AUTISM, ADHD, ADD, etc - SUPPORT GROUP!

Parents, let's understand more on autistic children, how they move, how they feel, and what they need. I find Amythest Schaber's "Ask an Autisitc" on YouTube channel is very helpful.

hi mummies, my boy turning 3 yrs old in coming Aug, but he still dun talk yet only babbles. he got a very bad temper which can try to knock his head on the ground. we try to bring him to kkh for assessment but the doc says he might be slow so not fair to assess him yet. but till now i feel signs of autism is showing specially the temper anger part. any mommies can share on the pte speech N Ot therapy? waiting list for the school for my sons is still long . so trying to find other ways to help him. thanks alot

Hi Tootyling,

From what you have mentioned, he might be showing temper as he is not able to communicate his needs. Since you have already noticed the redflags, it is best you go for early intervention and not wait for the diagnosis. The speech and OT will help with regards to identifying where he needs help with. You can seek private intervention first while waiting for school.

I recommend HeadStart For Life, a private pediatric intervention centre offering Speech therapy, Occupational therapy, Social Skills training, Therapeutic play. They also have a school readiness programme which encompasses all the therapy and academic intervention as well.

Do check out their website for more information: www.headstartforlife.com.sg
Hope it helps!

my Son is recently diagnosed with ASD. He's 4yo. We are waiting for epic and with the Long wait list, was thinking of enrolling in PPip Centres first.. Was wondering if anyone tried Kids cove( Paya Lebar) or dynamics ( forum).. Any reivew or comments will really help! Thanks in advance

Hi mommies,

We should have a support whatsapp group on ASD. Information can be shared more timely. What do you think? Anybody interested I can be group admin.

I want to ask any good books to share on training dealing with high-function autism children?

Thanks.
Hi I'll be keen to join the WhatsApp group. I'll pm u my number :)

Hi, my son is currently going to a special school and is 4yrs old. Behaviour wise improvement there, but speech is still delayed. Can anyone recommend a good special school or speech therapy center.
Thanks, worried mom.

Hi Yogamama,
I have just enrolled my son for EIP with Kids cove, starting in mid-sept. So Can't review much. (any mummies if have reviews may PM me too). As the EPIC centres waiting time is too long and as my son is now 4+ yrs old. I believe the chances is very slim for him to enter EPIC centre. You may visit PPIP centres you are interested for enquires or have a look to decide.

Hi sunday88

I've signed up my daughter with asd for home-based ABA before when she was 2 years 3 months old. It didn't help in her speech then. However, ABA helped her in her compliance and joint attention. This is important as she was cooperative and could follow instructions when she subsequently attended speech therapy 6 months later.

Hi, just wantedbto share that after i hv just attended the free son-rise parent sharing last sat. I applied the strategy more wholeheartedly, may not be professional enuf at home just for 1.5 days. I can feel immediate more bonding with my son. He is more open to me now. He told me his secret like used his toothbrush to brush the drain at sch everyday. It is amazing.i am looking forward to attend the preview talk on 16th oct by founder's son, raun kaufmen.

Just wish to add that although i received a comment fr one mother that her friend has attended the 5-day start-up course but only saw minimal improvement in her son. But her friend doesn't want to share more info. But personally, I still believe in son-rise. I will continue to apply son-rise strategy to my son..another challenging day..my son decided to leave his water bottle in sch today...sob..sob..i must work harder and believe son-rise......i hv kept a diary on my son's progress..after i applied son-rise..jiayou.

Anyone tried animal assisted therapy? Saw a short video on this therapy and it can help with socio-emotional development. Appreciate feedback from parents whom have tried this therapy.

Hope to be able to provide more in depth explanation about the different therapy services available for children with Autism.

When our children is first being diagnosed or suspected of Autism by a government hospital, OT and ST are usually recommended. The hospitals also usually recommend half day EPIC and half day mainstream. When i get to interact with the parents, many are not sure why are such recommendations given and simply follow according to what the professionals have recommended them to. Let me try to explain it to give you guys a better understanding.

