Any Mummies in Sydney

Hi, Peachy

One of my colleague just had a baby in RNSH and said he is satisfied with the experience, no complains. He told me they charge about $900 per day for bed only and Dr visit is about $100 each time for his case, everything else is additional depending on circumstances. So imagine if u have no insurance, the bill could easily pile up. I think you can call the hospital to enquire too.

I guess the media just blew it out of proportion for that case as I believe cases like this do happen in other hospitals everywhere. If you end up being a complicated case in private hospital, they sent you to public hospital too as they are the ones with the facilities. But if cost is not a concern, then go private I guess.

My experience with NSP was very good, very satisfied with the quality of care I got, all the nurses and Drs are very qualified, I don't see any trainees. So don't have to worry about them using you as guinea pig. If private, OB will deliver but there is also one dedicated midwife attending to you most of the time.

You are right, you will have the baby soon after birth irregardless whether u can walk or not and privided baby is ok too. The nursery only open at 5 pm, so during the day u have to be the one taking care of baby and they don't bathe nor feed the baby for you, you have to do it yourself. So everything is very hands-on. However, there is always someone there if you need advice.

One thing bad about NSP is, they didn't allow spouse to stay overnight, but I know some hospital like Baulkam Hills Pte does allow. Not sure if that has changed.

Any mummies here who previously had a maid in S'pore and manage to bring them over to Aust? Can please advise what's the process?

hi manta

Oh..so they do have a nursery! so they help to take care of bub after 5pm?

ya..guinea pig is the term. i went to GP yest, and she told me the situation at public hospital as well..trainee doctors without experience will be handling me. thk i feel safer gg to private bt maybe can look into share care with a GP. cut cost.

i tot that so long you have a one bedder, hubby is allowed to stay overnite

Hi maybemummy

cant help u, dunno of anyone who brought maids along with them to oz. maybe can ask the maid agencies in spore?

Hi, maybemummy

Regarding bringing maids to AU, you need to apply work visa for them and because there is a minimum wage you need to pay them while they are here working for you, it may not be cost efficient for you to bring them over. First stop for you is to check the immigration website for information. Also try the maid agencies as what Peachy mentioned.

Hi Peachy

They do have nursery, but can only park baby there for a while, when baby cry they will ring you to bring baby back. They only help longer if baby is really unsettled and if the mother really needs rest.

Its their rule that hubby cannot stay over, but if mother have issues they usually allow 1 or 2 nights so hubby can help with baby. Hope they relaxes the rule now.

Shared cost with the GP, that's a good idea.

Hi Peachy & Manta, thanks for respoding to my query. Have already gone to the maid agency but they found out can't bring the maid out of the country long term with work visa they can only be away from S'pore for a month. I was hoping that some of you gals might have successfully bring your maid over using other methods.

Hi Manta

i see...if this delivery is like the first one, i basically cant get out of bed for the first day! oh dear... i had a very bad reaction to epidural.

maybemummy

actually i havent seen maids around here so i dont think its common. If really cannot bring your maid over, maybe can try alternatives? say if u need help with your kids, can ask your mom along? i think there are part time housekeepers around bt def wont be as cheap as having a maid, cause anything to do with labour here is expensive!!

Hi, I am a malaysian (married to a singaporean) in Sydney due to his job posting. We will be having our baby #2 in dec. Our first girl is almost 2 years old.

have booked with northshore private and our gynae is in St Leonards. Are there any good nannies to recommend or things to look out for as i'll be giving birth in sydney.

Hi, Yenn Tiew

For nannies look into the local papers, u will be able to get some there and do some interviews.
Are you looking for short term or long term ?
Can u get your relative to help for a while ? Then don't need to get a nanny.

As for things to look out for, don't think there are anything. U are in good hands at NSP and after that will be back home, are there any help at home to help u cope ? Will be better if u have someone else at home with u.

hihi not sure is teh forum still active. My hubby is seriously consider abt moving to Sydney. We are calculating all the expenses before deciding as it is a big decision.

Can anyone recommend any good private school for my boys? I have 2 boys, one is 5 and one is going 1 year old. What is the school fee per annum for private school? Hope someone can help me out.

sunnyling
This tread is not very active but also happen to be on holidays...

There are alot of private schools here, depends on where you want to stay. U need to pay at least 5 figure fees per year and you need to go to the schools to have a feel of it and compare the program of various schools.

Thanks Manta for replying.

You are in Sydney now? Which part of Sydney you are staying?

Yap from what is see is super ex for private school but is not cheap for public school either if you are not a PR.

sunnyling
Yes, I live in Northern sydney. U havn't got your PR ? If u are not PR then, makes sense to go private, otherwise, public school is free. When do you plan to come here ?

Manta,

I read that Northern sydney is a better area to stay but I will be in Sutherland Shire if going. We are planning early next year if all are confirm. Of cos they will prefer us to go earlier but I want to wait for my bonus as now is already September.

sunnyling,
I guess it all depends on where u are going to work and live. Sutherland is a pretty nice area too, I have a friend who used to lived there in Cronulla. We sometimes, drive down to Cronulla on weekends too. For me, I live north, cos of work too. But there are nice places everywhere, and with a car, no problem.

Manta,

Yap the working place is at Kurnell so Cronulla is the nearest. I think most important to me is there will be good school around for my 2 sons.

