Cooking Tips & Recipe

Krisjoy,
Is Sun Moon Jap the one on 2nd floor of Chjimes? We wanted to do dinner there once, but it was so crowded on a Fri night we couldn't get a table.

How was your cot and baby shopping last weekend? I read on some MTB thread that a shop called Cheong Choon at Chinatown sells baby stuff cheaper than dept stores even when dept stores have sales. Probably something like the one Van mentioned at Beauty World - not much display, but can go to stores to see the model you want, then ring them up to ask them for price.

annlee,
Haha, I remember those tea dance days
wink.gif
... all those retro music!

I checked the GAIA website - so weird, only got products for babies and men, but nothing for women? I just realised that I need to change my shampoo, so was thinking of changing to an organic one, but was afraid that certain essential oils used in organic products are not suitable for pregnancy *sigh - headache* You have any recommendations? Am thinking of Avalon Organics from Nature's Farm or Lavera, but all contains some kind of essential oils.

Just got my final package from VPOST + the dress I bought from the Marketplace in this forum

So all my online shopping done and finished for the time being!
Listening to Baby Bach now... quite soothing

morning ladies....

littlecat,
here's the sugee biscuit recipe.. those in bracket are my thoughts of amending the recipe after that trial...

200g plain flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
50g butter & 150g ghee (i think this can add abt 20g more as my biscuit abit dry)
150g icing sugar (reduce prob 20%, as too sweet.otherwise, use fine sugar instead as icing sugar is very sweet)
150g semolina flour (sugee flour)
1/2 teaspoon salt (i didnt put this in)
1/4 teaspoon almond essence

1. preheat oven to 180degrees
2. sift plain flour n baking soda together
3. place butter, ghee, icing sugar, semolina flour, n almond essence in mixer and beat until dry ingredients are moist. Add in sifted flour mixture and mix well.
4. divide dough into small balls then flatten slightly (flatter liaoz will look like my "flatten fishballs".. can don't flatten also..).
arrange on lined baking tray and bake at 180degrees for abt 15mins.

the above makes about 130pcs small biscuits..

well, i didnt try the kueh bangkit this weekend.. too lazy.. for the first time in a long long while, i simply lazed around the whole weekend.. only did laundry while hubby did the rest of housework..
kao_sticktongue.gif

did feel abit guilty though...

<img>

sophie, i read the brochure says is suitable for everyone and the lady at the booth say adult can use it but for pregnancy only the baby massage oil and skin soothing lotion. Better go and check with the ladies at baby fair. I think if you can use their baby shampoo, will it be too mild for you cos i remembered during my preggie, my scalp is quite oily.

annlee,
Yeah, my scalp getting a bit oily... that's why needed to change shampoo. Thanks for your suggestion - I think baby shampoo definitely too mild. Will go check out those organic brands then. Think essential oils like aloe vera and mint should be quite safe.

sophie, i used a normal oily scalp shampoo during pregnancy, not organic type. The shampoo you mentioned you must check suitable for preggie or not, most essential oil are not suitable for pregnancy.

Van: hb hates Kunning.. so i replaced it with MErmaid fish. Bought dried Mermaid fish from Limbang market. Fried the mermaid fish and add chilli then finishes it with suger. Hb loves it.

with the nasi Lemak, i made his favourite Prawn paste chicken Mid-joint and one plate of Nai Bai vege.

kekeke nice nice lunch..

where is van.. wanna do lunch??

hello! was busy this morning no time to read..
ok i start from the latest posting..

Annlee, so which essential oil not suitable for pg waman? i heard some oil like basil or something can't be used right? i used to put the 'air ventalizser' with essential oil one in my room. Ii use lavendar but sometime i will use the ecryptus when my boy got block nose. But after PG, i just stop completely .. just incase lor..

Thanks Starz for the recepi! will find one day to try.

