Hi all,
I created this thread as I am BF my baby yet encounter alot of problem throughout such as sore nipple, nipple bled , engorge and etc... . Hope all mummy can share their exp and learn something. So that our baby can have the best feed and lighten mummy prob .
My baby is picky , he choose to drink on left side of the breast only. Therefore I nw choose to pump out and feed from bottle . At the same time can see the amt tat he drink. Anyone know hw can I make me to drink on both side?

Im also a new mum n feeding my BB solely on BM.

We seems to b so similar,my breast is bigger on d left side thus producing more milk then right side ( like 80% more!) . I try to latch on my BB more on my right breast hopefully they'd balance out.

I need to express every 3hrs while at work & store in fridge. my bb is being looked after by my MIL when im at work.

Do u nurse ur bb directly or from bottle when u r out and about? how do u go about expressing while outside? Must find nursing room or just drape cloth over yourself n nurse/express? Can i just use toilet cubical while expressing?

Any mommies looking for MEDELA PURELAN nipple cream or AVENT Nipple protectors?
I have a tube of PURELAN (37g) expiry 04/2013 to let go @$10.
Avent nipple protectors are brand new in packaging @$12.
Self collection Eunos mrt or via postage at additional $1.
Please PM if keen. Thanks!

On a separate note, i'm a second time mum. My breastfeeding attempt for the first child failed cos of pressure from MIL to feed baby formula & insufficient knowledge on breastfeeding.
For my 2nd child, i'm into the 2nd month of exclusive breastfeeding & so far so good.
I feel the key to successful breastfeeding is proper latching. If baby is not latched on correctly, it will result in pain & sore nipples. It's good to attend the Lactation experts free classes at the hospital that you deliver at as they provide good advice.

You can also refer to La Leche website for some tips on breastfeeding: http://www.laleche.org.uk/pages/about/breastfeedinginfo.htm

Or u can visit these sites:

Hope this information benefits some mommies out there trying to make breastfeeding work.

I also gt pressure from parent in law , kept on discourage me to breast feed , ask me to stop. Baby no appetite or nt well then all will blame on the breast milk quality nt gd and etc... Sometimes my milk contain blood also . The lactation doc say is due to the pressure of the pump . So far , I think massaging the breast is the most useful to minimize the pain. Nw things get better . Hopefully I can feed at least 6 mths . normally when we go out , I will look for nursing rm to express out or breast feed. Toilet cubical I dun recommend for hygiene purpose. Most of the timE feed directly if nt I give hiM formula.

Lin,

I fully agree with you!!... I'm also 2nd time mummy, and first time also didn't work out due to pressure from inlaws and no experience. Was determined to make BF successfully this round.

My son is now 15 months, and still on full BM!...

Managed to do it successfully due to expert advise from the lactation consultants at Mt A... thumbs up to Sister Kang!

Hi Mummies,
I'm a 1st time mtb & 20 weeks now. Plan to BF my baby girl, due in sept. Can you advise on what I need to buy, eg breast pump (manual vs electric), feeding bottles (how many?), sanitiser, warmer, storage container etc etc...
Thank you so much

Hi Melly, hope am still able to help altho my post is 2 mths since ur qns!

Do take Lin's advice to find out ALL u can on breastfeeding. I'm a first time mum and I wishfully thought this is natural. It's very wrong. U gonna arm yourself amply to handle breastfeeding, on top of recuperating and taking care of a new life.

many 'seasoned' nursing mum swear by manual expression. but for us, i think still electric ba. i first got a single electric, took me double the time and frustration. and then bot a double electric. wanna save $$ became double the bill. there are many brands out there. i use medela, so far so gd

hope u have bot the rest by now..otherwise better get soon!

all the best in your last trimester and enjoy this moment..really ..

Hi Melly

Here are some answers to your questions.

