Hi, can any kind mother advice me difficut ways of teaching alphabets? No matter how many time we repeat teaching alhabets, my 4yr old daughter still can't remember.

Pls advice me, thanks.

Start from singing ABC song. Point to the alphabets as u sing. Can use board books, fridge magnet or flash cards to reinforce the letters. If u r teaching her phonics, she needs to know not only the name of the alphabet & the sound. One alphabet a day, familiarise her with words starting with same alphabet & play games like scavenger hunt around the house for objects starting with the same alphabet. Do craft related to the alphabet, eg. E for elephant. Get ideas from website like "no time for flashcards" http://www.notimeforflashcards.com/category/letter-e-theme
don't stop there. Read & bring the letters to live. Read books, labels, road signs, magazines
last but not least, have fun!

Hi,

My son's 3 and doesn't do alphabets the conventional AtoZ ways so I am letting him do individual letters in his own time (started off with the more prominent ones like A, B, E, M, S, X etc) and through play. Sometimes invent games so it's more fun/useful for all of us. He seems to learn faster this way.

I also bought foam letters from Value Shop (cheap and can keep spare sets, $2.05 each set). Pictures here here:

I'm not too anxious and prefer to let him learn through playing at home. We're not making things compulsory/routine and it's working well this way - he requests to read/play alphabets rather than we approach him with the resources.

Hope this is of help. Also learning from many mommies on this forum.

ABC Song, and of course try to keep it interesting and show her how it is actually used. Like A is for apple, the show her the apple.. just saying the alphabets by itself might be a lil tough for kids to understand.

And I find that kids like to learn how to spell their own names or family members, friends name so that will help them remember alphabets better I guess

Children learn better through play. I use Vrtech (aka V-smile) console which plugs straight into TV. My son even picks up maths and logical skills without us knowing.

Hi Wasabi,

You mentioned Vtech console - is it durable and which modules do you recommend? My son's quite destructive so we can't make up our minds what to get yet. He already has the Vtech laptop and often taking out the batteries or pressing randomly for sound effects.

Leapfrog letter factory is good! There is a leapfrog fridge magnet, where they also teach the sound when u put the letter on it , this was v effective for my son.. Or dr Seuss book , DVD also not too bad. Or download app for iPad/iPhone, kids are hooked to these now.

For introducing phonetic sounds of the letters of the alphabet, my favourite book is "rhyming around the alphabet big book" by sunshine books. It's very straightforward and children can learn the letters of the alphabet by singing along or reading along the contents of the book. It's also very easy for mummies to pick up the letter sounds as well. :) You can go google this book online. It's a big green book with all 26 letters of the alphabet on the borders of the book. :)

Learning to write the letters of the alphabet needs to be fun and interesting for young ones. Let her practise writing in sand, on a tray of flour or use pipecleaners to form the letters of the alphabet! :) Good luck!

leapfrog is good, but nothing beats spending time with your sign and reading alongside him. and always rmb to have loads of fun :)