I tried baking cookies last weekend. But i still can taste the 'flour' taste in the cookies. Not like those selling outside. Not sure if they have put other thing?
Chemistry teacher : what is 'Shortening' ? another unhealhty food ? :p i saw some recepi mentioned it will make the cookies/biscuit more cripsy.
Ok, no more cookies for me liao...

sophie/annlee, i also like 95FM, but sometime still find it too noisy then i switch to 90.5 :p

somehow i like those 60's song leh..
my hb very funny whenever he heard the 80's song in 95FM, he will sigh and say, see we so old liao these were our generation song and now in the 'classic' channel...

So Taka baby fair worth going ?
Cos now we know other places like Beauty World, or some neighbourhood store are selling cheaper, no point going shopping center to get. Must save more $$ mah.. :D
Sophie u r right, sometime those book knowledge are very westernise, listen to the actual experience from the local here still better..

About the baby clothes, for 0-6 dun buy too many, they out grow very fast, u can get more 6 month above. Another tips from my fren, buy those front open type and with string one is better compare those button one.

Annlee, thanks for the info. Think I'll drop by this weekend to buy some products for bb..

Sophie, yes, Sun Moon is located on the 2nd floor of Chjimes. It is better to make reservations...I went to Baby Hypermart and Baby Kingdom over the weekend. The baby cot is about the same price as Robinsons so if Robinsons got sale then it would be cheaper. There are some car seats are quite priced quite reasonably. There is one selling at $139 that can be used from infant to 5 yrs old. But I din get cos my sis is giving away hers...

Sophie,

Here's the oatmeal raisin cookies recipe that requires the addition of wheat germ:

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

3 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 cup toasted wheat germ
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup packed light-brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 and 1/2 cup raisins

Preheat oven to 350 Fahrenheit. Stir together oats, flour, wheat germ, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt in a large bowl, set aside.

Put butter and sugars n the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix on medium speed until pale and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Mix in eggs and vanilla. Reduce speed to low. Add oat mixture, mix until just combined. Mix in raisins

Using a 1 and half inch ice cream scoop, drop dough onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper, spacing 2 inches apart. Flatten slightly.

Bake until golden and just set, about 14 minutes. Let cool on sheets on wire racks 5 minutes. Transfer cookies to racks using a spatula; let cool completely. Cookies can be stored in airtight containers at room temperature up to 3 days

Little Cat, Sophie and Annlee,

My home(or rather my room) cannot receive 93.3 and 95.0 very well..

My brother is the worst...33 and still listens to 98.7!!

Carole,
Just back from Linbang.Bought a mini desktop fan for my study desk from Linbang S$37 compared to S$39.90 at Lot1 Houshold fair which has just ended.

What is mermaid fish? the very thin and flat ones sometimes found in Malay Rice stall?

annlee,
Sometimes do feel a bit "Chuan"after doing yoga and pilates, but my biggest problem is stiff back. A lot of pose I couldn't do because of my inflexible back. When I attend pilates classes, the instructor will normally need to push me up.

She also have a set of pose where we do in pairs and help each other, making use of each other's strength,I find it very useful, but I don't have any "partner"to do that with me at home.

hey hey.. I also listen to Class 95 and like those early 90s songs....SSSHHHHH...so you all know which "era" I am from liaoz..

Should I get a slow cooker to make herbal soups, like this Zisa slow cooker? The slow cooker itself is not expensive but the electricity cost kills.
487422.jpg

Or should I just get the normal chinese porcelain pot to double boil?Which one will bring better results? I have been hearing cooking soups directly over the stove will result in loss of nutrients

Amelia,
Before I got the Tiger Thermal pot, I would DEFINITELY encourage you to get a slow cooker, it's really useful, don't need to "watch fire".

But now that I have a thermal pot, my view may be different.

I am going to "Double Boil" herbal soup using a small claypot in my thermal pot tonite. Will let you know the result...whether the soup taste as "rich" as using normal double-boil method.

BTW, you can also place a porcelain pot in a normal slow cooker,or in a normal pot over stove to double-boil.
487445.gif

Van,

Thanks for your input!
happy.gif

I worry that Thermal Pots won't make the soup "ru wei" as compared to double-boiling and slow cooking. As we know herbal soups need to "ru wei" for it to be effective.