Hi all,

Can anyone advise what is the cost of a 20 footer shipment from singapore to sydney, we are now providing the information to them how much we need for our relocation cost.

Hi Mummies in Sydney,

I really hope you all can help...

I am planning a trip to Syndey next month and is working on the itinerary..

Like to get some suggestions from all mummies on where to go..

Also, I am planning to visit the weekend markets but is confused by the so many weekend markets in Sydney.

Would really appreciate if you all could share info with me via PM.

Thanks

hi

what are some of the suburbs that are family friendly? I heard some good reviews abt the hills district. any other suggestions? care to share about your choice? My hubby will be at Uni Syd at lidcombe but we may want to look further.

how much do you pay for maternity if you have private insurance?

thx

Hi, JoylnSep
For tourist, its pretty std places of interest here in Sydney. Depending on how many days u are here and how much u want to do, are u planning to drive here ? Just grab a brochure from tour operators to get an idea. But I usually take visitors to Manly via the ferry and they love the scenic ride and the beach there, they have weekend markets there as well. Blue Mountains is also on the list if u don't have many days. Regarding weekend markets, personally, I like the Bondi markets, the one in Oxford St and the one in Newtown etc.

Hi, sweetbaby
Alot of suburbs are family-friendly. Hills district is pretty young, so its nice, everything looks very new. If u drive its quite ok, otherwise, public transport can be problem. Try the northern suburbs or the North-shore area, I guess u have to come abit early to see the places before deciding where u want to live.
But due to sydney's bad traffic during the peak hrs, don't think u want to live too far away from uni.

As for maternity, it depends on the type of visa u have and u have to check with your private insurance.

hi to all Sydney mummies,

kindly asking for your advise with regards to our relocation plans -- Hubby is going to do attachment for 1 yr at RPAH/Uni of Syd this coming end Nov. Am due to give birth to our first child on 09/11/10. We are intending for hubby to go first and look up Camperdown area for a place to stay, then we (baby, me and MIL) will follow on 1st week Dec. Just need your feedback on the type of neighborhood we may be settling in:
Is Camperdown family-friendly?
Any Singaporean shops/makan places you can recommend? -- hubby is a foodie and my cooking skills are next to none (so am anticipating that maybe can get some familiar food to tide over on days that am super busy with baby)
For SAHM, do you buy things in bulk; where are the good places to do grocery?
Lastly, any good PDs to recommend? My baby will likely need well baby check-up as we are bringing her over about her 1st month or so.

Thanks so much for any help. Am feeling a bit excited but also a bit nervous over the new changes that are due to happen in a few weeks' time (new baby, new place to stay, hubby's new job attachment, new role as SAHM). Hopefully, things will go well.

Looking forward also to making new friends with Sydney mummies out there

Hi, kitkat

Congrats, will be a new mother in a few days !

Camperdown is ok, near uni and the city, so lots of students. Sydney have huge Asian population, lots of asian food around, so no worries with regards to food. There are a few makan places for local Spore/M'sian food in the city.

With regards to buying in bulk, what sort of items are you thinking ? Personally, for small family doesn't make sense, cos you need to think of storage too.

Grocery usually done at the supermarket like Coles/Woolworths/Franklins etc. For Asian groceries, you can go to Asian supermarket, your nearest maybe Paddys Market or Chinatown.

For PDs, your hubby may know better once he is over, if its just general check-up or common ailments, GPs are just as good, if your baby does not need specialised care, there is no need for PD.

Things will go well for you, Sydney is so cosmopolitan and have huge Asian population, everything is easily accessible, I'm sure you will have no problems adapting and will enjoy your time here.

Hi Manta,

Thanks for your reply

Gave birth already to our Bb girl Alyssa on 04/11/10. Now trying to cope with crash course on breastfeeding/ burping/ diaper changing.

Appreciate if you can enligthen me on how to arrange our accommodations in Sydney. We plan to rent an apartment and have looked at domain.com.au, but so far, the real estate agents we have emailed will just reply to us about the viewing date of the flats we are interested in. Is it cost effective for us to just stay in an apartelle/serviced apartment for 1-2 weeks first then just look out for the place to stay and meet the agents once we are there? Also, what Internet provider and phone company do you find give value for money package? We will likely retain our Singtel HP line (company plan so still cheap) for the 1 yr we will be there. But in the meantime, we will maybe get prepaid Local sim + data package, and set up internet at home. Also, for utilities (like PUB), do we arrange choice of provider or got only 1 kind for gas/light/water? Sorry for many questions by really appreciate your help.

Hi, kitkat
Congrats ! bb can't wait to come here

I think it would be better to personally look at the place before u commit yourself to a contract.

As for communication provider, since u will only be here for short term, just go for prepaid. U need to go to the shops or go online to get info there are so so many plans out there. Some of the major phone companies include Optus, Telstra, Vodafone etc.

For utilities, it depends on where u going to stay, some area have multiple providers, others don't. U can get the info from the agents.

Hi, my friend just go birth in Sydney. I tot of buying her gift via online so that it can b sent to her house.

Any advice on where to go for online baby stuff?

Thks

Hi Pkum

Not sure if its too late. You can go to mothercare.com.au or toysrus.com.au. etc. I don't really shop online, so not much help.