Occupational Therapy (OT)
Usually for children with sensory and motor planning issues.

Speech Therapy (ST)
For children with speech and articulation issues. Do note that speech and language are not the same. Speech is the ability to produce a sound but language is more of knowing the vocab, sentence structure, verbs etc. A Chinese usually have good speech and language for Mandarin but good speech but poor language for Tamil.

Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA)
A form of behavioral therapy that i strongly believe in. It is the most researched on methodology and proven to give the best result for children with Autism. However in Singapore, it is not one of the recommended form of therapy by government hospitals as there are no formal certifications for ABA (other than BCBA which is something more recent). It deals mainly with behavioral issues like compliance, eye contact, imitation, attention, obsessions etc. Though i have been practicing ABA for more than 10 years, i have to admit that ABA is not everything. It really voice down to the needs of your child.

What i see very often is that we know that clearly, there are some issues with speech but for most of the time, i still recommend ABA initially. The reason is that though ST tackles the speech issues, the child is unable to learn or benefit anything out of the therapy session if the child lacks attention, compliance, imitation skills etc. It is like putting a child into a school with the best lesson plan but the child is reluctant to sit and listen to the teacher. As the strength of a speech therapist is to help with the speech, they may not have the expertise to handle the behaviours. With better self control, attention, ability to sit and listen, the child will benefit much more from the session.

Hope that i was able to provide a better understanding for you guys the different form of therapy so that you guys can choose the most appropriate form of intervention for your child. =)

Hi, if your child is interested in arts, maybe you would like to engage me as his private art teacher? Previously I used to work in special needs school (MINDS). Arts able to let Austrian kids do anything they want and let them express out themselves using colours. Besides that, I'll also be teaching clay moulding. Clay moulding is to build up their motor skills and let them differentiate different types of shapes.

Just like to share with everyone with children who has speech impediments. Its hard to get an affordable speech therapist but I got an occupational therapist who does some speech rehab for stammering and autistic children. He is really good with my child and I have seen great improvement. My child used to be so shy about her impediments. At least she is more willing to express herself . Usually he uses pictures and words to create conversations and encourage the child to speak. He then gently corrects any speech flaws. Works in a govt facility for adults with speech and functional disability. Keep the flag flying for your kids mummies. Spread the love and support

Hello everyone,

I'm a daddy to a 9-year-old boy who has ADHD. I checked this thread, and there doesn't seem to be any WhatsApp group for parents like ourselves. I have searched but not found any active forum nor community that caters for our needs either. As parents of children with ADHD/ASD, we are all super busy managing our homes, finances, work and kids who require more attention that usual. As such, most of us rarely have spare time to hang around on forums chatting etc.

In light of that, I was hoping you ladies/guys could check out my blog (http://adhd.sg) from time to time and maybe post a few comments on the posts. I will be making an effort to post about news/info that is related to ADHD/ASD. The blog is completely ad-free and sells nothing. This is my attempt to create a community for parents like myself. Feel free to share your views and experiences there too.

I truly hope we can build a community of our own catered to our specific interests and needs. Maybe even organise stuff like "Bulk Orders" of resources from overseas if there are enough people in the future. Please join me and create one. We need to start somewhere.

Hi, I researched and wrote a post about Sugar and its ill effects on our children. You can find the full post including study findings etc in a post on the blog mentioned above. I do not want to keep spamming the blog URL.

I would advise anyone who suspects their kid has ADHD (even if just showing some symptoms) to cut down on his/her sugar consumption. This was an old belief that sugar makes for more hyperactive children. But studies show that there is truth behind that old belief. Even normal children can react to having too much sugar. So our children might react even more to the excess sugar in their bodies.

The Yale School of Public Health discovered that children who consume heavily sweetened energy drinks are 66% more likely to be at risk for hyperactivity and inattention symptoms.