If I get the porcelain pot, I will double-boil over the stove.

Where did you get the double boiling claypot?Sounds cute!

littlecat, because of you i must dig out my aromatherapy book, now so chuan.....

Most essential oil cannot be use so let you know what can be use. Eucalyptus, pine, cajuput all good for colds, flu, sinusitis. Camomile, geranium, lavender, lemon, neroli, orange, sandalwood and tangerine all can be use during pregnancy. But i still prefer you to check with the qualify person if you wanna use it on your body.

I love the smell of geranium and neroli during and after pregnancy. It helps to balance my hormone cos during that time im quite moody and the aroma help unlifting my mood.

I don't use other essential oil at that time cos they mention peppermint is good for reducing nausea but don't work for me and makes me puke more... so it all depends of the aroma your body or mind needs.

Amelia,
I usually double-boil using use porcelain Dun Zhong, but mine is quite small. So this time round I thought of using the slightly bigger claypot I have, to double-boil in thermal pot. It's not any special double boiling claypot, just the small brown one I used to cook dd's porridge.

will let you know whether the soup is RU WEI or not...
487475.gif

annlee,
Thanks for info. I'll probably just go get a normal oily scalp shampoo rather than risk the essential oils.

Krisjoy,
Good that you'll be getting a car-seat from your sis, can save money! So now you just have to get a cot. I'm hoping to get some hand-me-downs too, so can save some money for other more practical stuff.

Thanks for the oatmeal cookie recipe... looks good. Raisins got fibre too
happy.gif
Will attempt to make it when I got energy!

LittleCat,
I think shortening (usually known as vegetable shortening), is vege oil that's being solidified, so basically it's gone through the hydrogenation process. Dunno why some recipes call for shortening instead of butter, maybe cos it's flavourless compared to using butter which gives off a more "buttery" taste? Think I've seen shortening under the Crisco brand in some supermarkets that stock a lot of American stuff.

Van,
I also like the partner yoga/pilates kind of workout cos I find that it helps me go further in my stretches. Heh, but a friend really hates it cos she says she doesn't like to touch strangers' sweaty palms and basically doesn't like any body contact with strangers
happy.gif

Show us a picture of your double-boiled herbal soup later!

Amelia,
Your bro happening hor? 33 already and still listening to 98.7? I'm also 33, but find 98.7 too noisy leh... like a lot of "angry" music such as Linkin Park
wink.gif
but once in awhile, my hubby likes it, cos it's his "sports" music.

Amelia, I got the Zisa double boil cooker. I used that for my confinement herbal soup and my baby porriage. I stopped using now and switch to thermopot which van and littlecat taught me how to double boil it. I also think using Zisa wasting electricity and change to thermopot.

sophie, same here.... my hb likes linkin park and those techno music. He likes to listen when execise or dance till perspire. To me the music very 'fan'....

Van,

Ok please let me know how the soup turns out.
happy.gif
Can you snap some pictures of your daily home cooked dinners?I am curious and eager to have your culinary skills.

Sophie,

98.7 has no quality control...regardless good or bad, they will play any recent american or european contemporary music...some of the groups are a disgrace to music.

Amelia,
I agree with you on 98.7 - I think some of the DJs are not so good too, sometimes rattle a lot of nonsense!

annlee,
Yeah, these "angry" music really get their adrenalin pumping for exercise
uhoh.gif
but now we try and cut it out, cos scared come out angry baby!
wink.gif

Thanks for the list of essential oils dos and don'ts during pregnancy. I'm checking out lavera website for their shampoos - there's one with organic nettle and lemonbalm for oily hair; may get that one. Very sad now that my hair more oily and flatter-looking... hope I won't look like I got a pancake slapped on top of my head!

Amelia, don't think my thermopot is a good one, the heat will only last 4-6 hours. I got to reheat the soup every 2 hrs when doing double boil.
I think Tiger brand are good, van is using it, she's also the Tiger expert beside culinary skill.

sophie, thought you should have more body on your hair cos during preggie should have healthy and more body looking hair.