Breast pumps - If you are working and intend to return to the workforce, then get a dual electric pump. Otherwise a single electric or manual pump should do fine, if you intend to be a stay-at-home or work-from-home mum. I used Medela.

Bottles - most brands offer 'starter kits' which may include about 3 bottles. You can get one of those for a start. Do note that bottles and teats need to be changed every 3 months or when they start to yellow. I used Pigeon bottles and teats.

Sanitiser - It depends on the amount of kitchen counter space you have to include this machine. Afterall, you will need to use it for a year. I received mine as a gift. The brand is Fralin.

Warmer - there are some brands that have warmers and bottle sanitisers in the same machine, so you may want to look ut for those. I randomly bought one from Tollyjoy.

Storage containers - Personally, I bought Streamline (milktrays) from Mumsfairy (online store). They look like ice-cube trays but actually meant for milk. The downside is that they are not meant for storing milk, but rather freezing the milk (like ice) before you transfer into ziplocks or milk storage bags. But I like it because every frozen milkstick is exactly 30ml or 1 ounce. Makes my life easier and more environmentally friendly.

Nursing bras - do get some of these during the 3rd trimester. Do note that most nursing bras look frumpy. Otherwise, some online shops do sell more modern nursing bras. However, do not purchase those with underwire as it can affect the production of the milk supply.

Nipple cream - for the 1st 2 weeks of breastfeeding when you would get sore nipples. This is because 1. Both baby and you are picking up the correct method to latch. 2. Your milk supply is determined during these 2 weeks, so you will like to have to pump after latching. So you will definitely go through some discomfort like engorgement and sore nipple.

Hot/Cold Compressions - good for verry bad engorgement (breasts have too much milk). Just apply and massage before latching/pumping. You can use hanky soaked in hot/ice water as compressions too.

The key to nursing is fluid and rest. Drink at least 30mins before latch/pump. Have ample rest. Stressful mums will not be able to get good supply.

My baby just popped...I tried latching him, he suckled but no milk came out...nurse said e milk takes abt 3-4 days then got milk...is it normal? Panicking...

Michelle, the nurse is right. You'll only get the colostrum in the initial days. Little in quantity but so much goodness in quality.

But do rem to massage to stimulate from now. My experience was once the milk came, the breasts became engorged. Still has to keep latching the baby as he is the best stimulator. If u are up to it, pump after he suckles, in case he is still to small and weak to be effective or he is too sleepy and keeps falling asleep at your breast.

I had a tough time and might not have done it properly, affecting my supply ultimately. All the best to you! I hope it goes well for you! Keep it up but dun be too anxious!

Hi googlez, thanks! I tried latching on since then & today baby manage to suckle & absorb e colostrum...but he keeps falling asleep after a while...hopefully after discharge, can keep e momentum going...

sometimes my latch on is not correct leh, his mouth not covering e whole nipple...quite depressing...hopefully e baby manages to get enough colostrum...

Hi Michelle, great to hear that! :D

Just to share with you some of the help I got when I ran into difficulty during the first 2/3 weeks..

1. Lactation consultants! Seek their help! Sister Kang from Mt A is renowned for correcting latching. This is soooooooooo impt! I only knew the difference when my bb was abt 2-3 mth old? Then I realised what's correct latching!

2. Breast massage. My fren recommended one to me when I had engorgement. She also suffered frequent mastitis (too much supply). Otherwise, you will have to be religious about this. DIY or get your HB to help u! Really really...get rid of the lumps and engorgement by massaging and kneading! But careful not to bruise your breasts!

Hope this helps

Now that my milk supply is in, my breasts tend to leak milk by itself...is it normal...?

As baby prefers to drink milk on my right breast, my right breasts now is cracked & sore...heard breast milk can soothe & heal it, but how long will it take to heal..?

My breast will letdown milk when i hear my baby cry. Got to wear disposal breast pad while outside. If your nipple is sore n painfull, Remember to air them dry after feed. Using gel will just make healing slow.