It is really easy to consume excessive sugar in this age. A fruit drink, a can drink, a few sweets or a candy bar. That's pretty much it! I have personally seen the benefits of reducing my son's sugar intake. So I would highly recommend all parents do so.

Hi i would like to know more about this two Centres: THK EPIC centre at Tampines and Kids cove centre. I will appreciate if can PM me the feedback or comment. Thanks in advance.

Hi mummies, i am also new to this thread. Logging in to SMH after a long time cos seeking some help & advice. Like some of the mums here, my child will be starting the EIPIC programme recommended by KKH soon. However we parents are required to attend a workshop (scheduled next month) first. After that, I think there is another waiting period of 6 months before the child starts the actual programme.

Btw, my child is 3yo. His issue is delayed speech development and short attention span (eg. not responding when his name is called and gives up on a activity easily). He is able to speak a few words (mostly only 1 word - either 1 or 2 syllabus, not in a sentence, for eg. he can only say "milk" and not "i want milk"), plus his pronunciation is unclear. Only family members and his caregivers might be able to understand him (sometimes got to guess what is he trying to say).

Whilst waiting, I am considering to visit a private speech specialist. Attached is a list of speeach & language therapists i obtained from KKH. Has any mummy brought her child to any of these therapists? Any comments or advice is appreciated. Cost is an impt factor. Thanks in advance.

Hi all,
I am new here and I am not sure if this is where I can post my question.
But I would like to know if any parent here has claimed handicapped child relief for your child with ASD? Will their future be impacted in any way? Especially if the child is mildly autistic.

Hi Seoulover
I m looking for home base OT therapist, can share the contact with me?

Anyone can recommend good Homebase therapist to me?

My ger went to Olive Tree development Center for OT and ST. Would not recommended as the boss is very pushy to keep forcing me to sign up package and confirm the dates upfront.
Instead to show concern of the progress of my Daughter, he is more concern how to ask me come more often to the class or discuss package. Bad experience.

Thanks for the review! We can all benefit from honest reviews!

hi, I'm new here, my boy turning 4 this year and KKH diagnosed him ASD as well. now I need to choose the EIPIC centre, it's kind of challenging to us, some of the school like Eden, the waiting time is more than one year and not many centre to choose from because we stay in east side. We are considering Rainbow centre in Margeret drive or Kids cove in paya lebar. Any parents can share with us their experience ?

My boy has delayed in speech, I think I read some mummies also share the same, just able to say milk but not I want milk ... We also consider private therapist but the affordability is another considerations ...

Is there any support chat group we can join as may not be able to read the forum everyday ... :(

Hi, I am new here. My younger boy is turning 7 this year and diagnosed with ASD and speech delay. He is now attending EIPIC and waiting to apply for special school. My elder boy also is mild ASD but he's in normal stream school.

I hope I can gain more advice and support together with the mummies here.

Thank you.

Hi! I am new here. Hope to get some support and help from mummies who are going thru or have gone thru similar experiences. :)

My younger boy is turning 6 years old this year. He was diagnosed with autism at 2 years old. He is very good in Math but has no functional communication. He has limited and selective speech. He is able to repeat what we say if he wants to. But he will not say spontaneously unless the things he is asking for is highly motivating. 2 1/2 years ago he joined ARC but now i am looking for other alternatives as he has not shown much improvement for the past year. Anybody has experience with Dynamics? Pls share.

I am also looking for ST. Looking at Ovspring developmental clinic and a home therapist name Sum Hui Ting. If anyone has experiences with them pls share.

Looking forward to replies.

Thank you very much.

Hi,

Any mummies wondered about the cause of autism in your child? I'm so worried that my son will have autism too.

Thanks

My son has just finished his Mid-Year exams in CHS Primary 3. I will let you know how he did eventually. He has ADHD symptoms but I have been controlling his diet and supplementing him.