Van,
tell more about the thermal pot leh...i was thinking of getting the slow cooker too liaoz...
from wat i understand so far, for the thermal pot, there is a pot "inside" that u place ur ingredients, n cook over the stove first... after a certain period of time, remove that pot from the stove n put into the "external thermal pot", and it continues to cook??? is that right???
other than soups.. can cook stews this way too?? wat else can we cook with this....????

kao_smile.gif

hehehe... i havent reach my big "3"-"0" yet.. but i'm also listening to class95 or gold90.5 leh... jia lat right..??? my "taste" so classic hor...
i cannot stand 98.7 or even 98fm.. dont understand wat the "new" songs are about..... i still prefer those oldies where the lyrics tell a "story"....
kao_sticktongue.gif

about aromatherapy n stuff... maybe i'm reli the "older" generation here lah.. backwards thinking n all... (but due to influence from my MUM)... i've avoided all those room sprays, air-fresheners, essential oil burners.. etc... thru'out my pregnancy so far.. some "old wives tales" say baby will have higher risk of jaundice / asthma / watever... if we r exposed to these...
i'm the "rather listen n be safe, than sorry" type lor....

487533.jpg

annlee, hehe thanks for the aromatheraphy info ! wow so fast chuan liao? eh good excerise leh ;)
let me know what other info u hide under the bed i will ask more so u can do more excercise kekeke!

amelia, i also find 98.7 very very noisy! can't tahan!
your bro young at heart..
happy.gif

amelia, i also recommend Tiger Thermal Pot. I find the quality is there. beside double boil u can cook other thing. 1 stone kill many birds!
I just double boil tong-zhong-cao yesterday for 3 of us. ru-wei or not huh? hmm...cos i put quite a bit of water for 3 of us to share. But definately safe gas and also time to check if the water level gone down etc...
What i really luv is no need to watch fire. like yesterday came home after lunch, already no more energy, ask my hb to bath my son. then I go prepare the double boil thing, set the alarm abt 45min, tell my ang to put in the outer pot after 45 min. then i go bath and sleep liao... and my hb go for his foot massage after he put the pot back. then at nite the soup is waiting for us.
if normal double boil, either me or my hb got to watch the fire...
aiyoh keep talking how good is this no commission from Tiger company leh hor?
yesterday nite very bad, i think i only sleep abt 4 hours. i sleep around 11pm, wake up at 12, then 1am, then 3am then that's it, can't sleep, keep going to toilet for about half an hour. finally i think i sleep again around 5am.. morning very sleepy...zzz

hey gals, you all mixedup liaoz...LittleCat is the Tiger expert. She's the one who convinced me to get my Tiger lah !
487593.gif

starz,
You are right! That's how the thermal pot works.

Hi everyone. Yeah, the Tiger co. should give LittleCat commission - I too am very tempted to get one! So LittleCat, are you still crazy over Italian food? Found this on Dr Sear's website, thought of sharing with you &amp; the kakis here:

Spaghetti, from spago, "cord"
Linguini, "little tongues"
Vermicelli, "little worms"
Conchiglie, "shells"
Rigatoni, "furrows," short, wide fluted tubes
Lasagna, broad, sometime ruffled, ribbons of pasta (from Latin for "pot")
Fettucine," "small ribbons"
Ravioli, "little turnips"
Rotini, "spirals" or "twists"
Capellini (angel hair), "fine hairs"
Fusilli, "little spindles" (spirals)
Penne, "quills"
Tortellini, "little cakes"
Cannelloni, tube-or cane-shaped pasta

I think shortening gives cookies a crispier texture, whereas butter makes it more crumbly. Oh yes, before I forget again, muffin is denser, heavier and coarser in texture. Whereas cupcakes are light, moist and more delicate in texture.

