries (without ginger as boiled ginger should not be taken daily for long term while it is ok to have a bit daily but fried as in a chinese dish) moderately but I stop when starting stims. I also always have 八珍 once a month but stop during IVF cycle. Now after embryo transfer, when I don't feel too heaty or badly constipated, I resume drinking the longan, red dates + wolf berries mix but very moderately. No chinese medicine food at all, only acupuncture. During stims, I have double boiled black beans soup (with pork bone & ribs, black fungus, garlic, ginger and a honey date/ 蜜枣) but note this is not suitable for women with cyst/fibroids/PCOS/endo condition.

I have started TCM consultation with acupuncture after my first failed ICSI and have since continued till now. I learned a lot from my TCM doc and also confirm based on research. If you have sickness, TCM seek to treat before conditioning or conditioning to complement western treatment. When you have treated any sickness, you should have a balanced baseline (regular cycle, ovulating cycle, healthy womb plus overall good health, without over heaty or damp or cold). Thereafter I would advocate that the objective of lifestyle and diet is to maintain balance plus actions/ foods that complement IVF treatments. After that, they are foods to complement IVF cycle to help body cope with the strong stims medication and rough procedures, then to support luteal phase bearing in mind that estrogen and progesterone medication will already be taken.

TCM consultation & treatment is expensive but it has given me a lot of assurance that I am doing things right and weekly checking that my body and reproductive system is in apt condition. Even for DH, while there is no specific medication or treatment that guarantees that his sperm quality can recover, TCM has indeed helped in his overall health. His health has deterioted since starting high BP medication which he cannot stop and used to fall sick every other month. He took longer to recover whenever taken ill even with antibiotics. Since starting TCM to complement a conscious healthy lifestyle, he has only caught throat inflammation once and recovered speedily without antibiotics.

For my prep, I found info from 2 books assuring and reliable:
1. "It Starts with the Egg: How the Science of Egg Quality Can Help You Get Pregnant Naturally, Prevent Miscarriage, and Improve Your Odds in IVF" by Fett, Rebecca
2. "Feed Your Fertility: Your Guide to Cultivating a Healthy Pregnancy with Chinese Medicine, Real Food, and Holistic Living" by Bartlett, Emily

I wish I have know more and have started doing much more even before I started my first ICSI. But I really didn't know what i was getting into until this journey started. Once you get into IVF, egg quality is really important as it is the only factor that determines the ability to repair any DNA damage and any hope for compensating issues with the sperm, and also up chances for implantation.

it is hard when people assume that if you are dealing only with male factor, sure more easily succeed with IVF. Actually it's tough either way. Even my parents cannot understand why need to go through ICSI since only sperm issue. They insist that just try naturally sure can conceive anyway. As they are not supportive, while I know they are worried of the side effects on me, I refrained from sharing with them too much as it is hard to see their disapproving look. As time goes by, the isolation increases as you start to only find out indirectly your friends' pregnancies or deliveries, and fewer and fewer friends connect with you... Fortunately there is this forum where I found strength from ladies who get us.

Sorry long post and I'm getting emo. Anyway, I am still waiting for the stars and moon to align to get my BFP. While not yet there, I have seen positive improvement in my egg quantity and quality (fingers cross for embies to stick). As I have benefitted from your advice in this forum, I do hope I can contribute to help in anyway.

Jia you everyone!! :)

Hello littlemonkies, glad this is useful for you.
Haiyo, 10 seems too much and you may get too grossed out to continue next day. Maybe 8 should be good and you can start to ensure at least 6 egg whites starting tomorrow. I always have my egg whites cooked to 70-80% in boiled (not boiling) water. At this rate, the whites are cooked till white (nothing raw transparent runny) but still soft and the egg yolk is cooked, still bit soft inside. I take 2 whole eggs and the rest just egg whites. I don't always eat the egg whites on its own but take them as side dish with my rice or congee in a meal.

You won't believe this. I do not like avocado at all have tried to find ways to take it. Worst is have to take raw, sigh. My current daily fix is part of my breakfast.

Mix together:
1 quarter avocado, diced small cubes (I prepare diced whole avocado and store them in the fridge mixed with chopped spring onions)
Half slice of cheese, cut into small cubes (i just use Devondale original sliced cheese) -sometime replace with naturally dried fruits if I have
Pinch of finely chopped garlic (optional)
About 1 tsp of finely chopped sweet basil (organically grown by my parents, if available)
1 or 2 brazil nuts, 2 walnuts, 2-4 almonds (smashed or roughly chopped)
Half or 1 tsp of organic balsamic vinegar
Season with bit of salt and pepper to your preference

I can eat this on its own or as topping on water table crackers with my daily 2 whole eggs for breakfast. It helps me to cover the needed avocado and nuts intake recommended to support implantation.

All the best to you! One step at a time ya. Wish you a smooth sailing ER tomorrow.

Hi all.. I failed my 1st fresh cycle in Jun and now planning to do FET in dec. I have 5 frozen embryos with 3 grade 4 and 2 grade 3. Doc suggested to thaw all and do blastocyst. Is this a good idea? I'm afraid none will survive on day5..

hi sisters, I've been a silent reader for a while, just got BFN from my first fresh cycle :( I have 2 frozen but am wondering should I start FET immediately this month when AF arrives? or wait a while for my body to recover? I didn't suffer too much after ER, only bloatedness which was gone in a few days. But who knows what goes on inside the body... Beans didn't stick as well, sob sob... :(
Doc suggested that there's no issue to do immediately only concern is some people can be too emotionally affected by the last failed cycle so it may not be good. Any input sisters? What do you think?

Go to clinic D & ask to see dr tan. He will oblige. But maybe u want to call clinic D to see if he is in KK today. I remember one of the weekday (likely to be tue) he might be at Khoo teck phuat hospital in the afternoon or whole day.
Hi Char Mee,
I am fine. Thank q for e concern.
Feel that no more chance for me anymore for pregnancy so be it that I still have 2 frozen embryos. Now, concentrate on work and plan B, as Foster parents instead; working on the application . Whichever, will be glad to finish my cycle with my frozen "beans" one more round to close case for my IVF. My review is on end Oct. Shall see how soon can plan me.
Am happy to be able to experience the journey IVF. Life still continue. Fated if God's plan that wanted me to stop at 5. Already super bless.
If as Foster parents success, will continue to shower my love to other kids instead of my own. Another form to contribute to society and same time still parents with additional kids into family: )

Teddy75, how are you doing now?