I don't tune in to radio cos' my dd finds it too noisy. She used to like listening to Hi-5 but has outgrown it already. These days, she'll listen to musicals with me but she hates Phantom, says it gives her a headache, haha!

Gotta go - kitchen back in biz again
happy.gif

Something to share:

5. Cantaloupe, 1 cup 68 mg

annlee,
I got more hair leh, but the extra hair seems to be on the tummy! Hair on the head still looks the same, but more oily than last time.
uhoh.gif

Amelia,
I'm not a soup expert, but I like the Tiger pot too, very convenient and saves electricity like the gals say. During promos, they have pretty good deals with free gifts so you can look out for them.

Annelise's posting reminds me it's fruit time...

oic... so littlecat is the "Tiger" expert.. hehehe...

littlecat,
wat else can we do with the thermal pot???
i know got a few sizes.. that's always my BIGGEST headache.. cos either i cook for 2, 5.. or 12-15 people... how to decide wat size to buy like that...
kao_sticktongue.gif

maybe u yesterday nap too much liaoz, dats y cant sleep properly at night lor... tonite u sure knock out early n all the way to tomorrow morning... have n early nite tonite!!!
kao_smile.gif

487738.jpg

Hi mummies,

Is using the slow cooker electricity-consuming? I have one at home but did not use it much..Or should I get a Tiger pot?

starz, remember cat, tiger same family
happy.gif

mainly to cook soups, dessert, or braise meats etc very good. U can also steam egg, double boil. Also u can use it as cooler eg. put ice and your fav wine/juice. also good to keep your food warm etc...

There is a recepi book in the box to explain diff way of cooking. i bought the 4.5L one, for me just nice. I rem Van bought the bigger one. If u have big family then better buy bigger.
For us this size just nice cos if u cook lesser thing eg below half pot the effect is not there. Cos u need the heat to continue the 'cooking' so called after u put in the outer pot.

SO far those who bought the pot find the soup cooked taste good.

Of cos u can't compare with ur mom's cooking on the stove or charcoal type hor...;)
But it is really save gas and convinient.
I like to boil the soup b4 i go out, cos when i come back i can drink soup liao. but last time without this pot i have to watch the fire.. can't go for a nap or bring my son down walk walk.

I found one recepi book in library got all the nice soup recepi using this pot.

Btw van have u found the book yet?

Also another tips i learnt from the book is, after the soup in the outer pot for about 3 hours, before u want to serve, boil again for another 20 min, the soup will taste 'thicker' according to the Hong Kong chef.

LittleCat,
Ha ha , I was about to remind the gals that Tiger belongs to the Cat Family.
487769.gif

Ya.I bought 5.2L Tiger, and always feel that it's too big for me until today,I try putting my double-boiling Dun Zhong and little claypot in to double-boil...just nice!

Sophie bought 5.2LTiger and Choc bought 6L La Gourmet.

I still couldn't find the cookbook in library leh?! Do you have the title? May be I could search and reserve for it.

Krisjoy,
I am thinking of storing my slow cooker away into the storeroom....guess you know what is my answer?
487770.gif

sophie, i saw lavere product at Raffles city basement. The lady says the oily scalp shampoo can be use for pregnancy woman, as long it does not contain cedarwood, dill and sage.Hths!!

So littlecat is the real Tiger expert here!!!

starz, Krisjoy,
Yep, I can attest to the convenience and goodness of the soup made by Tiger pot! 5.2L is a bit big for just me and hubby, but he prefers the lid hinge for the 5.2L one... says it's more robust... men!

When I bought it, the free gift was a 1.8L Endo Thermo Pot (Endo is a subsidiary brand of Tiger, but prob made in China). The small Endo one is not so effective for cooking, but I use it as a thermal flask just to keep things warm.

annlee,
You just went Raffles City? Heard it's changed a lot! Me still a bit suaku, haven't gone so far yet. Thanks for helping me check out the shampoo
happy.gif
I'll prob drop by this Thu evening to buy it.

FYI, the ingredient that is not good is this one called methyisothiazolinone (or MIT) which is found in Head &amp; Shoulders and some other shampoo. http://www.drgreene.com/21_1862.html
This website a bit "kuah zhang" cos I think many preggie women would have used shampoos with this ingredient, but no problem with it. But just play safe, I am now cutting out this ingredient from my hair products.

Amelia,Sophie
This is how my double-boil soup look after <font color="0000ff">45min of stove top boiling</font> and <font color="aa00aa">3 hours of thermal pot "cooking"</font>.

Amelia, the soup is very "ru wei",hb can't tell that this soup is double-boiled using thermal pot.You can also see the soup is turned to dark colour.

488018.jpg

Van,
Wow, your soup looks very good and very "bu"! I like this kind of dark-colored soup *drool* If your hb cannot tell the difference, then it must be really good, afterall, he's the one who can tell the difference between normal salt and Pan Salt!

Which herbal soup is this and what is the effect of this soup?

Sophie,
This soup has Song1 Rong2 and Ling2 Zhi1.It's supposed to<font color="0000ff"> improve immune system, enhance "chi",stabilze nervous system and improve digestive system</font>..... or so they claimed...
488032.gif

Van,
- What is Song Rong?
- Is Ling Zhi expensive? You bought the dried kind? I've never seen it before, only the powder kind we find in Eu Yan Sang.
- Did you add any meat to it?

Sorry, ask so many questions... wanna "build" my recipe database for future cooking
happy.gif

Van,

Very nice soup!Yes dark colour means it's very "ru wei".What else is in your soup?I see some wolfberries floating about.
happy.gif
Also, how do you decide on the combination of herbs for each soup?Through the TCM physician's help or?

Stabilise nervous system refers to reducing stress and anxiety? Thanks hor guru;)

Sophie,
This soup is a pre-packed soup herbs bought from Fu Hua.I chose this becos the "benefits" sounds good! I used about $3 lean pork for 2 person's serving.

I tried to type out the recipe in Chinese but couldn't find some of the Chinese words in MS Office Word.

Song1 Rong2=
488049.jpg

Amelia,
I think stabilise nervous system means Yang3 Shen2 or An1 Shen2 in Chinese, you are right to say it means reduce stress and anxiety....something my hb needs from the big changes in his Company!

Sometimes I use pre-packed herbs from Chinese Medical Hall.If I follow recipes from any books/online recipes, I will look up the "effect" of individual ingredient.

hmmmm.......so I can keep my slow cooker in the storeroom liaoz...

Van,
Thanks! Will remember this soup and check it out at Fu Hua next time.

Looks extremely delicious... can't wait till I can drink all these herbal soups again!

Carole,annlee,

I thought of getting the GAIA <font color="0000ff">Skin Soothing Lotion and Conditioning Detangler</font>, have you gals tried these two? What other products have you tried on your ds/dd?

Hi Van, wow, your soup looks rich and nutricious. I am a big fan of cantonese soups
happy.gif
Btw, how does the Tiger pot look like? Suah-ku leh, have not seen it before...

Hello gals...
Wah.. this thread is very fast... I cannot catch up.. pant pant...

Van,
I also store my slowcooker. keke.. bought a year ago and still brand new...
Wah.. you have very good knowledge of chinese herbs.. next time I need advice, can ask you?
I used pressure cooker to boil soup nowadays.

Sophie,
SLS is also no good rite? I read it's cancer causing... I changed my hair and body shampoo to those without SLS. And just installed a showerhead that can remove chlorine from the water
happy.gif
I make sure my baby bath is chlorine free water
happy.gif

Sophie,

Thanks for the lead. How much does one cost? See already very 'xin-yang-yang'...feel like getting one for my new house
happy.gif

lyn,
Yeah, was thinking of buying shampoo without SLS &amp; MIT. Which brand you using now?

Didn't know got such showerheads that can remove chlorine?

Krisjoy,
I paid $199 at Taka for the 5.2L pot - came with a free gift which at that time was a 1.8L Endo pot. Not sure how much Van &amp; the rest paid.
